Which mapping programme do you use?
« on: March 06, 2012, 13:45 »
Over the years I have tried Endomondo, Ride with GPS, Mind the Pedal and a host of others.

Since picking up a second half Garmin I have been using Garming Connect whilst trying to keep my Mapmyride page up to date!

Now a lot of my mates are on Strava as you can set segments and race against each other..!

What does everyone else use ?

I still use an old copy of Garmin Mapsource for planning my walks (yeah, not strictly cycling but...). Mapsource is now being phased out in favour of Basecamp. On top of either I have a Belgium & Luxembourg Topo map. I own a few others of different regions too. But over here in Belgium, OpenStreetMaps is strongly supported with lots of good routing options: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Routing

Output-wise, I don't do anything sophisticated. But if I did, I'd probably write my own web-based display solution rather than go with all those websites.

Endomondo mainly. That is what i use to check my mileages etc. Starting using it when i did not have Garmin and could record rides on my phone.

Now i have Garmin I load my rides onto Garmin Connect as well but actually do not read it that much. Just have a glance at ride stats as you get more data.

I have tried using Strava as friends use it but again have loaded rides but do not pay much attention to it. I know a lot of people like it for competitive side but frankly i am so slow i am not beating anyone so that side is less appealing.  I have used it for looking for suggested rides.

+1 for Garmin Connect and Strava. The good thing about Strava is that it's social networking too, so you can follow other riders. Our club is on there, and we can see each other's rides when we're not together. And I do like the segments and KoM thing.

I use MapMyRide to plot courses of specific lengths for training, although I only do them on the computer - I don't download them or anything (if you can actually do that).

Yeah just started using strava more. Like the way it emails me to tell me mate has been out training. Gives me a little nag each time to get on the bike

I use:

TrainingPeaks to plan out my training and keep track of major metrics.
Garmin Connect to collect and report on my training files,
MapMyRide for looking up routes and designing new courses, and
BikeRouteToaster for creating courses that I then download to the Garmin for use on the road.

Would love it if MapMyRide would allow for downloading routes to gpx or tcx files that I could put on my Garmin.  I particularly like the way that MMMR classifies climbs on your route.  Even better would be if TrainingPeaks included a MapMyRide component so all planning and tracking could be done in one place!

However, I have utterly no interest in the Strava style competitive social network concept...

Routes ive ridden, i just put them in garmin training centre and be done with it. I have no great need to put them online, share them with others, compare rides, or tweet about how many miles i rode and wether i felt good/great/or average.

I have though tried most of the main mapping sites, connect is ok, but the one i would never use again is mapmyride. unintuative, clunky, and an utter pain in the arse to use. I also have questions over their security, within 24 hours of granting them twitter access my twitter account was hacked and ive seen a ,lot of people with mmr accounts suffer the same fate.

If i need to plot a route to put in the garmin to go somewhere i use bikemap, its by far the easiest mapping software and they have a very good collection of overlay choices, including mapquest, google, and open streetmap and open bikemap.
If i need to convert gpx to crs, tcx etc on the fly then i use gpsies which is also superb (but crap for plotting routes).

Like i say, social networking with bike rides is something i dont desire. .no great desire to tell everyone on facebook and twitter that i rode 40km in 2 hours and felt ok..

Have used Garmin Connect for years, find it ok to keep a personal track of my training and racing.

Downloaded the Strava app a couple of months ago, love it. Adds a bit of fun to training. Generally gets a bit of email banter going around in the morning when people get into the office, read the Strava email and see who's been doing what.

I'm also using Garmin Connect now. I'm finding it pretty decent but only as good as the map data themselves: here in Belgium, a lot of "roads" on the map are not really roads but dirt tracks and pathways. ;)

Posting of Garmin Connect activities via the Share > Embed feature is now supported on VR. Simply paste in the link inside the iframe code they give you (not the whole code).

So:

<iframe width='465' height='548' frameborder='0' src='http:// connect.garmin.com:80 / activity / embed / 204344479 '></iframe>

gives you...

I played with Strava for a while, but I like Runtastic. Mainly because it offers a countdown to the start, so I get time to put my phone away before riding. Recent upgrades have offered auto-pause (for traffic lights, etc.) and some sort of Google Earth tie in which I haven't played with yet.

It has a social media element, but I'm with Dim - I don't want to use it. I like having my stats accessible online, though.

There's some brilliant tools for messing about with your Strava data.

Here's a list of them:

I used to use Ride with GPS, but haven't tried it in ages, but have used Strava more lately, and occasionally the Garmin one.
For route planning I used to use '3d route builder' software but I don't think there is much development going on with that any more.
the BikeRouteToaster thing looks great and I will try that out - been looking for something like that in a while.
Tried Endomondo and TrainingPeaks briefly, but find more use with strava as I can share routes with a few people I know.
