Title: 2022 Tour de France CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on June 23, 2022, 00:06
It's nearly July, so the non-cycling fan world suddenly becomes aware of our sport, and we find ourselves trapped between on one hand wanting to be dismissive of the hype and asserting how much better the racing is in every other event of the year, and on the other knowing that this race encompasses the best riders seeking to be at their peak.

But we can take pride in burrowing down into the less fabled riders among the peloton and showing our expertise and judgement in the Tour de France CQ game.

Or you can be proud of being a July fan and just pick anyone you have heard of, or who has a name you like the sound of: you'll probably still beat some of us.

Your team Your task is to pick 8 riders who will be taking part in the Tour, and who between them have a total current CQ score of 4000 or less.  That CQ score is their tally of points from the previous year, as allotted at CQRanking.com (http://CQRanking.com): more specifically, their score for the year to Sunday 26th June, which will be available for download on the 27th.

Your score Your score is also on a scale determined by the CQ site: The biggest points are for GC (600 for the winner, 20 for anyone who finishes), but there are stage points (80 for the winner, 1 for 10th), points for the KoM and Green jersey final classifications (same scale as stage points) and a 20 point daily bonus for the man who is to wear Yellow on the next stage.

Entering the Game Firstly: don't try to do so until the prices are set after CQ has processed all the points from national championships weekend on Sunday.  But when your team is ready, send it to me by PM at either Cycling News Forum or on VeloRooms.  It saves me time if you put the name in CQ's format (surname, then forename; particular care needed on riders from Spanish speaking countries, Portugal and Denmark; accents are handled inconsistently) and put nothing else in your message: I don't need you to tell me their team or price.  You must do so by the time the first rider starts on the Time Trial course in Copenhagen at 4pm local time on Friday 1st July.  As soon as possible after the first team is sent in, I will share my selection with that manager to avoid me being tempted to steal good ideas from other managers.  You can change your team after you send it in if you have second thoughts before the deadline: if there is a problem with your selection I will let you know unless you leave it until the last few hours.  I do have an established set of rules for making substitutions in your team if it is overbudget or has non-participating riders.

During the race  There is nothing you have to do, and nothing you can do, once the race starts.  I will do updates daily (real life permitting) in a minor competition (based on stage top ten points only) as well as the main game, which will become more realistic as the GC becomes more settled.

There is no prize beyond bragging rights, but if you are on VeloRooms I can add a little yellow or green jersey to your profile, which is nice...

Can I help?If you have any questions, feel free to post them here, or send them to me by PM.
But I also hope I can help via this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12n7HYE-HIAlNaGdkOMjXf-h6qL6Vi6rO/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true) which I will update as the team line-ups become clearer, which helps you compile a team within budget, gives the preferred presentation of names, shows the scheme for the points you can win, and will have the correct prices from Monday afternoon.  Search will, if he is true to his former very helpful self, put a list of riders and prices up when most are confirmed in this thread.

So I hope you will have a go, whether you are one of the regulars (you have to take part in this to be part of my 4 seasons challenge) or new to these games, or normally only try the annual game.  And see of you can persuade someone else to have a go, even if they are just sticking a pin in a list of names: they won't be the only one (unless RhD changes tactic)

Good luck, and enjoy the game and the racing.

CQ didn't post the upload until well into the evening, by which time I had gone out, but now the selection spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12n7HYE-HIAlNaGdkOMjXf-h6qL6Vi6rO/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true) has all the right prices (and nearly all the right riders: just a couple of teams to confirm)

So the game is fully open: let the teams flood in.

Every team but EF is confirmed now, but there may still be some more late changes. EBH just came in for Rodriguez at Total, Senechal for Declercq at Quickstep

And finally EF have named their team, so now you can do the same.

Trentin out with Covid, Hirschi in for UAE.
( I see Search already has put up Hirschi's score so....)

yeah, there was a change at Astana as well (Battistella/Riabushenko)

Goldstein out, Boivin in for Israel. Impey could be next.

It’s like a magic turnstile….

GVA on standby as Bob Jungels needs a different test result by tomorrow morning

Boivin for Goldstein and Riabushenko for Battistelli both done above and on the spreadsheet.  Maybe they will be the last.  If Jungels is out that will affect more than one already submitted team...

Perichon for Coquard, Niv for Impey (who was on 3 teams, managers informed) now on the list on this page and on the spreadsheet.

Hoping that is the end of tinkering with startlists.

32 teams so far (there were 39 last year), 91 different riders selected, 45 as unique picks and one clear most popular pick, one other on nearly half the teams, and another five on at least a quarter. Ten riders have been picked with a price of more than 1000 points, nine different cheap (<50 points) makeweights have been picked.

2 teams still need to get back to me about their overbudget selection/inclusion of Impey.

The deadline is 4pm Danish time tomorrow (well, today now), but if you want me to check it will have to be with me by about 7:30 in the morning (UK time)

Don't miss out!

And the race is underway, and we have 38 teams.  I haven't sent an acknowledgement to those that entered today, but they were all fine.

I had messed up my timings: "4 o'clock in Denmark, that's great, just starting at 5 as I get in from work".  I normally know which way the clock goes.  So I missed most of the significant action (but not the winning ride)

Among the team listings, keep an eye out for:

Jumbo Visma Fan being very loyal to a team (but not TJV),
Samu being very Francophile (if only the 8th man were Pierre Saguin),
the biggest investment in one rider ever seen in a CQ game by Yellow Knight, thus preventing Rote Laterne taking that record,
a couple of teams with Ganna whose hopes for the early lead look likely to be thwarted by Bicycle Boy,
Del 1962 and Carrick-on-Seine battling it out to name the oldest team in CQ history

Riders
95 of the 176 riders have been selected: 43 of them are unique picks, not listed here.  The most popular pick is on 68% of teams, which is not particularly high compared to previous editions, but will still make his performance null in a lot of battles for places.

26 teams:  THOMAS Geraint
19:  EWAN Caleb
15:  SAGAN Peter
11:  PINOT Thibaut
10:  FUGLSANG Jakob, HAIG Jack
8:  BARDET Romain, JANSEN Amund Grøndahl
Those 8 make up the Collective Wisdom team, which would be comfortably within budget at 3713
7:  JUNGELS Bob, MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe, O'CONNOR Ben, VLASOV Aleksandr
6:  GAUDU David, VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
5:  BENNETT George, GROENEWEGEN Dylan, ROLLAND Pierre, SCHACHMANN Maximilian
4: BETTIOL Alberto, CARUSO Damiano, GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida, KÄMNA Lennard, LATOUR Pierre, LEKNESSUND Andreas, MÜHLBERGER Gregor, VAN DER POEL Mathieu
3:  CATTANEO Mattia, EEKHOFF Nils, FROOME Chris, JORGENSON Matteo, LAFAY Victor, MEINTJES Louis, QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc, URAN URAN Rigoberto, VAN MOER Brent
2:  BAGIOLI Andrea, BISSEGGER Stefan, CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan, CORT NIELSEN Magnus, DEGENKOLB John, DILLIER Silvan, DUCHESNE Antoine, GANNA Filippo, GOGL Michael, GOOSSENS Kobe, GOUGEARD Alexis, IZAGIRRE INSAUSTI Gorka, KRIEGER Alexander, PIDCOCK Thomas, VERMAERKE Kevin, YATES Adam

There weren't too many affected by late covid withdrawals: of the teams who had Impey, most rejigged their team and Rufs said that he was happy with the default replacement of Gogl.

And I drove home suspecting that I would have to adjust loads of teams in response to messages taking TBV riders out for fear of disqualification, but no-one did that.

I didn't include yesterday:
Team simiilarity
In the past I have sometimes had to ask teams to select a 9th rider because their teams are so similar, but nothing like the same amount of overlap between teams this year, perhaps because the lack of multiple obvious mid-market standout picks means there is a greater range of picks from the most and least expensive ends of the pricelist.

Riders that are in the Collective Wisdom team:
5: AmisVelo, Leadbelly, Scrooll07, Titan31

Comodoro: Armchair Cyclist, Carrick-on-Seine, DJSprtsch

Jumbo Visma Fan: 15 teams with 1 rider (most commonly Fuglsang) shared
Los Brolin: 9 teams with 3 riders shared
Postman Hat: Carrick-on-Seine and Titan 31
Redhead Dane: 18 teams with whom she shares Ewan
Rote Laterne: Amis Velo, Bminchow and Mellow Velo (2 shared)
Salvarani: Evans is the Best and Laarsland
Samu Cuenca: 9 teams with 2 shared riders
Search: Bonimenier and Lecko
Vladimir: 6 teams with 2 shared
Yellow Knight: Blues in the Bottle and Salvarani (2)
Zigzag Warrior: Amis Velo and Rufs (2)
and all other permutations visible on the 'Team similarity' tab on the spreadsheet.

And if anyone else noticed that a team was missing from the major investments post, Redhead Dane doesn't have anyone above the 700 point threshhold I used in that post, Madouas being her most expensive team member.

The other key info I missed last night was the Inter Forum Challenge
The VeloRooms team is:
18Valve, AmisVelo, ArchieBoy, ChrisDK, DJW, Josedin, Leadbelly, Mellow_Velo, Otoxiep87, Rote_Laterne, Scrooll07 and Search
and everyone else (except me: I stay neutral) is for Cycling News and the averages are taken to compare them.
After stage one, it is no surprise considering the gap to second that the challenge is led by the page of choice of Bicycle Boy:        CN 440 vs 325 VR

I won't link to the spreadsheet every day, but the location won't change: it is here, at Google Docs. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12v5HRwdoVzvTNVEvRpZ3IiU6dvnALgKw/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true)  That will be updated each evening, normally.  I am away for part of the last weekend, but we'll see what we can do about that when we get to it.

Stage 2
The bridge of sighs of disappointment

Green points
JAKOBSEN Fabio      80      1
VAN AERT Wout      50      0
PEDERSEN Mads      35      0
VAN POPPEL Danny      25      0
PHILIPSEN Jasper      15      1
SAGAN Peter      10      15
LECROQ Jérémy      5      0
GROENEWEGEN Dylan      3      5
MOZZATO Luca      2      0

1      Josedin      80
2      JumboVismaFan      15
3      18Valve      13

5      13 teams with Sagan   10
18      BluesInTheBottle      3
18      ChrisDK      3
18      PostmanHat      3

Standings
This is the minor classification, so I'll normally just give the top ten.
All stages give the same points here, so it is not weighted in favour of sprint stages the way that the 'real life' Green jersey classification is (and no intermediate points here either)

1      BicycleBoy      130      0
2      Josedin      80      12
3      Yellow_Knight      35      -1
4      JumboVismaFan      30      0
5      DJSprtsch      25      -2
6      18Valve      18      1
6      PostmanHat      18      -2
8      LosBrolin      15      -1
8      Northerner      15      -1
8      Salvarani      15      -4

Yellow points
Because this ranking is, until we get to Paris, based on projections, points can drop as well as rise (eg Lampaert is no longer projected for winning).  On sprint stages, or breakaway victories with no GC impact, there may be very little change here other than the day's stage points.  On major GC stages, there may be huge change here.  But not today (I'll list main gains and losses by riders who are selected in the game)
JAKOBSEN Fabio      130      1
SAGAN Peter      35      15
PHILIPSEN Jasper      15      1
GANNA Filippo      -25      2
CORT NIELSEN Magnus      -30      2
POGACAR Tadej      -35      1
VAN DER POEL Mathieu      -45      4
LAMPAERT Yves      -215      1

2      Carrick_on_Seine      58

Stage 6  Uphill finish at Longwy

I guess Pogacar didn't lose all his energy for those 13 seconds yesterday, but why make an effort for 15km to get 13 seconds when you can get 10 for a 400 metre effort?

Green points

Eight of the top ten in a stage having been selected may well be as many as we will get.

Standings
I use elimination of the highest scoring rider as the tiebreaker when scores are equal (although if it is too far down the table, I generally don't bother)

Yellow Points

Stage 7 The pretty girls' super bench

This looks to be a pattern that will repeat itself many times in the remaining 2 weeks.

Standings
At this stage, Vingegaard seems to be the essential pick: the top three all have him, but so do three teams who are not in the top ten.  Yellow Knight has Pogacar, who obviously brings more points individually, but leaves little in the budget: his other 7 riders each contribute only the 20 points for projected arrival in Paris.

Apologies: an error in yesterday's data in terms of how much the position of the top ten had changed compared to the previous day.  But now you have a permanent record of how much your green ranking had changed between stage 6 and 7 if you were in the top ten, and you can easily enough compare tables if you really want to know your daily change

Stage 8
Visiting IOC today, UCI tomorrow, like they've been summonsed for some indiscretion.

Green points
VAN AERT Wout      80      0
MATTHEWS Michael      50      0
POGACAR Tadej      35      1
KRON Andreas Lorentz      25      1
BETTIOL Alberto      15      4

VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas      3      6
JUNGELS Bob      2      7
PIDCOCK Thomas      1      2

Perseverance award to Zigzag, who finally gets his first points in this classification, and a good share of them too, through a unique pick of Kron.

Yellow points
Those who should be high in GC already were, so today didn't have much of a sorting effect, thus less dramatic changes here.  But the number of non-finishers is creeping up, which don't necessarily reduce a score a lot, but damages point earning potential.

Stage 9  Into the Alps via the Jungel

A lot later than usual, but a bit of extra info to make up for it.

Green points
We've done it again: the whole top ten are selected for the game.  Well done us.
JUNGELS Bob      80      7
CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan      50      2
VERONA QUINTANILLA Carlos      35      1
PINOT Thibaut      25      11

THOMAS Geraint      5      26
YATES Adam      3      2
MAS NICOLAU Enric      2      1
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander      1      3

So it would appear that Zigzag was just giving us all a chance by not scoring at all on the first 7 stages, and that he is in fact a master of this part of the game (Jungels, Verona and Pinot):

Non Finishers
We are up to 11 now (but thankfully no extras due to covid tests today), 8 of whom were selected for the game

Martin & Bouchard: Samu Cuenca
Haig & Guerreiro: Archie Boy
Haig & Gogl: Rufs

Haig:Amis Velo, Armchair Cyclist, Mellow Velo, Otoxiep87, Salvarani, Scrool07, TRiley36, ZigZag Wanderer
Asgreen: Bicycle Boy
Guerreiro: Leadbelly, Los Brolin, Titan 31
Moscon: Vladimir
Gogl: Jumbo Visma Fan
Vermaerke: Laarsland, Yellow Knight

However, if your team is predicated upon big investments in Martinez, Van der Poel or O'Connor, you're not much better off.

Technically, O'Connor is not out of the race until sign on tomorrow, but I hadn't read of his withdrawal when I was writing the above.  So add to the teams suffering a lost rider:
Amis Velo, Mellow Velo, TRiley36, ZigZag Wanderer(each also had Haig)
ChrisDK, DJW, Scrooll07

Less than a minute between 2nd and 7th in the GC, and a lot of point variation between those places seems possible.  Unlike the Tour, not over yet.

Standings

This time it is having Morkov that makes 18 Valve lose a bit more ground.  But the gains and losses between the top two each day have been marginal for a while.

I might get a chance to do an update on which riders are making what point contributions tomorrow, but in case I don't, the spreadsheet is here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12v5HRwdoVzvTNVEvRpZ3IiU6dvnALgKw?rtpof=true&authuser=kevinmce63%40gmail.com&usp=drive_fs)

And the interforum challenge remains rather one sided:

Top two  teams
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
THOMAS Geraint
EWAN Caleb
SAGAN Peter
are common to both teams,

so the difference is being made by:
Northerner
BARDET Romain
JORGENSON Matteo
ROLLAND Pierre
EEKHOFF Nils

18 Valve
GROENEWEGEN Dylan
PIDCOCK Thomas
BAUER Jack
(MØRKØV CHRISTENSEN Michael)

So the key points seem to be Groenewegen on stages 19 and 21, and whether Pidcock and or Bardet maintain (or even improve) on their current positions.  Or whether Bauer, Eekhoff, Jorgensen or Rolland go mad on a breakaway, at a push.

Stage 16  Into the Pyrenees, then down to Foix

Green points
HOULE Hugo      80      0
MADOUAS Valentin      50      1
WOODS Michael      35      0
JORGENSON Matteo      25      3
STORER Michael      15      1
VLASOV Aleksandr      10      7
TEUNS Dylan      5      0
GESCHKE Simon      3      1
BURGAUDEAU Mathieu      2      0
CARUSO Damiano      1      4

RhD gets 5 times as many green points today as her total from the previous 15 stages.  But don't worry, she's still last (here at least).  Of the three teams on 25 points, it is Archie who has Storer and Vlasov rather than Jorgenson.

Standings
No positional change in the top ten, only Northerner got more than 1 point.

Standings
18 Valve has a zero sum day, with Vingegaard's yellow jersey bonus cancelling out Pidcock's loss of a position.  While for Northerner, Jorgenson's exploits, even with the same maillot jaune points, can't make up for Bardet's losses on the day, so the lead changes hands again.

Stage 17
Peyragudes, the third runway finish of the Tour, and UAE have a team after all.

All of Yellow Knight's points come from one rider, but that is Pogacar.

If four guys managed to beat the twice and reigning world champion, one can only assume that they have been hiding away anonymously in the gruppetto for three weeks, saving their matches.

We have seen a battle between two teams at the top for some time, with quite a bit of change of the lead, but in the end Northerner has prevailed. The six  Vingegaard teams take the top 6 spots, and the five of them that included Thomas are the top 5, so strength in depth has been the key.

Congratulations to Northerner on victory, to 18 Valve for keeping it close, to Los Brolin for filling out the podium,
to those who made the key pick of Vingegaard, and thanks to all who competed with less success, to the riders, and to CQ and PCS for the results and numbers.

I should be able to do some analysis, but I suspect it will be more likely to be Tuesday than tomorrow.

Rather later than I had intended, but let's see what the data tells us:

Green points
Riders scoring the equivalent to 2nd on a stage or higher:
VAN AERT Wout      480      0
POGACAR Tadej      450      1 (Yellow Knight)
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas      343      6
PHILIPSEN Jasper      313      1 (Jumbo Visma Fan)
MATTHEWS Michael      182      0
PEDERSEN Mads      160      0
GROENEWEGEN Dylan      148      5
LAPORTE Christophe      125      1 (Chris DK)
THOMAS Geraint      125      26
HOULE Hugo      115      0
PIDCOCK Thomas      106      2  (18 Valve & DJSprtsch)
JAKOBSEN Fabio      97      1 (Josedin)
CORT NIELSEN Magnus      95      2  (DJSprtsch & Search)
SAGAN Peter      90      15
JUNGELS Bob      82      7
GAUDU David      80      6
LAMPAERT Yves      80      1 (Bicycle Boy)
CLARKE Simon      80      0
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander      67      3
BETTIOL Alberto      65      4
JORGENSON Matteo      65      3
PINOT Thibaut      61      11
KRISTOFF Alexander      60      0
WRIGHT Fred      57      1  (Blues in the Bottle)
MEINTJES Louis      53      3
VAN POPPEL Danny      51      0
CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan      50      2
GANNA Filippo      50      2
SCHULTZ Nicholas      50      0
MADOUAS Valentin      50      1 (Redhead Dane)
POWLESS Neilson      50      0
VAN DER HOORN Taco      50      0

As far as I can find, the best possible team targetted specifically at this classification would have been:
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
GROENEWEGEN Dylan
THOMAS Geraint
PIDCOCK Thomas
LAMPAERT Yves
HOULE Hugo
JUNGELS Bob
CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan
for 1049 green points

Top riders on top teams:
1      18Valve      818   Vingegaard/Groenewegen/Thomas/Pidcock/Sagan
2      Northerner      678   Vingegaard/Thomas/Sagan/Jorgenson
3      BluesInTheBottle      646   Vingegaard/Groenewegen/Jungels/Wright
4      LosBrolin      616   Vingegaard/Thomas/Sagan/Castroviejo
5      Lecko      549   Vingegaard/Thomas/Bettiol
6      DJSprtsch      513   Thomas/Pidcock/Cort/Jungels/Castroviejo
7      Carrick_on_Seine      512   Groenewegen/Thomas/Sagan/Jungels
8      DJW      478   Vingegaard/Thomas
9      Yellow_Knight      450   Pogacar
10      Kazistuta      422   Thomas/Sagan/Quintana/Bettiol/Pinot

Pogacar did single handedly put a team into the top ten: had anyone selected van Aert that alone would have got them 8th in this table, without any other scorer.

Yellow points
Riders getting more than 100 points
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas      1208      6
POGACAR Tadej      1060      1
VAN AERT Wout      720      0
THOMAS Geraint      506      26

ROWE Luke      50.0      0

Impeccable picks:
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
THOMAS Geraint
MEINTJES Louis
JUNGELS Bob
SCHULTZ Nicholas
CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan
MÜHLBERGER Gregor
FROOME Chris
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl

Best possible team (I think):
VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
THOMAS Geraint
MEINTJES Louis
JUNGELS Bob
PIDCOCK Thomas
HOULE Hugo
PINOT Thibaut
CASTROVIEJO NICOLAS Jonathan
costing 3979, scoring 2797, but only 57 in the popularity table.

Thanks to AC for putting this together and all the other participants.

First, the data I hadn't given at the end of the Tour, which I had decided a while ago I would put up today as a prompt for your Vuelta game entries.

Inter-Forum challenge
CN 1182
VR 1027
A resounding, if rare, victory for the team in purple.

4 seasons title
Points from the two GTs so far and the Spring Classics game, with the Vuelta to decide the honours.  Leader BitB already has his team in for the Vuelta, but we shouldn't let him have a free run at it.

El Tramodolito update
But then we had yesterday's news about Quintana.  I always regard whatever is the state of play at the end of the event according to CQ as the official record for the purposes of these games (to my own cost, blooming Roson).  I don't apply the same reasoning outside of the games, it is just a matter of being able to put a game into history and move on.

So the changes noted below will not be in the the archived results or affect the 4 seasons challenge, but for interest only.

Quintana, who was on three teams, loses all 327 points.  Those who benefited most are:
BARDET Romain      46      8
MEINTJES Louis      30      3
YATES Adam      25      2
LUTSENKO Alexey      22      1
MADOUAS Valentin      20      1

POWLESS Neilson      10      0
PINOT Thibaut      10      11

Leadbelly, with Bardet, Yates, Pinot and Thomas, would have seen the  biggest boost to his score.  The highest placed of the Quintana teams had been in 12th, so the major positions would not affected: DJSprtsch is the only manager in the top ten to gain a place when this is taken into account.
