Title: 2017 Giro CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on April 26, 2017, 23:26
I have decided to launch this a little earlier than usual.  The Giro starts on a Friday, the preceding Monday is a public holiday in many countries, CQ have often not made the weekly download available until later than the usual Monday early evening: there are ways it could have gone a bit pear shaped, so I have decided to use the prices from last Sunday, rather than the Sunday immediately preceding the race as I have normally done.  I guess that means that anyone riding in Romandie this week is a bit cheaper than they would have been if I had waited, anyone who was in it last year gets to be slightly dearer.

So although I am launching it now, there is no great need to hurry with your selection: by all means wait until teams are more settled.  As previously, there is a spreadsheet which will make sure you have used the appropriate price, avoid you going over budget, and give the right versions of names: here it is at dropbox. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/dxvgw0i0b94x3xv/Giro%202017%20team%20selector.xls?dl=0)

The rest of the intro many of you will be familiar with, but new contestants are very welcome:

Team of exactly nine riders
Budget    Budget will be 3500 points.  If you don't leave your team until the last moment, I'll be able to warn you of errors: if it is later than my going to bed on Thursday night, I'm unlikely to able to help.  If you are over budget, I'll take out the cheapest rider who can be replaced with a cheaper member of his team that will bring you into budget: if you pick someone who is not riding, I'll replace him with the next cheapest of his team, or the next cheapest in the race if there is not one in his team.

Price of riders
CQ score for 12 months to 23rd April, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 24th will be considered definitive.
There is a dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game (https://www.dropbox.com/s/dxvgw0i0b94x3xv/Giro%202017%20team%20selector.xls?dl=0), and a facility for checking the team total.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at CN.
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care, as do accents or other diacritics)  It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams.  If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

I have lodged my team with ChrisDK, the first person to submit a team, and won't change it unless any of them drop out.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Friday 5th May at noon (Italian time) (but don't expect any analysis of teams until I get in from work that evening).

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2) (http://www.cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/rules.asp).  Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

Entries
will be listed here, hopefully updated daily.  If you have not seen your name 24 hours after submitting it, drop me a reminder.  If you are on another forum, by all means plug it there.

Me too............................................for once.
Damn. that's Tibaut Pinot out of my team. for starters
He was about to drop 230 points in cost.
Some riders cheaper, but some good ones more expensive, too.
Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Sure we can't have 3503 points?

Some good value picks here and a lots of GC hopefuls at a similar price, not to hard to pick a team that will win plenty of points but difficult to judge exactly which riders will come out on top.

After all my cautiousness about when CQ would put the update up and whether people would need the weekend to give time to putting a team together, CQ have put up the download earlier than ever, and only 4 teams have been sent in before it is available.

I'm not going to go back on the decision now, but those who might feel are those picking Quintana (would have been 315 cheaper), Pinot (232), Dumoulin (151), Zakarin (121), Costa (113), Mollema (71) and Yates (61):  on the other hand, if you want to pick Fraile (90 cheaper), Kelderman (83), Jungels (76) Van Garderen (76) or Edmondson (61), you have a bargain.

I'm not quite sure what this means??

If we take the file of April 24th wouldn't it be the 12-month score up to April 24th? Or do I have to manually subtract the points earned between April 2nd and April 24th?

I think it should say 23rd April which would be the update released on the 24th. That's what I'm going with anyway

Sorry: missed the 3 in what should have said 23rd.

The spreadsheet on Dropbox referenced in the opening text, or the list in Search's message a little up this page (which I will update with FDJ, CDT and QST shortly), give the price you need to think of.

I'll edit the OP now.

With all the teams except Willier confirmed, and two and  half days left before the deadline, we have 15 teams so far.  Some have been thrown by the expected selections of Clarke and Cimolai not being confirmed, so I am awaiting some revisions.

2 riders are clear favourites in terms of popularity so far, each on 3/4 of the teams or more: after them, there are only 4 others that are on more than 1/4 of teams.  49 riders have been picked, 23 of them unique picks.

Remember that the race starts on Friday, and the deadline for entries is the waving of that flag in Alghero (12:25  CET): if you don't get your team to me before I go to bed on Thursday night (about midnight UK time), I won't be able to check it.

All the Clarke/Cimolai/failure to count accurately to 9 issues have been addressed.

A few extra teams are in (23 now), but if numbers are going to hold up to previous years I m hoping for a last day rush.

Those 23 teams feature 61 of the 197 riders in the race: 32 of them are unique picks.  One is omitted by only 2 teams, one is on nearly 3/4 of teams, a third is also more selected than omitted, and one more is very close to that 50% selection mark.  4 teams combine all 4 of these top picks, but we all know that the popularity of a rider is no guarantee of his success.

Just over 28 hours as of the timestamp on this post to get your teams in: good luck.

The automatic replacements for Ruffoni and Pirazzi according to the game rules above would be Albanese and Andreeta respectively.

I'm guessing that is not the best way of using their points that the 9 teams still affected (some have already contacted me) would choose.

I'll PM the teams involved, and please get back to me as soon as possible with your change.

I guess I can extend the deadline a bit in the circumstances: I think it would it be fair if I said that affected times (but only affected teams) can have until 6pm (UK time) Friday evening, as I won't have a chance to put up team summaries much before that, on condition they do not pick anyone who scores points tomorrow (no restriction on changes before race starts, obviously).  Fair?

All the Pirazzi/Ruffoni teams got themselves sorted before the race started, so no need for special dispensations after all.

No new entries after the early hours of this morning, so 46 teams aboard, all with 9 starters.

I'm just in from work: I'll watch the last few km then start putting the analysis together.

Rider popularity

There are 195 riders in the race (22x9, minus Astana's non-replacement of Scarponi and two Bardiani fools): 80 of themhave been selected.

Of the 46 teams, how many chose each rider?
(The nine riders in bold are the Collective Wisdom team: to simply take the nine most popular riders would be so wildly over budget as to make comparison with managers' teams meaningless.  This combination is slightly below budget at 3404 pts)

42: LANDA MEANA Mikel
26: NIBALI Vincenzo
25: KRUIJSWIJK Steven, FOLIFOROV Alexander
21: FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar
19: ZAKARIN Ilnur
13: PINOT Thibaut, VAN GARDEREN Tejay
10: THOMAS Geraint, KANGERT Tanel, GASPAROTTO Enrico, TIRALONGO Paolo
9: YATES Adam, ROLLAND Pierre, PONZI Simone, AGNOLI Valerio
8: GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
7: POZZOVIVO Domenico, FIRSANOV Sergey, PELUCCHI Matteo, CICCONE Giulio
6: FORMOLO Davide
5: EDMONDSON Alexander, VAN DEN BROECK Jurgen, SAVITSKY Ivan, KOZONTCHUK Dmitriy
4: MODOLO Sacha, AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey, KONRAD Patrick, HIRT Jan
3: JUNGELS Bob, BENNETT Sam, CATALDO Dario, HANSEN Jesper, MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe, KISERLOVSKI Robert, ALAFACI Eugenio
2: WOODS Michael, CARTHY Hugh, BAUHAUS Phil, POLANC Jan, DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd, LUDVIGSSON Tobias, PETILLI Simone, HEPBURN Michael, RAVASI Edward, RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian, KOSHEVOY Ilia, AMEZQUETA MORENO Julen

and the 31 unique picks can be seen in the team lists above, marked with an asterisk.

Stage 1

Sorry I'm late: spreadsheet instability, evening out, Saturday lie-in, repeated spreadsheet instability, ...

Purple points
No normal person uses the word cyclamen as a colour name in English, and those who do use it to refer to a shade of pink similar to that worn by the race  leader.  I'm no gardener, but a quick Google images view of cyclamen shows that they come in pink, white, red or a pale lilac shade of purple.  That shirt is undeniably purple, and the imperial history of the colour should make all sprinters (and Austrian barodeurs) proud to recognise it as such, so that's what I call it.

So the daily points won that are safe and secure, those for being in the top 10 in any stage (70, 40, 25, 15, 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1) and the 18 bonus points for wearing the pink jersey (and that can become equivalent to several stage wins in some editions) are logged under this heading.  These are the points that a rider keeps even if he fails to finish.

Top sprinters are expensive, and there are not that many stages that they will get their points on, so any sprinter purchase is a risky one in this game, but it sometimes pays off.  And then, of course, there is the possibility that sprinters will be robbed of the points that are available to them by an unlikely leadout man rolling away from the front of the race.

PÖSTLBERGER Lukas   88pts   1   teams (Just Some Guy)
EWAN Caleb   40   0   teams
GREIPEL André   25   0   teams
NIZZOLO Giacomo   15   0   teams
MODOLO Sacha   10   4   teams (LightBing, Scrool07, Search, Torcia86)
SBARAGLI Kristian   7   1   teams (Josedin)
STUYVEN Jasper   5   1   teams (Silver Grenade)
GIBBONS Ryan   3   0   teams
BENNETT Sam   2   3   teams (Search, ThePirate81, Vladimir)
BAUHAUS Phil   1   2   teams (Kazistuta, Yellow Knight)

I'm willing to bet that whatever points Just Some Guy thought he would get from the unique pick of Postleberger, it was not from winning an obvious sprint stage and wearing pink.  I'll trust that his recent win of the Spring Classics game was less of a fluke.

1   JustSomeGuy   88
2   Search   12
3   Scrool07   10
3   LightBing   10
3   Torcia86   10
6   Josedin   7
7   SilverGrenade   5
8   ThePirate81   2
8   Vladimir   2
10   Kazistuta   1
10   Yellow_Knight   1
(That's not a decision to show the top ten: it's the only teams with points in this category)

Pink points
These are all the points that a rider has in all the categories, so that is the accumulated guaranteed "purple" points, plus the points relevant to his current standings in the GC, and the points and mountains categories.   CQ rankings are fairly GC heavy compared to other websites: the top ten get 500, , 75, 315, 265, 240, 215, 190, 165, 150 and 135, then down through 66 for 20th, 44 for 30th, 26 for 40th to 16 for 50th and 15 for all other finishers.  KoM and Points jerseys score the same as a stage.  There are no points here for white jersey, nor for the myriad other minor competitions that the Giro maintains.

I won't list the riders' points each day, but I'll note major point gains or losses by rider: yes, points can be lost (for example Benedetti, a unique pick for Tych23 as a late replacement for Pirazzi, has 70 points at the moment for leading the KoM, but has not gone in the break today, so is likely to fall to about 3rd in that ranking, in which case his score tonight will be 45 less than this morning).  After GC relevant stages, esp in the first week or two, there will be very large changes here, but this is the real competition.

(The scores might look impressive, but even if your riders filled places 187 to 195 yesterday you would have 135 points)

Stage 2

Purple points

The only expensive sprinter who was picked much was Gaviria, but his teams will be expecting more pf a return from him than he seems to be on course for thus far.  The lower budget sprinters will be outsiders to get any points at all, but on days like today, they can do it.

This is why 8 teams thought that Gaviria might be worth a price higher than some GC contenders.  If he can stay in pink fro three more weeks, they will definitely be right, but given that that won't happen, he will be expected to do more on future stages.

Unless there is an eruption of Etna, causing a cancellation or curtailment, we can confidently predict an eruption in this table on Tuesday.

Nice of them to have a day off on the Monday following a first Sunday: I might be able to get some or all editions of the Emerging Riders games update done on the "rest day".

If you are stuck for how to use your cycling-watching time on rest day, you can peruse the spreadsheet here. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/2evfzybjmcf3yxr/Giro%202017%20CQ%20game.xls?dl=0)

So today is when the game begins to take shape.

In most editions of the GT games, the race winner is an absolute must have if he gets the leaders jersey early.  In this edition, price differences are such that by eschewing the favourite to win, it was possible to get three or four (because Landa is so cheap) podium contenders.

I was pleased to see that one team did go for the Quintana/Landa/makeweights option (thanks Shalgo).  If, as some expect, Quintana wins by a big margin today, he is headed for not only 500 pts for winning GC, but also a massive 306 accumulated pink jersey wearer points (equivalent to somewhere between 3rd and 4th in GC).  Then Landa's performance becomes key: his ubiquity means he takes the tactical role of the teammate of a KoM jersey contender's teammate takeing points at a pass so that no-one else can get them.  If Quintana were to take an unsurmountable grip on GC today (I don't particularly expect it myself, but some do), and Landa ends up 2nd on GC, then it will require 3rd, 4th and 5th from another Landa owning team to cancel that out.  And that leaves the non-Shalgo team only 5 other riders, as opposed to Shalgo's 7, to get other points.  If Landa is below 3rd in final GC, then 2nd, 3rd and 10th would be enough to cancel out Quintana, but that is still a set of results most of us won't get, or even get near to.

Now I put it like that, perhaps I should have gone for Quintana after all.

Sure that could happen but I don´t expect it

Nibali and Bahrain will set down a big marker today, and I expect Landa to attack early and be dragged back and spat out the back, with G being the sky leader from here on

Nibali not due to do anything decent until stage 19, at which point he'll ride everyone into submission and regain the 12 minutes he is behind at that point.

Realistically Quintana and Landa have to make time on all these ascents over the likes of Dumo and G. Otherwise they'll be struggling to make up time after the first ITT with another one to come. Dumo could put 5+ minutes into Landa over the two ITTs and probably not far off that with Nairo.

The leader for the first 2 days, Just Some Guy, drops behind the 8 Gaviria teams to 9th, but it is those Jungels owners that were lower in the table that have the biggest rises today.

So, out of 8 Gaviria teams I am 8th.

The way the scoring system for this game works is a mystery to me. Only thing I can tell is that I'm near the bottom of the ranking :?

1st few stages are always a mess

Guaranteed points - you get this

Then AC does projection points if the race finished now ( current GC ) , the minus or plus next to your name is your ride and fall from the previous stage

Right - so in a few days I'll be on top as I have no sprinters :lol

2nd thought who scored the few points I have :?

As of this morning, you had 25 pts in the mountains category for Fraile standing in third in that; between 22 and 58 GC points for those of your riders who had finished in the main bunch each day, and were between 23rd and 44th; and your 4 remaining riders, no matter how much time they have lost, have 15 GC points each.
Did the dropbox link to the spreadsheet not work?

But I am about to put in today's results, so things will be very different: sprinters' projected GC points will drop dramatically, and contenders will hoover them up.  But there will still be little to read into the order between them.

Stage 4 Mt Etna

Purple Points

Although we saw no-one trying to break the race apart, we do have the riders who are more likely to be worth investment higher in the field, so at least a few points for nearly everyone.

Yesterday's standings are reduced to irrelevance: of that top ten, only 2 are in the top ten today(yesterday's leader is now 5th, today's was 10th), and 4 are in the bottom ten.  23 teams have a double digit move (Jakob's 30 place rise being the best), and only the two teams at the bottom are in the same places as when they left Sardinia.

Stage 5  Race to the ferry

I haven't watched yet: might get a chance to later but I get the impression I haven't missed anything.

Purple points
Mainly lower profile sprinters in the top ten, who are therefore more affordable and more frequently chosen.  And Gaviria, who is getting close to justifying the big outlay that some have spent on him.  He already has enough guaranteed points to be better than 8th in GC (if that rider were to get no more than 7 stage points).

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   70pts   8   teams
MARECZKO Jakub   40   0   team
BENNETT Sam   25   3   teams
JUNGELS Bob   18   3   teams
GREIPEL André   15   0   team
BAUHAUS Phil   10   2   teams
SBARAGLI Kristian   7   1   team
GIBBONS Ryan   5   0   team

I do not understand how you can loose all the points someone gets you, in one foul swoop.

whats the point in picking a winner if you loose their points if they dont win?

5th to 2nd bottom back to 35th????

Stage 7 Marshall dodging and a one lap crit

Purple points

Gaviria is now equivalent to 6th in final GC through guaranteed points alone: there will be more expensive GC picks who don't do that...
Meanwhile, Jungels' accumulated leader bonuses are now worth more than a stage win.

Stage 8 One hairpin too many for Conti

Purple points

Torcia86 will have been upset about the fate of his unique pick in the last km, and Jungels' retention of pink, which twice seemed to be in doubt, prevented my unique pick from being top scorer today.

Standings
Forget everything prior to today.
Of yesterday's top 5, only one is now in the top 30; one of yesterday's top ten is still top ten (Jakob, now 4th). Today's top three were 28th, 24th and 27th yesterday.  3 teams rise by 30+ places (Laarsland 36, Flo 35, Kabete 32) and another 7 by 20+:  9 teams fell by more than 20 places, with Mellow Velo surely breaking all records, tumbling 41 places in a 46 strong field.

But hope you had a nice day otherwise Mellow

When I sent in my team I though the TJVG might end up being my most important rider, I have seen the results and that he road in with Jungels, the ITT will be key, nice to be back up on the Podium

Stage 10 ITT

Did only one entrant think Dumoulin might be in with a chance, or was it that only one thought he was half as good again as a prospect than Nibali or Pinot?  Yellow Knight's trust brings some dividends.  Mollema meanwhile, almost exactly the same price as Pinot, got the nod over the Frenchman from absolutely no-one, which is beginning to look collectively remiss of us.

In contrast to many previous games, most teams go into week 2 with their full complement of 9, and no team has lost more than one rider.  Pelucci was, I assume, a cheap sprinter in the hope of some fluke top tens rather than a major tactical bulwark for his 7 teams: Kelderman will have been more of a loss to Vladimir.

Standings

No change among that very tight top 4, except that it is even tighter, and immediately below them Yellow Knight, who was second last before they started the Blockhaus stage, but up 29 places today (putting Kazistuta's 25 place rise in the shade) and with the prospect of at least a few days' worth of 18 point bonuses to follow.  The other upward movement in the top ten is Leadbelly going from 10th to 6th.

Stage 11 Short and Bumpy

Purple points

Half our teams thought that Omar would be the man for the Blue jersey, and maybe for a few stage placings, but not for sprinting like that.

Pink points
Other than the stage points, the rises of Amador, Kangert and Cataldo have an opposite effect of falls for other riders who might no longer be thought of as contenders.  Van Garderen's fall is achieved independently of the efforts of the breakaway.

Standings

The two big scorers on the day, Kabete and GPBlanco, leap from 7th and 12th respectively to first and second places, but their tenure is only as safe as the new elevated positions of Amador and Kangert.  Yellow Knight, the only team with Dumoulin, also has Kangert, and also reaches the podium.  There are even bigger rises further down the table, Rote Laterne being the biggest climber (17 places).

Stage 13 Sprint after a sprint, but the last of them

Assuming Gaviria gets into Milan, he will probably score more game points than whoever comes 2nd on GC, and will probably have been much cheaper than whoever that is.  Well done to the teams that picked him.

That is beginning to look like a very tidy lead, built on Gaviriia,Nibali, GPM specialist Fraile, and what many will consider to be two top ten overachievers in Amador and Kangert.  Can they, and GPBlanco,  hang on?  Vladimir out-rises the Gavirians, taking a nine place leap courtesy of Bennett.

A possible 126 pink jersey points still to come, and another TT for which he will be a favourite: Dumoulin will be a big part of this classification as well as of the main part of the game.

Popular riders abound in the top 10 today, along with the pair who were not to be ignored, but were too expensive to be very popular.

Pink points

Zakarin tops up his 2nd place points with a GC jump from 10th to 5th, but Dumoulin goes from 11th to first on the KoM classification, and so gets 70 more projected points.  In effect, He has maximised his projected category points, which ban only fall, and can only gain through daily bonuses.

Standings

And it is back to being very close: 8 teams within 107 points.  Kangert's gain was not enough to make up for the losses of Amador for GPBlanco, while Crevaison, with all five of the non-Dumoulin riders whose score increased by 30 or more, comes from 7th to overtake him.  Fauniera, Trudgin and Kabete (2nd, 3rd and 4th previously) slip backwards for lack of Zakarin/Dumoulin, allowing Laarsland, Yellow Knight and Flo to move up.  Leadbelly makes a top ten appearance, and Los Brolin is the 13 place high riser of the day.

Standings
Only 2 teams are still in the same position as before the rest day: one of them is mid-table, but the other is our leader, Fauniera.  Plenty of change behind him, and a much narrower lead.  The closest challengers, GPBlanco and Crevaison, are up from 7th and 6th respectivey, and behind them AG on the back of a best-of-the-day 14 place rise.  Hakkie, SemirS, Amis Velo, GodChild and Squire are also entries to the top ten.  Yellow Knight's fall is as much down to being Landa-less as Dumoulin's gastric discomfort, but while Quintana is well placed to take advantage, the only Quintana team, Shalgo, would require another 200 pts beyond the 125 additional points  for 1st rather than 2nd, and the 72 remaining pink jersey bonus points, to be competitive.

Stage 17  Cannondale getting into the winning habit

13   SemirS   448
14   Leadbelly   415
15   Mellow_Velo   403

Pink Points

There are some who seemed to think that Polanc was heading for a much bigger point increase at some stage today...

ROLLAND Pierre   82   9   teams
POLANC Jan   29   2   teams
MONFORT Maxime   22   1   team
DUMOULIN Tom   16   1   team
BUSATO Matteo   10   1   team

FORMOLO Davide   -16   6   teams
AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey   -16   4   teams

So nothing very dramatic for our teams today:

Standings

The gap opens again at the top, as the top two have Rolland.  Two other teams from the top ten have him: Godchild, up from 9th to reach the virtual podium, and Squire, from 10th to 5th. Despite the loss of Bauhaus, the combination of Dumoulin and Rolland make Yellow Knight the top riser (11 places) of the day.

Stage 19 Yo-yos, and yo-yos that snap.

More than 90% of us feeling that our choice is vindicated, even if not in the way we expected.

Since Gaviria stopped gaining points, his teams have retained the top 6 spots in this ranking, but 2 of them, those with less mountain support, have dropped to 10th and 12th.

Pink points
Gaps near the top close again without change of positions, apart from the most important position swap there is.  But only one team able to gain from that, and one that suffers.  Kruijswijk's fall is more significant in our game than Dumoulin's.

Standings

It was not a good day for the leader on the road, but it was in this game.  If it looked uncertain that there was a way to shake Dumoulin yesterday, it looks more so the case for Fauniera here.

Of the top 4 plus one other that I posted team details of  as top contenders on Monday, Fauniera remains top, but the others have dropped to 8th, 12, 22nd and 42nd.

So which teams and riders now pose a threat to the team that has been top since Kangert's argument with road furniture affected the 5 teams that had been above him at the start of stage 15.

The lead is beyond that which is likely to be made up simply by stage finish points, but after significant top 10 GC variation, the gaps could  be tiny.

Landa is ubiquitous, and therefore irrelevant to the battle, and Gaviria will surely not add to his haul..  Fauniera is really only vulnerable if Nibali moves up and Pinot does not, but a repeat today of stage 19 for Dumoulin, or Time Trial overhauling of Quintana, means that that is far from impossible.

If Nibali and Pinot both get improvements in standing ( as in the above two scenarios, but more extreme) then Crevaison will come into play, especially if one of those expensive, one team riders who are currently first and second fall far enough to Zakarin to overtake them and make the podium.

If Nibali moves up, but Pinot stays off the podium, then we are probably looking at Zakarin trying to get 28 seconds from Pinot (on the last 14km today or the time trial) as the battle between Squire and those on the virtual podium as it stands.

But this is cycling: anything can happen.

I  wrote all that without having read of Kruijswijk's DNS today.

That really removes GodChild and Squire from the reckoning: so Pinot is key for Fauniera and Crevaison, Nibali for GPBlanco and Crevaison, and Zakarin for Crevaison.  If there is success for Nibali, then stage points still hold the balance.

What was that last sentence in my previous post?

So Kruijswijk loses the 135 projected points for 10th place, to the detriment of 25 teams, and riders below him each move up a bit granting some compensation, mainly to the benefit of Formolo teams.

New top ten, sans Kruijswijk:
1   Fauniera   1740   (holds position)
2   GPBlanco   1642   (holds position)
3   Crevaison   1570   ( up from 5th)
4=   Hakkie2   1510   (up from 7th)
4=   Jakob747   1510   (up from 8)
6   AG   1484   (was 9th)
7   GodChild   1478   (was 3rd)
8   SafeBet   1472   (was 11th)
9   Squire   1468   (was 4th)

Standings with one stage, and one big shake-up, to come

Crevaison leaps from 5th to second, and is the only real challenger, I would suggest, to Fauniera, though I reckon Pinot's win today will have been enough to keep Fauniera safe.  Del 1962, Hugo87, Safebet and Leadbelly are new entries to the top ten as the Kruijswijk teams tumble.  Scrool07 has the biggest (16 place) rise, and Yellow Knight will gain that honour tomorrow.

The top two will both lose points tomorrow (as Dumoulin overtakes them), and Crevaison has 2 riders vulnerable to being overtaken by Dumoulin. Also in Fauniera's favour is that Pinot overhauling Nibali is neutral to Crevaison (who has both), but advantageous to Fauniera.
But there is a way in for Crevaison, if we were to end up with a Dumoulin-Nibali-Zakarin podium.  I'm also assuming that Pozzovivo can hang on to his minute and a half over Mollema, but if that does not happen, that would be a 25 point swing to Crevaison which might bring it into stage points range to decide.

If you want to examine other permutations, here's the spreadsheet (https://www.dropbox.com/s/2evfzybjmcf3yxr/Giro%202017%20CQ%20game.xls?dl=0).

Stage 21  Pink points

More losses than gains to finish off, but your rivals might have lost points too.

Final positions

In the end, Fauniera only had one rider overtaken by Dumoulin and Crevaison had two, and so the winning margin more than doubled on the last day.  AG, Hakkie2 and Leadbelly have some promotion within the top ten, and Squire replaces Hugo87 to get into the final top 10.  Inevitably, Yellow Knight is the Dumoulin-powered top riser of the day, but for the only team with the race winner to end up 35th of 46 (and that with the advantage of 162 pink jersey wearer bonus points), and the only team with the rider 2nd in GC to be only 2 places better off, shows that this was an unusual edition of the game.

Congratulations to Fauniera and rest of the podium, and thanks to all for joining in.

1 place off top 1/3 of the field: better than my usual.

I'll do a bit of rider data crunching tonight or tomorrow.

Some number crunching:

Best scoring riders:
(at least a stage win worth of points)

The overwhelming favourite to win was simply deemed too expensive by nearly everyone, and the one who did win was several hundred points dearer than riders who most pundits thought had a better chance.
Pinot finished behind Nibali, but gets the podium of point earners through better stage placings.  Gaviria and Landa (on plan B) are the main riders whose place points are more important than GC.

Best Possible team
My record for doing this accurately is not good, and if there is a way of getting Excel to work it out definitively I don't know it, so the best I can come up with is:

DUMOULIN Tom
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
LANDA MEANA Mikel
POLANC Jan
PÖSTLBERGER Lukas
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar
DE PLUS Laurens
PETILLI Simone
PLAZA MOLINA Ruben

for a total of 2248 (and a popularity score that would have been the second lowest)

Not really related to this game, but for the last few GTs I have set up a ninja thread: highest placed rider with no daily top ten placing: it was Hubert Dupont in 19th place.
