I wouldn't say Basso is completely past it, but he is getting worse it seems. However, he could definitely win the Giro one more time if he prepares well. This year though I think it will be hard. They should send Nibali there as well, and see in the race who becomes the leader (which would be Nibali I guess).

For the Tour they'd still have both Sagan and Viviani, so they could definitely win some stages there.

Rumours of Ivan's demise are premature. Obviously he will never recreate Giro 2006 form, but last year in the Tour his whole preparation was f***ed up beyond belief by the crash and he still came 7th and in the heads of state on the Galibier stage where even The Great One and Sammy were dropped (admitedly after singlehandidly making the race interesting for the previous week).

Basso on top form should still win this.

Rumours say they'll go both. Then after the first week the leader will be decided and the other could leave and prepare the tdf.

THeyll decide the leader based on what? Who comes closer to the top 50 in the sprint stages?
Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Mellow Velo posted a report in the CN CQ game thread that Vivani broke his pelvis in the Omnium in the Track WCs.

If Nibali is anything like his best form he should go to Giro as sole leader, with Basso having to accept he hasnt got the form at the moment, but can still be helper-deluxe.

Then both to the tour and see if either are in a position to do anything for GC.

That might leave the Vuelta looking a little thin GC wise, but there is a feeling it wouldnt suit either of them, but Sagan could go on a Freddy Maertens like tear winning sprints and uphill finishes.

Didnt ivan say he felt the vuelta was ideal for him ?

As I recall he did say that.  Im sure you will agree that that doesnt necessarily make it true, and there could be a number of reason why he might say it knowing it wasnt true/not realising it wasnt true.

I havent looked at the vuelta stages for a while, but seem to remember there are several punchy finishes that might expose him.  I was really looking for a justification to not sending either of the team's GT GC candidates to the race, if they both ride both Giro and Tour.

If only the old Cunego returned. It's hard to call the current Cunego 'awesome'.

he did unexpectedly well at the tdf last year.
And if he can't make the podium at this Giro I'll go trolling in every Tour fanboys thread saying the field of the Giro is comparable to the Tour  ;D

Fignon - In my day, doping methods were derisory and the riders´exploits were massive.
For the last 15 years or so  it has been the other way rond: there is a huge number of ways in which riders can dope, and any exploits are derisory.

I really honestly thought Frank would do the Giro  and then support Andy for the tour.

Oh well - Fuglsang will be happy
