Why don't people like Christmas? OK, Christmas music sucks, or most of it anyway. Yes, it's over-commercialised, sure. But it's a great reason to just enjoy a good dinner with friends and/or family, watch some god-awful feelgood films and pretend not to secretly enjoy them, drink just slightly too much gluhwein or other alcoholic beverages, or at the very least just enjoy a long weekend off.

And in that vein, a Christmas song that's actually enjoyable yet free of irony or sarcasm - yes, they do exist! ;)

I was glad to hear the song on a public square in downtown Brussels, the other day. Kind of reconcile me with the city, lol.

Every year at the same period I'm listening to that song. The problem about it is that you can't really listen to it in July, lol. Emerson Lake & Palmer is one of the geatest prog rock band ever and one of my faves.  :cool

I'm astonished that Phil Spector's album has only got one brief mention! All other Xmas albums and songs (apart from Shakey's Merry Christmas Everyone) are but pale shadows in comparison.

Also, Dylan's Xmas album is an absolute hoot. My wife said: 'he sounds like a chainsaw.' Awesome.

And finally Elvis's Xmas records: check out his Vegas-era 'O Come All Ye Faithful'

Already shared on the cover thread, but since I made myself a new Nativity scene, everytime I think of the the "Three Wise Men", I have this song in mind: "Sheila - Les Rois mages"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h5rRAuI3EU

It's weird that the English language does not refer to those characters as Magi, only "Wise Men".

The song is a cover song of Middle of the Road's "Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum" but the French songwriter radically changed the lyrics. Sheila also performed the same song in Spanish "Los Reyes Magos" and it became a #1 hit in Argentina, I think. That is how Middle of the Road re-wrote their own song in Spanish but with the Wise Men theme "Los Reyes Magos".

I think Sheila gives a lot more energy to the song than Sally Carr, singer of Middle of the Road and it's justice that her song became a hit. Shame that her personal life did not match her exquisite talent!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO_w88QMQ1U&list=RDBO_w88QMQ1U&start_radio=1

For sure I'm going to listen to those songs again at the Epiphany (6 January).  :D
