Title: Misc. American Tour Races 2017 (Vuelta a Guatemala)
Post by: Leadbelly on November 30, 2016, 11:14
Welcome to America!

I figure we'll have separate threads for the higher ranked races:

San Juan
Winston Salem
Utah
Colorado
Alberta

...and leave this thread for the many .2 events. Any help/contributions will be much appreciated and if you have a burning desire to do a preview for any of the races then feel free.

The route is not set in stone yet I think, there was talk of wanting to get the finish at Casa del Padre in as well, but there has been problems there in the past with drunk and violent fans. However the general consensus seems to be that this could one of the toughest Vueltas in a while.

Last year for example the climbing days were interspersed with flatter days for the sprinters/break and thus gave a chance for the GC men to recover. Going by the profiles you can see that won't happening this year. Stages seven through to nine will be crucial. In theory stage six is an MTF too, but it's a very easy one, so unfortunately you can't really say that there are five tough days in a row.

Nah. We've thought that for what feels like half a dozen years now.
Rujanito will soldier on! :)

You may remember that both of these teams were reported as being in serious financial trouble a few months back. Their presence here would suggest that those have been somewhat alleviated, but as the article says, some of their riders may not be in the best shape after what they have been through.

They're an U23 Bundesliga team (non-UCI) from Hessen. One of the best German teams below Conti level, I would say.
Great to see them make a trip to Táchira. :cool

Look who's back to winning ways.

His ban actually ended nearly a year ago, but he didn't race Tachira in 2016. It will be interesting to see if he is selected this time round.

.....and he held on to take the overall. Stage wins went to Briceno, Salinas, Flores and Rodriguez. Overall a very strong performance from the JHS Aves team - all six of their riders in the top-14 of GC.

Bramon is the next build-up race and starts on the 27th.

JHS Aves upped their game even more at Bramon, but are they peaking too early?

Two stage wins for the team from Monsalve and Rodriguez, three of the top four in GC, best team classement (obviously) and U23 winner for Mendoza.

The other stage wins went to Roniel Campos and Eduin Becerra.

Why would a team enter a race in Venezuela if they don't have the funds to get there?! :fp
And why would a rider who's supposed to do a UCI race in early January celebrate Christmas?! :P

http://crciclismo.com/2017/01/04/el-equipo-del-nestle-giant-ausente-en-la-vuelta-tachira-2017/

The real reason Nestle aren't back to defend their title? Tit for tat pettiness of course.

A Venezuelan team wasn't invited to Costa Rica, so initially the Venezuelans said they wouldn't pay air fares for the defending champ's team and then when Nestle made noises about buying their own tickets, they just withdrew the previous invitation completely.

So this is why Chavarria was trying to get the gig with the Colombia team. I just wonder if his "flu" was Nestle trying to have the final word.

Iván Sosa
Kevin Rivera
Mattia Frapporti
Rafaello Bonusi
Andrea Palini
Marco Benfatto

The addition of an extra day to San Juan won't hurt Androni after all, as they're taking different riders to each race.

Bernardo Colex
Jesús Ortiz
Daniel Balsero
Kristian Yustre
Álvaro Saiz
José Pérez
Valentín Arenas

Six from these eight I guess.

JHS Aves: Yonathan Monsalve (Todo Terreno), Manuel Medina (Escalador), Jhorman Flores (Escalador), Jackson Rodríguez (Media Montaña), José Mendoza (Sub.23, Escalador), Maky Román (Escalador).

Fundación Misael Silva Roa: Brandon Leira (Gregario), Héctor Valderrama (Sub. 23, Gregario), Omar Moreno (Sub. 23, Gregario), José Moreno (Gregario), Isaac Yaguaro (Velocista) Yorman Fuentes (Velocista).

Grupo JHS: Jimmy Briceño (Escalador), Nelson Camargo (Escalador), Luis Díaz (Escalador), Carlos Torres (Media Montaña), Wilmen Bravo (Velocista), José Marquéz (Escalador)

Briceno gets the nod to ride for Grupo JHS.

One other thing I take from that article is that the three teams mentioned (JHS Aves, Fundación Misael Silva Roa and Grupo JHS) all seem to ride under the JHS umbrella. Now aren't there meant to be UCI rules about that? Of course we've had in previous years two teams riding in support of Rujano (Gobernación de Mérida and Fundacion Rujano)....

The foreign teams that come to Venezuela always complain about the same thing. It is not possible to compete well, 6, 7 or 8 cyclists against 12, 14, 16 or more. It is to play a soccer game of 5 against 11, the numerical difference distorts the competition, overvalues the Venezuelan cyclists and accustoms them to run on a false basis and when they have to run real cycling come the disappointments.

Today's finish in Borota is a new one for the race I believe. Small group finish after a short descent from the MTF? I'll go with Monsalve.

The president of the Sports Institute of Táchira and Sport Táchira, responsible bodies of four teams (including the leader's team - Kino Tachira) in competition of the Vuelta al Táchira, again enters the controversy, this time for obstructing the action of the cyclist Roniel Campos in the eighth stage (his white-colored vehicle hindered the mechanical assistance to the rider Roniel Campos so that he could not change the wheel of his bicycle) and also having four Runners expelled from the competition for being "towed" on the ascent to Casa del Padre

The four expelled riders were Pedro Gutiérrez, Jesús Pérez, Juan Ruiz y Carlos Molina (three from Kino), but what difference will it make when you have four teams riding for you?

Also hit with 20 second time penalties were Yonathan Monsalve, Jhorman Flores, Jimmy Briceño, Luis Díaz, Jackson Rodríguez and Roniel Campos. Reasons unknown - possibly just for being rivals of Salinas.

JB ROPA DEPORTIVA

http://jbropadeportiva.com/web/jb-ropa-deportiva-presente-en-la-vuelta-independencia-en-republica-dominicana/

Kevin Sepulveda
Maikol Henao
Jhonatan Sarmiento
Cristian Torres
Sebastien Caicedo
Cristian Gutierrez
Anderson Paredes
Fernando Briceño

Torres was ninth last year when riding for Foundation, Sepulveda could be good for a stage or two and Paredes (12th in Tachira) is a youngster to watch out for. He's off to join Cartucho.es-Magro in Spain after the race - the fourth(?) Venezuelan riding there.

These guys had a disappointing Tachira. Delgado was the best finisher for them in 16th place, but they're a lot better than that suggests. If we look further back, just the one extra year, we find Jorge Abreu in 2nd, Rojas in 3rd, Delgado in 4th and both Molina and Daniel Abreu in the top twenty.

Last year the race had a great website, but it's not been updated for 2017.....

So no profiles and not even a start list yet. TTT later on today, I assume it will follow the same format as last year and just give set GC gaps (5 seconds) between the teams.

ACT won half the stages in last year's event and who knows, that vein of form could continue in 2017.

Since PCS doesn't like TTTs, the result is:

1st Aero
2nd Inteja
3rd JB Ropa
4th Global Cycling Team

Well, rightly or wrongly they have decided to go with the GC gaps being the same as the stage gaps. So advantage Sanchez from the gun.

Start List (http://www.procyclingstats.com/race/Vuelta_Independencia_Nacional_Republica_Dominicana_2017_Stage_1_Startlist)

No Beltran for Inteja, but they do have Brenes. Elsewhere Turpin shows up for Velo Passion Caraibe, Ubeto and Chacon for Ccd Carene Cycling and Brand is riding for Novo Nordisk Devo.

Inteja off the mark! Video of the sprint with an excited crowd in the link. I did wonder why Torres is riding here and not in LA, but the team won't be worried about that.

Torres, Taveras and Milan amongst others were part of a break and the bonuses they picked up are partly the reason why there are a few changes in the GC. The other reason is some gaps in the sprint - Isamel Sanchez, Cruz and a few others lost a little bit of time.

Capellan the previous leader was a DNF.

If you watch the finish at 17m00 you'll see it was just a guy with a chequered flag and no crowds about to cheer the riders on. The reason for this is that the finish took place at the 3km mark. The people to blame? The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET).

http://www.diariolibre.com/deportes/ciclismo/ismael-sanchez-mantiene-la-defensa-de-su-liderato-de-la-vuelta-independencia-LD6467782

Quote
The president of the Dominican Federation of Cycling, Jorge Blas Diaz, expressed his concern about the lack of attention of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET), headed by General Frener Bello Arias. Laetapa had to finish in front of the Park Duarte in San Francisco, but the poor collaboration of the place Amet led to him to finish 3 km before, reason why it was in 132.8

La Vuelta is at risk in terms of its international evaluation, as this circuit is supervised by a commissioner sent by the International Cycling Union. "If we do not find this provision of the Ministry of Public Works

Three units of the Military Commission of the Ministry of Public Works and the Minister of Sports, Danilo Diaz, have the Vuelta saved, according to Blas. It is not possible that "this event has so many problems with security," he said. "We will be a disgrace to Russia, Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland, who are here. Every representation of the international countries that see all this disorder, that the authorities (of Amet) do not help us. For us it's a shame. "

Trust that for the remaining two days of the tour, safety, a key element of a Tour, does not result in a problem. Never before had the Vuelta had this difficulty and even the director of Amet appointed a colonel as security manager. La Vuelta, currently, does not have a team of franchisors, which has not existed at any stage, except the local staff only for the departures and some of the arrival.

The Vuelta is "excellent," Blas said, it's just the safety aspect, but "can we do nothing?"

He regretted what happened at the arrival, because the stage was very well prepared, not so the order of the vehicles, some of which were withdrawn, but still with half an hour left three cars in the goal area.

Ironically Amet's agent called him later to tell him that everything was ready, but it had been minutes since the riders had reached the goal.

In days past, he said, he visited the San Francisco carnival, where he is from, and the "February 27 was clean, not a single vehicle, since closed in the morning, because there was carnival in the afternoon."

On the work of the Military Commission of Public Works, he defined it as: "these people have saved the Vuelta, if we do not find those people with the disposition and the delivery that they are doing, we would be ugly, ugly, ugly. Those people throw themselves and do not give anyone a chance ", other than the tour to penetrate the caravan)

Today is the queen stage.

Silber and UHC were facing off at the weekend in the Tuscon Bicycle Classic. From the other Joe Martin starters only Toronto Hustle sent a full team, but there were a few appearances from others (Dal-Cin for example) just riding on their own.

There were only three stages: TT, road stage and a circuit.

Roth won the 5.1km TT and Silber dominated the standings with three riders in the top-5. Piccoli (Tour of Tobago winner) was second at 12s, but the nearest big danger was McCabe back at 26s.

UHC hit back on stage 2.

http://clippedin.bike/tbc-day-2-uhc-launches-to-catch-break-in-final-lap-rally-secures-yellow-jersey/

Quote
Daniel Eaton and I and [Lucas Sebastian] Haedo went to the front and just slammed it and sent it right there in a split, and all of a sudden it was just the five of us – me, Eaton, Chad [Beyer] and two Silber guys,” McCabe said.

McCabe said he and his team knew Silber Pro Cycling Team was working hard and that Silber hit the panic button to catch a break of about nine riders. Once UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling knew the break was down to two and a half minutes, McCabe said they went for it after crossing the railroad tracks with less than 20 miles to go.

“Everyone was just kind of working really well, and we ended up catching the guys who had been out there all day long, and we were still fresh,” McCabe said. “Rode hard, caught them and then it was still racing from there on out to the finish.”

Ellsay took over the lead, but he didn't have the large advantage over McCabe that Roth had had and it proved on the final day not to be enough as the Blue Train delivered McCabe to a second win (with bonuses).

https://twitter.com/GordFraser/status/843548554702422016

Gord was disappointed, but McCabe seems in really good form so far this year and crucially he won't be at Joe Martin (according to the start list). So I think he should still be fairly happy with the performance especially by some of the new guys on the team.

The San Dimas Stage Race this weekend is the final build up event before Joe Martin.

In fact I shouldn't really call it a build up event as it is a proper race in it's own right, but just not a UCI one. However it's parcour almost mirrors Joe Martin so it is ideal prep and should give us an idea (from the teams that are competing) who we might see towards the pointy end next week.

http://sdsr.bike/

Quote
The race consists of three exciting stages in three great venues:

• A challenging Time Trial up Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) on Friday, March 24th
• A grueling classic Road Race around Bonelli Park on Saturday, March 25th
• A fast and furious Criterium around downtown San Dimas on Sunday, March 26th

One less stage than Joe Martin, but you can see the similarities.

Competing teams include amongst others:

Cylance
Axeon
Jelly Belly
Elevate

and like Tuscon a few guys riding solo or just with a couple of team mates.

Some names to watch out for include Piccoli, Morton, Oliveira, Carpenter, Curran and Stinky Carl.

The official twitter handle #jmsr40 and the race account don't seem that great so far on updates.

Luckily we have Gord Fraser (https://twitter.com/GordFraser/with_replies) to the rescue.

Mannion and De Vos setting good times, with the Canadian leading on 9m17 (that's ten seconds down on Acevedo's winning time from last year).

.....and zero Axeon riders in the top twenty.

Also Canada > USA :-x

It's set up nicely actually for the next three stages. The first out and out sprinter Murphy is 25s back which should be just about recoverable, but there's plenty of riders in between who can pick up bonuses or try and ruin the sprinters days.

A split has actually been introduced between Rice and Marcotte (not reflected above currently). From the Cylance rider down to 79th place they are at +3s. So Mannion moves up to second on the GC and a few other contenders move a bit closer.

Another close one. The Cylance DS said something about a parked car near the finish disrupted the riders a bit, so on another day it could have been different.

Also I'm not sure I understand why UHC are trying for a stage win with Haedo when they could lead out Mannion for some potential bonuses, but maybe we'll see that today.

It's not only Young's victory that Rally have to celebrate, but some bonus seconds that De Vos managed to pick up. We already know that De Vos is ahead if they finish level on time, so this gives them a cushion of 3½ seconds going into today's crit.

The US must be the crime capital of the world......another weekend, another mugging.

This time it was Rally who were the victims. Wet weather and a strong break including Carpenter were the ones hitting them over the head with a lead pipe.

They probably though they had it covered with Huffman in the break too (a couple of seconds ahead of Carpenter in the GC) and he normally is no slouch, but Carpenter was picking up more bonuses than him and that must have been when they realised their mistake. Carpenter attacked from the break with three laps to go and I'm guessing here that Huffman dropped back to try and drag the peloton closer, but maybe we'll get a race report to confirm this. Anyway it was too late.

5 man podiums is so last week, what we need is the top-eight up there.

Carpeneter is an interesting rider. I'm sure I read he had offers to go PCT over the winter, but decided to stay with Holowesko. He's definitely strong enough to race at that level.

Vuelta Ciclista del Uruguay 7th - 16th April

Stage 1  »  Las Piedras – Minas (129.4km)

Stage 2  »  Santa Rosa – Colonia (192km)

Stage 3A  »  Carmelo – Fray Bentos (141.2km)

Stage 3B  »  Paraje Las Víboras – Mercedes TTT  (20.4km)

Stage 4  »  Young – Flores – Durazno (164.1km)

Stage 5  »  Paso de los Toros – Pueblo Ansina (197.7km)

Stage 6  »  Cerro Largo TT (34.2km)

Stage 7  »  Cerro Largo – Treinta y Tres (107.1km)

Stage 8  »  Velazquez - Rocha - Castillos – Rocha (169.7km)

Stage 9  »  San Carlos - Pan de Azucar - Maldonado (159.1km)

Stage 10  »  Maldonado – Canelones - Shoping Costa Urbana (119.4km)

Usually not the most exciting of races. Our best bet for some action is wind otherwise it's likely to come down to the TTs and bonuses.

We should get the full list of teams late tomorrow, but the breakdown is 24 local teams and 7 foreign.

https://twitter.com/Bike76Com/status/849589657088253954

Funvic will be there in only their second UCI race of the season. It could be their last too (!), depending on how the UCI views the bonus (buy three and get two free) dope issues.

#brasil

Magno Nazaret (former winner)
Roberto Silva
Murilo Affonso
Francisco Chamorro (winner of four stages in 2015)
André Gohr
Flávio Santos (third in 2015 - second really)

A couple of other teams taking part include Lotería del Táchira (Jorge Abreu and Campos) and Ribeirão Preto (Nascimento, Melo and Egidio).

Start list (via Eddy Mansulino):

Four of the Argentine CT teams make the trip across the River Plate, but there is no Rosas this year of course. He had signed for Tusnad, but that was before he crashed his quad bike and broke his left knee and pelvis - he's only just got out of hospital. Even without him though they still have some strong riders to challenge the hegemony of Schneck - Trillini who was sixth in the San Juan TT, Escuela who was fourth overall in the same race, two of the Richeze brothers, Chamorro from Funvic and Medici who is riding for Cerro Largo.

Well he made it to the finish and only lost a few seconds via splits and bonuses, but he won't like what's on the menu tomorrow - a 34km TT. Depending on how bad the road rash etc is, it would be no big surprise if Affonso or Cardoso is leading after tomorrow.

Stage 1  »  Silver City - Mogollon Whitewater Mesa (146.5km)

This is actually an incorrect map as due to roadworks (http://tourofthegila.com/tour-of-the-gila-forced-to-alter-iconic-mogollon-finish/) they won't be climbing up to Mogollon. Instead they will finish at Whitewater Mesa which is roughly at the base of the steep climb at 89.3 miles. In other words it will likely be a sprint.

Stage 2  »  The Inner Loop (120.7km)

Hmmmmm. A town called Truth or Consequences (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_or_Consequences,_New_Mexico)

Stage 3  »  Tyrone TT  (26km)

Stage 4  »  Downtown Silver City Criterium (69.5km)

Stage 5  »  Gila Monster (161.9km)

Last weekend the Alabama Cycling Classic took place. This encompassed the Sunny King Crit and the McClelland Road Race with both races being part of the US Pro Road Tour (Joe Martin was the first race).

In the first race it was Murphy (of the John variety) who took the win ahead of crit specialists Alzate and Menzies.

The road race was over a fairly hilly circuit and only 25 riders managed to get to the finish.

Jaramillo won the two-up sprint over Oronte with Marcotte and McCabe the best of the rest.

After duking it out for the stage win on the Monster last year, Daniel J and Acevedo are back as team mates. The team looks to have a lot of strength in depth and it wouldn't surprise me if they won a few stages here with McCabe looking the best bet, but from a GC standpoint a podium may have to suffice.

Not many GC names didn't make it to the group at six seconds. Burke had a small crash at 5km to go, so he finished down a little. Norris was in the same group. McCabe was the only sprinter however to make that group, so even with the removal of Mogollon, it was still selective enough to put the hurt on.

There must have been a bit of a regroupment.

Now we know the full result we can see that this wasn't the case, they just got some of the names in the break wrong and omitted Narvaez.

Quote from: Jeff Louder
Rally just rode tempo to the finish. No one on their own felt strong enough to do something (against their four riders). Jonathan played it really smart. I told him to take his chance when he could. He was super patient and jumped with about 250 meters to go.

One other bit of news is that Chad Young crashed badly on a high speed descent. Got flown to hospital with severe facial injuries, but is in a stable condition.

It's kinda funny how they moved this race so that it would serve as prep for local teams in advance of California. The funny bit being that due to the WT changes the number of local teams riding both now only numbers three (and Rally are very much going with their b-team).

Start list is here (http://redlandsclassic.com/mens-roster/), but it's the usual suspects of NA teams with Mobius, who have hung around from Gila, being the exception.

There's more info on the race website (http://redlandsclassic.com/) about the stages, but here's the very short version:

Stage 1 - An up and down shortish TT. Nothing that steep 3-4%

Stage 2 - Six laps of a circuit and then a climb to the finish. This is the stage Kuss won last year, though it may not be exactly the same.

Stage 3 - Twenty laps of a short circuit. Two short, but steep climbs per lap.

Stage 4 - A 90 minute crit and unlike some of the crits we have seen so far this year, it is highly technical.

Stage 5 - Bit of a mish mash. They start on the crit course, switch to a loop which they do six times and then back onto the crit course for a few more laps.

.....and with UHC releasing their California line-up early, we can see that only Eaton, Daniel J and Mannion will ride both. So the move of race date will benefit only Jelly Belly (who might swap out a couple too) and three other riders. :lol

Competing teams (as of 11th May):

Équipe Canadienne

H & R Block
NCCH Elite p/b MGCC
Garneau Smart Savvy
CCB Velotooler
Vélo Sélect

Movistar Team Ecuador
Foundation Cycling
Garneau Québecor
Jelly Belly P/B Maxxis
Lowestrates
Aevolo Cycling
Canyon Bicycles Pro Cycling
Transport Lacombe/Devinci
Silber Pro Cycling
Keyi Look Cycling Team

Keyi Look is a bit leftfield. A Chinese team with quite a few Kazakh riders, but in the race's previous life as the Coupe des Nations Ville Saguenay it did have a Kazakh winner one year in Arman Kamyshev (beating a certain Julian Alaphilippe).

There were no plans (or budget or riders) for an Équipe Canadienne to ride Saguenay this year (Team RaceClean did in 2016) until MTB-er Léandre Bouchard expressed an interest in riding. Although retired from the organisational committee of GP Saguenay, it was Roger Filion who made a few phone calls and probably called in a few favours to get things sorted (money, cars, kit etc).

The team should be Bouchard, Boivin, Perry (if he can get a flight over from Europe), Cataford, Auclair and Piccoli.

:secretlol Ehm,,,yes,,,that goes to show how much I know about the place, so I try to make up with it by quting wikipedia....

In 2010, lyrics from the song began appearing spray-painted on vacant buildings and abandoned factories in the town of Saginaw, Michigan, which is mentioned in the song.[4] The group of artists, Paint Saginaw, decided to paint the phrases after the population had dwindled vastly, noting that the song became rather "homesick" for the town’s residents.[11] The song's entire lyrics are painted on 28 buildings in the city, including railroad tracks and bridge supports.[4]

The song was featured in "America", a television advertisement for the presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[15] The campaign sought permission to use it from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel themselves, who both agreed. Garfunkel stated that he was a supporter of Sanders and his campaign, and that the usage of "America" did not take away from the song's original premise.[16]

Back for three in a row? They had four of the top six last year, but only Roth remains from that quartet. Another name missing from the team is Kris Dahl (won a stage in Utah last year). He hasn't ridden a UCI race all year. At least he is still on the roster (on the UCI site), so it can't be another Drouin, but it's a mystery.

Stage 1  »  Saint-Georges - Saint-Georges (185km)

Same stage as last year when a tailwind helped the break make it (and proved the crucial stage in Daniel taking the overall).

Stage 2  »  Lac Megantic - Mont-Megantic (169km)

Stage 3a  »  Saint-Georges TT (19.4 km)

TT is in a different location, but spookily has virtually the same profile as last year. :woooo

Stage 3b  »   Saint-Georges - Saint-Georges (77km)

Stage 4  »  Quebec Criterium (70 km)

Stage 5  »  Saint-Georges Circuit (122.4 km)

Fun circuit to finish.

Quite a few of the teams that will ride Saguenay will be here too, but with the addition of the stronger US teams, the field here is definitely stronger.

Competing teams:

Novo Nordisk
UnitedHealthcare

Holowesko-Citadel
Axeon Hagens Berman

The (winning) break did not get away from the main peloton until 80 kilometres into the stage, with constant attacking and the high temperatures (32 Celcius) whittling down the field.

The speed and temperature saw 23 riders abandon or finish outside the time limit, with only 12 riders within a minute of the lead.  Defending champion Ryan Roth (Silber Pro Cycling) is over three minutes back, after his team was constantly put to the test trying to defend against the attacks. Roth was the only member of his team to finish ahead of the main bunch, nearly 17 minutes in arrears.

Team Canada manager Kevin Field commented, "This is actually a perfect situation for us. We said in our [team] meeting it would actually be better for us not to win today, but keep the game close. We lost Raph [Auclair] today as well, so defending with just three guys would have been hard. Now Canyon has the responsibility, which is good for us."

Field may think it's good, but we saw last year that in the same position Silber let the breaks stay away to the finish to mop up bonuses and Cycling Academy with a weakened team couldn't do much about it. My bet is that Mancebo will do what Roth did in 2016 and sneak away for the GC win.

A bit of an ouch day for Silber. Did they try to control it instead of being the aggressors themselves?

Stage one providing some guaranteed GC surprises as a break of 25 got away on a windy day and with most teams represented the gap just grew and grew and grew. The peloton finished over 25 minutes down! Any chance of winning had disappeared for *takes deep breath* De Vos, Cataford, Mancebo, Dal-Cin, Mannion, Fisher, Oliveira, Kuss, Ellsay, Tvetcov, Carpenter, Roth, and Eisenhart.

With so many big names out of the GC hunt, it wasn't a surprise that breaks were going to have a good chance in the rest of the race. Dal-Cin and Carpenter were the last men standing from a six man break and Carpenter couldn't follow 4km from the summit when the Canadian attacked. Kuss won from the peloton and Swirbul was the first of the riders who had been in the break from the day before.

Big performance from Cowan to give Silber their second stage win of the race and the yellow jersey. The poor weather conditions and even some gravel sections probably helped his cause.

https://youtu.be/gtcOj3Qxres

Gord was bullish about the team's chances of holding onto the jersey.

Another win for the break. Flaksis was the only vague GC threat involved and he grabbed a few seconds back.
Title: Re: Misc. American Tour Races 2017 (Tour de Beauce)
Post by: Leadbelly on June 19, 2017, 11:42

Cowan and Silber had a scare at the start of the stage when he crashed into barriers, luckily with it being a crit he could take a free lap while getting a bike change etc. That crash helped the break get established and it was Garrison who went one better than he did on the first stage and beat Carpenter to the line in a tight photo.

Big shake up on the final stage. Cowan was suffering after his crash the day before and despite his team's help he couldn't even hang on to the peloton, in fact they suffered the indignity of getting lapped by stage winner Britton.

Flaksis was the unlikely beneficiary of all this, he got away with a small chase group including team mate Carpenter and got enough time over Russo, Cheyne, Burke etc.

Stage 2  »  Skyliners TT (23.0km)

Stage 3  »  Cascade Lakes Road Race (172.7km)

Stage 4  »  Downtown Twilight Criterium (75 minutes)

Stage 5  »  Awbrey Butte Circuit Race (131.4km)

Here's the antidote to 200km of French countryside and a sprint. The Cascade Cycling Classic is the longest consecutively run elite stage race in the US and has attracted most of North America’s top cyclists and teams over the years.

Previous winners are Robin Carpenter, Dion Smith, Tvetcov, Mancebo, Sutherland, Sevilla, Leipheimer etc.

There are conflicting lists of which teams are actually starting. Do you believe the website (http://www.cascade-classic.org/race-info/participating-pro-teams/) or the tech guide (http://www.cascade-classic.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2017-CCC-Pro-Tech-Guide-V4.pdf)?

http://www.bendbulletin.com/sports/5438682-151/ccc-adjusts-as-a-uci-sanctioned-race

Quote
The level of professional competition at next week’s Cascade Cycling Classic could possibly be the best that cycling fans in Central Oregon have ever seen in the 38 editions of the event. For the first time, both the pro men’s and women’s races of the CCC are sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

But while the pro racing should be outstanding due in part to the UCI status, a side effect of that is the severe reduction of amateur races that have deep roots in the history of the Cascade. Most years, the CCC has included several amateur categories that race separately but cover many of the same courses as the pros, but this year, the Cascade will include just one amateur race, the Cat 2/3 Men, meaning many local cyclists are left unable to compete in their favorite race of the year.

Part of the reason for cutting the amateur races was a substantial decline in participation (a trend not only in the Northwest, but nationally) in those events over the past several years. Also, as traffic issues increase in Central Oregon, having fewer categories and fewer racers on the roads make organizing a UCI event much easier.

Going 2.2 has some knock-on effects.

The Mount Evans Hill Climb was raced yesterday. For those that don't remember, it finishes on the highest paved road for cars in the US (or so they say) topping out at 14130 ft (~4300m). The route is ~27 miles long and they gain ~7000ft.

/gm Chad Haga (only a couple of minutes or so down on Danielson's record)
/sm Keegan Swirbul
/bm Chris Butler

Mara Abbott won the women's event.

Rathe was the last to be caught with under 1km to go. From what I read there was a bit of a headwind at the finish, so that probably explains the relatively large group that came in together.

The good news is that Howes can't TT for toffee.

Eisenhart at ~6 minutes down, the only big loser.

Was it the Irish Nats where they pulled the women over so the men could go by? Well they didn't do that here at Cascade which is good, but unfortunately the passing point was in the final 500m of both races ........ I'll see if any footage emerges, but you can guess what happened.

https://twitter.com/GordFraser/status/889236659643875329

http://www.cascade-classic.org/carpenter-defends-cascade-title-in-chaotic-finish/

Bassett might have won the stage, but anyway Carpenter did enough and got some bonuses on the line to take the win. As I said above he's cool, calm, collected and we can probably add confident to that as well. He felt he could leave it to the final stage and the final few metres indeed, and he duly got his reward.

You might have heard in the build-up to this race of the brouhaha over the difference in prize money between the men's and women's events. Some local businesses and the sponsors stepped up to the plate to solve that for this year, but in all likelihood it means that this will just be a one year excursion back into UCI territory for the race.

Gord Fraser not happy at all especially since this isn't the first time this has happened at the race (something similar occurred in 2011 as well).

Quote
"They've had past experiences here, so they should a least have a better battle plan for this type of situation that could occur," Fraser told Cyclingnews. "I'm just shaking my head, and they're just shrugging their shoulders like it's not their fault, and it completely is."

"We invest a lot of money to come to Cascade ... and this is the kind of organisation we get?"

"I know [race director] Chad [Sperry] and everybody here is on the fence about having this race again, but honestly, if this is the type of product we get, we're never coming back."

Theater, in the middle of the prologue, this afternoon. The College of Commissioners announced that the prologue to the 67th Tour Cycliste de Guadeloupe was canceled.

As soon as the first starts, some riders complain. One after the other, or almost, they are sent back to their technical car, to make modifications to their bike.

The UCI regulations require that the bikes, for a time trial, respect precise dimensions. Now, they are several in breach.
Respecting the regulations to the letter, the president of the commissaires' panel, Isabel Maria Fernandes, refuses to take the start without the necessary adjustments.

Last-minute changes which cause the departure, late, for some and some movements of mood, in others. This is the case of Daniel Junon of Gwada Bikers 118, who openly "discusses" the decision of the International Commissioner. She then puts him out of the race. He is therefore excluded from the Tour cycliste.

A few minutes later, the same fate is reserved for Boris Carène (CCD), double winner of the Tour.

At the checkpoint, the spirits get hot ... The runners, the public (the crowd invaded the start line of the prologue) ... The tension rises ... The decision is therefore made to cancel the prologue.

They chickened out of their initial decision though and have reinstated Junon and Carene.

Sarabia and Buttner led the way for most of the stage, but with a large intermediate group of riders in between them and the peloton. The successful move came just after they were caught by the pursuers with Amores, Savickas, Almeida, Okubamariam and Tortelier going clear. The rest were hoovered up by the peloton.

On 126 kilometers with a circuit around Baie-Mahault, one would have thought that Zydrunas Savickas and his team from Bourg-en-Bresse would bring the yellow jersey back to the finish line. It has not happened !

The formation of the yellow jersey begins by letting leave an imposing group consisting essentially of boys not dangerous to the general, in search of a victory of prestige.

Zydrunas Savickas knows it will be attacked on all sides. And it is not disappointed ... In turn, Carène, Ubeto, Sablon, Murillo, Milan Jimenez and Carène. And it is Sébastien Fournet Fayard (+ Murillo and Ubeto) who takes advantage of all this fuss to escape.

They made the junction with the big leading group in which there were 2 other members of the DN1 formation.

And Savickas suddenly feels all alone. The help of his teammates, notably Simon Buttner, is not enough.

It's been a long time since we had some American Tour races and since the Tour do Rio won't be happening we'll have to wait a bit longer. That means the Tobago Cycling Classic will be next.

After that it should be the postponed Venezuela, but I can't see it happening. The non-UCI Vuelta a Tovar has now been moved to start on the 6th Oct which was the date Venezuela was meant to be starting, so signs aren't good.

Looks like the same course as in previous years and there is the usual 4 day TICC beforehand.

Unless you have been living under a rock you will know there have been several hurricanes causing much damage in the Caribbean recently. Tobago being right down near South America escaped the worst of it, but it has still had effects on the race. Teams from Guadeloupe, Cuba, Dominican Republic, St. Martin and Miami have all withdrawn.

The other negative for the race is "two major stakeholders of the event did not commit to support the event this year". This means they can't afford to hire ESPN to give us highlights of the UCI race and the four day TICC. No more Ronald Dickie! However there will still be streaming of the last two stages of the TICC via http://streamevents.tv/.

So a reduced line-up for the race. In fact there are only 10 teams registered for the Elite category of the TICC and I presume these will be the same teams for the UCI race, but with a few changes.

Teams registered so far:

Embrace The World

Micha Glowatzki (GER), Lucas Carstensen (GER), Christian Schumacher (GER), Denis Bojarkin (GER), Lauritz Urnauer (GER), Matthias Plattner (SUI)

RC Schwalben

Gero Hornberger (GER), Philipp Panni (GER), Paul Schuler (GER), Ken Tiltmann (GER)

Team Econo

Jose Luis Rivera (ARG), Jhoan Sabastian Caicedo (COL), Andres Camilo Pedroza (COL), Christian Torres (COL), Nicklas Amdi Pederson (DEN), Aria Kiani (USA), Ben Foster (USA)

Team Heatwave

Guy Costa (TTO), Enrique De Comarmond (TTO), Edwin Sutherland (BAR), Jamol Eastmond (BAR), Jesse Kelly (BAR), Gregory Vanderpool (BAR), Michael Anthony (GUY)

Team Jet Blue

Njisane Phillips (TTO), Lorenzo Orosco (TTO), Varum Maharajh (TTO), Jovian Gomez (TTO), Akil Campbell (TTO), Tyler Cole (TTO), Jyme Bridges (ANT), Romello Crawford (GUY)

Team Pharmaco

Emile Abraham (TTO), Ben Ren Kema (USA), Winston David (USA), Parker Kyser (USA), Jack Silverburg (USA), Corey Davis (USA), Raymauth Jeffrey (GUY)

Team Raiders

Adam Alexander (TTO), Joshua Alexander (TTO), Stalin Quieterio (Dom Rep), Rafael Meran (Dom Rep), Adderly Cruz (Dom Rep), Stalin Quiterio (Dom Rep), Dennis Ramirez (COL, Maximo Rojas (VEN), Marlies Mejias (CUB)

Team PSL

Arno Van Der Zwet (NED), Marloe Rodman (JAM), Nick Stöpler (NED), Twan Brusselman (NED), Peter Schulting (NED), Martin Kelderman (NED), Trevor Connor (USA), Alex Bhogal (CAN)

Team St. Vincent & the Grenadines

Trevor Zefal Bailey (SVG), Enroy Lewis (SVG), Samuel Lyttle (SVG), Andrew Norbert (LCA)

Team Veloclub Ratisbona

Marcel Weber (GER), Stephen Brandlmeier (GER), Christoph Setescak (GER), Johannes Glameyer (GER), Josef Schafbauer (GER), Jürgen Dietsche (GER), Robert Müller (GER)

I have highlighted a few names to watch out for. Carstensen has 15 UCI top-tens this year (including 5 wins). Rivera scored a couple of top-tens in the sprints in San Jaun. Pederson usually rides for Giant-Castelli and had a trio of top-tens at Sibiu this year. Phillips, Campbell and Cole are decent trackies. Emile Abraham has come out of retirement at the age of 43 to ride. Adderlyn Cruz is a previous winner of the UCI event. Mejias is a woman (a woman's team competed in one of the lower categories last year). Van der Zwet is the defending champion of the TICC and has some very strong Dutch riders in his team. Rodman is a good sprinter.

I highlighted the strength in depth of Team PSL and they dominated the 4 day TICC which ended yesterday.

Peter Schulting took stage one (http://www.trinbagowheelers.com/content/?p=2550) and then finished second on stage two (http://www.trinbagowheelers.com/content/?p=2556) behind Carstensen. Not sure who won stage three, but according to Embrace The World (https://www.facebook.com/EmbraceTheWorldCycling/posts/1365291676902692) it was Schulting's team who employed some "good and gruelling tactics" to ensure that Lucas was unable to contest for the win.

https://twitter.com/schultingpeter/status/914177468357062657

To round it off Marloe Rodman won the final stage and naturally Schulting won the points based GC.

The Dutchman has to be the favourite for today's UCI race (he probably had the best pedigree anyway coming into the race), but maybe Adderlyn Cruz can do something to upset the apple cart.

So far they have announced Canel's - Specialized and Memorial Santos. I have read elsewhere that Medellin and Virgen de Fátima could make the trip. Nothing so far about the Uruguayan entrant.

As for the local teams participating, they have had a series of 5 qualifying races through the year (Coppa Italia style) to find the cream of the crop. The ten teams who have made it are:

Stage 4  »  Colina - Farellones (124.3km)

http://www.bicyclingaustralia.com.au/destinations/vamos-cycling-in-chile

Quote
(Starting from Corral Quemado at 1300m) The road now starts to climb up the side of the mountains and the next 14.2 km is a big test of lungs and legs. There are 40 switch-backs, all individually numbered to count off as the road climbs skywards to a junction just before the ski town of Farellones. To reach here from the intersection near Corral Quemado the climb is almost exactly 1000m at an average of 7.1%. There is one flat section about halfway which provides an opportunity to recover but there are also several pinches of 10+%.

That's where the stage finishes, but they could have continued on up to 3000m with a further twenty hairpins to Valle Nevado.

Peter Tormen (57), the second Chilean to win the Vuelta de Chile, says that what happened on the podium on November 28, 1987, in the twilight of the military government of Augusto Pinochet, was a consequence of feelings that had been silenced for years , never something planned. After maintaining his advantage in the Cuesta Barriga - the penultimate stage of the race - and to get on the podium still wearing the leader knit, the journalists and the whole world gave it by winner of that edition. And so it was, there was no longer any doubt. He resisted stoically the attack of the Colombian Fabio Acevedo in the promotion, in the last opportunity to overcome it, reason why the question arrived like an obligation. "Who do you devote your triumph to, Peter?" They asked in front of the cameras and the audience. "To my brother Sergio, detained missing," he replied. The rest is known history.

Eddy's your man for Uruguayan cycling news.

One name springs out from the local teams and that is Marco Arriagada. He won San Luis and the Vuelta de Chile in 2011, but got busted later on that year. Matias Arriagada on the same team is his nephew.

Some other names to watch out for include Almonacid (the defending champ), Garrido (the non-italic winner from 2011), Tello and Alvarado.

Riders that won't be appearing include Mansilla x 2, Lobito Burmann (busted), Edison Bravo (busted) and most surprisingly Rodriguez (he's signed for SEP San Juan).

Make that five (!) riders riding for four different teams. All Chilean.

Carlos Riveros (KMC Kilómetro Cero)
Martín Westermayer (Regional Talca)
Jaime Marchant (Quinta Normal)
Nicodemus Verdugo (Quinta Normal)
Edwards Fuentes (Chile España San Fernando)

There was no mention of the car in the communications (even though they could see the licence plate) so it can't have been a team car. Who did it belong to then?

Not the most positive images anyway to accompany the return of the race.
