It might be a good idea to have a catchall non-football/cricket general topic until such time as there are enough people with interest in other specific sports to start separate topics for them.
At the moment, for example, we're in the run-up to the Super Bowl, then there's ice hockey and basketball until the baseball season starts - and these are just US sports.
So, whatever else floats your boat, have at it here.
-
Golf anyone?
Qatar master start tomorrow. Lee Westwood, Quiros, Thomas Bjorn, Jason Day and Hunter Mahan are playing. Not sure about the others but I'd be surprised if Ernie and Robert Rock missed it.
-
Anyone here apart from myself and maybe Scott and 13 have any interest in Sunday night's Super Bowl?
Live on the BBC and on ESPN America for Euro viewers. I would prefer the Giants to win, but suspect that the Pats will prevail in the end.
-
world superbikes and moto gp i also spent 13 years kickboxing so i still quite enjoy that

Yep , I am on the Giants , Always believed in the ethos that defense wins championships and hopefully the Pats defense lives up to it's reputation as being pathetic tomorrow.

Not massively, will watch internet coverage from work on monday no doubt but do not really care who wins. My token support for NFL goes to New Orleans (based on my simple support the saints in any sport rule)
-
Love both series -but especially super bikes. Really miss being able to watch them since moving to Canada - apparently we can only get to watch them by paying
exorbitant US satellite fees (even the official websites are geo blocked!) ... :(
If anyone out there knows how I can get to watch them online, I'd be grateful for what you could tell me ... And my better half would be over the moon, as she is even more of a bike racing addict than I am! :)
Great, there are a few around. Speedway grand prix is another thing I follow. Aye, it's only four laps around an oval, but they're four fantastic laps. Melandri and Sayfutdinov are my favourites, though I never mind a Jason Crump victory.
John Daly's (yes, the legend with wonky trousers) having all the luck in the world in the Qatar masters, an early first round dodging the blustery winds and missing the second which was suspended due to high winds. Leading ahead Gonzalo Fernandez Castano.
-
I would like the Giants to win because the Patriots a) knocked out the Ravens and b) are the Patriots. :D
-
Amsterhammer, you know i'll be watching, too!
we should definitely have a virtual SuperBowl party here!
-
Go Patriots!!!

High five, those are exactly my reasons too. ;)

Don't watch NFL but always watch superbowl.
Like the spectacle, love the fact that some countries have their own sports, not just everyone for soccer, love the half time shows (apart from last year total ****ing disgrace and this year don't look too great) the whole hoopla behind it, the introductions, the techmology, the acknowledgment of the armed services, the closed arenas, the money that goes into it etc etc. Basically everything American about sport that we don't get here in europe.
Its something different. Don't really know anything about the teams so will just hope its close and exciting.
-
first blood!
-
im lover of most sports, can't wait for the footy to start again in aus :)
-
Finding it very hard to get excited by this so far. Fantastic stage setup but the whole Madonna mega ego trip adoration sh!t makes me wanna puke.
-
i expected it to be sh*te and it was... yawn.
-
holy f*ck!
-
Giants! Pleased the team I was going for because I didn't want the other team to win, won. :D
-
holy f*ck!
Yup, anything could have happened on that last hail mary. Pats wilted under pressure at the end, having 'given away' the TD. ;D

Any skiing or rugby fans here?

Any skiing or rugby fans here?
Skiing yes, egg-chasing, no. I'm into alpine skiing and ski-jumping, don't really pay much attention to biathlon and x-country.
-
Likewise, don't know too much about biathlon or x-country, but do enjoy following, watching (and doing) all forms of ski racing - be it downhill, super g, gs, or slalom. Unfortunately, as I don't have sky, the opportunity to watch it is fairly limited :(
-
Any skiing or rugby fans here?
Would not say i am a fan but watch biathlon etc on eurosport just because i am fascinated by how hardcore it looks
it hurts my legs watching it.
also a rugby fan, Union i assume. waiting for the super 15 to kick off. in fact just waiting for the 'footy' season in general to kick off here (AFL, Union and league)
-
Just watched the GWS Giants in their two NAB cup games tonight pushing the Bulldogs and Magpies close.
-
Suns did the same thing (even won match) last year. Not holding much stock on NAB performances.
-
Suns did the same thing (even won match) last year. Not holding much stock on NAB performances.
OK did not see much of NAB cup last year, just saw Suns at start of full season where they were woeful. GWS looked a better team than i remember the suns looking then, but you are right will not mean anything when the season proper starts
-
Yeah half these youngsters wont even get a game and looking at their list - Scully/Ward is no Ablett and even then the Suns had Bock and Rischitelli who weren't hacks throughout the season so without any of those types of players I think GWS are in for a longer season than GCS were. That said, their game(s?) should be a good one. The "Newbie" Rivalry. :D
-
Derek Chisora fights Vitali Klitchko tonight.. so another lamb to the slaughter but this time a British journeyman and not an American clubfighter. Probably find some choppy useless stream for that one.
I'm hoping Vitali beats that guy up for 11 rounds and then knock him out in the 12'th. :)
-
Serious question- why is Chisora even fighting Klitchko? He has lost two of his last three matches. Why are these Brit heavyweight contenders such twunts? The his slap has raked in a few more million for the match though.
-
David Haye could fight at times but Chisora is pretty useless, dunno why he's fighting Vitali maybe the German audience love to see their Ukrainian guy beat up a no hoper. . Tyson Fury easily beat Chisora a few weeks ago and he's nowhere near the level of the Klitchko brothers so I'm kind of baffled why this guy is fighting for a world title.
Missmatches are part of boxing but for a title fight? Its a bit of a joke really.
-
Far cry from Lennox Lewis. Hopefully the next one is better.
-
Far cry from Lennox Lewis. Hopefully the next one is better.
It might be a long wait before another Lennox. Tyson Fury is an up and coming, talented fighter and has the size.. but definatley needs to work on toughening himself up a bit and adding some more power and a few other things like a jab etc.
-
Cheers Sub.
I see that he's still very young. Got quite a few years ahead of him.
-
Chisora gave a good account of himself during the fight.
-
Sublimit, how good is eubank junior?
-
Sublimit, how good is eubank junior?
I've only seen him once briefly so its hard to say, he looks a competent orthodox style fighter and possibly a decent prospect.
I kind of like the idea of Haye fighting Chisora but this time in the ring, and hopefully kicking his ass as chisora is a disgrace to boxing with his childish behavior.
-

I heard the Suns team song yesterday .... OMG it is terrible. Worse than the Dockers!!!
Them not winning is a good thing for us all

Yea,he was but he gave klitschko one hell of a fight imo.
-
Match was commented by Željko Mavrović 3x times European champ dude who fought for world title against Lewis, (his last match, cos Lewis killed his liver virtually and true) he said that Chisora surprises him but it is long, long way to see one real black fighter, everyone goes to NFL.
-
College Basketball. Specifically, UNC Tarheel basketball. Second only to Roubaix.
-
If anyone want to take a nap, suggest watching Vladimir Klitchko vs some sorry ass dude right now.
Maybe I would be wrong :o
edit: Nope I will not 2nd round French dude kissing floor
-
4th round it is over ;D not a single punch from that dude.
I wonder who payed tickets :P, and boxing is going down more and more!
Tyson come back!!!!
-
Jakov Fak won world biathlon 20km gold, it would mean nothing to me but this traitor took Slovenian citizenship last year, traitor.
P.S. Yes Fak pronounce same as fu.. :D
But we have another hero and no he will not took anyone citizenship ;), Kostelić is coming back in world alpine ski cup after knee surgery on Maribor race at this weekend. He was lead dude but while he was recovering Swiss dude Feuz Beat 1250pt took lead and Austrian dude Hirscher Marcel took 2nd, Kostelić is 3rd with 1043pts, 6 more races to go.
Of course beautiful Lindsey would win woman world cup, congrats Lindsey ::)
-
Less than a month till opening day of MLB , c'mon you Padres show something this year
-
Scoring runs will be a problem for them, PETCO is huge after all. They'll need Blanks to become the player all the projections had him at before he came up to the majors and I think they'll miss Latos, I know they got Volquez and a few others in return, but if you look at Latos and Volquez's careers to date, Latos is the better pitcher at present, although I can't find the FIP stat for either, but I will track it down.
Latos 429.2 IP 7.6H/9, 2.8BB/9, 8.7SO/9 and a 1.154 WHIP
whereas Volquez has 497.0 IP 8.8H/9, 4.8BB/9, 8.7SO/9 and a 1.497 WHIP
I am not expecting much at all , anything above last in the division will be a winning season for me ;D. I am really interested to see how Latos goes in GAB , going to be a lot tougher for him pitching in that park even though his home and road splits are pretty good.
I also have a soft spot for Toronto and I honestly thought this would be the year they would try and make a big move to catch up to NY,Boston and Tampa but I was left disappointed in their off season.
-
There are a few teams that are intriguing me this year , I think the Nats are going to improve big time possible Miami aswell , The NL east is getting tougher and tougher. Also will Pujols and Wilson push the Angels back into contention against the Rangers and the NL Central is just a toss up , Brewers lost Fielder , Cardinals lost Pujols, Reds gained Latos.
It is going to be a interesting year for sure
-
I am disappointed that the extra round of play-offs is only a one game, Should have at least made it best of three , The scheduling going to be interesting in 2013 as well when the Astro's move over to AL West , I don't like the thought of inter league play all season
-
Sweet!!

I've always liked it, don't really watch it though. When they fall, they fall, there's no faking that.
-
Mlb starts tonight , The A's and Mariners in Japan . Bring it on
-
Yeap the best division kicks it off, but the 2 weakest teams!
Yep, the A's get talked up every year with their young pitching but alway's fail to deliver, their hitting is almost as bad as my Padres
-
The A's are always trading away players for prospects , the rebuilding never stops with them , they may as well be a triple A team. It appears Quentin is out for the first 4-6 weeks for the Pads so there goes most of our power threat
-
I agree but expert's have been saying Quentin's hitting actually projects well in Petco. BB is strange , always rebuilding but then traded for Holliday out of the blue.
I hate spring training , just gives false hope teams are going to go better than what they will. I am still disappointed Toronto didn't explore more avenue's to get an out and out ace, cause they are getting so close to being contenders.
-
How are the Pirates looking this year? Didn't they improve from sh*t to crap last year? :D
-
The good old Pirates, at least they are moving forward though, in a much better position now than for the past 20 years, McCutchen is a stud. My favourite ballpark in the majors as well.
-
They were my random Pick-A-Team a few years ago. :D
-
The A's vs the Mariners was never going to be a hit fest , Was hoping for the A's to sweep the first 2 games. The had lots of opportunities last night just could not get the job done with King Felix on the mound.
I am torn tonight , not sue whether to watch the baseball and tape the AFL or watch the AFL and tape the baseball. It's all too hard
-
Bulltwang in the second half from the Waratahs, Chiefs were clearly superior after HT.
-
Henson gone, again. Sacked from the Blues. What a sh*tty waste of a career.
-
On the positive side, at least he was sacked doing what he pretty much did best throughout his career, throw ice cubes at other passengers. 6 month ban from flybe ;D
-
one good moment from the tahs.

-
Definitely, competent at so many positions, but he's shown squat since he left the Ospreys apart from his off field antics. He seriously lost the plot once he became a trophy husband for Charlotte Church. The worst case was the dating show, the Bachelor, had to be the nadir for him.
The two would be benchmarks now, you could've done a Bilbo, but you did a Henson.
-
Monster contract handed out by the Cincinnati Reds to Joey Votto, It's for 10 years with full trade protection(and also covers the final 2 years of his present contract 2012-13) and is worth $225 million over that time. The Reds are going to regret that in several years time, as they're not a big market team and this will seriously hinder them when it comes to re-signing other players/future free agents. The only way this deal can work is if they win a couple of World Series, within the next few years, otherwise they'll be stuck with an overpaid 1B(which is on the defensive spectrum is the 2nd easiest position to play)who's power and production has declined and with no way of moving him.
Reds? i follow a bit of whats happening at the the place where they have the monster.
-
That's the Boston Red Sox, and their ballpark Fenway has a huge green wall that's called the monster.
I know that..what i meant to say was ... "you follow cincinnati reds? i follow the red sox a bit" .... it came out wrong, i was being a wise ass :D ... hell i even think tessie is a great song :P
-
No I follow my home town team. But there are a few other baseball fans on these boards, which is cool.
What team is that?
-
Well opening day is here , Taping the Marlins and Cardinals on my Foxtel IQ to watch when I get home from the gym.
Good to see my Padres on TV tomorrow morning at home to the Dodgers as well.
It's getting close to play-off time in the NHL as well , hopefully the Sharks can squeeze into the play-off's and make run at the Cup.
I also hope anyone but Tiger wins the masters
-
I am already going insane watching the Padres and it's only game one of 162. Crucial errors and unable to get any offense going. Same old Same old I know . To make it worse though Volquez walks four in one innings including 2 runs.
It's going to be a long year again me thinks.
Hopefully the Sharks can get a win today in the NHL and clinch a playoff spot.
-
I am lucky they are not shown on TV much , It's always the Phils, Red Sox , Yanks or Dodgers which in itself is painful as I dont like any of those teams.
-
Nearly everyday , excluding Friday and Sunday normally. I get it on ESPN and Fox Sports on my pay tv package.
-
Yeah I am planning to get up at 9am Sydney time to watch the Diamondbacks game tomorrow , If the Padres cant win the west I hope the D Backs go back to back.
The Blue Jays and Indians game today was a long one with the Blue Jays sneaking a win in the 16th inning
-
Nah I have not . I just got the MLB Show game for my PS3 though, Kemp just clubbed a 2 run homer ,Dodgers up 5-1 now. Not happy
-
I have heard of it but get frustrated to easy to get into those sort of games. I am not into Fantasy sports that much either. I only have 1 fantasy team for the NRL (Rugby League) but don't take it at all seriously.
-
2 run blast by Maybin , 5-3 now bottom of the 8th. C'mon Friars , Rally time
-
Who is pitching opening day for the Angels , is it Weaver and it's at home to the Royals isn't it
-
The Royals don't have enough pitching yet I believe . they have lots of run scoring potential though. I am interested to see how Sanchez pitches for them this year.
-
I think the wild cards will go to whoever finishes second in the AL West and whoever finishes second in the East.
-
I just think that with how tough the AL East is will make it hard for the third team to get more wins than either the Rangers or Angels.
Last year I would have definitely thought both would come out of the AL East but the Angels have improved too much for it to happen this year IMO.
I honestly have no Idea who will get the Wildcard in the NL but I am going to say the Rockies and either Nats or Braves
-
Yeah the Central and West are tough because they are pretty weak divisions , I will tip the Reds for the Central and D'Backs for the West as division winners
-
Isn't Carp already out for a while ,
-
Yeah Carpenter is who I meant . I think his injury status is indefinite , They are unsure when he will be back.
One game down 161 to go.
-
The Padres would be good lol. I think he will end up with the Red Sox
-
I though I read he was holding off for a while anyway. Anyway I gotta go get ready for work. I hope all goes well for your Angels tomorrow. Catch Ya Later
-
worst NRL kicks ever!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9EDiEa6kD8#)
-
Swans won, England winning in cricket, stormers ahead in the rugby and Roosters take the lead against Titans. Now if saints can beat the scum tonight i will start to believe that EBH can shock everyone and win Roubaix
-
Do you mean St Kilda or St George
-
Do you mean St Kilda or St George
Neither. Southampton Saints. playing home to Portsmouth (scum) tonight

Copy

Padres were shut out and go to 0-2 , Looks like Haren had a rough outing for the Angels today

White Sox pitcher Phil Humber throws a perfect game against the Mariners
-
Tahs beating the Rebels 30-21 and failing to win the bonus point. Gerrard's kicking was one of the few bright spots for the Rebels. No, not Steven Gerrard.
-
Damn Flyers lost two in a row. Still up 3-2 though. Providing Malkin's elbow doesn't influence this game, hoping for a series wrap tonight.
-
Kudos to Gravel and BYOP for predicting the improvement in the Nats. 8)
What a day yesterday - the perfect game, the damn Yankees slaughter of the Sox after being 9-0 down, and the Nats winning yet another in overtime, and another by a single run. The Nats defense is looking solid so the prediction of a .500+ season could actually happen. And the O's still top too. :D
Guys, is there enough interest for a dedicated MBL topic? It looks to me like there is.

THe Blues really are sh*te, Nonu, Weepu and not much else. One win in 9, poor.
Johnny Wilkinson had a top day for Toulon, 7 pens and a couple of drop goals.

Richard Graham from the Force to the Reds, Genia the other way. Western force got their balls ripped off there.

Heineken Cup final on May 19 at Twickenham will be between Leinster (for the third time in four years) and Ulster. Ulster beat Edinburgh in their semi 22-19, and Leinster beat Clermont 19-15. Clermont had a try ruled out in the final couple of minutes.
-
I don't normally agree with much of what he writes, but this is, for me, one of his better articles. In a nutshell, Cornish Pirates are going to be denied entrance into the rugby Premiership because they don't have a 'suitable' ground, essentially ring-fencing the Premiership, preserving teams like Newcastle who have been circling the drain for years, and removing any incentive for teams in the Championship.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/club/9269408/Disgrace-if-Cornwall-denied-a-Premiership-standard-stadium-and-Pirates-miss-out-on-promotion-because-of-it.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/club/9269408/Disgrace-if-Cornwall-denied-a-Premiership-standard-stadium-and-Pirates-miss-out-on-promotion-because-of-it.html)
-
Crying shame that. Facilities, of all things, possibly putting paid to Cornwall's chances. Pays to be a Rugger club in New Zealand, damn good facilities and support there.
-
Anyone watch the first round of the US open golf? Looks brutally difficult - only 6 players in the entire field shot under par for their first round. :o
Large number of big names - Donald, McIllroy, Westwood, Mickelson, Bubba etc. - all at 6+ or worse. Conversely, Tiger looking ominously good ( :( ) but hopefully Justin Rose can maintain a good challenge into the weekend...
-
Aye, watched most of it, and also regretting the lack of sleep today.
It's one for the media and stats is the course. It's a 7100 yard course and it's defo not a par 70, just been done so to milk every drop of hype around.
McIlroy desperately needs to improve his course management skills, step back and listen to his caddie or look to be alongside Darren Clarke as much as possible. Darren's a massive positive for youngsters as he's always around for help and Rory needs to sit down and learn.
Donald, he was just terrible yesterday. Didn't hit the fairway enough and with his lack of length it's not at all a wonder that he struggled.
The stimpmeter reading was around, if not more than, 13 yesterday, pretty quick that, and the soft iron players had an okay time- Francesco Molinari and Branden Grace to name two.
Westwood's at 3 over, so nowhere near out of the tournament yet.
I think that the players who started at the back nine were defo more fortunate than the ones who started on the front nine, especially for imploding likes like those of McIlroy.
As for Woods, I'm not convinced by his ability to string out four good rounds to win a major yet. He's definitely getting better and he had a monster putt yesterday.
It's a course for a fit and in form Dustin Johnson like player, shame he's not in peak fitness nowadays.
-
Flip, what time is this on (in CET or ET please, whichever is easiest :D)?
-
Finishes at around 9:30-10am WA.
-
Donald cut, McIlroy cut, Bubba cut, Louis cut
Also gone Jimenez :'( Cink, Dustin Johnson, Immelman, Baddeley, Ogilvy, Quiros, Laird, Glover, Haas, Rock, F'dez Castano. Too many to name really.
What a fantastic round by Colsaerts though, could he win it? He has the talent to, just been a case of cocking up that talent for half a decade before his breakout win.
-
I'm struggling to see any of this. It's either the Euros or the golf.
-
US open finishes well in the morning. I don't see all of the round myself, just the first 3 hours and last hour or hour and a half.
Anyway, the commentators need to shut their gob about the hardest course ever. I don't need to hear hardest in every second sentence.
-
T1 G. McDowell -1
T1 J. Furyk -1
3 F. Jacobson +1
T4 L. Westwood +2
T4 E. Els +2
T4 B. Adams +2
T4 N. Colsaerts +2
T8 W. Simpson +3
T8 K. Chappell +3
T8 J. Senden +3
T8 B. Hossler E +3
T8 J. Dufner E +3
T8 J. Peterson +3
T14 R. Goosen +4
T14 M. Kaymer +4
T14 M. Kuchar +4
T14 T. Woods +4
Then a big group on +5. Looking good for Westwood and McDowell, but the way the course has been playing (or people playing it) it's clearly very easy to drop a large number of shots very quickly. It will come down to whoever can hold their nerve, and sink their putts.
It seems rather odd to me however, that going into the final round of a major, that there should be only 2 players under par - yes the majors should be difficult but this is the sort of scorecard you normally associate with the Open where you get four rounds of torrential rain and driving wind. It's like they looked at McIllroy annihilate the field last year and have gone completely the other way - make the course so difficult that the world number 1 (even though he didn't play great) shoots +7 for his first round. Bit too extreme for me
-
Last year's was a weird US Open, and the best way to describe it would be that it was an Open championship course played in US Open conditions. Not long enough, not demanding enough and a good player was in form.
The course itself is usually a par 71, and it's got two or three monster holes, but the havoc has been caused by how fast the greens have been. Between 13 and 14 on the stimpmeter is fast, very fast and requires skill to be on the green. A lot of good shots have just flown through the greens and ended in the fringe or the rough.
As for the course, my only gripe is it is changed for stats and hype sake, but as long as it's the same for all the players, as it is now with everyone opening at 1, I have no issue with it. Donald scores an 79? Even I've done better :D
Of the names in that lot there, there's no doubt who I like more, McDowell, Lee, Els, COlsaerts and Kaymer.
Also, Senden's name in that list is not just out of the blue, it's astonishing the GIRs the guy has.
Should be a brilliant finale to the tournament.
-
So, Webb Simpson it is. Well played that man, as deserving a winner as has been in recent major championships.
Furyk just swung like a rusty gate towards the end and McDowell hit as many fairways as I would usually, and I'm sh*te at best.

Will the Aussies better it?

Erm Black Caviar? Not racing against each other this week AFAIK.
And Frankel won by eleven lengths
-
That was a good win, oh and go Ortensia!
-
Will the Aussies better it?
21 wins for BC, passed 11 ages ago :P
First race in UK is a Little Bridge too far for Ortensia it seems.

Brilliant for Kieran Fallon, top man.
-
So you think beating the Queen's horse, Carlton House at the Prince of Wales Stakes. Charles' wait for the crown may just have extended.
-
Frankel :pray what a win
Frankel is exhilarating, exciting, awe inspiring, and genuinely jaw dropping to watch. Hoping that he steps up in distance towards the end of this season - the way he won the other day, sitting in until half way and then going for it, suggested that an extra two furlongs won't be too much of a problem (in terms of lasting the distance). It will be awesome if/when he does
-
This is funny. Two horses doing the same thing in two "strong" nations for horse racing.
-
Pretty amazing the WBO investigation into the Pacquiao-Bradley fight.
What was it, six or so judges all came up with a unanimous decision for Pac Man? And some by huge margin.
-
New Zealand brilliance against the Oirish. No chance, 60-0
-
I get to watch the race on tv. :win

Luke Nolen nearly cocked up there.

Indeed. Still, the horse is a champion! :win

First time ever that no Australian man has made it into the second round at Wimbledon... Bad times for the Aussies in tennis.
For what seems like the first time in ages, Murray - who was awesome in beating Davydenko - is joined by other Brits (four to be exact) in the second round. Hope that a couple of them can go on into the third round.
-
Nadal out in 5 sets. Lukas Rosol take a bow. Swinging from the hip in real style. :win
-
A great result for Rosol!
Nadal is a pr1ck, did you see the way he barged Rosol at the change over in one of the early sets. So glad he lost wish he would funk off!
And he'll be down to number 3 if Federer is half decent.

To the extent that it is possible for 9.86 to look slow, Bolt looked like he was running through treacle, and his start was absolutely terrible.

And beaten in the 200m too.
Irish open took place in Northern Ireland for the first time in nearly 60 years. Donaldson said that it was one of the finest courses the European tour was hosted in. Successful.

The third great horse in the world at the moment, Camelot, continued his own winning streak by winning the Irish Derby, making him the first horse to win both Derby's and the 2000 Guineas in a season since Nijinsky in 1970. Now lining up for the St Leger, and bidding therefore to become the first horse since Nijinsky to claim the Triple Crown of Classic races. Unfortunately, this means that we are unlikely to see Camelot go up against Frankel anytime in the near future :(

Interesting documentary on the BBC about Rallying in the 80's when it was big business, and how it all got a bit out of hand. From the same producers who did a fascinating documentary on Formula 1's 'killer years' - will only be available to view for 1 week

Nice one dancing. I'd have loved to have seen them Lancia's in action, despite all their practicality for real customers ;D
Webb Simpson having a grouse season, to follow up last year. Good man, a Major and looking good for another win tonight.

Mixed weekend for my favorite team (Atlanta Braves)
Bourn got added to allstar team, which makes 4 Braves on the team.
And we swept the Phillies
BUT...our super future world beater shortstop Simmons fractured his hand today. :( :'(
Still, Go Braves!!

Robertson, Bingham and Selby all have been knocked out of the Aussie open in Round 1, the top seeds are falling but that generally makes for a more exciting competition later on.

Very impressive by Molinari, lets hope he ups his game enough to get back into Ryder cup selection along with his brother.
-
Watched it, and it has been bloody impressive. About his Ryder cup, book it, because he's qualifying by his placing in the world rankings.
As for the others, I'm disappointed that Westy decided not to play a single links tournament before the Open, certainly Portrush or Castle Stuart would've been a good place to be.
About the Ryder cup team itself- Donald, Westwood, Kaymer, McIlroy, McDowell, Francesco, Rose, Lawrie, Colsaerts, Poulter and two others.

America is doomed! :o
As of now, our top eight, and automatic qualifiers are
blah | blah |
---|
Bubba Watson | 5326.395 |
Jason Dufner | 5289.254 |
Tiger Woods | 4669.413 |
Webb Simpson | 4635.500 |
Phil Mickelson | 4107.108 |
Matt Kuchar | 4043.426 |
Hunter Mahan | 3864.370 |
Zach Johnson | 3325.858 |
http://www.rydercup.com/2012/usa/team/team_standings.cfm (http://www.rydercup.com/2012/usa/team/team_standings.cfm)
Of these 8, i'd say the first 7 should qualify easily. Zach Johnson should be in either if he qualifies or as a captain's pick, he plays solid golf. If Zach qualifies, I would pick the next three in the standings right now, Bradley, Fowler, and Dustin Johnson, as well as Stricker, simply because he plays well with Tiger. Although Furyk might work too, for the same reason. Maybe Van Pelt or Haas will make it, but I'd say they're long shots. But of course it doesn't matter, because McDowell will rip us to smithereens, and Donald and Westwood will continue to startle us with their dominance as we wonder how on earth they haven't won a major.
Just pray that Kevin Na doesn't get picked, or the Ryder Cup will never end. ;D
-
Don't worry, holes can be conceded in the Ryder cup :D Na has been good though, certainly far better than that 16.
That's a sh*t strong American team too.
I love DJ, got to be my favourite American player, and just hope he can get back to full fitness after a nightmare run this year.
About Westy, despite being my favourite player outside India, he's not the best match player around. Still, I'd happily be proven wrong. I'd add Quiros to the European team, and am happy to be surprised by the Captain's pick, Manassero please.
Going to be a great Ryder cup, and my favourites are actually the USA, very slightly. I'll be supporting Europe as their tours are at a far more humane time than the PGA tour though and so I know more players ;D

Those players on a good day are as strong as any in the world, you just have to look at Woods when going at full swing and Watson and Simpson both of whom recently won a major. It is a solid team but the problem for you guys is that all your players will have to rise up to the challenge pick time, they have done recently but can they all do consistently for the duration of the cup?
-
They will. The singles are definitely in the US favour. Mahan won a WGC matchplay. Simpson has been winning and top 10ing for fun in these past two years. kuchar is all about consistency and Tiger could go batsh*t at any time like in the previous Ryder cup's singles match against Francesco. It's well good enough to win, they should be the favourites this time, and all this discounting atmosphere. 4 years ago was a bit of a disgrace fans wise, but raucous enough to shake Westwood.
-
Haye gives Chisora the dose of reality he so desperately needed let us beg never to see his figure mar the sport ever again.
Though I didnt watch the fight it seems like Haye was slightly the better of the two and now he wants to have a go at losing to Klitchko once again, he does have Chisora to thank though as otherwise he would have been safely retired by now with no hope whatsoever of a world title bash again one of the two.

Carn Jeev. Brilliant round

flip yeah Jeev flipping beauty. Get in there, Scottish Open Champion.

Congratulations.
Molinari must be kicking himself really hard though.
-
Yeah, but Jeev played a belter of an outward nine. Proper gent, he deserves it, and his third play off shot was well better.
-
Well seems like Jorge may be slowly running away with it, shame Rossi didnt win it would have made a great fairy tail win which would help to truly honour a great legend but this race may have been very title defining though Pedrosa is still in with a chance, though I dont think Stoner has much of a chance.

Some interesting pairing there, even though I fancy the Rory pairing to really shine.
Desperately stupid to keep all the big names together in the first couple of rounds, borne out of NBC's featured pairing nonsense. It's also the lazy journalism that one can expect when covering the sport (and beeb covering it), there are a few outside Woods, Westwood, Donald and major winners.
Of the Challenge tour players, I definitely will be keeping an eye on Rafa Echenique jr, was astonished that he lost his tour card a couple of years ago.
The way the summer, or so called, has gone, it will take some good course management to get around in one piece considering the smashing winds that should affect a links tournament, not to mention the extremely soggy course, and that's not exactly what has been McIlroy's strength. I think he'll struggle here. Not too convinced by his links record, it's well different to a normal course. Needs a lot more thought and is not as algorithmic as other courses.
Asian tour lot, well of course Jeev and Thongchai are legends of the tour, but another great is taking part in the Open, Prayad Marksaeng. Hope all three have a good run. Jeev has said that a major is his career goal now.
Here's another quality trio

Jack in the box pick? Pablo Larrazabal. Would've said Paul Lawrie, but he's won an Open and is in form

Could go here or in the Olympic thread. Very good documentary on Bolt - lots of behind the scenes and quite unguarded stuff.

The Open is up and running, Lawrie, Scott, and Tiger the current leaders on -2. Weather looks ok atm, no rain, and not too much of a breeze either.
-
Lawrie a flipping ace links player and he's on form. Wouldn't be the worst bet to win. Jeev got an even 70 and Thongchai scored a 69 :win
Kaymer and Robert Rock are out for sure. Echenique and Westy at 3 over.
Didn't realise Mardan Mamat was playing here.
-
Thank flip Rory didn't sh*t on my prediction. Not too windy or rainy for the next two days.
Whoops, should be windy tomorrow afternoon and evening. Noice.

Wowzers, missed that. Tis Geo restricted, but there's a handycam video on ewetube. Good for him. I still don't know how the fark he qualified for the Open. Not disgracing himself there either.
Nice to see McDowell back in contention nowadays, 2011 was just not his year.
-
Really feel bad for Adam Scott. No one deserves to go through that.
Happy for Ernie as he has been returning to his old form for the last few years, but this Open will be remembered more for Scott's collapse.
-
Just got the channel that be broadcasting the final of the Super 15. Considering it's only the NZ commentary I listen to usually, I be cheering for the Chiefs.
Also because of Liam Messam's flipping fantastic performance for New Zealand in their last match and of course, Taumalolo.
-
And odds are that I'll miss it :fp
-
I didn't, and it was a walk for the Chiefs. Cruden and Messem were just brilliant.
-
Guess I was the only one who watched the USPGA. Rory won, and Scott had another stinker of a fourth round. Petterson had a 2 stroke penalty which cost him around half a mill dollars because his club struck a leaf in the backswing.
Good tournament by Rory, but he's still showing that he's a fair weather player who struggles in anything but the ideal conditions. Tiger had 22 putts in the opening round, bloody brilliant that. He's setting himself up for 2013 pretty well. Ryder cup coming up in a couple of months at Medinah, but the run of tournaments in the European tour are always proper fun with players desperately looking to keep their card.
Wiesberger's had a superlative season this year, 2 wins in the European tour.
-
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
I always despised Melky even when he was a Brave, and seeing him be successful for the freakin' Giants this year made me sick. Happy now though!

Says the fella who watches males in lycra and sponsors on their arses oscillating their legs for hours on end. No, that's not a porn film.
-
not like any porn i watch :)
i just think an activity where the only time they break into a sweat is when they try to get to the h'orderves tray before John Daley, should not be classified as a sport
-
If it were as easy as that, anyone could be a two time major winner like Daly. It takes hours, and days to even hit the ball a minute 30 yards in the direction you want it. It's well a sport, and it's well worth the effort. Walking around for 6km and whacking the ball 200 yards while putting unnatural stresses on the knee and back, it's not nearly as easy as the pros make it look. That's like saying I can climb like Schleck on fire because I'm skinny.
-
you see to me the fact that it is hard does not make it a sport. chess is hard to do well, should that be a sport?
baiting ram on the otherhand is very easy and yet i a considering starting that as a sport
-
Chess, which I'm rubbish at, and slagging off dinzy are sports, btw.
Again walking 6km on a course, and twisting your knee as much as them while swinging the arms, and then comment on the lack of fitness. Yes, they're not anorexic like cyclists, and they don't give up any ounce of good food, but to say they don't have targeted exercise to improve fitness in the lower back and front knee, where all the weight is concentrated, not to mention the shoulders, is rubbish.
Had a similar discussion a few months ago with a person who said cycling was glorified exercise. All easier said than done.
-
twisting knee and swinging arms? next you will be claiming my dad dancing in a nightclub counts as sport
surely 'Glorified exercise' is all any sport is. in fact that should be the definition of sport
-
next you will be making up sports where, instead of hitting the stationary ball with a club they get someone to throw the ball at them. maybe involve some more people that can try and catch the ball.
-

There are other people who read, you know. If I suggest torsion about the stationary ankle is more at the knee than the shin then the history undergrads won't understand ;)
All easier said than done, if golf is dancing in the club, then cycling is avoiding diarrhoea.

It was a great final, stayed up till 3 am to watch it. When Djokovic won those two sets after each other I thought Murray surely would lose and then he breaks him in the first game.
Congratulations you Scots & Englishmen. ;)
-
Definitely shows that Andy is a different man, I dont know or care whether it was Lendl or his mum but his improved mental state has been pretty fantastic, as a fan, to watch and the way in which he battled in the match last night was truly unbelievable.
Good news for him is that it can only get better seemingly and hopefully this will be his breakthrough into what was an incredibly strong GT stranglehold held by Nadal, Fed and Djoko.

Aye, it'll take a shed load of time though.

New Zealand a joy to watch even if I am feeling rather sympathetic for the Welsh.
They are outclassing the Welsh in every department, but their offensive play within the 22 is unbelievable..
Will be fun to watch England playing them next week :D
-
Cricket finished for the day, now watching the Cross Country sking, they dont half motor on.
-
Wales made a comeback sort of, but 33-10 does not do justice to the NZ superiority. Though it does do justice to Wales's rugged determination.
England meanwhile are in a spot of bother over their captaincy after Robshaw has errer thrice in two weeks with his decisions over penalties and a lot of talk saying there are better flankers out there.
On the topic of skiing good to see Chemmy Alcott making her return, tbh always has been a lot of fuss about a skier who has never really placed all that high, but I felt extremely bad for her after her fall and especially considering all her battles with funding.

Lithuanian Zydrunas Savickas aka Big Z wins his 3rd world strongest man title by being crowned 2012 champion in Universal Studios California Adding to his victory in Valleta Malta 2009 and his Sun City RSA 2010 title awarded on a technicality (after he finished level), Savickas is now 4th on all time list.
Pre competition favorite and defending champion Brian Shaw suffered nerve issues in his hand and could only finish 4th. As a result Savickas's compatriot Vitautas Lalas - the smallest man in the competition, proved his closest competitor leading until the last event. At 205cm 3rd place Haefor Bjornson of Iceland, was 27 cm taller than Lalas

I suppose he has no connection (other than the name) to this Zydrunas Savickas (http://cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/rider_palm.asp?riderid=13700&year=0&all=1¤t=0)?

Brady and Belicheck's record is unbelievable! Credit where credit's due, they always deliver when it matters. We get proper highlights here in the UK tonight, so looking forward to catching up on those - an unbelievable series of matches!
So Ravens vs Pats for the AFC, 49ers vs Falcons for the NFC... who's your money on?
BYOP, can you explain to me, as an enthusiastic but fairly ignorant NFL fan, the diferences between the two conferences/divisions. Is it just so there wouldn't be far too many teams in one big league? Is there any real difference in standard? Does one have a better reputation than the other?

Well done Heather Watson, a remarkable comeback against Pervak at the Aus open to win 4-6, 7-6(9-7), 6-2.
The crowd loved her to "Heather Watsons Barmy Army".

So the pats lost?! Dang! All in on ray l and his men now condsidering its his last season and he aint a bad man.
-
49ers all the way! Gotta keep that 100% superbowl record alive.
Can't believe how it's panned out this year. Two really good AFC teams in Denver and NE and who do the 49ers get in the final? The Ravens.
I never liked the 49ers, mainly due to their ability to avoid the big names in the SuperBowl, they got the Bengals twice! I know I'm being incredibly unfair, the 49ers were exceptional in the eighties, and you can only beat what's in front of you, it just always seemed to me that they got an easy ride. They were in a really crap division too, almost guaranteeing themselves play off games every year.
bah.

I'll defer to BYOP for the answer except to say that when I followed the sport from afar, in the previous millenium, the NFC East Division was widely recognised to be the toughest and whichever of the Cowboys, Giants or Redskins made it through relatively unscarred would be a serious contender.

Damn it, why is the Superbowl on a Sunday night? Hugely inconvenient for those of us who have to go to work on Monday morning! That said, at least I won't have to watch Beyonce lip-syncing ;)

Chapeau to Esther Vergeer - retiring after being unbeaten for a decade, 470 matches in total. I was lucky enough to see her win gold at the Paralympics in the summer, and she was phenomenal (not that I know too much about wheelchair tennis) but some of the shots she played were as jaw-dropping as those you see from the top able-bodied players. Hope she enjoys her retirement.
Incidentally, I remember the Dutch ladies did a clean sweep of the podium in the women's wheelchair tennis - pretty cool achievement!

In the absence of ram this place needs some golf discussion as the Masters come to an end.
A lot of talk about Woods and Rory whilst some guys like Jason Day have been going around very nicely. I would fancy Kuchar, Cabrera or Scott to challenge along with Day and of course Woods not out of it yet albeit a bit behind.
Unfortunately the European challenge kind of died today with Rory going out with quite a disastrous round. Rose so far with a +2 and Westwood and Garcia haven't been able to make much headway. Westwood currently best placed at -2.

So Adam Scott wins the golf, does this mean a public holiday in Ozzieland :rolleye :rolleye

Not to be outdone by cricket, here's the IPTL!
@FirstpostSports: Djokovic calls Bhupathi’s IPTL a revolutionary idea http://t.co/FvqvLB9nnO
Djokovic calls Bhupathi's...tournament a "revolutionary idea", Nadal says "it will be a big success for sure", while Williams described it as "like a dream come true"...The only notable absentees, for now, are Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer, but don't be fooled into thinking the Swiss is not behind the idea - he is.
Whether or not the league, that will take place in six as yet unspecified cities across Asia and will feature players drafted into teams to compete in one-set shootout tennis, soars into orbit or falls flat remains to be seen.
Bhupathi, however, is adamant about one thing - it will be a serious competition and not a glorified exhibition.

Haven't seen any of the boxing at the olympics this year but the roundups I've heard of it on the radio have suggested the Judging has been bad.
Have there been any decisions as blatant as the Roy Jones one from Seoul?

Got to be honest and say no nothing as blatant as the Roy Jones vs Park Si- Hun verdict but that will hopefully remain unique. At lea,st Si- Hun was man enough to raise Jones hand and say " hê knows who won" on the podium. These two Russians just celebrated when given the verdict, they just know they won on dodgy decisions, lets hope it van be proved at sometime.
And yes I did have to look up who Jones was fighting in Seoul

Any of you Danish VRers in or around Aarhus? Going to the World Cross Country at the weekend? If you do, could you give a shout out on my behalf to my nephew Darragh, running in an Ireland vest and hopefully holding his own among those who are neither East African nor Ingebrigtsen in the U20 race. Tell him Uncle Kevin sent you.

Sumo has had it's first corona victim. Not a high ranking rikishi, but maybe it's even sadder because of that.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nVMlYAEfOU
In the world of sumo this weekend we saw the retirement of Kotoshogiku. I only restarted watching sumo a year and a half ago or so, but he was one of my favourites in that time, even if he was on a downward slope.
The above video is his real moment of glory from back in 2016. The context is explained before the action starts, but to briefly sum up, no Japanese rikishi had won a basho for ten years (there are six every year) and for their national sport that's pretty embarrassing. The Mongolians were the dominating force, but even an Estonian and a Bulgarian had picked up titles in that time.
It brings a lump to the throat watching his Mum and Dad in the crowd.

Two Belgian Gold Medals in one day ! Three Gold Medals overall. That's something I don't think has ever happened since I'm on the planet. :o
Still, I have to admit, Netherlands who are just twice as large as Belgium in terms of population have always had a lot more titles in the Summer Olympics (not to mention the loads of titles in speed skating at the Winter Olympics).
Nafissatou Thiam has been the first Belgian athlete to win back to back gold medals at two Olympics since over a century. The first and last one to do it was the archer Hubert Van Innis (1866-1961) in Paris 1900 (won two gold medals) and in Antwerp 1920 (won four gold medals) (archery was no longer an Olympic sport between the two).

Nafi is from Rhisnes, a small town North of Namur (town I was raised in). In Rio, it struck me that she had the same nutritionist as Greg Van Avermaet and Jolien Dhoore who also respectively Olympic champion and Bronze medalist, Stephanie Scheirlynck.
http://velorooms.com/index.php?topic=7505.msg2218403#msg2218403
“I could cook three meals: Bolognese spaghetti, steak with French Fries & sausages with mash potatoes”, said Nafi Thiam a few weeks before her golden plaque. Until two years ago the heptathlete dedicated no attention to her food. “She ate like a flat student” says Stephanie. “Since our partnership, she got rid of 4 kg. But more importantly, she adapted her food to her training whereby she recovered and performed better.” Not that it is the recipe for gold. “The same holds true for Greg, Nafi and Jolien, they made the performances. I provide the fuel.” Stephanie does not completely advise against anything. “Not even against a pack of fries. Though you shouldn’t do that before the event. With regards to sport food the timing is mostly important: what do you eat when? Oatmeal, brown bread and muesli are the ideal breakfast throughout the year. But brown bread takes two hours longer to digest than a slice of white bread. That’s why Nafi only ate white bread on her competition day and a few light pancakes as breakfast. That did not lay on her stomach.” Ditto with a good beefsteak. Therein you have a lot of proteins, the building blocks for our body. “That’s good after a competition but don’t eat it in-between because such a steak remains in our system for 8 hours. That is simply in the way. There’s only one thing our body doesn’t need: alcohol”
Greg Van Avermaet:
The evening before: pasta, quinoa and rice. A rider such as Greg rapidly consumes 5,000 kilo calories in one race.
Breakfast: oatmeal or muesli with slim milk, yoghurt, rice or soya drink. Bread with jam or honey. Pancakes with maple syrup. Total: +/- 1,000kcal.
During the race: sport drink every hour, energy bars, rice cakes. A rider can at most add half of his consumption (~2,200 kcal) in a race.
Nafi Thiam:
The evening before: pasta, rice & quinoa. On D-day light food is crucial. There are a lot of shock moves, a lot of intensity, so comfort (a light stomach) is very important.
The breakfast: white bread and breakfast cereals. No fibres like oatmeals or whole-wheat , this digests too slowly.
Between the contests: sport drinks, banana’s, energy bars and dry fruits. A main meal is possible before the javelin throw but running with a filled stomach does not work.
Jolien D’Hoore: in the track hall it was warm and dry, so Jolien sweat a lot. She made it up with drinking sport drinks (humidity + salt + energy). For the explosive efforts two elements were crucial: carbohydrates and fast sugar. In-between she had to eat in order to survive the two omnium days. These were meals that were rich in energy and easy to digest: pasta with vegetable sauce and a very little bit of meat.

Probably because it's cheap. Definitely because it ticks a box on the BBC's diversity policy.
How are you enjoying their coverage of the entire Women's 6 Nations btw?
Seeing that in terms of the main men's tournament, they can no longer be bothered beyond the minimum contracted.
(oh and don't get me started on their current coverage of the Tiger Woods show, formally known as The Masters.)
-
Unfortunately I don't pay much attention to any rugby these days. Still keep a vague eye on how Ireland and Ulster get on, but purely from a result viewpoint.
At least the radio coverage from the BBC is still good, no? That's their real sporting crown jewels these days.
