Tour of Croatia

When the Tour of Croatia tried to enter the scene two years ago, they wanted to do so with a bang, live coverage, eight World Tour teams, and with the aim to get all big guys preparing for the Giro and become one of the most famous stage races in the world.

Well, in the end there was no World Tour team at all, live coverage broke down on the mountain stage, and no one really took notice. But things improved last year, with five World Tour teams, and this year sees another step up, with Vincenzo Nibali using the Tour of Croatia as preparation for the Giro:
The startlist isn't final yet, but if he is in any kind of shape, it'll be tough for anyone to challenge him, with two mountain top finishes in the race now.

Fortunately the organizers have also got rid of the approximately ~100km TTT they implemented last year

Stage 1: Osijek – Koprivnica

Stage 2: Trogir – Biokovo (Sveti Jure)

Stage 3: Imotski – Zadar

Stage 4: Crikvenica – Umag

Stage 5: Poreč – Učka (Poklon)

Stage 6: Samobor – Zagreb

So it seems like we will get two or three sprints, two hard mountain stages, and that nice cobbled crit circuit in Zagreb again. Looks like a decent parcours.

The race will be broadcasted live on Eurosport 2 again.

I couldn't find a proper profile for the new Biokovo climb, but it seems to be something like ~25k at 6-7% average. So that's two stage finishes on >20k climbs then. I understand that they want to attract riders preparing for the Giro, but that's probably a bit too much for a six day race.

profiles of the mountain stages, via @raffilpt. So they are not going to the top of the Ukca climb this year, the stage finish is located ~7k down the mountain

I only watched the final 5k or so, which were alright, given that the climb had to be shortened (for whatever reason - weather looked perfectly fine at the place they finished) by a freaking 16 (!) km.

One poor attack by Nibali, and Durasek was just the quickest to realize that the final km seemed to be only 500m long or so. Well, and just the quickest anyway I guess from those who managed to stay with Nibali

I don't think UAE will remember today with much fondness.

• Modolo crashes out on the finishing circuit
• Durasek crashes, injures his ribs and loses the leader's jersey
• Niemiec crashes and breaks his collarbone
