Questions and answers about all things computer.

To start:

I want to export music files from iTunes to a USB drive to play it on my car stereo. I use a Mac OS. I can't drag and drop, can this be done without burning to a disc as an intermediate step?
I never called you fat.

Your files are all physically stored someplace on your box. iTunes is just a user interface.

Find them (search for *.mp4 or folders called "iTunes" for example), then copy the files to USB. Check that your car stereo supports MP4. No playlist support etc but that's Apple for you! :)

By default, this is how Apple organizes those files and where they should be:

Macintosh HD --> Users --> You (your name is the default folder name) --> Music --> iTunes --> iTunes Music

That iTunes Music folder will have all your albums organized by folders. You can drag & drop from there. :)

Good idea to have such a topic! I suggest that the General forum is a more suitable place for it, though.

Hey, thanks. One more iTunes question. Can you make your own album art or is it all protected for copyright reasons? I bought a (legal) recording of the Pearl Jam concert I attended but you can't get album art for it. I thought about downloading a Pearl Jam 20th anniversary image and using that as the album art. Just for aesthetics.

Here are ways to add artwork to music and video:
To add artwork to one item, select an item in your iTunes library and drag the art file to the artwork viewer.
(The artwork viewer is the large box in the lower left hand corner of iTunes. It will have a dotted perimeter with the instructions "Drag Artwork Here")

To add artwork to multiple items, select an item, choose File > Get Info, and click Artwork. To add art to the selected item, click Add (or drag the art file from your desktop to the artwork viewer). Click Next to add artwork to the next item.

To add the same artwork to multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click each item, choose File > Get Info, click Artwork, and drag the art file to the artwork viewer.

To add more than one piece of art to a song, drag more than one image to the same artwork box.

To retrieve album artwork for songs in your library, select the songs and choose Advanced > Get Album Artwork.

To have iTunes automatically download album artwork when you import a CD or add songs with missing artwork, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Store, and select “Automatically download missing album artwork.”

Ah good there's a thread here.

As anyone on the live chat threads will know I've been having a a few connection problems. Now it's seemed to have spawned into something quantifiable. Basically when someone connects to the router wirelessly, the pc connected via cable is slowed to a fault.

Some background: There's 1 pc (old) connected by LAN, there's no wireless feature on the pc. Otherwise we have 4 other computers, all laptops connected via WLAN.

Now there's no problem with any of the laptops or usually with the pc but as soon as any laptop connects to the router at the same time as the pc the net on the pc just starts playing silly buggers. Firefox freezes like there's a processing problem or it wont connect at all to the net. Chrome is the same without the feezing, sites just don't load. F5'ing a million times usually works but the freezes can last 10-30 seconds at a time so its very annoying.

This started up about Monday, when for whatever reason, our internet plan with our ISP delayed going onto the next month by about a day and a bit. In the process their troubleshooting help had me reset the modem but I restored most (all?) of the settings I had on before.

So basically I'm asking is if anyone has heard of this problem or knows of a way to try and fix it. :D

hi,

well I have a web form I made using asp.net (visual 2010) and SQL express.

so i have a web service where the database is accessed, which links to the webform.
I need to have a new (add user with unique ID), update (update info as long as ID is already in database) and delete (delete user depending on ID) which is fine and I have managed to do.
However I also need a read function. Unfortunately I am having trouble with this.

here is my web method which gives the return value for read:

Code: [Select]
[WebMethod]
        public bool ReadPerson(int ID, string FIRSTNAME, string SURNAME, string ADDRESS)
        {
            // In case of failure failure first
            bool rtn = false;

            // Connect to the Database
            SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(
                @"Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;
    AttachDbFilename='|DataDirectory|\Database.mdf';
    Integrated Security=True;
    User Instance=True");

            // Open the connection
            connection.Open();

            // Prepare an SQL Command
            SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(
                String.Format("SELECT FIRSTNAME, SURNAME, ADDRESS FROM PersonalDetails WHERE ID = '{0}'", ID),
                connection);

            // Execute the SQL command and get a data reader.
            SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader();

            // Instruct the reader to read the first record.
            if (reader.Read())
            {
                // A record exists, thus the return value is updated
                FIRSTNAME = (string)reader["FIRSTNAME"];
                SURNAME = (string)reader["SURNAME"];
                ADDRESS = (string)reader["ADDRESS"];

                rtn = true;

           }

            // Close the connection
            connection.Close();

            // Return the result.
            return (rtn);
        }

so on my webform when I click read I get a success message but taht is because of the rtn = true; statement I assume, I believe I need to give rtn the read value for each input, but I am unsure how to do this.

what I need for this code to do is, when I click read (with an already stored ID in the ID textfield) it should update the other text fields (firstname, lastname, address) with their stored inputs in the database, but rather nothing happens.

what I need for this code to do is, when I click read (with an already stored ID in the ID textfield) it should update the other text fields (firstname, lastname, address) with their stored inputs in the database, but rather nothing happens.

If I understood you correctly, you return rtn (a boolean) when what you actually want are the results for FIRSTNAME, LASTNAME and ADDRESS. Assuming these variables are properly defined, then you simply need to return an array of the three results instead and address that instead. A properly formed array can be used to test true anyway, without needing the rtn variable.

I don't know the exact syntax (you will need to figure that bit out) but it would be something like:

Code: [Select]
// create an empty array using a List collection because it doesn't need a pre-defined size
List<string> current_user = new List<string>();

if (reader.Read()) {
                // A record exists, thus the return value is updated
               current_user.Add(reader["FIRSTNAME"]);
               current_user.Add(reader["SURNAME"]);
               current_user.Add(reader["ADDRESS"]);
}
else {
  // no results
}

return current_user;

...

if(current_user.Count !== 0) {
   foreach (string field in current_user) {
      Response.Write(field);
   }
}
else {
// no results
}

The blurb says that C# has a little system array object called List. You make an instance of that and stuff it with the three results. If the length of the instance is not zero, then that's the equivalent of your rtn = true.

Hi thaks for the help,
actually got it working, disregarded the bool however.

I ended using using a public class instead, and providing new values to the behind code.

I want to purchase a new laptop. I pretty much know what I want. My question is purchase now or wait for Windows 8 in the fall. What I have heard so far about 8 is all very positive. What features does it provide that 7 is lacking and will those features one day become necessary?

I'm not a Windows person, and studiously ignore everything from Microsoft. My question back at you is - how desperate are you to buy a new laptop? Personally, I'd buy it now. You never know how Windows 8 will turn out (remember, Vista was supposed to be a great improvement). And you never know if the first versions out will be any good, of whether it would be best to wait until after the first few updates.

I'd try to find out if there are any expected minimum specification requirements of the new system, and make sure that your new laptop exceeds those specifications - this will give you the option of upgrading at a later date. Hard disk spaces are enormous these days, unless you download / create a lot of videos. Get the fastest processor and biggest RAM specs you can afford.

I would get a laptop now, with windows 7. its a brilliantly stable os, and works just dandy.

Im running the developer windows 8, and its a pretty big diversion from windows 7, some improvements, but a lot of changes that are much more aimed at touchscreens, pads etc.

If you buy from one of the top manufactures, you will probably find that laptops bought within 3 months of windows 8 launch will get free upgrades. They did last time.

Ok here is a question that has been bothering me. I consider myself pretty tech savvy or at least I learn things quickly....
but. I'm needing a new laptop...everything I read tells me to wait until fall at least because of major changes coming in the macs . I would like to buy an Macbook Air...but that depends on my job in a few months, so for now have been thinking of picking up a refurbished ipad 2.

I would basically need this for web surfing , and minimal tasks atm but am wondering if I could successfully watch the live race feeds like on rai and sporza and eurosport etc ???? since the ipad is not supporting flash what does this mean w/r to these streams??

Wouldn't like to comment on the choice of device but most of the popular race streams are delivered using interfaces developed in Flash, so that might preclude anything on which it's not supported.

I think non flash streams work, no? And I also think that iswifter and skyfire browser interprets flash for the ipad. I'm not sure about it, and it's definitely not free.

Thank you Larri, AG and ram for the feedback!
Yes, Larri, I know the cons of the ipad...and I am not a blind 'cult' follower....it's just that for my needs right at the moment and what I will be using it for including travel, that it seemed like something that would suit me. Believe me, I have two boys who are computer 'geeks' and they can not recommend that this is something to spend $$ on either ;D my older son, 17yrs, built his own computer last year and is a die-hard pc man as well as my younger son who is following in his footsteps .. ;)

I like the sleekness and the beauty of how things appear on the screen....and the simplicity and clean lines as well. I think ram may be correct in that you can download apps for facilitating viewing of live streams....
AG I like to watch rai feeds so know that will work, but will have to research the other possiblities.

anyway, I sure appreciate the replies...will continue to check this out.

Im a bit confused, half the people are talking about ipads, half the team talking about laptop/macbook notepad.

If you are buying a tablet it really comes down to android or apple, and what you get depends on what you use it for. Tablets are used mainly for browsing, reading books and all that, so an ipad with skyfire does.

However, seems like you are talking about buying an actual laptop. On that basis, for sheer convenience, I would go with traditional x86/64 based rather than a macbook. Just for the sheer convenience of it, but the flash is a huge issue if you want to watch live streams. Firstly, although skyfire does an ok job its still far from perfect, and the days that streams start to appear in html5 is a long long way away.

Secondly, streaming is developing, but rather than moving from embedded flash to html5 its moving to software approaches which use the broadcasters direct stream which still in the vast majority of cases is flash based. Look at this year, Giro, we had a windows based app,dauphine, we had a supersports app, tour of switzerland, we have an app, tour de france, we will have an app. Streaming direct through rmtp to your media player is becoming more popular, but on the whole 99.9% of these programs only support windows (and in some cases linux).

If you want livestreaming, windows based laptop, if you dont, apple laptop.If you want a tablet, get what you like :D

ok, just read you cant afford a macbook so are looking at refurb ipad 2. For the same price you can get a very good windows laptop. The laptop will also hold its value fairly well, i sold my 5 year old laptop on ebay for £200, ipads wont hold their value quite as well.

Sub £300 (yes uk but as an example)
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/11893355/art/toshiba/satellite-c660d-1hk-15-6.html?srcid=11270&nopopup=1

Dual Core processor, AMD graphics, 6gb memory (so usually dedicates about 500+mb to graphics but handles up to 1500mb), 320gb hard drive, windows 7 64 bit.. under £300

A refurbished ipad 2 over here costs over £300

I know which id choose.

Yes, I realize you get way more for your money with a windows pc, and believe me that is what my boys both have-- as you get a large value and way more memory, etc compared to a mac.

I've owned a little hp mini for traveling...it's been handy and has an almost full size keyboard...small and fits in my bag....my artistic side needs to get the stupid ipad I guess. :-[ :-\

At a later point I will purchase a laptop but I guess after so many years of pc-ing and value watching I am just going to treat myself! 8) :D may be stupid ...
I think I will enjoy using it a lot.
I just wanted to make sure that I could actually watch cycling on it... ??? that is really important to me.

btw..I'm not a gamer, don't care at all about games on the computer..
and I mostly surf the web and do photo stuff...and email

lol just noticed the toshiba satellite...that is what my younger son has...a great deal when he bought it..around $500ish and he uses a lot of graphics and it was a super buy!

its very similar to the satellite i have.. kicks arse

i think apple users have just come to expect that streaming on an apple is nigh on pointless. It is possible, hell, ive spent hours trying to get streams to work for people, but rarely been succesful. At some point i need to get a derilict unwanted apple in the house just to use for testing
