Title: Youth CQ Ranking Game 2017
Post by: Flo on December 30, 2016, 10:28
Youth CQ Ranking Game 2017

Hello fellow Veloroomies, welcome to the fifth annual Youth CQ Ranking Manager Game. This game allows you to showcase your knowledge of upcoming youngsters, and hopefully take a gamble on a couple of really young riders.
Originally this game was invented by mc_mountain, based on Hugo Koblet's CQ Ranking Manager Game, but I am organizing it this year.

Your task is to create a team with 12-15 riders at 1000 CQ points to get the best possible return.

1. How the game works

1.1. Duration
The season starts when the first race is held (Australian Road Cycling Championships ITT 5 January 2017) and ends when the last major race (.1 or higher) is held. The winner will be crowned when the next update after the last major race (x.1) is out - submissions can be made to extend the season to include late season smaller races, should there be potential for them to affect the top placings. A victor can be declared earlier if there is no prospect of the leader being overhauled.

1.2. Updates
My aim is to have an update every 2 weeks. I would greatly appreciate some help from other participants. If you are interested in doing an update every now and then, let me know via PM!  :)

2. On doping
Hopefully doping will have much less of an impact on this game, but the Main game rules will apply.

3.Submitting your team

3.1. How do I?
You pick between 12 and 15 riders whose combined value doesn’t exceed 1000 points and submit your team to me via PM (either on CN forum or on Velorooms forum). Please be sure to use the naming format as found on cqranking.com and only send me your riders' names, not their scores etc.

3.2. Eligibility
Riders need to fit one of the following two main criteria
i) be a first year professional rider (of any age), be it at World Tour or Professional Continental team.
ii) be riding at Continental level or lower, born in 1992 or younger, without having previously ridden as a professional.

For clarity, riders should not have already ridden a full year as a professional at either World Tour or Professional Continental level – riding as a stagiaire does not prevent selection. Riders who have signed their first pro contract in August (or later), are considered for the purposes of this game as no different from stagiaire riders.

Players of the game are encouraged to include at least two riders from 1995 or younger who will ride at ProConti level (ie eligible for u23 world champs) or lower and one rider from 1995 or younger who will ride at Continental level or lower (ie will be riding x.2, x.2u, x.NC races). NB: this is entirely voluntary, no additional points can be scored by following up on this encouragement and neither will points be deducted for those who do not follow up on it, nor is this seen as cheating.

If you are unsure about the eligibility of a rider, feel free to PM me.

Deadline
You can submit your team as of right now. The deadline for submission is January 3rd, 16:00 CET (http://www.timebie.com/timelocal/centraleuropean.php). After this deadline, team submissions will no longer be accepted. I will then process the teams, which includes checking eligibility. If I encounter an issue with your team, e.g. you've included the same rider twice, you are over budget or a rider you selected is not eligible, I will contact you via PM and give you the opportunity to correct the mistake before January 4th 23:00 CET. If after this deadline, you haven't yet gotten back to me, or there is still an issue with your team, I will:
i) in case you are over the budget, remove a rider to bring you under the budget. This will be the cheapest available rider on your team whose removal will bring you to or under the budget;
ii) in case you selected too many riders, remove the cheapest available rider from your team;
iii) in case of ineligibility, remove the ineligible rider.

I would like to ask the participants to delay the big reveal of their teams until after the January 4th deadline.

I think I might have asked the same thing last year. but if a rider has been a stagiare twice, is he allowed?

Not the case in terms of anyone I am considering (or anyone at all, as far as I am aware), but what if three or more stagiare contracts have been undertaken?

I don't see why not.
They haven't been on the roster of any pro team in the period January-July before, so even multiple stagiaire deals shouldn't be a hindrance.

Yes, riders who have only raced for pro teams as a stagiaire are an exception to the rule, no matter how many times :)

Players of the game are encouraged to include at least two riders from 1994 or younger who will ride at ProConti level (ie eligible for u23 world champs) or lower and one rider from 1994 or younger who will ride at Continental level or lower (ie will be riding x.2, x.2u, x.NC races). Just FYI, the U23 cut-off for 2017 is "born on 01/01/1995 or later" - riders from 1994 aren't U23 anymore.

You're right - I had already changed the date but turns out I didn't change it last year :fp

FYI: this isn't a requirement, it's just an encouragement. So it doesn't matter much :)

Hello everyone!

Last day to get your team in, after the deadline I will do one last check, please don't post your teams immediately because I want to give people who send their teams in just before the deadline the opportunity to correct possible mistakes in their lineups :)

We have 36 entrants so far and I'm waiting for a couple more to get back to me with replacements/amendments, so we should definitely break 40. I've listed all accepted teams in the 2nd post of this thread, if you sent in a team, please check to see if your name is in this list, if not, send me a PM just to be sure. NB this list does not include those who've sent in a team with ineligible riders.

Okay, folks, here is the spreadsheet (http://www.mediafire.com/file/5j4a1h53fwz4of7/2017+CQYouth+spreadsheet+final.xls). We have 46 teams this year :cool

Nice to see that some people gambled with a big-points rider. Rudy Barbier and Kristoffer Halvorsen are both on 2 teams, despite eating up over 1/3rd of the budget. Adrien Costa isn't exactly cheap either at 274 points, but he managed to find his way onto 8 teams. Murrjt even paired him up with Iranian Amir Kolahdouz (also 274 points), who is an unique pick for him for the 2nd year in succession.
The dubious honour of craziest pick goes to Squire though, who spent 915(!!) points on Timothy Dupont. A bold move, let's see if it pays off :)

Last year, we had Gaviria as the most popular rider who was on 4/5th of all teams. He ended up being a great pick - wisdom of the crowd :) We don't have a rider as popular this year, although Doull comes close, with 33 picks. As he is very cheap, he could definitely end up a great pick.
I thought it was interesting to see Gaudu so high up, considering his price tag is quite large and as a 20-year old on a WT team... I picked him as well, though ;)

Riders picked 10 or more times (for more data, check the spreadsheet)

Looking at this ranking, the most popular team you'd be able to get would be the following. It consists of the 14 most popular riders, choosing Cavagna over Powless for budgetary reasons, with McNulty as a zero-pointer for the 15th spot.

Let's be clear he still could turn a decent profit in 2017. The question is what races will he ride, or to put it another way, which team will he ride for?

Big points are available at California, but will CT teams be allowed to ride? Unlikely, so he would have to rely on getting picked for a US National team.....just one problem, he could be riding the Baby Giro with Axeon which overlaps with the new WT event.

There are the three other big US scoring opportunities in August, but I can only see him riding Utah again (assuming a potential stagiaire team doesn't have other plans). The Commonwealth Cycling Classic overlaps with l'Avenir anyway and to my mind a racing block of Utah, Colorado and l'Avenir is too much.

On the plus side l'Avenir will reward more points this year and he could pick up other points with a favourable stagiaire role, but I think there's too many questions to take an expensive risk.

Having riders who actually score points is SO mainstream.
You're identifying trends ahead of time, and then seeing the profits go to others. In short, you're the archetypal inventor! :D

Update 1: Miles Ahead of the Competition (Yes, I shamelessly stole that pun from skidmark :D )

First update of the season and I'm pleased to report the spreadsheet appears to be working as it should :) We've had one WorldTour event already but interestingly most points were scored at the Australian Nationals, by Miles Scotson. The 8 who have selected him must be very content as he has already almost tripled his cost.
At the Tour Down Under, we also saw several good performances by our youngsters, most notably Ruben Guerreiro who finished 7th on stage 2 and 18th overall, scoring 28 points. Top scorer after these two weeks is yours truly (no it's not a fix :P ). It was a bit of a surprise as I only had Scotson, Guerreiro, Enric Mas (10 points) and Lennard Hofstede (5 points), but looking into it I realized Scotson, Guerreiro and Hofstede are quite rare picks which explains it :) 2nd placed GP Blanco only missed Hofstede from my list of riders, and third placed just some guy combined points from Scotson, Ondrej Cink (18 points) and unique pick Lucas Hamilton (12 points). Looking further down, the best team without Scotson is Ludwigzgz, who scored with Guerreiro, Cink and Mas.

As this is just the first update, we don't have a highest movers ranking and the overall ranking is the same as the highest scorers

Two people have offered to help out with updates but it would be greatly appreciated if more were to step forward, we're looking at 20-something updates in total so even if you could do just one or two it would help immensely :)
Also, I've decided to leave out the monthly rankings this year, because we only have an update once every two weeks I feel they don't add much.

Update 2: Minali shines bright in Dubai

We're two weeks further into the season and most of us have started accumulating points, all but two are out of the starting blocks and on their way to a possible win in this year's edition of the game. This week's most notable performance is that of Riccardo Minali in Dubai, in the stellar sprinting field at the Dubai Tour he managed to sprint to top-15's on all stages; place 13,8 and 5, respectively, in the first three stages, but even more impressively he got himself into the top-3 on stage 5, behind Kittel and Viviani and in front of big names like Cavendish, Degenkolb and Groenewegen. This result, with the additional bonus seconds gained, earned him 7th overall, much to the delight of 20 of our participants :) Thanks to him, we scored well across the board, but to really stand out you needed something special on top of those points. This update's highest scorer, DJW, definitely had that with decently sized batches of points from Tao Geoghegan Hart and Jonathan Dibben, as well as some minor points from several other riders. Second highest scorer just some guy didn't have as many point-scoring machines but he has a secret weapon, his unique pick Lucas Hamilton who scored 62 points in Australia since the last update and is now into profit. It seems unlikely that just some guy, a very passionate but not always very successful participant in cycling games  ;) , will ever forget about Hamilton because he earned him his (I believe) very first 1st place in the overall rankings of the Youth CQ ranking game, ever! Racing for a Chinese team, Hamilton could definitely score big in some of the Asian races later on in the season, which could make him a very important pick in the long run as well.
MADRAZO already had a good start but, with the 3rd highest score this update, moved up to 2nd overall, thanks to Minali and Dibben and some minor scorers.
Interestingly most of the high scorers had Minali, except for Josedin who got most of his points from Mads Würtz Schmidt's impressive third place in Etoile de Bessèges, a promising start for a rather expensive rider. This performance allows Josedin to move up 30 spots in the rankings, which makes him the highest mover.
Overall, just some guy (as mentioned) climbs two spots into 1st, with MADRAZO moving up to 2nd as I drop down to 3rd. Looking a bit further down, most notable is al_pacino's leap from 32nd to 9th, but in this stage of the game we always see quite a lot of movement as the scores are still low.

Update 3: Örken scores for snccdcno as Cink shines

The last two weeks have been quite uneventful for our game, which is slightly surprising considering the big number of points available with all the x.HC races. The most interesting performance this week was definitely that of Ondrej Cink, who showed big promise in Ruta del Sol and finished top-10 on GC in a stellar field. The 13 participants who picked him will have followed his efforts with great interest but I am sure even those who didn't pick him - me included - were very impressed by his showing.
Points were scarce - only those with Cink managed to score 50 points or more. Interestingly, many of the highest scorers were quite a way down in the rankings, which means their names also feature prominently in the highest movers list. The highest scorer, snccdcno, had already had a good start to the game though and solidifies his position in the top-10 overall, moving up to 7th. He got a nice number of points from unique pick Ahmet Örken, who fired it up in Morocco. On top of that he also scored a combined 10 points with Enric Mas and Andrea Vendrame. 2nd-placed and highest mover Pantani1, who managed to select a staggering 8 unique picks, saw that strategy pay off with 8 points for Michael Schlegel, 5 points for Kevin Deltombe and most importantly 22 points for Dan Pearson. 3rd-placed Kryvo collected points with Cink, Ryan Gibbons, Mas and an Eritrean with the most unpronounceable name ever which I'm just going to shamelessly copy: Amanuel Egerzeigzaarkha GEBREIGZABHIER .

Overall, the top-3 remains the same, but we see quite a lot of movement in the lower regions of the top-10. Laarsland has closed in on the podium and Squire moves into the top-10. Torcia_86, DJW and del1962 all drop a bit but only al_pacino was unfortunate enough to drop out of the top-10. Meanwhile, just a hair away from 10th, is AupaPyama, who moved up 10 spots to 11th overall.

Gonna spend all year annoyed I didn't pick Cink for at least one of my teams. Put Gibbons in my Emerging team but not in this one, should pick up lots of points at Langkawi this week

Not a bad start, my biggest problem could be the anti-doping trolls going after the team of my joint most expensive pick.

Update 4 - Gibbons conquers his Inner Chimp

What an update, ladies and gents. Marty completely blasts away everyone else with a massive 502 points. To put that into context, just some guy, who was first overall in the last update, had collected 354 points up to that point! Definitely, the most impressive performance in the past 2 weeks goes to Ryan Gibbons, who scored 276 points at the Tour of Langkawi. You read that right, 276, that's more than winning Paris-Nice would earn you! He added to the 160 points for the overall win with top-5's on several stages, including one win, and he scored a load of points for leading the race from stage 2 to 8 as well. Only 4 of us selected Gibbons and they are - naturally - the 4 highest scorers in this update. Personally, I thought he was a promising sprinter which is why I picked him, but I never, ever expected this!
But let's focus on marty for a bit. Besides Gibbons' 276 points, he also scored 89 with Richard Carapaz, 65 with Logan Owen and 28 with Jhonatan Narvaez. On top of that, Chris Lawless, Aldemar Reyes and Ondrej Cink scored a combined 44 points as well.  So this definitely isn't just a case of one lucky pick! 2nd highest scorer was Kryvo who also scored highly in the previous update, and, let's look at what Kryvo posted after that update:
Quote from: Kryvo (http://forum.cyclingnews.com/viewtopic.php?p=2067963#p2067963)
And today is time for "Zemenfes Solomon". Go Go Go!
He added to Gibbons' points with, amongst others, points from Adrien Costa, Cink and - you guessed it - Zemenfes Solomon! 25, to be exact  :D
The other two with Gibbons, togo95 and me, both scored points with Maximillian Schachmann and got minor points from a handful of other riders.
"Best of the rest", shawnm4747 did well to match Gibbons score without selecting him. He got most of his points from Carapaz, Owen, Narvaez and Eddie Dunbar. Also very impressive!

Such big scores obviously create big shifts in the ranking. We see both marty and togo95 climb over 30 spots, marty even moves up to 2nd overall, while togo95 remains just outside the top-10 for now, in 11th place. 3rd highest mover was LukasCPH, who moved up 29 spots. Kryvo and shawnm4747 also feature in this list and they both move into the top-10, Kryvo into 3rd, shawnm4747 into 10th. Big jumps are almost always accompanied by big drops, so spare a thought for poor torcia_86 who drops from 6th to 24th.
In the overall ranking we also see some smaller movements, I move into 1st place as just some guy drops to 6th. AupaPyama moves into the top-10 and keep an eye on snccdcno, who has been quietly sneaking up in the rankings and is now just besides the podium. DJW, del1962 and Squire all drop out of the top-10.

Update 5: marty is on a roll!

For the 2nd update in a row, marty delivers a stellar performance. His score isn't as stratospheric this time, but he's still comfortably the highest scorer. Most of his points came from Kristoffer Halvorsen, who impressed by winning the Handzame Classic. Halvorsen, one of the most expensive picks in the game at 336 points, was only picked by one other participant, by Slapshot. Halvorsen still has quite a way to go before he turns into a good pick, but this was definitely a promising performance. Other points for marty came from Edward Planckaert and Andrea Vendrame. Slapshot only had Halvorsen and Planckaert, but that was enough to earn him 2nd place in this update. 3rd place goes to torcia_86, who scored with Planckaert, Vendrame and rare pick Frantisek Sisr.

The title of highest mover also goes to torcia_86, they climbed 12 spots into 12th place. Tych23, the only other person with Sisr, was the 2nd highest mover. Allobroges, one of last year's main contenders, completes the top-3 in this ranking.

Overall, we see that marty pushed me down to 2nd and is now our new leader. We see some other minor movements, snccdcno, just some guy and GP Blanco all drop some spots while MADRAZO and laarsland move up. togo95 in 8th is the only new name in the top-10, shawnm4747 is the unlucky one who drops out.

We see that after 5 updates, which means 10 weeks, no one from 3rd place down has a total score that matches marty's score from the previous update yet. Interesting! :)  (and made me do a double-check ;) )

Update 6

I don't have much inspiration for this update so don't expect anything besides the facts :P
Many of the high scorers in this update had the Simone Consonni - David Gaudu combo: Consonni scored 55 points, Gaudu scored 45 points. LukasCPH had those 2 but also scored major points with Justin Jules (50), Eddie Dunbar (20) and unique pick Elmar Reinders (15). He is the highest scorer this update and also one of the highest movers, climbing to 8th place.
2nd highest scorer del1962 also scored with Gaudu, Consonni and Dunbar and added points from unique pick Fabian Lienhard, amongst others. He is also among the highest movers, moving up 6 spots.
3rd highest scorer CraZyCaLL had Gaudu, Consonni and Neilson Powless score big points.
Highest mover this update, climbing 7 spots, was LosBrolin who scored with (again) Consonni and Gaudu, but also with Ivan Garcia Cortina and Nans Peters. LukasCPH and del1962 share the 2nd place in this ranking with Pentacycle, who doesn't have Consonni but he got a big chunk of his points from Gaudu and scored minor points with several others.

Overall, we see that MADRAZO pushes Kryvo from the podium. Marty continues in 1st place. LukasCPH and shawnm4747 enter the top-10 while GP Blanco and AupaPyama drop out.

Update 7: Lecroq's a hit.

We have a tie atop the rankings this update between CraZyCaLL and AupaPyama with Tych23 rounding off the podium. The top two are the only ones to have selected Jeremy Lecroq and that paid dividends as they got just about half of their points from his three top ten placings over the last fortnight (RvV Beloften, GP de Denain and ZLM - Roompot Tour). CraZyCaLL backed that up due to an impressive performance from Enric Mas in Pais Vasco as well as a top ten in Tour du Finistere from David Gaudu whilst AupaPyama got most of their other points from Rudy Barbier, in particular his sixth in Scheldeprijs.

This weeks highest mover is the previously mentioned Tych23 they had a number of contributing riders, most notably Mas, Nick Schultz and Jhonatan Narvaez, Roubaix had a couple of those plus Christopher Lawless, Trudgin got a chunk of her points thanks to rare pick (and Italian  :o) Fausto Masnada's top ten in Giro dell'Appennino.

No change in the order of the top three although LaFlorecita has slightly closed the gap on marty. Both of the highest scorers also jump into the top ten along with GP Blanco, the three to drop out are LukasCPH, togo95 and yours truly.

Worth noting that the CQ download was posted with only the top three of Giro Belvedere di Villa di Cordignano counted so if you notice some points that you were expecting not included that is why and they will be taken care of in the next update!

Update 8: Gaudu shines brightly

This update's most notable performance has to be David Gaudu's 9th place at the Flèche Wallonne, which scored him over 50 points. The result in and of itself is great, but what was even more impressive was the way he rode, attacking on Huy while others chose to wait and ride into the final 200 meters with Valverde. He was a rather expensive pick, but that didn't deter many from picking him, he is one of the most popular picks.
Highest scorer in this update is yours truly :) with points from amongst others rather popular picks Gaudu, Maximilian Schachmann (38 points) and Riccardo Minali (15 points), but most importantly also 40 points from Lennard Hofstede.
2nd highest scorer just some guy also scored with Gaudu, Schachmann and Minali as well as Neilson Powless (20 points) and most notably 27 points from unique pick Lucas Hamilton. Hamilton was 40 points and has already quadrupled his score  :o
3rd highest scorer CraZyCaLL scored with the above-mentioned Gaudu, Schachmann, Powless and Minali and also got minor points from Guerreiro and Consonni.

Joint highest mover LosBrolin, who moved up 8 spots, got most of his points from Gaudu, Hofstede and Minali and got minor points from half a dozen others. The other highest mover, Pentacycle, scored with, besides some of the usual suspects, with unique pick Riabushenko (19 points) and rare pick Fabio Jakobsen, who seems like a great prospect. I will definitely keep an eye on him for future editions of this game ;)
Tych23, who moved up 7 spots, didn't pick Gaudu, interestingly enough. Instead, he scored big with rare pick Hofstede and he got a whopping 50 points from unique pick Mark Christian!

Overall, we see that I move into 1st place, as marty's team had an underwhelming two weeks. Just some guy moves up three spots onto the podium, while CraZyCaLL moves up three spots into 4th. LukasCPH enters the top-10, AupaPyama drops down to 11th.

Update 9: Colombian domination

I was quite surprised when I checked out the scores for this update, somehow several Colombians scored major points and this completely went past me :P This all happened in the Vuelta a Madrid. Hakkie2 is the highest scorer, with big points from Carapaz (50), Reyes (46) and uncommon pick Aguirre (60). He also scored 65 points with Vendrame. It's a pretty impressive total score and with those points, he is also the (joint) highest mover, moving up 13 positions, into 5th overall!

Marty, who was in 2nd place before this update, is the 2nd highest scorer, with points from Vendrame, Reyes and Carapaz as well, and also 44 points from José Manuel Diaz - who? :D , nice pick, 0-pointer, only 1 other player found him as well, just some guy :cool Thanks to marty's good week, he moves into 1st place overall again :)

3rd highest scorer is fauniera, he scored with Vendrame, Aguirre and Carapaz and is also among the highest movers.

Joint highest mover is last year's #2, allobroges, who had an underwhelming start this year after leading the rankings for most of last year. He scored with Vendrame, Reyes and also with almost-unique pick Fabio Jakobsen (30 points). Will this be the start of his comeback?

3rd highest mover is Armchair Cyclist, climbing 8 positions, main scorers for him were Vendrame and Carapaz as well.

Overall, as I already mentioned, marty moves into first place again, while Hakkie2 enters the top-10 as well as last year's winner Wallenquist and snccdcno, the unfortunate three that dropped out are GP Blanco, MADRAZO and Kryvo.

Update 10: Big scores across the board

We saw some big performances by young riders in the past 2 weeks, and although I haven't checked, I wouldn't be surprised it this was one of the highest scores in a Youth game update ever. The top-10 all scored 250 or more points. I was the highest scorer with just over 400 points :) . A big part of my score came from Remi Cavagna (136) and Ruben Guerreiro (70), thanks to their top-10 results at the Belgium Tour. I also scored points with amongst others Gaudu (48), Schachmann (29) and Mas (30). Guerreiro is quite a rare pick with only 4 picks, but I was also happy to see my other rarest picks pick up some points, Hofstede, Insausti and Gibbons.

2nd highest scorer DJW also had Cavagna and Guerreiro, but also rare pick Tao Geoghegan Hart, who scored 65 points in California. With his big score, DJW is also the highest mover, climbing 13 places. He is now in 13th place. 3rd highest scorer GP Blanco did not select Cavagna, but scored significant points with many of his riders, like Guerreiro, rare pick Schultz (62), Carapaz (59) and Gaudu. He moves 7 places and jumps back into the top-10.

As mentioned DJW was the highest mover, joint 2nd are Kazistuta and scrooll07, climbing 10 places. Kazistuta's major scorers were Cavagna, Carapaz and Gaudu and he moves into the top-10. Scrooll07 got a big part of his points from Cavagna and Geoghegan Hart.

Overall, I move back into first place at the expense of marty. Thanks to the big scores in this update, we see 4 people make a big leap into the top-10 :o : GP Blanco, fauniera, Kazistuta and al_pacino. Last year's winner Wallenquist, shawn4747, LukasCPH and snccdcno drop out of the top-10 but all are within 50 points of 10th place so can easily jump back in next update.

Update 11: MVDP is MVP

An interesting update in which we have not one but TWO highest scorers, DJW and snccdcno. Let's just say this is their reward for helping me out from time to time with updates - Karma is real :)
Both have the highest scoring rider on their team, in fact the entire top 8 have him: Mathieu van der Poel, who, besides beating Gilbert in a sprint at the Tour of Belgium to win a stage and winning 2 stages and GC at the Boucles de la Mayenne (and finishing 2nd and 3rd on the other 2 stages), also casually finished 2nd in the Albstadt MTB race, behind the World champion. Certainly an impressive feat and it is quite astonishing that "only" 8 people picked him when he cost just 38 points. A massive bargain (although I did not pick him :D ), with his 171 points scored in the last two weeks he turned himself into a great pick in an instant.
snccdcno also scored big points with Andrea Vendrame, who also scored at the Boucles de la Mayenne, and Owain Doull. DJW saw his British picks Doull, Dibben and Geoghegan Hart each grab a nice chunk of points. DJW and snccdcno also both feature in the top-5 highest movers, in 5th and 3rd position, respectively, and they moved into 5th and 6th overall.
3rd highest scorer is togo95, who is just 4 measly points away from the two best scorers. Besides Van der Poel, he also scored big with Vendrame and Malucelli. Togo95 is also the 2nd highest mover, jumping 12 spots into 10th place.

Our highest mover is Pantani1, climbing the rankings like his namesake climbed the mountains. Pantani1 must be very happy, because 4 of his 8 unique picks scored points in this update! Most importantly, Krists Neilands scored 45 and Michal Schlegel 28, and of course Pantani1 also selected Van der Poel.
Joint 3rd highest mover, with snccdcno, is Ludwigzgz. He is last of the people with Van der Poel in this update, but those points, plus 29 for Doull and a few handful of points for others still help him move up a big 10 positions. :)

Overall, I am still the leader with marty in 2nd. However, we see that Hakkie2 jumps to 3rd, pushing CraZyCaLL from the podium. In the lower regions of the top-10, we also see Kryvo climb 8 spots to 9th position. Laarsland, Kazistuta, just some guy and al_pacino will be licking their wounds after falling out of the top-10, they are now in positions 11 to 14.

Update 12: Nats the way to do it!

A fairly busy couple of weeks with the Tour de Suisse and Route du Sud finishing, but more importantly a huge line-up of road nats ITTs and RRs which some young riders did very well in.

Maximilian Schachmann is the star performer with over 100 points at the *de Nats. Ruben Guerreiro also cropped up with an excellent *pt RR win, while Tao Geoghegan Hart picked up points at the Tour de Suisse and Caraoaz got a strong result at Route du Sud.

Upcoming stars including Neilson Powless, Ravasi, Jon Dibben, Barbier, Cavagna and Kilian Frankiny also picked up a few points at Nats.

Also don't forget the baby Giro won by Pavel Sivakov (with Powless picking up a few points). That GC is sure to include a few good tips for next year (shame there aren't more CQ points on offer)

LaFlorecita   254
togo95            248
MADRAZO             243

A huge score for CraZyCaLL who picked up big points from Schachmann and Carapaz as well as good returns from Powless and Guerreiro.

snccdcno, togo95 and I have had good weeks again in part due to MVdP. snccdcno also had Schachmann and Carapaz, togo95 had Schachmann and Powless, and I had Powless and a high scoring rare pick in Tao Geoghegan Hart.

Most of the top 10 had some combination of those riders. Special mention to Armchair Cyclist who got points from baby Giro winner Sivakov and unique pick Truls Engen Korsaeth.

CraZyCaLL   jumps onto the podium and closes the gap to LaFlorecita who is still a little ways out in front. I've closed the gap to the podium to only 1 point. laarsland and JSG have jumped up in to the top 10, replacing Kryvo and togo95.

Update 13: Slow weeks

While we're all no doubt enjoying this thrilling flat sprint stage at the Tour, it's time for me to look at what's happened in the youth ranks in the last two weeks. Unfortunately, it seems it was as interesting as the majority of this TDF so far :) But, the low scores aren't too surprising, in the week between the Nationals and the Tour there are hardly any races and the Tour isn't really the best place for a young rider to show his promise.
Highest scorer in this update is Tych23, thanks to unique pick Taco van der Hoorn scoring 56 points. He beats marty by just a few points. His other scorers were Edward Planckaert (36) and Martijn Tusveld (28). With this score, he is also the highest mover, climbing 6 spots.
2nd highest scorer marty has Planckaert as well and also scored with rare picks Christopher Lawless (40) and Christopher Latham (36). He also adds a minor 5 points from Ryan Gibbons. Marty performed much better than the rest of the top-10 and is rewarded with a small step (won't call it a jump :) ) from 3rd to 2nd overall.
3rd highest scorer Nicosix had only two riders score points for him, Planckaert and Ben O'Connor, who scored a big 70 points for his great performance in the Tour of Austria. Only two others selected him, and they are 4th and 5th in this update, rote_lanterne and comodoro.
We don't see much movement. As was already said, Tych23 climbs 6 spots, and we also see Nicosix climb 4 spots. rote_lanterne and allobroges are joint 3rd highest mover, moving up 3 spots.
Also in the top-10, there aren't any major changes. CraZyCaLL and marty switch places in the top-3 while I am still 1st. snccdcno pushes both DJW and Hakkie2 down a spot. Interestingly, numbers 5 to 10 scored 0 points in this update! This must be one of the rare occasions that we see the rest of the ranking outperform the top-10 :P

Update 14: search annihilates the competition

For most of us the past two weeks in this game were pretty uneventful, but not for search. With his unique picks Wout van Aert and Dusan Rajovic he scored a whopping 128 points, and with additional points from Justin Jules and Jacopo Mosca, his total score is 170. This is more than double the score of this update's 2nd highest scorer, Armchair Cyclist, who scored with Pavel Sivakov in the Giro delle Valle d'Aosta, Andrea Vendrame and also with Elie Gesbert, one of the few riders in this game that was present at the Tour - and finished as well! For this he scored 20 points and Gesbert also got 5 points for his 7th place on stage 19.
Joint 3rd highest scorers are snccdcno and Kryvo. Kryvo got 25 points from Gesbert and 25 points from Mosca, snccdcno got most of his points from unique pick Ahmet Örken.

This update sees very little movement, only 9 people moved up at all and only 2 more than 1 spot. Search is naturally the highest mover with his big score, he jumps 10 spots. 2nd highest mover is Roubaix, who scored with Sivakov and Rémi Cavagna and moves up 3 spots. Then, we have 7 people moving up 1 spot.

In the overall ranking, no changes :D everything stays as it was 2 weeks ago.

Update 15: Strong performances in Spain and the US for Roubaix

This update is one of the higher scoring ones of the year as Roubaix gets big points from Enric Mas (155) finishing second in Burgos and Neilson Powless (94) who finished fourth in Utah, that was supplemented with points from Aldemar Reyes (34) and Jhonatan Narvaez (22) among others. In second place is CraZyCaLL who had a few of the same riders (Mas, Powless and Reyes) they also had Hernan Aguirre (27) and Richard Carapaz (24), there was only one point between them and the many minor points scorers Roubaix had made the difference as they only had three riders not picking up any points this update.

Rounding out the podium this time is Pantani1 who had the winner of Dwars door het Hageland, Mathieu van der Poel's win netted them 80 points, they also had a few impressive performers in Utah with 9th placed Sepp Kuss (a unique pick) who also finished runner up on stage 2, Taylor Eisenhart who came 11th and the aforementioned Powless.

Pantani1 is the joint highest mover alongside postmanhat with Roubaix in third. A lot of the riders already mentioned are the reason why these three have moved up this time.

CraZyCaLL has taken over at the top of the standings from LaFlorecita who drops to second, rounding out the podium is me after I came 5th this week, only 67 points separate the top three. Hakkie2 who had a very good fortnight is up a couple of places into fourth. Two new entries into the top ten with rote_lanterne and Kryvo, the unlucky two to drop out are JSG and laarsland who has dropped 8 places. Just over 75% of the teams scored triple figures this update.

Update 16: Allez les Bleus

Hi all, sorry for the late update, I lost track of the weeks. Very interesting results in this update, with the highest scorer, Hakkie2, scoring over 300(!) points. This is mainly thanks to two French riders, David Gaudu (100) and Elie Gesbert (118), both scored over 100 points in the last 2 weeks. Hakkie2 also scored with Edward Ravasi (34), Simone Consonni (25) and Mathieu van der Poel (16). With his big score, he moves into 1st position overall!

2nd highest scorer Kazistuta scored with Gaudu, Gesbert and Ravasi and got minor points from around half a dozen riders. He moves up 6 spots into 13th place, which makes him the highest mover in this update.
LosBrolin combined points from Gaudu, Gesbert and Consonni to become 3rd highest scorer.

Interestingly, Pantani1, 4th highest scorer just 1 point away from 3rd, doesn't have either Gaudu or Gesbert. Many of his unique picks scored big points, most notably Taylor Eisenhart (107), Sepp Kuss (68), Krists Neilands (33) and Michal Schlegel (31). Pantani1's team is the most unique team of all, but he's still 11th overall! Definitely really impressive!

Joint 2nd highest scorers LukasCPH, skidmark and Leadbelly all move up 5 spots. LukasCPH scored with Gaudu, Justin Jules (40) and unique pick Kasper Asgreen (38), skidmark with Gaudu, Ravasi and Consonni and Leadbelly with Gaudu and unique picks Travis McCabe (84) and Mihkel Räim (25).

Overall, as I mentioned, Hakkie2 takes over the lead, jumping from 4th place. Kryvo and rote_lanterne both jump 3 spots, fauniera moves up 1 spot.

Highest scorers

(From Flo really, but posted in the wrong thread: I suspect she has been celebrating)

Update 17: Consonni comes of age

To achieve a high placing in this update, two things were crucial: to have Consonni and to have some rare riders with high scores as well. Around half of the participants selected Simone Consonni, who scored 115 points, thanks to top-10s in the WT GP Ouest-France and HC GP Fourmies. Great results for this talented sprinter :) . Highest scorer Ludwigzgz had of course Consonni, as well as (amongst others) rare picks Amund Jansen (94 points) and Ruben Guerreiro (76 points), and Owain Doull (45 points). With his very high score, Ludwigzgz is also the highest mover, he moves up 10 spots to 12th place overall.

2nd highest scorer LukasCPH scored some 40 points less than Ludwigzgz. His main scorers besides Consonni were Justin Jules (96 points), Doull, Bjorg Lambrecht (42 points) and unique pick Lukas Spengler (32 points). Also in the highest movers classification, LukasCPH is the "bridesmaid".

CraZyCaLL is 3rd highest scorer, and remember, he was 2nd overall in the last update. He scored most of his points with Consonni, Guerreiro, Doull and Riccardo Minali (54 points). Because he was already well placed, this good performance allows CraZyCaLL to move into the lead in the overall ranking! :)

In the highest movers classification, as has already been mentioned, Ludwigzgz and LukasCPH are first and second. 3rd is search, he doesn't have Consonni interestingly, instead he scored with Justin Jules (only sharing him with LukasCPH), Doull and unique pick Wout Van Aert (48 points).

We see quite a lot of movement in the top-10. Of course, we have a new leader, CraZyCaLL, DJW climbs 4 spots to 4th, fauniera, GP Blanco and al_pacino climb as well, while snccdcno and Kryvo drop some positions. Unlucky marty had a bad week and drops to 11th place.

Update 18: Cosnefroy scores big and there's more to come!

Highest scorer in this update is scrooll07 :)  His top scorer was Lennard Hofstede, who scored 84 points thanks to his great performance in the Tour of Denmark and who is only on 3 other teams. Another high scorer for him was Owain Doull (82), but because he is the most picked rider his score doesn’t influence the ranking too much. Other riders that contributed to scrooll07’s score were Ivan Garcia Cortina (50) and Amund Jansen (36). He is also the joint highest mover, climbing 5 positions.
I am the 2nd highest scorer, I also have Hofstede, Doull and Garcia Cortina as well as Miles Scotson (37 points). Despite my high score, I don’t move up on the ranking, I remain 3rd but closer to 1st place :)
3rd highest scorer is GP Blanco, he doesn’t have Hofstede but besides Doull he has a large number of riders that scored a decent chunk of points, for example Garcia Cortina, Scotson, Jansen and Carapaz. Like scrooll07, GP Blanco also moves up 5 spots, moving into 4th overall. It is pretty rare to see such a big jump in the top-10 this late in the competition!
We had another person who climbed 5 positions as well, allobroges, he is one of the 5 that selected Benoît Cosnefroy who won GP Isbergues and scored 85 points, and of course, yesterday he won the U23 world title so those 5 people can probably expect another good score in the next update :)

Overall, the top-3 remains the same, but as mentioned GP Blanco moves 5 spots to 4th. Al_pacino climbs 1 position and DJW and snccdcno both drop 3 positions, but the same names stay in the top-10.

Also, in this update Rudy Barbier finally (exactly!) matched his 2016 score, a staggering 385 points, happy days for laarsland and AupaPyama, although I’m sure they expected a bit more.

Update 19: Rather low scores in post-Worlds update

The points scored in this update come almost exclusively from the Worlds two weeks ago and some of the Italian races last week. Top scorer Midge hit the jackpot with rare pick Cosnefroy winning the U23 Worlds Road Race (60 points) and unique pick Bjerg crowning himself U23 World Time Trial champion. Bjerg also scored in the Chrono des Nations, pushing his total score in the last two weeks to 54 points, and Midge got 18 points from Andrea Vendrame as well.
Only two points behind Midge is allobroges, he too has Cosnefroy and Vendrame, as well as Simone Consonni (30 points) and Vincenzo Albanese (20 points).
Third highest scorer shawnm4747 shares his three main scorers with allobroges (Cosnefroy, Consonni, Albanese) and adds points from Jhonatan Narvaez.

No large leaps in the standings this time, the highest mover is laarsland who climbs 3 spots, with points from rare picks Amund Jansen (46 points), Rudy Barbier (36 points), Tao Geoghegan Hart (15 points) and Aurélien Paret-Peintre (9 points).
Behind him, 4 people share 2nd place in this ranking, allobroges, LukasCPH, Nicosix, Leadbelly, who all move up 2 places.

In the top-10, we don't see much movement, fauniera, DJW and snccdcno climb one spot, rote_lanterne and al_pacino drop one spot each. The top-4 remains the same, with CraZyCaLL still in the lead.

Would you look at that!!! Top of the list. It's been a rough ride all season but I knew my young guns would come good, even if it is just the once. ;p

Thanks for the update Flo

Bjerg also scored in the Chrono des Nations,

Impressive, as it takes place next weekend.  Do you have the full results sheet, so I can put on a bet.

(Duo Normand was the race, as I'm sure you know)

Update 20: Italy on top

This update was great for those that selected a lot of Italians, the Italians is by far the nation with most scorers these last two weeks: Minali, Albanese, Consonni, Masnada, Vendrame, Maronese, Ravasi, Ganna.

Fausto Masnada's great performance that allowed him to finish on the podium in the Tour of Turkey had a big impact on this latest update, he scored 132 points and only two people picked him. Naturally, those two are the two highest scorers: Kazistuta and Trudgin. Both also added a large number of points from David Gaudu (59). Kazistuta also scored with Rémi Cavagna (28) and Ricardo Minali (26), amongst others, Trudgin with Benoit Cosnefroy.

With Kazistuta's big score, he also is the highest mover, moving up 6 spots into the top 10, very rare at this point in the game. Trudgin was one of 6 others to move up 2 spots.
Fauniera was the "best of the rest", he scored with Gaudu, Simone Consonni (46 points), Minali and Cavagna.

Overall, the top 3 remains the same, with CraZyCaLL still in the lead. fauniera hops over GP Blanco, al_pacino and Kazistuta gain some places while DJW drops 1. Kryvo had a bad two weeks and dropped 5 spots from 8th to 13th.
With only a few points to come in, CraZyCaLL seems in a good position, but with an advantage of less than 100 points the victory is definitely not certain.

Update 21: We have a winner!

We've already reached the end of the season, the year has gone by so quickly again. The last few weeks of the season weren't very interesting from the perspective of our game, or from any other perspective  ;) One performance stood out, Jacopo Mosca's win at the Tour of Hainan which earned him and the 4 people that picked him a massive 200 points. The effect of this on the rankings? You'll find out soon...

The highest scorer was search, who, besides Mosca, also saw his unique pick Salah Eddine Mraouni score quite a few points. Kryvo was the 2nd highest scorer, he also selected Mosca and also scored with Doull and Gibbons. He shares this position in the highest scorers ranking with shawnm4747, who has the combination of Mosca, Doull and Bico.

Highest scorers
1   search   248
2   Kryvo   211
2   shawnm4747   211
4   AupaPyama   206
5   comodoro   85
6   fauniera   81
7   Pantani1   80
8   scrooll07   71
9   LaFlorecita   61
9   DJW   61

Shawnm4747, AupaPyama and search move up a few spots, but the top-10 is out of reach for them. Most importantly, we see Kryvo rocket up the rankings, from outside the top-10 he moves to 5th overall.

Highest movers
1   Kryvo   +8
2   shawnm4747   +6
3   AupaPyama   +5
3   search   +5
5   Pantani1   +3
6   DJW   +1
6   Kazistuta   +1
6   Squire   +1
6   Arb   +1
6   Trudgin   +1
6   Pentacycle   +1
6   comodoro   +1

Overall, CraZyCaLL and Hakkie2 both had a terrible week, scoring only 5 points, but they were too far ahead to be threatened by anyone. Kryvo's surge is the most notable thing in the final top-10, snccdcno drops out of the top-10 at the last moment, and curiously we have two people with exactly the same score in the top-10, al_pacino and Kazistuta in 9th, quite rare :)

So, CONGRATULATIONS to CraZyCaLL and THANKS to everyone for playing :)

Overall
1   0   CraZyCaLL   3026
2   0   Hakkie2   2954
3   0   LaFlorecita   2885
4   0   fauniera   2721
5   +8   Kryvo   2629
6   +1   DJW   2628
7   -2   GP Blanco   2610
8   -2   rote_lanterne   2583
9   -1   al_pacino   2519
9   +1   Kazistuta   2519

Hello all

A little info about the 2018 edition of this game:

1) I would not mind doing (most of) the updates again next year, as long as you all don't mind the updates being up a little later in the week. I'm busy with lots of other things besides cycling so I often only find time to do an update in the 2nd half of the week. I didn't hear any complaints about it this year, but I want to make sure this is not an issue.

2) I'm guessing I can still count on the usual suspects to help out with an update every now and then (snccdcno, search, DJW), of course all help is welcome so if you wouldn't mind doing 1 or 2 updates next year, let me know. Updating the spreadsheet is not complicated at all, most of the time goes into writing the update which could take anywhere between 15 to 60 minutes depending on the level of detail and how focused you are at the time of writing :D

and most importantly 3)...

I will be away from 23rd of December to 8th of January... the Australian championships take place from January 3rd to January 7th. So there are two options:
- either someone else needs to collect the teams during this period AND process them... while I don't want to discourage anyone, I have to be honest and say this takes quite a bit of time because you have to make sure all riders are eligible
- or we push the deadline back 1.5 week, the Tour Down Under starts January 14th, the deadline would be perhaps 24 hours before the start of the first stage. This means you could in theory select a rider that scored in the Australian national championships and get a headstart, but that shouldn't have too much of an impact on the final rankings, I believe.

I prefer the 2nd option because it seems unlikely to me anyone will volunteer to process the teams - of course there is a third option which is that all teams are send to me before the 3rd of January and I process them when I get back, however considering how often I have to get back to people and tell them to change an ineligible rider I don't think this would be a good idea

A little info about the 2018 edition of this game:
1) absolutely not an issue for me - it's great that you take the time and make the effort to do regular updates at all. :cool

2) I may or may not be available to do the occasional update. This isn't a definite "yes, I'll do it" yet as I don't know how my 2018 will look, in many aspects; it's a "I don't rule it out".

3) I agree that the second option sounds most prudent.
And it also means that we can all point & laugh at those who picked the best U23 rider in the Aussie nationals who then goes on to do flip all in the remaining 11.5 months of the year (and, yes, that group will likely include yours truly).

Case in point - Campbell Flakemore ;)

The ones I could see go well in the Nats are all quite expensive - will require a lot more than a few dozen points to be good picks

Just caught up with this, 6th! Very happy with that and much better than I expected but MVdP made up a lot of the difference.

Of course Flo, let me know if you need any doing in February / March!
