Title: 2017 Spring Classics CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on February 13, 2017, 23:48
Teams
You need to pick 12 riders, to a budget of 3000 points from the 31 December 2016 CQ download (so you can use your research from the main or youth games): this spreadsheet at Dropbox might help. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/44rbb4imjphkbhk/2017%20Classics%20CQ%20Game%20selector.xls?dl=0)
All riders are available (except Sagan, who would more than blow the budget single-handed), there are no doper rules.

There are 20 one day races that score CQ points in this game (one more than last year):
25/2  Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - 1.WT3
25/2  Sud Ardeche - 1.1
26/2 Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne - 1.HC
26/2 Drome Classic - 1.1
1/3  Le Samyn - 1.1
4/3  Strade Bianche - 1.WT3
5/3  GP Industria & Artigianato - 1.HC
5/3  Dwars door West-Vlaanderen - 1.1
15/3  Nokere Koerse - 1.HC
18/3  Milano - Sanremo - 1.WT1
22/3  Dwars door Vlaanderen - 1.WT3
24/3  E3 Harelbeke - 1.WT2
26/3  Gent - Wevelgem - 1.WT2
2/4  Ronde van Vlaanderen - 1.WT1
5/4  Scheldeprijs - 1.HC
9/4  Paris - Roubaix - 1.WT1
12/4  Brabantse Pijl - 1.HC
16/4  Amstel Gold Race - 1.WT2
19/4  La Flèche Wallonne - 1.WT2
23/4  Liège - Bastogne - Liège - 1.WT1

This comprises all of the European 1.WT and 1.HC races, and any 1.1 race that had at least 1/3 of the WT teams (i.e. at least 6) last year. Ardeche and Drome had 8, as did Dwars door West-Vlaanderen (albeit as a 3 day race, now one day), while Le Samyn had 7 and so those four are in.  Missing the cut are: Ronde van Drenthe(1 WT team in 2016), Handzame Classic (5), Loire Atlantique (2), Cholet - Pays De Loire (2)(is this on this year?), Adélie de Vitré (2), Limburg Classic (2), GP Miguel Indurain (5), Vuelta a La Rioja (2), La Roue Tourangelle (2), Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta (1), Giro dell'Appennino (1), Paris-Camembert (1), Tour du Finistère (2) and Tro-Bro Léon(2).

Points should be higher than previously, as 5 races have been upgraded: Omloop, Strade Bianche and Dwars door Vlaanderen are at the new WT3 level, while Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and GP Industria & Artigianato (not in last year's edition, as there had not been a 2015 edition) have gone up to HC level.

Lugano has changed its date to May, and so is now outside the date range of this game: GP Nobili Rubinetterie was listed last year, but didn't happen, nor is it scheduled this year.  But Dwars door West Vlaanderen and GP Industria make up for that.

Entering
PM to me either at CN or at Velorooms by the beginning of the Omloop on Saturday 25 February (probably mid-morning GMT)
Please submit names in CQ format (easily cut and pasted from the dropbox spreadsheet above) with nothing else on each line.  I have sent my team to the first entrant, Hakkie.

Good luck to all.

Tricky I agree.

I've had to go for Merckx, Pantani & Hinault in order to get in budget.

It'll never be a question. Out. As ever. I don't think he's ever featured in a team of mine except a couple of times in stages on road.cc when I haven't been able to afford who I wanted.

Think I've got a pretty decent team together, 5-6 fairly solid picks, 3-4 back ups and 3 cheap ones with potential to score well.

A fair few riders in the 100-200 range with the potential to score well. I'm stuck choosing between 4 Scandis

In the first eight teams submitted,we have 58 riders named.   The most popular is on 5 teams, but there are four named four times, and another 4 in three teams, while 35 are unique picks.  Two freebies have been called up: two men have been considered worth more than 1/4 of the team budget on their own.

I think there are 14 nations represented, and the age span is, I believe, 22 to 36.

Team in after tinkering today

ended up with only 1 rider I have never heard of, so that was nice

Found a couple of riders I have not even considered, no Barbie  :o  :(

Not 1 Australian

Not sure I will do that well on the popularity stakes had both Big and Little ------ but dropped them today Amstel changing means a fair bit for the game I think

My teams in too

All WT riders, 7 who I'm pretty sure will score at least some points, 2 who might pick up a handful, three picks for less than 150 total who may or may not score points but certainly should get a few races.

Definitely targeting the cobbles but have a couple of Ardennes riders in there, and have gone mainly for guys likely to be leading their teams in their respective races

Mine was first team submitted I think.

2 ProConti and 10 WT.

4 over 500 points each and a load of fillers pretty much.  :lol

6 of my riders add up to 164 points total.

And currently bottom of the popularity table...

this normally makes me very happy... but its the short game, the classics  :( but everybody else has Nando who will go on a Bananito worthy binge when he wins in Colombia.... and vanish for the season  ;)

I will be away for most of the day on Friday, and overnight until late on Saturday,  I don't think I'll have internet access, so I will keep the closing time as already announced (Start of the Omloop, I believe it is 11:45 am CET, 10:45UTC on Saturday) but I won't be able to post team lists or analysis of the teams until Sunday morning (by which time I should have results of 2 races to include).  If anyone wants to announce their own team anytime after the Saturday morning cut off, feel free.

This means that if you might need your team to be checked, and hope for time to change if there is a problem, you only have until about midnight on Thursday night (48 hours from the time of this message): after that, you run the risk of having a rider removed if you miscalculate.

By late on Tuesday (well, early Wednesday), we have 24 teams, 101 riders, of whom 54 are unique picks and 4 are on more than 1/3 of the teams.
Title: Re: 2017 Spring Classics CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on February 23, 2017, 11:10
Quick reminder: although the deadline for entries is 10:45 (UTC) on Saturday, my travels mean that if you want your entry checked, I need it by midnight tonight.

30 entries so far, which makes me think we will have several more than last year by the time we start.  One team still needs correction for being over-budget, or will have one rider removed to bring him under the maximum spend.  If you think you have registered (as of the timestamp on this post), check the list in the OP.  If you are not there, I have somehow not received your PM, so please try again.

Edit: 3 more teams in by midnight, they are also on the OP: the rest of you will have to be extra careful.  Good luck with the late decisions, and I will be back with some stats on Sunday.

The big spends

It doesn’t take great mathematical expertise to calculate that a budget of 3000 points spread across 12 riders means the average spend per rider if 250: those on whom we have spent twice that average are:

(Rider/price/teams)
VAN AVERMAET Greg   2279   1
ALAPHILIPPE Julian   1151   1
BOONEN Tom   951   2
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   833   9
GILBERT Philippe   777   1
TERPSTRA Niki   764   1
VANMARCKE Sep   744   10
STYBAR Zdenek   736   1
NAESEN Oliver   643   3
KWIATKOWSKI Michal   611   7
FELLINE Fabio   607   3
BENOOT Tiesj   588   26
CORT NIELSEN Magnus   555   1
GASPAROTTO Enrico   551   1
DEGENKOLB John   550   34

Some teams managed to buy 4 of these:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, KWIATKOWSKI Michal   BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John:  Del1962, EvansIsTheBest
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, BENOOT Tiesj, CORT NIELSEN Magnus, DEGENKOLB John:  Joelsim
GILBERT Philippe, VANMARCKE Sep, NAESEN Oliver, BENOOT Tiesj:  AG
NAESEN Oliver, KWIATKOWSKI Michal, BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John:  Just Some Guy

Some found room for 3:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, KWIATKOWSKI Michal, FELLINE Fabio:  Los Brolin
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John:  Tom-Jelte, Crevaison
VANMARCKE Sep, BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John   : Armchair Cyclist, Leadbelly, Squire, The_Asian, LightBing, GeraintTooFast
STYBAR Zdenek, BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John:  Kjellus
KWIATKOWSKI Michal, FELLINE Fabio, DEGENKOLB John:  Mellow Velo
KWIATKOWSKI Michal, BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John:  Togo95, Kazistuta

Others have 2:
BOONEN Tom, GASPAROTTO Enrico:Trudgin
BOONEN Tom, DEGENKOLB John: DJSprtsch
ALAPHILIPPE Julian, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando:  Josedin
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, DEGENKOLB John:  Amis Velo, Spokenspin
TERPSTRA Niki, BENOOT Tiesj:  Scrool07
VANMARCKE Sep, DEGENKOLB John:  Rote Laterne, SemirS, Madrazo
NAESEN Oliver, BENOOT Tiesj:  ChrisDK
FELLINE Fabio, DEGENKOLB John:  Comodoro
BENOOT Tiesj, DEGENKOLB John, Hakkie, Search, GPBlanco, Russell23, Archieboy, Shalgo, ThePirate81, NotMyCircus

Or saw no reason to invest heavily more than once:
VAN AVERMAET Greg: All In
DEGENKOLB John:  DJW,Vladimir, Laarsland

And some have entered very egalitarian teams, with no real leader at all:
AupaPyama (Vuillermoz 437 is his dearest pick)
Carlo_Algatrensig (Thwaites 322 is the highest spend)

Rider popularity

How many of our 43 teams chose each rider?

34:  DEGENKOLB John
29:  BOOM Lars
26:  BENOOT Tiesj
25:  VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume
16:  BRESCHEL Matti
16:  ROWE Luke

15:  STUYVEN Jasper
14:  RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan
13:  DEVOLDER Stijn
13:  VANDENBERGH Stijn
12:  BOECKMANS Kris

That selection of the top 12 picks fits neatly into the budget, with  total cost of 2973, so comprises our Collective Wisdom team.

Other picks ranked by popularity:
11: CINK Ondrej, GOUGEARD Alexis, TEUNS Dylan
10:  DOULL Owain, VANMARCKE Sep
9: GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
7:  KWIATKOWSKI Michal, THEUNS Edward
6:  HOELGAARD Daniel, PLANCKAERT Edward
5:  OSS Daniel, PONZI Simone
4:  BOZIC Borut, HAAS Nathan, MINALI Riccardo, PEDERSEN Mads, SIEBERG Marcel, TEUNISSEN Mike
3:  BOUHANNI Rayane, CALMEJANE Lilian, FELLINE Fabio, GARCIA CORTINA Ivan, HARDY Romain, LAMPAERT Yves, NAESEN Oliver, OLIVIER Daan, SARAMOTINS Aleksejs, SIMON Julien, VLIEGEN Loïc, WAEYTENS Zico
2:  ALBASINI Michael, ALLEGAERT Piet, ANDERSEN Søren Kragh, ARREDONDO MORENO Julian David, BOONEN Tom, CIMOLAI Davide, CORBEL Erwann, DE BACKER Bert, DE PLUS Laurens, DECLERCQ Benjamin, DILLIER Silvan, ERVITI OLLO Imanol, GATTO Oscar, GERTS Floris, HANSEN Lasse Norman, KORSAETH Truls Engen, MALORI Adriano, OFFREDO Yoann, PELUCCHI Matteo, PETERS Nans, SALOMEIN Jarl, THWAITES Scott, VAN MEIRHAEGHE Jef, VAN ROOY Kenneth, VERVAEKE Louis, VIVIANI Elia, VUILLERMOZ Alexis, WATSON Calvin

The unique picks (72 of them) are marked above.

That makes for a total of 142 riders.

Race 1: Classic d'Ardèche

I guess I can check the spreadsheet, and find the result of the Ardeche Classic, without it spoiling my enjoyment of the recorded Omloop.

Riders finishing 2nd, 7th and ninth were the only ones in the point scoring top twenty that we chose between us.

CATTANEO Mattia   48   1
SIMON Julien   24   3
CALMEJANE Lilian   16   3

1   GeraintTooFast   48
2   Scrool07   24
2   Search   24
2   The_Asian   24
5   Josedin   16
5   NotMyCircus   16
5   Togo95   16

With only 2 WT teams in this, it would seem unlikely to be included in the game next year (unless I am strongly petitioned to change the terms for race inclusion).  The same seems likely with the Drome Classic.  Points from these tend to make little impact in the game by late April.

I was soo close to picking Finetto - but he initially wasn't lined up for Ardeche, nor for any other classics (not on PCS at least). I guess he may end up doing a handful of races, but without any confirmation at all it was just a tad too risky...

when I saw the result I though Search will be happy but not as much as expected  ;)

Race 2: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

The appropriately named team All_In, with more than 3/4 of his budget spent on one rider, who is twice the price of any other rider included in the game, gets at least some return on his investment with Van Avermaet's win.  Sagan, as noted in the OP, is effectively banned from selection, but third placed Vanmarcke was fairly popular for an expensive rider.
The next five finishers were all part of our game, Rowe and Stuyven even being in the Collective Wisdom team, as were Breschel and Van Keirsbulck (18th and 21st).  Between us, we named 12 of the top 20, and 37 point scoring finishers in all, and we are all off the mark (even if only through one finisher in 60th place)

rider/points/teams
VAN AVERMAET Greg   180   1 for All In

Race 3: Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

Given that the winner was impossible to pick, we collectively did very well with 2nd, 3rd and 4th all being very popular picks (and Collective Wisdom came joint second on this race), and also between us getting 7th, 8th, 9th, 4 other top 20 finishers and another 2 five pointers among the top 30.

Race 4: Drôme Classic

Not the race most of us will have been predicting in building our teams for (and unlikely to be included next year, as it had only 2 WT teams), but nevertheless, three managers picked each of 8th, 12th and 13th.

HARDY Romain   24   3

Geraint has been the expert in this French mini-series: he might miss them next year.

Race 5: Le Samyn

Not many scoring riders but they were 3 of the first 4, but one of them made many teams happy.

1   Spokenspin   120  (Van Keirsbulck and Keisse)
2   Vladimir   116  (Van Keirsbulck and Senechal)
3   23 other teams   80   (Van Keirsbulck)

Those who missed out on Van Keirsbulck were concentrated towards the top of the standings this morning, including 1st, 3rd, 5th and 4 more of the top ten.  Not any more...

Hated my team right after submitting, but I'm behind them anyway. I was kind of bummed not to be able to play Le Samyn on some other fantasy games, so nice consolation prize my team here finishing first there! GVK and Keisse. Nice-a. Can't wait for Strade Bianche... :-x

Wait no longer:

Race 6: Strade Bianche

A great race, and a popular annual event, and a decent performance by our selectors.
We had a moderately popular winner, two UPs in second and fourth, and one of the top picks in 8th, and rare picks 10th and 13th.  Four more of the top 25 are part of our game, along with eleven other finishers, one of who was popular enough to make the Collective Wisdom team.

Standings
The table is still very volatile:  the average rise of the Kwiatowski teams was more than 18 places.  The Pirate relinquishes the lead but hangs on to a podium spot.  Other than 4 Kwiatkowski teams(Mellow Velo, Los Brolin, Just Some Guy and Togo), the other re-entry into the top ten is Van Avermaet-dependent All In.

Race 7: GP Industria & Artigianato - Larciano

Some of the big point scorers here are expensive GC guy looking to Tirreno-Adriatico, who don't do enough of these races to be a good pick here.  There were, however, some good bargains who performed well, some of whom were selected, and some were missed by us all.

2nd CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   84pts for Joelsim
4th CATTANEO Mattia   62pts for Geraint Too Fast
14th ARREDONDO MORENO Julian David   12pts for Joelsim (again) and yours truly.

96 points moved Joelsim 12 places to 24, 62 points gave Geraint a temporary 10 place hike to 18th, and I had a 2 position bump up to 17th.

Then I added in:

Race 8: Dwars door West Vlaanderen
Like all the other 1.1 races, this event had not enough WT teams to remain in the game next year (unless we change the criteria: I am open to suggestions).

But it was an interest chase from what I saw, but not one in which our popular pick managed to close down the leaders.  If the race does get dropped next year, it might not make a vast difference.

2nd  DILLIER Silvan   48pts for Joelsim and Laarsland
3rd  HANSEN Lasse Norman   40pts for Kjellus and Vladimir
5th  VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume   32pts for   25 teams, including all of those who had another scorer in this race
10th  KEISSE Iljo   12pts for   Spokenspin
13th  JANSEN Amund Grøndahl   8pts for Squire

Standings
Winning both events today brought Joelsim from 36th to 14th, and Kjellus remained above him by also having a 10 spot rise through his picks in this race.  Very little change at the top, as this morning's top nine all had Van Keirsbulck and no-one else today: Archieboy didn't, so falls to 15th, as EvansIsTheBest took his tenth place.

Race 9: Nokere Koerse

From now on we have at least one race per week, after a bit of a break for the one week races, but this is a very quiet resumption of the contest.

Our only scorers are:
BOIVIN Guillaume: 12th, 18 pts for AupaPyama
SALOMEIN Jarl: 13th, 15pts for GeraintTooFast and LightBing
NAPOLITANO Danilo: 25th, 5 pts for Trudgin
GERTS Floris: 27th, 5 pts for Carlo_Algatrensig and Laarsland
JANSEN Amund Grøndahl: 30th, 5pts for Squire

and those are our only scorers today.

In the overall standings, LightBing moves up three, Geraint moves up 2, and Carlo and AupaPyama one spot each, but no points at all among the top 15.

I think we can be sure of more game action on Saturday in MSR.

Still only the top 20 showing on CQ, but 7 teams have Kwiatkowski, all but one of whom of whom also have Degenkolb, and 2 of them (Evans in the Best and Del1962) also have Gaviria.  The only Kwiatkowski owner not to have Degenkolb more than makes up for it with Gaviria, and that is Los Brolin, second this morning and probably the new leader.  Josedin has Alaphilippe as a unique pick, and matched with Gaviria has had a decent day.

Standings

The difference between Gaviria and Degenkolb is enough for Los Brolin to overtake Mellow Velo, in a swap of the top two.  The day's winner, Evans Is The Best, moves up from 10th to third, as Pirate91 makes exactly the opposite journey.  Del1962 has a 23 place ump to get into the top ten: Kazistuta and Joelsim also get into the top ten, but less dramatically.  AG shows the danger of not having a very popular pick on the day he gets 90 points, with a 21 position drop.

Race 11: Dwars door Vlaanderen

A race that most of the main favourites for later in the week have sidestepped, and the big selections in the game have done likewise.

LAMPAERT Yves   1st, 180 pts for GeraintTooFast, GPBlanco and Rote Laterne
GILBERT Philippe   2nd, 108   for AG
NAESEN Oliver   6th, 62 for AG, ChrisDK and Just Some Guy
BENOOT Tiesj   7th, 54 for 26 teams
VAN BAARLE Dylan   8th, 46 for Laarsland
SENECHAL Florian   10th, 36 for Vladimir

and, as it is a WT race, no less than 41 other riders getting 5 pts for finishing.

2   GeraintTooFast   281  (Lampaert, Benoot, Breschel and 4 fivers)

That 5th place on the day is enough to bring Just Some Guy to the top of the standings, and Evans is the Best moves up to second.  A poor day for the two previous pacesetters, 37th and 43rd (i.e. last) today, but still in the top four.  Geraint is the only new entry into the top ten, but just outside it, AG regains almost all of his Degenkolb related places, but is still outstripped for riser of the day by GPBlanco's 20 place advance.

Race 12: E3 Harelbake

Standings
No change in the top 4: AG's remarkable week courtesy of Gilbert and Naesens lifts her from 30th of Wednesday morning, via 11th, to 5th place.  All In's tactic of spending 75% of his budget on Van Avermaet means that he will inevitably soar up the table on any race in which the Olympic Champion scores high, and gradually slips down in every other event: it brings him a 13 place jump this time.

Would have been a good return for a rider costing 57 pts.
CQ had Degenkolb up as fifth when they first posted the top ten, but when they added places 11 to 115, Degand's name somehow took his place.  All corrected now though.

Race 14: Ronde van Vlaanderen

Between us, we selected all of the top 4, but only 10 of the top 30 (and only one of those picked in any numbers), and 33 of the other 91 finishers, getting 5 points each.

AG's faith in Philippe Gilbert is rewarded with a most impressive win, and the biggest haul available on a single race.

GILBERT Philippe   1st, 280 pts for AG
VAN AVERMAET Greg   2nd, 170   for All In
TERPSTRA Niki   3rd, 145 for Scrool07
VAN BAARLE Dylan   4th, 125 for Laarsland
DEGENKOLB John   6th, 90 for 34   teams
OFFREDO Yoann   14th, 38 for 2 teams
THWAITES Scott   16th, 32 for 2 teams
FELLINE Fabio   19th, 26 for 3 teams
NAESEN Oliver   23rd, 18 for 3 teams
CORT NIELSEN Magnus   30th, 6 for 1 team

1   AG   313  (Gilbert, Naesen and 3 fivers)
2   Laarsland   250  (Van Baarle, Degenolb and 3 fivers)

11   JustSomeGuy   128 (Degenkolb, Naesen and 4 fivers)

Standings

With 2 races left before we enter the phase of the game for which a totally different group of riders are likely to earn points, JSG extends his lead, and AG rises to 2nd place.  Mellow Velo was 7th on the day, but still evicted from the podium due to Gilbert's performance.  Another leap for GVA-lead  All In, but his leap was exceeded by Laarsland (7 places) and Vladimir (8), becauseof the densely grouped part of the field they inhabit.

From looking ahead if it gets close after Roubiax Simone Ponzi might be the key for the game

A couple or so in the top 5 have him I don´t AG does not

and then AG might win if Phil goes crazy and Kwato does nothing, but AG will be hoping Degenkolb has a bad Roubiax

Race 16: Paris-Roubaix

If ever the tactic employed by All In could work, GvA has done his best to make it work.  But even on the day he wins his biggest race, All In is not top scorer.

The podium were all unique picks, 4th was a much more popular selection.  We have 2 more of the top ten, another 7 out of the next ten, 4 more in the top 30, and 21 other 5 pointers.

A brief look at the squads suggests that the hillier races have not been a major priority in selections among the teams at the top; The top pair, and Evans is the Best,  have Kwiatkowski, All In obviously has Van Avermaet, and AG has Gilbert, but scoring in the last few races tends to be low.  Here's the spreadsheet at Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/hvocm2oh8pu7vmv/classics%20game%202017%20in%20progress.xls?dl=0) if you can find the riders who might yet make a difference.

After the Flandrian style race that is not in Flanders, the Ardennes style race that is not in the Ardennes: Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday.

some riders might be a stretch But I recon Mellow might have the advantage if Kwato does well, or AG if Kwato does nothing and Fabulous dances like its 2011 My 117 point lead might be enough. Evans is best has a chance if Ponzi goes crazy but looks unlikely from the startlists I looked at ;) or Carlos brings out the Bikini

So I recon it is 3 way go at the win

Me
Mellow Velo
AG

My money would be on Mellow as I recon Felline has a real chance of winning Amstel

Race 17: Brabantse Pijl

As an HC race, this had 30 riders who got points.  Between us, we selected 9 of them: the highest placed being very popular, the others being on no more than 2 teams each.

BENOOT Tiesj   3rd, 72 points for 26 teams
LINDEMAN Bert-Jan   5th, 54 pts for Scrool07
DILLIER Silvan   8th, 36pts for Joelsim and Laarsland
DE PLUS Laurens   10th, 26pts for All In and Shalgo
GASPAROTTO Enrico   12pts   1 team
GILBERT Philippe   11   1
VANENDERT Jelle   6   1
HANSEN Lasse Norman   5   2
VAN DER SANDE Tosh   5   1

1   Scrool07   126 (Benoot and Lindeman)
2   Joelsim   108 (Benoot and Dillier)
3   Shalgo   98 (Benoot and De Plus)
4   AG   83 (Benoot and Gilbert)
5   Kjellus   77(Benoot and Hansen)
5   NotMyCircus   77(Benoot and Van Der Sande)
7   20 teams with Benoot   72
27   Laarsland   36
28   All_In   26
29   Trudgin   12
30   Vladimir   11
31   13 non-scorers    0
   CollectiveWisdom   72

Standings

The biggest scorer was near ubiquitous, and lesser scorers rare picks, so not a great difference brought about today, but the podium has changed, with Benoot-less Mellow Velo falling from 2nd, overtaken by Shalgo and All In (also without Benoot, but with De Plus), Togo95 sneaks into the top ten, and Joelsim is top riser.

I have just noticed this afternoon that the GP de Denain is now HC category, as it was last year, and so should have been included in the game both then and this year.

Luckily, the highest placed rider that any of us picked was in 17th place:

HOELGAARD Daniel   17th, 9 non-points  for Archieboy, DJW, Kjellus, Leadbelly, Los Brolin and NotMyCircus
BOIVIN Guillaume   23rd, 5 points snatched away from   AupaPayama
DANIEL Maxime   26th, another 5 points cruelly stolen from NotMyCircus
CORBEL Erwann   27th, 5 points denied to Armchair Cyclist and Del1962

The highest placed affected team is in 13th place.

If any of the above teams feel that the points deprived by the non-inclusion of this race would have made a substantial difference to their chances of making up the several hundred points between them and the top of the table, thus depriving them of a shot at the extensive prize-pool, they can send me a stamped address envelope and I shall refund their entry fee in rusty 2p coins.

(Last year I had Thomas Boudat as a unique pick, and he came 2nd in this race)

Tro Bro Leon. :D
The one race that has it all. (bar the required UCI catagory) :(

I like Tro Bro Leon, but I have tried to have keep fairly cut and dried criteria: 1.1 races only if they have a decent number of WT teams.  There haven't been any this year that have earned their place in next year's game by that criterion, but we can have that debate after the game is over (1 week to go).

Race 18: Amstel Gold

We did better than we often do in the Ardennes races, with the top 4 all selected and some big points for those near the top of the table.

GILBERT Philippe   1st, 220pts for AG
KWIATKOWSKI Michal   2nd, 132pts for 7 teams
ALBASINI Michael   3rd, 112   for Comodoro and DJW
HAAS Nathan   4th, 96 for AupaPyama, Del1962, Kazistuta and NotMyCircus
VAN AVERMAET Greg   12th, 35pts for All In
BENOOT Tiesj   14th, 27pts for 26 teams
LANGEVELD Sebastian   20th, 16   for DJSprtsch
FELLINE Fabio   29th, 7pts for 3 teams
and 15 of the 73 fivers.

1   Kazistuta   260 (Kwiatkowski, Haas, Benoot and a fiver)
2   Del1962   255 (Kwiatkowski, Haas and Benoot)

Standings
6 of the top 9 are among the 7 teams with Kwiatkowski: the other three are AG (who has Gilbert and moved up to 2nd place), Shalgo (whose best finisher today was Benoot and falls from 2nd to 5th) and All In, with a Van Avermaet based team and a four place drop to 7th).  Los Brolin is the other Kwiatkowski owner, but his Degenkolb-free status has limited his total score, but he at least got the biggest (8 place) rise.  Kazistuta and Del1962 are new in the top ten.

Sorry to be a pain but Oliver Naesen points are missing. According to  cq he got 30

You are right indeed: trying to get the results up quickly, I trusted CQ even though it did say provisional: 103 finishers were credited, so I guessed it looked complete.   30 extra points for the Naesen teams (including both of the top two, Just Some Guy and AG, and also ChrisDK), and 5 extra riders getting 5 points as previously uncredited finishers, but the points earned by Benoot, Langeveld and Felline are lower when account is finally made of those who finished above them.

Well, comparing final and provisional versions of results sheets reveal that:
*Barbier, not Barbero, was as a 5 pointer in the Ronde, but neither of them were picked anyway.
*that CQ are adamant that  Gijs Van Hoecke rather than Robert Wagner was a finisher in Gent Wevelgem (5 points less for ChrisDK)

But I will wait until it is a confirmed set of results for the last two races.

Perhaps the race for the top step is over: Gilbert is apparently out of the Fleche and L-B-L (http://www.quickstepfloorscycling.com/en/news/detail/philipe-gilbert-out-of-remaining-ardennes-classics/3120)

yeah  -   he woul dhave made LBL pretty interesting at least.  Dunno about FW, I dont think anyone could beat Valverde at that anyway.

Now LBL may well be a sprint as per usual - but I hope not.  I hope some of hte other teams will animate things and liven it up.

For this game - well done.  I think it would take a pretty big upset for you not to take this one (though even if Phil had come through it would be a win for you anyway  :P )

Race 19: Fleche Wallonne

The first two finishers were too pricey to be realistic picks for this game, but the previously disappointing fairly popular pick who took the last podium spot has turned himself into a very worthwhile buy.

TEUNS Dylan   3rd, 112pts   11 teams
ALBASINI Michael   5th, 86pts 2 teams
KWIATKOWSKI Michal   7th, 66pts, 7 teams
VANENDERT Jelle   19pts   1 team
SLAGTER Tom-Jelte   15   1
VUILLERMOZ Alexis   10   2
and 13 other 5 point finishers

1   DJW   198 (Teuns, Albasini)
2   Kazistuta   183 (Teuns, Kwiatkowski, a fiver)

Standings

Kazistuta (courtesy of Kwiatkowski, Teuns, Haas and Benoot) has been the post-cobble star: he was 12th after Paris Roubaix, now up to 2nd.  But nearly 200 pts adrift: he would need Kwiatkowski to fail, and something way beyond expectation from his other three to close that gap.  The battle for the podium is still live though.

DJW has an 11 place improvement, but like many of us, too little too late.

@JSG - so if Teuns or Nathan Haas wins you are screwed?   is that right?

even with Teuns doing amazing at FW, I think you are fairly safe that Valverde or Kwiatkowski will take the points and give you the win   :D

Kwia getting no points wont matter - you both have him.

You are far enough ahead that you dont need to score additional points - just need for Kazistuta's riders that you dont have (ie Teuns + Haas) not to score too big.

The Final Event

Race 20: Liege-Bastogne-Liege

There were scenarios around good, but not impossible, performances from Teuns and Haas that might have seen a change in the outcome of the game, but it didn't happen.

Instead, the rider who has been the most popular of the big scorers was again our main scorer.

KWIATKOWSKI Michal   3rd, 145 pts for 7 teams
ALBASINI Michael   7th, 90 pts for 2 teams
VAN AVERMAET Greg   54 pts for 1 team
FELLINE Fabio   32 pts for 3 teams

VANENDERT Jelle   26   1
TEUNS Dylan   16   11

Final standings

Just Some Guy took the lead after race 11 (Dwars voor Vlaanderen), and has stayed there ever since.
Kazistuta hung on for 2nd, and top score on the day gets Mellow Velo, just, onto the podium.  A final burst gats Los Brolin into the final top ten.  The consolation to those in the crowded mid-table that is a mention as top riser of the day, is shared this final time by Comodoro and DJW.

The Spring season has been dominated by 5 riders:
Sagan (who was beyond a team budget)
Valverde (much of his dominance was in stage races and therefore no advantage here, and he would have been a very expensive pick given that these races are not his main source of points),
Van Avermaet (who seemed prohibitively expensive, but one team didn't think so)
Gilbert (who proved a very good unique pick)
and Kwiatkowski (by far the best value of these in points/cost balance, and chosen by all the top 4)

The top ten consists of the teams that had Van Avermaet and Gilbert as unique picks, the 7 teams with Kwiatkowski, and Shalgo, who managed 7th place without any of the big 5.

Congratulations to JSG on his win, and to Kazistuta and Mellow Velo for their podium positions; thanks to everyone else for your interest and participation.

Here is the spreadsheet on Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/c7b5fx8fw7da2tx/classics%20game%202017%20final.xls?dl=0) if you want to do any further analysis, see where your team went wrong, or see if you can calculate a better best possible team.

I should have had GP de Denain as part of the game: it was 1.HC but I hadn't noticed its promotion.  None of the 1.1 races this year met my threshhold of having 6 WT teams competing (poss because of other races having been promoted to WT), so I envisage none of them being in the game next year, so it is due to be the 17 1.HC or above races, and possibly any others that get date shifted into the scope of the game (as Lugano date shifted out of it this year).  If you have any proposals otherwise, let's hear them.
