Title: 2016-18 Emerging Riders CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on January 03, 2016, 23:31
The third edition of the game for the more patient CQer starts here.

The rules are as before: 18 riders each of whom, regardless of their age or the level they ride at, have accumulated less than 200 points throughout their career.  I have posted a very long, but by no means exclusive, list of riders who are (I think, probably worth checking) eligible on Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/x0i6o2zjfdr18sn/Emerging%20riders%20eligibility%20list%202016-18.xls?dl=0), but to be honest, it is probably more efficient to choose the youngsters who you think will blossom over the next three years, and check their CQ page to see that the sum of all their career points is at most 199. Don't forget that some riders with no points and no current contract won't have a CQ page.

Scoring is the CQ points they gain from 1/1/16 to 31/12/18, and that is a long enough scoring period that there is no real advantage to be gained in the first month, so teams need to be in by the last moment of January (GMT).

As usual, names in CQ format please, with nothing else on the line.  If the rider has no CQ page, then hope that SURNAME Forename is what CQ will go with (and if he is Portuguese, they won't but I'll track him down eventually).  Submit your entry by PM on either Cycling News or Velorooms: one keen entrant already has.

Good luck, enjoy the challenge and the gentler pace of a three year race, and keep an eye out for monthly updates.

The selected riders list for the Youth CQ Ranking Game (http://velorooms.com/index.php?topic=7688.0) could act as a communal shortlisting for this game

Here is the list of riders selected in that game from which I have removed those ineligible for this effort:

Spoiler (hover to show)

Simply select 18 of these (or any other rider who has a lifetime total of less than 200 CQ points) and watch them soar or fail from now to the end of 2018.

I have a feeling that Wippert's ineligibility is going to be some sort of inside-joke for the next couple of years ... :D

Not sure if this in particular has been done, I recall similar things with different years but seeing as I'm a bit bored on a Saturday afternoon I thought I might as well give it a go.

If you look at the years 2013-2015 and see who would have been available for selection if this game was running at the start of the 2013 season I think this would be this best possible team.

NAT       NAME   2015 2014 2013 TOTAL   Points pre 2013
*fr      COQUARD Bryan      807      542      742      2091      34

Technically if you take the points Mirsamad Pourseyedi has got in the last three years (1348) he should be in there as looking at CQ he had 169 points before 2013 however he had points taken off him in 2011 that would have put him over the limit so rightly or wrongly I decided to exclude him.

I have probably missed somebody off this but hopefully most are correct!

!

I had a go at looking what a game coming to end of the cycle when the game started (ie 2012-2014) can't remember what the * denote though!

If this game had just come to the end of a 3 year cycle (and had started at the same time as the first main game), it would have been possible to score 25730 if you'd had the good fortune to select

Quintana
Kittel
Demare
Bouhanni
Kwiatkowski*
Betancur
Majka
Talansky
Bardet
Kelderman
Vichot
Slagter
Dumoulin
Izagirre
Debusschere
Durbridge*
Dennis
Dowsett*

you could probably have improved on that if you managed to predict the career of any of the following.

Martinez
Coquard
Zoidl
Arrendondo
Nizzolo
Hofland
Chernetskiy
Bongiorno
Herrada
Mezgec
Jungels
Moser
Landa

You raise an issue that I have not really considered in terms of eligibility, and which has not arisen in the two previous edition of the game.  In terms of sanctioned riders, I would want to take an inclusive definition of "gaining" or "accumulating" 200 points, that is, including points subsequently wiped.  I believe this is consistent with the understanding of being for riders who are emerging into the upper echelons of the sport.
This makes team checking rather harder: I would ask participants to not deliberately try to sneak such riders through, and to keep an eye out for ineligible riders in teams when they are published, or even more helpfully, drawing attention in advance to riders who might be under consideration but whose tally including deducted points is 200 or more.

Riders who have had points wiped for doping should have a note on their CQ profile, so it's hard to miss.
It would have to be some sort of "Gentleman's Agreement" as checking each and every submitted rider would be painstakingly tedious; but I think I can speak for all of us when I say that nobody involved in cycling would ever knowingly cheat.

Eh ... well. Nobody involved in watching and analysing cycling, maybe. :lol

Pick some young riders who have scored less than 200 career CQ points so far.

Slip in a couple of ringers.

PM your team to the boss.

Although there are thousands of other riders who are eligible, the list culled from riders picked for the Youth CQ game (reply 3 in this thread) could serve as your long-list, and you simply need 18 of them.  You could use your Youth CQ team (Without Van Der Poel and Eiking) to make up the first 10 names on your list if you wish.

Then wait 3 years to see if you won.

They don't necessarily have to be young - just low-scoring.

Of course, 32-year olds with <200 CQ points so far are very unlikely to be good picks, though.

Damn Damn Damn  :angry  :angry  :angry

I have occasionally had problems with the spreadsheet on these before, whereby some of the cell formulae to transfer numbers from another page retain the formula, but return a blank.  Strangely, I have usually been able to overcome it in the past by adding empty pages and hide them (I'm using Open Office, saving in .XLS format).

But now it won't let me use that workaround, so my hopes to put up the frequency of picks data tonight is thwarted, and my confidence for it returning scores properly is wobbly at best.

Here is the offending spreadsheet in dropbox if anyone can help. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/4n9gx34jdi5y68d/Emerging%20CQ%202016%20to%202018.xls?dl=0)

Hey AC,

I've just had a look and the formula you're using is trying to find info in the wrong column.

You can either change this

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,5,FALSE)),
0,VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,5,FALSE))

to

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,6,FALSE)),
0,VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,6,FALSE))

in every relevant box (which is probably very time consuming). Or you can go to the Popularity table and delete one of the empty columns between the riders' names and their popularity score (H for example). This definitely works as I've just done it but I'm not sure if it might also knock out some of the other formulas.

Hope that helps.

Pretty happy with my team, they've got 89 points already this season (I think) and a fair few look to be involved plenty with their teams this year.

Pretty surprised Hofstede is a unique pick as he will have a similar role this year as Oomen did last year I think. Annoyed myself by not picking Hofstetter as he's already had a decent result in Mallorca and I have him in my two other teams, but think there are plenty of other points scoring opportunities for these guys.

As far as I know I have Mamykin in action at Valenciana this week with Soler and Moscon riding Dubai.

Title: Re: 2016-18 Emerging Riders CQ Game
Post by: LukasCPH on February 02, 2016, 12:21
Team "Emerging LukasCPH"[1] has high hopes for the next three years.[2]

Here's a run-down:
*de #radnet ACKERMANN Pascal (unique pick)
Decent sprinter who will pick up points in .2 races this year. The Qatar Worlds could be something for him, too - and then he'll hopefully get a pro contract and continue to improve.

*sk #tinkoff BASKA Erik
Must-have. *eu champion 2015 and heaps of other results, now added to the *sk contingent at #tinkoff. Should become a good - and high-scoring - pro.

*fr #direct BOUDAT Thomas
Must-have. Young French sprinter, good on road and track; might just become the next Coquard.

*dk #stolting CARBEL SVENDGAARD Michael
Sprinter (= ability to score lots), has 1 year of pro experience already. Will get better every year.

*fr #iam CHEVRIER Clément
Good French climber, has 1 pro year (including a GT, where he placed 12th in the #white classification) under his belt already. Should get into the points from now on.

*ru #gazprom FOLIFOROV Alexander
4th in l'Avenir 2014, one of the best #gazprom riders. Will probably ride the Giro - but also lots of other races (and should score a lot in the Russian races).

*co #etixx GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
Must-have. The Colombian sprinting sensation will score lots and lots of points this year (already has, in fact), and even more in the years to come.

*gb #axeon GEOGHEGAN HART Tao
Must-have. 13th in California & Utah, 7th in Colorado - at 20 years of age. Will ride for #axeon this year, then go pro with #sky. Next British stage race hope.

*no #fdj HOELGAARD Daniel
One of the newest class of young Norwegians, did well in Normandie & Bretagne last year - so it makes sense that a French team picked him up. Seems the French races suit him, and the Coupe de France offers lots of races to score.

*de #stolting KÄMNA Lennard
2014 junior ITT world champ, 3rd in the U23 ITT Worlds this year - the next German ITT legend in the making. And he can climb, too (11th in Valle d'Aosta). All that while finishing school. This year he'll become a full-time pro, and should make his way.

*ru #katusha MAMYKIN Matvey
I first noticed him when he pulled the break on the last stage of the 2015 Sibiu Tour like a big Russian locomotive. And that after placing 15th on Bâlea Lac the day before! Later he DNFed Valle d'Aosta on the last stage while being 5th overall, and reached the l'Avenir podium. At #katusha this locomotive will eventually steamroll Zakarin. ;)

*fr #wanty MARTIN Guillaume
Won LBL U23, 4th in Isard, 12th in l'Ain with the *fr national team, finally a stage win and 10th overall in l'Avenir - someone for mountainous stage races as well as hard one-dayers.

*co #southeast MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe
Must-have. A low-key introduction to his first senior year (a.o. 29th in Langkawi), followed by #kom jersey in the Route du Sud and finally his breakthrough with 8th overall & #white jersey in Utah. Finally 13th in l'Avenir. One of the few #colombia riders who got a European contract, he should get good climbing opportunities at #southeast.

*ie #cannondale MULLEN Ryan
Must-have. Already double *ie ITT champion, U23 ITT Worlds silver medalist, 3rd in the Rás ... Will get higer-level competition in the pro ranks, but should pick up enough ITT points while figuring out what kind of rider he'll be.

*dk #stolting PEDERSEN Mads
Double winner of Trofeo Karlsberg, accompanied by one each of Course de la Paix, Sint-Martinusprijs, Tour of Istria and Paris-Roubaix ... and that's only his junior years. Won Frankfurt U23 in his first senior year, took a couple of Nations Cup stages this year, 8th in the Tour des Fjords, and is a decent timetrialler. Also knows how to party![3]

*ee #academy RÄIM Mihkel
Some good results in past years, especially for someone without a Conti team who mostly raced with the *ee national squad. Took his search for a team to Social Media - and got on the #academy squad. A bit of a 'heart pick' - but one that may well pay off.

*no #cannondale SKJERPING Kristoffer
2nd in the U23 Ronde, 3rd in the U23 Worlds that his countryman Bystrøm won. Had his 1st pro year in 2015, so is used to the pro races already.

*be #lotto VERVAEKE Louis
4th in Pays de Savoie & Valle d'Aosta in 2013, then won Isard & Pays de Savoie in 2014 and placed 5th in l'Avenir. Pro since mid-2014, started the Giro last year (but abandoned after two weeks), so has had some pro racing already.
 1. don't mentally picture that!
 2. Of course, I had the same hopes with my 2014-2016 team, and only about half of the riders actually turned into points-scorers
 3. See Danish Bike Awards for evidence. :lol

Hey AC,

I've just had a look and the formula you're using is trying to find info in the wrong column.

You can either change this

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,5,FALSE)),
0,VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,5,FALSE))

to

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,6,FALSE)),
0,VLOOKUP(A9,Popularity!$E$1:$J$65227,6,FALSE))

in every relevant box (which is probably very time consuming). Or you can go to the Popularity table and delete one of the empty columns between the riders' names and their popularity score (H for example). This definitely works as I've just done it but I'm not sure if it might also knock out some of the other formulas.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks: I woke up in the middle of the night realising that the root of the problem was the column I had added just before to the Popularity page so that I could indicate unique picks.  I came down in the morning and deleted the column, and that problem was solved.   I'm still having a different problem though:grrr.

Pretty surprised Hofstede is a unique pick as he will have a similar role this year as Oomen did last year I think.
I'll risk repeating the joke I made at the other place: I was impressed at your discovery of Lennard Hofstede, and only wished you had unearthed a Xeldun Kupar or similar to team up with him.

While Gaviria is rendered almost entirely meaningless in terms of the game, as he is on every team other than Guilhermo Ribeiro's, there are 4 other picks that more than 3/4 of teams have chosen:
Laurens De Plus (missed by Guilherme, Just Some Guy, and LukasCPH);
Lennard Kamna (omitted by Guilherme, 0w1s, Laarsland and Trudgin);
Gianni Moscon (eschewed by (guess who?) Guilherme, 0w1s, Just Some Guy, Laarsland and LukasCPH) and
Mads Pedersen (overlooked by Guilherme (of course), 0w1s, Just Some Guy, Laarsland, Trudgin, and also GPBlanco, Kazistuta, Vladimir and Bomboloni)

As well as those 5, another 4 riders (Tao Geoghegan-Hart, Marc Soler, Thomas Boudat and Simone Consonni) were selected by more than half the teams.

So how many of these 9 riders who most teams picked did we each go for?
All 9 of them: Amis Velo, Hugo Koblet, MC Mountain, Murrjt, Rote Laterne and yours' truly;
8: Abbulf, Blues in the Bottle, Del1962, Hilltop Finisher, Karaev, Madrazo, Ruudz0r, Skidmark and The Fool on the Hill;
7: Alykaptan, Flo, GPBlanco, Jakob747, Leadbelly, Ludwigzgz and Togo;
6: 0w1s, Comodoro, DJW, Italian Gigolo, Joelsim, Kazistuta and Scrool007;
5: Josedin, LukasCPH and Vladimir;
4: Bombolini, Just Some Guy and Trudgin;
3: Laarsland
0: Guilherme Ribeiro.

Amis Velo not only has the most popular 9 riders, but also Tom Bohli, Rodrigo Contreras, and Louis Vervaeke, one of the two riders in joint 12th for popularity.

Dylan Page was in the majority of teams that were entered on Sunday afternoon/evening, but not in any team submitted before his third place in the Trofeo Playa de Palma.

And the Collective Wisdom squad, the standard against which we might test ourselves, is made up of the top 18 riders in terms of popularity (or most hyped at the beginning of the 3 years, if you prefer):
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
DE PLUS Laurens
KÄMNA Lennard
MOSCON Gianni
PEDERSEN Mads
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc
BOUDAT Thomas
CONSONNI Simone
BOHLI Tom
CONTRERAS PINZON Rodrigo
MARTIN Guillaume
VERVAEKE Louis
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe
MAMYKIN Matvey

The reason I didn't pick Consonni was because he hadn't got a team for this year, I have probably made the wrong choice

Let the game begin:
Year 1, Month 1
A few riders give an early token of appreciation to those who chose them:
(Rider, points, teams)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      41   36
PAGE Dylan      36   5
ORAM James      31   10
MAKHCHOUN Mounir      26   1
MANZIN Lorrenzo      16   12
CANTY Brendan      10   4
HOFSTETTER Hugo      10   1
SCULLY Tom      10   1
SQUIRE Robbie      10   1
MARTINELLI Davide      6   9
BETTIOL Alberto      5   2
CALMEJANE Lilian      5   1
CHETOUT Loïc      5   1
CONTRERAS PINZON Rodrigo      5   16
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao      5   24
GOGL Michael      5   4
LOWNDES Jason      5   1
VERVAEKE Louis      5   15
ZURLO Federico      5   2

Although a few riders flaunt our failure to pick them in our faces, primarily:
OKUBAMARIAM ISSAK Tesfom      67

3   Jakob747   97
4   AmisVelo   94
5   The_Fool_on_the_Hill   93

6   Togo   90
6   Trudgin   90
9   Blues_in_the_Bottle   89
9   DJW   89
11   HilltopFinisher   87
12   Flo   83

Happy enough with my team, not really that surprised I'm 2nd in the popularity table as I was going for the 'obvious' ones.

He'll either be spectacularly last - or win by a country mile. ;)

Year 1 Month 2
Points are still low, but who is to say that the scores this month won't be the size of margins between teams in the final reckoning.
Top ten GC points in HC races already: how good might this crop prove to be over the next three years?  At the same time, in this game the Tour of the Philippines gets a mention in the monthly update, so who is to say....

Best scoring riders

CALMEJANE Lilian      126 points   1 team (3rd in the new Tour La Provence, and 8th in the Mediteraneenne)
CANTY Brendan      62   4 (7th in Tour of Oman)
CICCONE Giulio      50   7 (12th in Laiguelia, 5th in Estruchi)
ZEMLYAKOV Oleg      33   2 (Won the Tour of the Philippines)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      30   36 (Stage points in Tour La Provence)
ANTUNES Amaro Manuel Reposo      28   1 (tenth in Volta ao Algarve)
MARTINELLI Davide      20   9 (Stage win in Tour La Provence)
GOGL Michael      19   4 (top 20 in Dubai GC)
DE TIER Floris   19   3 (top 20 in Oman GC)

Year 1 Month 3 (to 3rd April)

Points this month are very much in the same range as those in the game that is in year three, although that is mainly because of the near ubiquity of Gaviria in this edition, and his absence in the 2014-16 edition, and Politt also beat anyone in that game in March, while Moscon and Pedersen would also have been among the top scorers there.  Erik Baska gives this game its first 1.1 winner.

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      169 points    36 teams  (6th in Gent-Wevelgem, stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico, 10th in Dwaars door Vlaanderen)
POLITT Nils      163   7   (5th in Le Samyn, 3rd in West Vlaanderen and 9th in De Panne)
MOSCON Gianni      123   32   (3rd in Settimana Coppi e Bartali, 8th in Nokere)
PEDERSEN Mads      111   28   (won Gent-Wevelgem U23, and top ten in De Panne GC)
BOHLI Tom      82   17  (8th and a stage win in West Vlaanderen)
BASKA Erik      80   10  (First in Handzame)
CHETOUT Loïc      72   1  (2nd in Loire Atlantique and 8th in the Camembert cheese chase)
VENTURINI Clément      53   4   (2nd in Adelie de Vitre)
CICCONE Giulio      50   7 (6th in Settimana Coppi e Bartali)

However, none of us found Robbie Hucker, the 130 point winner of the Tour of Taiwan.

Points gained
Team totals for March are several times the totals for the previous two months.

1   Scrooll07   848  (all 6 of the top scorers this month are in this team, possibly a first in these games)
2   HilltopFinisher   781 (only the top 5 scorers, which is also true of the next 4 teams)
3   Josedin   757
4   HugoKoblet   745
5   The_Fool_on_the_Hill   727

Year 1, Month 4 to May 1

When these guys are a little older, there will be lots of points to report in April: for now, most of them have been taking part in the quiet races that take place in the background of the Spring Classics.

ROSON GARCIA Jaime      125pts   3 teams (Stage win and GC 9th in Tour of Turkey, GC 5th in Castilla y Léon)
BOUDAT Thomas      110   20 (mainly from 2nd in Denain)
VENTURINI Clément      79   4 (6th in both Denain and Roue Tourangelle)

MANZIN Lorrenzo      62   12 (5th in Denain)
VERVAEKE Louis      61   15 (11th in Pais Vasco GC)

MOSCON Gianni      53   32 (mainly from 7th in Yorkshire GC)
COSTA Adrien      47   1 (Tour de Bretagne)

Year 1 Month 5 but only up to 29th May

Early success in this game, we have two GT stage winners already

STEPNIAK Grzegorz      139   2 (GC win and a stage win in Tour of Estonia for 0w1s and Guilherme Ribeiro)
FOLIFOROV Alexander      108   3   (Stage win and other Giro points for Jakob747, LukasCPH and Skidmark)
RÄIM Mihkel      78   2  (2nd in a stage, 3rd overall in Tour of Estonia for DJW and LukasCPH)
ACKERMANN Pascal      74   1 (2nd in a stage, 4th overall in Tour of Estonia for LukasCPH)
CICCONE Giulio      70   7 (Giro Stage win)
ANTUNES Amaro Manuel Reposo      52   1 (7th in Volta Cova da Beira GC, and 18th Vuela Communidad de Madrid GC)
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao      45   24  (Tour of California)
VENTURINI Clément      44   4 (Boucles de l'Aulnes)

but we all missed MEURISSE Xandro (stage win and 3rd in GC in 4 days of Dunkerque. 125pts), and seemed to have given up on WACKERMANN Luca (103pts) and PARRA BUSTAMENTE Heiner Rodrigo (99pts) who were both chosen in the two earlier editions of the game, but not this one although they were still eligible.

Team scores this month
1   LukasCPH   395 (Foliforov, Raim, Ackerman, Geoghegan Hart)
2   0w1s   304 (Stepniak, Geoghegan Hart)
3   Jakob747   299 (Foliforov, Geoghegan Hart)

Standings
Last month's joint leaders were among the lowest scorers in May, so fall to 4th and 5th, with Hilltop Finisher, Hugo Koblet and Skidmark overtaking them.  Conversely, most of the best scorers in May were wretchedly low in the table, so get decent upward movement such as Jakob747's 11 places, and Lukas' 15 spaces.  And while Guilherme remains bottom, he has the consolation of having more than doubled his score.

1   HilltopFinisher   1521
2   HugoKoblet   1412
3   Skidmark   1409
4   Scrooll07   1393

One year on and while deciding who to pick for the 2017-2019 edition, let's see how my boys fared in year 1:
Name 2016
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 833
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao 262
ACKERMANN Pascal * 258
RÄIM Mihkel 230
MARTIN Guillaume 227
BOUDAT Thomas 204
MAMYKIN Matvey 199
PEDERSEN Mads 195
MULLEN Ryan 165
BASKA Erik 116
FOLIFOROV Alexander 116
VERVAEKE Louis 109
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe 87
SKJERPING Kristoffer 83
HOELGAARD Daniel 81
CHEVRIER Clément 53
KÄMNA Lennard 48
CARBEL SVENDGAARD Michael 40
Total 3306

Not that bad actually.
I'm especially proud of my unique pick Pascal Ackermann. Not so proud of Carbel and Kämna ... but after following them up close with Stölting, I'm still confident that they can pull through and deliver in years 2 & 3.
Skjerping's and Carbel's step back to Conti might actually play out in my favour as they could score lots of points with #joker & #virtupro before hopefully getting a pro contract for 2018 and continuing to score.
Gaviria has proven us all right this year; Räim, Martin, Mamykin & Foliforov in particular have shown promising results.

Keep up the good work, lads. :cool

The best possible team at this stage would be have 6266 points: the current leader (blushes) has 61% of that.

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      833   36
MOSCON Gianni      622   32
BETTIOL Alberto      568   2
MEURISSE Xandro      389   0
CALMEJANE Lilian      338   1
HALVORSEN Kristoffer      336   0
VAN AERT Wout      306   0
SCHULTING Peter      281   0
ORTEGA RAMIREZ Mauricio      281   0
COSTA Adrien      274   1
CARPENTER Robin      268   0

POLITT Nils      254   7
WALSCHEID Maximilian      239   6
DE TIER Floris      237   3

KIRSCH Alex      195

BETTIOL Alberto      568   2
CALMEJANE Lilian      338   1

MAMYKIN Matvey      199   13
MARTINELLI Davide      196   9

RAMOS SILVA Kleber      0   1
GADAY OROZCO Lucas Manuel      0   1
DEGREVE Martijn      0   1
APPELT Leo      0   1
CONTRERAS PINZON Rodrigo      5   16

Very close at the end of Year One: everything to play for (and no way of effecting it):
Year 2 Month 1 to Feb 5th

Riders of the month
CALMEJANE Lilian      195pts   1 team   (Won GC with a stage win  and a 2nd in Bessèges, and 3rd in La Marseillaise for Alykaptan)
RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan      148   5  (10th in TDU, 4th in Evans' Ocean Race)
SCOTSON Miles      127   1  (Aussie RR win, 5th in the TT and finishers' points for Just Some Guy)
VERVAEKE Louis      84   15   (a second and a fourth in Majorcan races)
SENNI Manuel      77   1   (3rd in Volta a la Comminitat Valenciana for Amis Velo)
CANTY Brendan      50   4 (Top 10 in both Aus nat champs events, top 20 in Evans' Ocean Race)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      46   36   (2 stage wins in San Juan)
POLITT Nils      45   7  (6th in GC at Bessèges)

Points earned
These scores are lower than the riders 1 year behind them: these riders are meant to be more established....
1   AmisVelo   424 (Restrepo, Vervaeke, Senni & Gaviria)
2   Ludwigzgz   358  (Restrepo, Vervaeke & Gaviria)
3   Alykaptan   293 (Calmejane & Gaviria)

Standings
I'm still getting a nosebleed, while DJW moves ahead of Flo for 2nd.  Amis Velo's 7 place rise is the best of the month, and he and Alykaptan come into the top ten in place of Del and Karaev.  Given his dominant win in the 2014-16 win, Ludwigzgz' rise to 4th looks ominous.

Year 2 Month 2 and up to 5th March

February yields fewer points than January, and year one (for one team at least) outscores year 2:  points in these games can be rather counter-logical.

(Name/points/teams)
ANTUNES Amaro Manuel Reposo      119   1 (Stage win and 5th in GC in Volta ao Algarve for GuilhermeRibeiro)
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley      116   2  (7th in Langkawi, 5th in Larciano for Armchair Cyclist and Ruudz0r)
CALMEJANE Lilian      85   1 (5th in Haut Var GC, points in Drome, Ardeche and Laigueglia for Alykaptan)
OWEN Logan      65   1 (stage win 6th in    Volta ao Alentejo for Kazistuta)
DUNBAR Eddie      59   5 (5th in    Volta ao Alentejo)
RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan      53   5 (2nd in Vuelta a Murcia)

1   Alykaptan   357 (Calmejeane and Dunbar, and 11 other scorers)
2   Ruudz0r   337 (Bernal and 13 others)
3   Armchair_Cyclist   307  (Bernal and 13 others)
4   AmisVelo   296
5   Ludwigzgz   286
6   Joelsim   272
7   Kazistuta   265
8   Murrjt   260
9   The_Fool_on_the_Hill   258
10   HugoKoblet   256
10   Del1962   256
12   Leadbelly   241
13   HilltopFinisher   236
14   Madrazo   234
15   Karaev   233
16   GPBlanco   231
16   MCMountain   231
18   Vladimir   230
19   Josedin   219
20   Comodoro   217
21   RoteLaterne   199
22   Abbulf   198
23   Scrooll07   196
23   ItalianGigolo   196
25   Flo   193
26   Skidmark   189
27   0w1s   180

35   DJW   141
35   Trudgin   141
37   Bomboloni   140

My continued, and extended, lead is more of a surprise to me than it is to any of you, I assure you.  Ludwigzgz' rise to 2nd is ominous, given his dominance of the 2014-16 game, but his 5 place rise is overshadowed by 6 place moves for Alykaptan, Amis Velo (both of those two are new in the top ten) and Ruudz0r.

Standings

(This is getting embarrassing, but in a different way from my performance in most games... )
Being 2nd in the month increases Armchair's lead, while Alykaptan leaps 3 places to 2nd.  Ludwizgz drops from 2nd to 7th, but three others have more severe drops, while the highest placed of the 5 place risers is Amis Velo, who is matched outside the top ten by MCMountain and Rote Laterne.  Del1962 and Karaev sneak into the top ten.

Year 2, Month 4 3rd to 30th April (yes, that is a week ago, but it was the most recent update when I went to CQ this evening.  I guess it fits the intention of monthly updates...

Other than Moscon, the points were gleaned mainly from stage races rather than the classics
CALMEJANE Lilian      156pts (Circuit de la Sarthe stage and GC wins, and 5 WT finishes) for Alykaptan
ROSON GARCIA Jaime      133 (2nd in GC, a stage win and a 2nd, in Croatia) for 3 teams

Year 2 Month 7 3 to 30 July

While the big points in July were available in France, there were still other races going on, and some of our picks did OK in them.

CALMEJANE Lilian      124 (a (very impressive) stage win at the Tour, and GC points) for Alykaptan
BETTIOL Alberto      111 (6th in San Sebastian, and some Tour points)   for Armchair Cyclist and DJW
GROSSSCHARTNER Felix      56   4 teams

Standings
The top three in the overall all scored well this month (all in the top 5), so they hold onto their positions, but below that both Flo and Murrjt move up a spot, and a little farther down Del1962 has a 2 place rise within the top ten, and Karaev the same to enter that exalted company.  Ruudzor's reward for being top scorer of the month is a 4 place rise.

Alykaptan has some riders I really like, but I didn't know or pick them at the end of 2015.  I find myself hoping that Enric Mas, Calmejane, Dunbar and Roson have great careers from 2019 onwards.

The top two scorers in August were already on the podium: luckily for me only one of them moved up.  Ludwigzgz and Amis Velo also move up within the top ten, while the 8 place riser of the month, Blues in the Bottle, is the only new entrant to the top ten.

Year 2, Month 10 25th Sept to 5th November  (with little likely to happen for the rest of the year)

October scoring shows Italian Autumn classics, the final WT tours, and those end of year Chinese races at which sprinters can fill their CQ  boots.

Points this month
MOSCON Gianni      241pts (5th in Giro dell'Emilia, 7th in Tre Valli Varesine, 3rd in Il Lombardia) for 32 teams
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      205 (4 stage wins and a 2nd, and not surprisingly the points classification, in Guangxi)   36
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe      192 (9th in Tre Valli Varesine, 7th in Milano-Torino, 4th GC in Turkey)   14
MARTIN Guillaume      171 (A stage and the overall in Giro della Toscana)   15
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley      118 (5th in Giro della Toscana, 13 in Il Lombardia)    for Armchair and Ruudzor
GODOY Yonder Eduardo      111  (6th in Turkey GC)   for Trudgin
ROOSEN Timo      95   for Flo, Joelsim and Scrool07
CONSONNI Simone      76   19
ALZATE ESCOBAR Carlos Eduardo      66   for Trudgin
WALSCHEID Maximilian      62   6
BETTIOL Alberto      54   for Armchair and DJW

Collective Wisdom was one of the biggest scorers of the month (a collective pat on the back for us all), which probably correlates with the top teams on monthly scores having very similar top scorers.

1   Ruudz0r   1075 (Moscon, Gaviria, Martinez, Martin and Bernal)
2   Murrjt   1010 (Moscon, Gaviria, Martinez, Martin and Consonni)
2   Skidmark   1010 (Moscon, Gaviria, Martinez, Martin and Consonni)

Standings
Of the three games running parallel, this is the one I most look forward to updating, but I'm still unsure how long that this situation will last.  The lead has increased for now though.
The top six remain in the positions they were in after the World Championships (last update); behind them, Skidmark and Ruudzor are into the top ten, and with 6 and 7 place rises respectively are the biggest positive movers this time around.

The Collective Ignorance team are those that none of us had heard of or regarded as much of a prospect 2 years ago: we were wrong.

MEURISSE Xandro      831
VAN AERT Wout      798
ALARCON GARCIA Raul      669
GIDICH Yevgeniy      627
JENSEN August      594
GAUDU David      548
ORTEGA RAMIREZ Mauricio      526
AVILA VANEGAS Edwin Alcibiades      510
HUFFMAN Evan      505
HALVORSEN Kristoffer      487
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl      478
MCCABE Travis      451
CARPENTER Robin      439
GARCIA DE MATEOS RUBIO Vicente      428
KIRSCH Alex      425
GIBBONS Ryan      424
VAN DER HOORN Taco      411
BAYLY Cameron      408
Total   9559 which would place this group in 6th place, and only just ahead of our Collective Wisdom.

On the other hand, the Fruits of our Thoughts selection: the best team out of those who were selected, even if only once:

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      2101pts   36 teams (out of 37)
MOSCON Gianni      1486   32
CALMEJANE Lilian      1232   1 (Alykaptan)
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley      925   2 (Armchair and Bernal)
BETTIOL Alberto      922   2 (Armchair and DJW)
MARTIN Guillaume      724   15
ROSON GARCIA Jaime      701   3 (Alykaptan, Leadbelly, Vladimir)
PEDERSEN Mads      673   28
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc      627   22
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao      591   24
VENTURINI Clément      586   4
RÄIM Mihkel      534   2 (DJW, LukasCPH)
POLITT Nils      533   7
ANTUNES Amaro Manuel Reposo      472   1 (Guilherme Ribeiro)
CICCONE Giulio      459   7
CONSONNI Simone      449   19
BOUDAT Thomas      442   20
SENNI Manuel      432   1 (Amis Velo)
Total   13889

So at this stage, the Best Possible team is:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      2101
MOSCON Gianni      1486
CALMEJANE Lilian      1232
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley      925
BETTIOL Alberto      922
MEURISSE Xandro      831
VAN AERT Wout      798
MARTIN Guillaume      724
ROSON GARCIA Jaime      701
PEDERSEN Mads      673
ALARCON GARCIA Raul      669
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc      627
GIDICH Yevgeniy      627
JENSEN August      594
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao      591
VENTURINI Clément      586
GAUDU David      548
RÄIM Mihkel      534
Total      15169

With a neat symmetry, 6 of these are in the Collective Wisdom group, 6 are rarer picks, and 6 were totally overlooked.

Armchair is achieving 66.7% of the maximum possible: 6 of us are failing to reach the 50% mark.

Year 3 Month 1 up to 4th Feb

The last lap begins for this game, in which the best scores and the game determining performances are to be expected.

But it is January, so we start the year's scoring unspectacularly.  The top four scorers are riders who didn't perform too well in year one, so also featured in the update for the 2017-19 game.

Ruudz0r and MC Mountain also have positive moves within the top ten, and Comodoro has the biggest forward jump, 3 places.

I fear that a bit of white paint and José Rojas may have just given Alykaptan the game.

Year 3, Month 3 5th March to 1st April

A lot of points scored this month, with one popular pick having an exceptional month to win most of them.  Once a rider has won Paris Nice, or podiumed the Ronde, he can be said to have emerged

SOLER GIMENEZ Marc   498pts (Paris Nice win with 2 stage podiums, 5th in Catalunya, and 6th in GP Indurain) for 22 teams
HOFSTETTER Hugo   331 (2nd in Denain and Cholet, 3rd in Nokere Koerse and Tourangelle, 3 other 1.1 top tens) for Alykaptan
PEDERSEN Mads   255 (2nd in Ronde, 5th in Dwars) for 28 teams
ACKERMANN Pascal   166 (2nd in Dreidaagse, 3rd in Handzame) for Lukas CPH
SISR Frantisek   140 (Ronde van Drenthe win) for 0w1s
MOSCON Gianni   131 (8th in E3 Harelbeke, placing points in Strade Bianche, Ronde and Dwars)   32 teams
ROSON GARCIA Jaime   91pts Alykaptan, Leadbelly, Vladimir.
BOUDAT Thomas   91pts   20 teams
HOELGAARD Daniel   88   8
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe   86   14
GROSSSCHARTNER Felix   80   4
POLITT Nils   73   7
ROOSEN Timo   72   3

I'd have to check, but 2nd place in a monument and winning one of the most prestigious one week tours is probably the best one-month score in the short history of this game.

1   Alykaptan   1530 (Soler, Hofstedder, Pedersen, Moscon, Roson, Boudat)
2   Del1962   1310 (Soler, Pedersen, Moscon, Boudat, Hoelgaard, Grossschartner, Politt)
3   HugoKoblet   1307 (Soler, Pedersen, Moscon, Boudat, Hoelgaard, Martinez, Politt)
4   RoteLaterne   1244 (Soler, Pedersen, Moscon, Boudat, Martinez, Grossschartner)

Standings

The pendulum swings back to the monthly winner (again), Alykaptan.  Bernal's fall in Catalunya,  and the speed of his return, will be important to the game, but some misfortune off-camera obviously affected Calmejeane in GP Indurain as well, costing Alykaptan a couple of dozen points. At the moment, Hugo Hofstedder's consistent month in 1.1s and 1.HCs is the difference between the top two.
Murrjt leapfrogs DJW to stand on the podium, Hugo leaps into the top ten and straight up to 6th while Togo makes a omore modest entry to the top 10, and just behind that Del1962 has the best rise (7 places) this month.

Year 3 Month 4 April 2 to May 6

My fears after Catalunya's last stage that Bernal's point scoring had been curtailed was unduly pessimistic

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   308 (2nd on GC and Mts classification, 3rd in Pts classification, a stage win and another podium, all in Romandie) for    Armchair and Ruudz0r

Standings
The scores are not as big as last month, but although former leader Armchair Cyclist was a very respectable 4th in the month, the current leader is even higher placed, second on the April scores, so the margin extends to nearly 500.  Murrjt slightly increases his lead over 4th place, but drops yet farther behind the top two. Ruudz0r takes a 7 place jump, back into the top ten.

Year 3 Month 8/9 7th August to 30th September  (sorry for running 2 months together; I was rather busy with the Vuelta game at the beginning of Sept)

Give the riders this far into their careers 2 months and some big races, and you'll get some pretty big scores, for some teams at least.

MAS NICOLAU Enric   474   (2nd in Vuelta GC, with stage win and some other points) for Alykaptan
MOSCON Gianni   389   (5th in World Champ RR, 4th in the TITT, wins Agostoni and Toscana) for 32teams 32
SCHACHMANN Maximilian   372   (4th in BinckBank tour, 3rd in Deutschland Tout, both with stage points, 3rd in Euro & 11th in World ITTs, World TTT win) for Leadbelly
ACKERMANN Pascal   325 (GP Formies and Brussels Classic wins)   for Lukas CPH
ROOSEN Timo   202   (4th in Quebec, 5th in Montreal) for Flo, Joelsim and Scrool07
NOMMELA Aksel   163   for GuilhermeRibeiro

Standings
The pendulum between the two leaders had been moving toward Alykaptan for some time: Mas's performance in the Vuelta made that quite decisive, and as top scorer this month, he has made that lead pretty much unassailable.  Second this month, and in third place since April, Murrjt now has reason to look up at second, rather than nervously at those below him.  Hugo Koblet and Flo both move up one within the top ten, and Skidmark and Hilltop Finisher each manage to move up by two spots.

Year 3 Month 10/11 1st October to 18th November (and therefore effectively to the end of the season, and the game)  It didn't seem worth doing an end of October update if that left only a handful of November races to make a separate job out of.  Though I don't think waiting for the end of Tour of Fuzhou really made much difference.

MOSCON Gianni   336 points (wins in Itallian TT championship and Tour of Guangxi) for 32 of the 37 teams
WALSCHEID Maximilian   204   (Munsterland Giro win and Guangxi stage points)  for 6 teams
ACKERMANN Pascal   185 (5th in Munsterland and stage points in Guangxi) for Lukas CPH
GROSSSCHARTNER Felix   179 (2nd in Guangxi) 4 teams
VELASCO Simone   107 (10th in Gran Piemonte, 7th in Tour of Hainan) 3 teams
GUERREIRO Ruben Antonio Almeida   82   6
DENZ Nico   80   1
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   77   2
POLITT Nils   72   7

A tie for the final bragging rights:
1   Ludwigzgz   786 (Moscon, Walscheid, Guerreiro)
1   Flo   786  (Moscon, Walscheid, Velasco)
3   Scrooll07   762 (Moscon, Walscheid, Politt)
4   RoteLaterne   749 (Moscon, Walscheid, Velasco)

Final Standings I presume, but I'll check back at the end of the year

Ludwigzgz, Flo and Scrool all moved one place up within the top ten, Ludwigzgz being the highest placed of these, while Rote Laterne, Del1962 and Fool on the Hill each get to finish 2 places higher than had seemed likely.

The top three all finished like the GC podium on the Champs Elyssee, rolling in unimpressively mid table with no threat to each other's positions.  Alykaptan had taken control late in the game, and the Vuelta put him beyond reach after a close battle earlier in the year, while I just had enough in reserve from my early lead to retain 2nd spot.

Unique picks of Calmejeane and Enric Mas make Alykaptan a very deserved winner, leaving the rest of us wondering how he found them three years ago: congratulations, and thanks to all competitors (if anyone is still following at this stage)

Full analysis of rider scores etc to follow on some cold wet December evening.   Here's the spreadsheet at Dropbox if you don't want to wait. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cywbi332xnvf7ke/Emerging%20CQ%202016%20to%202018.xls?dl=0)

Cheers for your work over the past three years Armchair!

Looking back it's difficult to remember why I picked some of my guys. I must have thought Tim Ariesen was going to be the next Groenewegen and that Van Gestel and Van Rooy were going to be the next talents off the Topsport conveyor belt ....... Well you can't be right all the time.

On the other hand my one unique pick turned out to be a decent one with Schachmann coming good in the final year.

the end of the season, and the game
Thanks for all the work! :cool

Looking back it's difficult to remember why I picked some of my guys.
I have a couple of good picks that were pretty obvious even back then - Gaviria, G. Martin, TGH, Mads P -, but also a unique pick who exceeded my own expectations in Pascal Ackermann. :win

I also have some picks that did alright - Boudat, Dani Martinez, Räim, Mullen, even Kämna ... and then there are several whose careers never really got off the ground (at least not in terms of scoring points): Carbel, Skjerping, Foliforov, Vervaeke, D. Hoelgaard, Mamykin, Baska, Chevrier.

I suppose there will always be some of those; but 8 out of 18 who scored <300 points in the past three years combined (and thus under 100 points on average per season) are simply too many to get a top placing.

The final round up: End of Year 3

Two teams had got Filippo Ganna at an early stage, so they pick up a 14 point bonus from Najar's San Juan disqualification: it even pushes Comodoro up one place.

So the final definitive standings (unless anyone can tell me of point changes for 2016 or 17 that happened after the end of those years) are:
1   Alykaptan   17160
2   Armchair_Cyclist   16273
3   Murrjt   16058
4   Ludwigzgz   15500
5   Ruudz0r   15465
6   Flo   15363
7   HugoKoblet   15218
8   DJW   15210
9   Scrooll07   15185
10   MCMountain   14953
11   Madrazo   14886
12   RoteLaterne   14797
13   Skidmark   14724
14   Blues_in_the_Bottle   14676
15   Del1962   14537
16   Togo   14420
17   GPBlanco   14409
18   Karaev   14112

35   Laarsland   9539
36   JustSomeGuy   8303
37   GuilhermeRibeiro   4173
   CollectiveWisdom   15577

The best teams in 2018 only were:
1   Alykaptan   7285
2   Murrjt   6461
3   Ruudz0r   6271
4   RoteLaterne   6265
5   Ludwigzgz   6233
6   Armchair_Cyclist   6160
7   Scrooll07   6084
8   HugoKoblet   6080
9   MCMountain   5851
10   Madrazo   5849
A huge margin on the year for Alykaptan, founded on unique picks of Mas and Hofstetter.

The best possible selection over the three years was:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   2703 points   36 teams
MOSCON Gianni   2525   32
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   2055   2

TOTAL               26012
Alykaptan scores 66% of that

The Collective Ignorance team, those who had not struck any of us as great prospects three years ago, was:
VAN AERT Wout   1395
MEURISSE Xandro   1338
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   1194

MASNADA Fausto   678
AVILA VANEGAS Edwin Alcibiades   663
HALVORSEN Kristoffer   649

TOTAL:   15373 (beaten by 5 teams and the Collective Wisdom team)

Three riders who were picked as future stars failed to get any points at all in these 3 seasons, and 2 of our Collective Wisdom team of the most hyped riders have failed to reach double figures yet.
