Title: 2017 Tour de France CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on June 26, 2017, 07:35
Many of you will be expecting this: here it is.

What you need to do
*Choose 9 riders taking part in the Tour.
*Ensure that the total "cost" of your team is 4000 pts or fewer, using the CQ ranking over 12 months to 25th June as the price for each rider.
*PM your team to me, using the CQ name format (surname, then forename, nothing else, no team no price), by start of the race (15:15 German time on Sat 1 July)
*Check the list of entries at the end of this opening post, and nudge me if your name does not appear within 24  of submitting it.
*Hope that your team gains more CQ points during the race than any other.
*Enjoy.

What I'll do
*I'll check that your 9 riders are taking part, and that the team is within budget.  If you submit the team in good time, I'll let you know if there are problems with your selection.
*If you are over budget, I'll take out the cheapest rider who can be replaced with a cheaper member of his team that will bring you into budget: if you pick someone who is not riding, I'll replace him with the next cheapest of his team, or the next cheapest in the race if there is not one in his team.
*I'll assist you in collating a team by putting up a spreadsheet on dropbox with the riders named to start and their prices: Here it is (https://www.dropbox.com/s/smekzdabro0hy1g/Tour%202017%20team%20selector.xlsx?dl=0), with apologies for the delay.
*I'll smile gratefully and be relieved if you submit your name in the proper CQ format: I will gnash my teeth and curse quietly if you don't, and might ask you to send it again, especially if you are an old hand at the game.
*I'll allocate points as issued by CQ for the race: there are points for all finishers, with a sliding scale of points for those finishing 1st to 50th; for the top ten in each stage , the yellow jersey wearer each day, and top ten in green and polka-dot (but not white) jersey competitions:full points here (http://www.cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/rules.asp).
*I'll post the teams and some analysis of them on Saturday once entries are closed.
*I'll put up (real life permitting) daily updates of a green jersey classification and the main (yellow jersey) standings.
*I'll update the list of entries in this opening post at least once a day during the build up to the race (that was DJW, duly sent).
*I'll send my team to the first manager to submit a team lest anyone think I am stealing their ideas.
*I'll despair quietly as my team drops into lower half of the table obscurity by the middle of week two, as it so often has before.

What we will need to do collectively
Think about whether we want/need to change the format of the game next year to reflect the move from 9-man to 8-man teams.  There is no reason why the team size in the game must reflect the teams in real life, but maybe some people like to compare.  The main options would be a) keep everything as it is; b) reduce to teams of 8, with a corresponding change in budget (4000*8/9 = 3556, so 3500 or 3600); or c) change to 8 riders but keep the budget as it is.  Thoughts?

Entrants To just after midnight (BST) on Saturday morning (just): 14 hours (I think) from the datestamp on this post for 11th hour entries.

Still no update from CQ, so I can't put up the team selection spreadsheet yet, but hopefully it will be not too late tomorrow.  Maybe Quickstep will have finalised their team by then too...

But then I always do, right up until the end of the first stage.

I've had my first go at putting a team together and yet again I have to many #cannondale riders in it than can be good.

Back to the drawing board/spreadsheet.

I just took the 10 minutes time to put the values together manually. Hope this is correct:

You must have some short cut to do that in 10 minutes: I used it to update the selection spreadsheet, and then just as I was about to post it, I see CQ have finally uploaded the sheet.

Great job, you had 2 errors, but one of them was on the (probably, someone might think otherwise) prohibitively expensive Van Avermaet, and the other on the high on nobody's must have list Gastauer.  I have edited them on your post above.

ah, thanks, must have been some kind of type.

and well, I did the start list yesterday - and today, with the cq team sheets open on a second screen, it really didn't take much more time than that

The spreadsheet is finally up: many thanks to Search, because if CQ had been any slower, I could have used his data very happily.

Here is the selector tool (https://www.dropbox.com/s/smekzdabro0hy1g/Tour%202017%20team%20selector.xlsx?dl=0), hope it is useful. (and now with Zubeldia in and Cardoso out)

Sceptical or not, you were the first manager to send in a team, so you have supervision rights over my honesty.

Only 15 teams up to early on Friday morning, which is a bit disappointing.

This will bump it up the board as a reminder to others.

56 of the 198 riders are represented among those 15 teams: 2 are on 10 or more teams, 2 more on more than half, and there are 31 unique picks.

A day and a bit to go, let's get those entries in, before the first man rolls down the ramp in Dusseldorf...

I am a glutton for punishment - my team is in... perhaps AC will look kindly on me adn loose my entry... but then id always wonder if this was a worthwhile 10 mins (including creating, sending to AC and writing this)

Its so hard with 4000 Velogames is easy with 100

Noooooooooo its hard enough

and have "the other two" far supperior races always had less than the tour?

I mentioned it when I put my half a team in earlier.
This time was much, much harder than the Giro.
Virtually everybody worthwhile costs around 4 figures or more.

These GT games were, IIRC, started by a contributor called CQManager, with the Giro in (I think) 2012 and a 3500 budget.  When it came around to the Tour, there was discussion about the budget, and there was some kind of consensus about having more spending power for the Tour than for the other GTs.   I kept those settings when I took over.

when we go to 8 riders - instead of all the math going on in the background... just bring the tour down to match the rest ( as i think at least 80% of us acknowledge the tour is pants) and thats that.

there I've solved it  :s :D

Rider popularity

26 (out of 38) teams: VOECKLER Thomas
22: BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
20: ARU Fabio
19: MEINTJES Louis
16: KITTEL Marcel
16: TULIK Angelo
12: KISERLOVSKI Robert
12: PORTE Richie
11: BOUDAT Thomas
11: NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel

From those 10, I had to drop Porte to create the highest possible popularity score team within budget as the Collective Wisdom squad.  (That team is however about 700 below budget, and with Porte in place of Boudat it would be about would be about 700 over: I might see if I can set up a compromise with a score that averages out the contributions of Porte and Boudat)

Other frequencies of selection:
9: CINK Ondrej, POLJANSKI Pawel
7: BUCHMANN Emanuel
6: BARGUIL Warren, BOZIC Borut, BRAJKOVIC Janez, PAUWELS Serge
5: BARDET Romain, KREUZIGER Roman, MCLAY Daniel
4: BEVIN Patrick, BROWN Nathan, CAVENDISH Mark, DE GENDT Thomas, GESBERT Elie, SEPULVEDA Eduardo, SWIFT Ben
3: AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey, CUMMINGS Stephen, FUGLSANG Jakob, LATOUR Pierre, MAJKA Rafal, TALANSKY Andrew, URAN URAN Rigoberto
2: BRAMBILLA Gianluca, CIMOLAI Davide, CLARKE Simon, DE MARCHI Alessandro, DELAGE Mickaël, FROOME Chris, GESINK Robert, GROENEWEGEN Dylan, KNEES Christian, KOZHATAYEV Bakhtiyar, KÜNG Stefan, LAPORTE Christophe, MACHADO Tiago Jose Pinto, MARTIN Guillaume, NIEVE ITURRALDE Mikel, PINOT Thibaut, ROLLAND Pierre, SICARD Romain, ZABEL Rick

The 26 unique picks are indicated in the previous post.

Major picks

Mid-price picks, apart from youngsters Meintjes and Buchmann, have not been a big factor in many teams.  Most of us found little value in that price range, so even more than usual this edition is about picking your main man/men, some potential breakaway points among the inexpensive, and cheap as possible makeweights who might get 20 points for finishing.

So if we consider anyone costing >2x the average budget per rider (which is 888 pts or more, but I've also included Cavendish @885), who has gone for whom?

(Ordered by price of most expensive rider)

Froome:      Armchair Cyclist
   with Cavendish:   Bicycle Boy

Porte:      AG   Capt Cavman   Del1963   Josedin
with Bardet:   Blues in the Bottle
   with Aru:   Hakkie2   Los Brolin
   with Kittel:   Bikeracer33
with Aru and Kittel:   Just Some Guy   Kabete   Shalgo
with Kittel and Groenewegen:   Geraint TooFast

Contador   with Cavendish:   Scrool07

Martin D    with Aru:   Laarsland

Demare:      Rote Laterne

Bardet         with Majka:   Al Pacino
   with Aru:   Amis Velo
   with Fuglsang:   DJW
   with Aru and Kittel:   Hugo87

Izaguirre   with Majka and Kittel:   LightBing

Roglic   with Kittel:   ThePirate81

Majka   with Aru:   Comodoro

Bouhanni   with Pinot:   Trudgin

Aru:      Carlo Algatrensig   Vladimir
with Kittel:   Fauniera   GPBlanco   Minessa   Search   Squire
   with Fuglsang:   LeadBelly
with Kittel and Fuglsang:   Mellow Velo
With Pinot and Cavendish:   Yellow Knight
   with Greipel and Cavendish:   RattaKuningas

Kittel:      Hayabusa
   with Groenewegen:   Kazistuta

Stage 1 Dusseldorf Time Trial

Green Jersey competition
These are the guaranteed points that your rider will get even if he fails to reach Paris.  They are earned from top ten stage finishes and earning the yellow jersey.

THOMAS Geraint   100   1   team
KÜNG Stefan   50   2   teams
KIRYIENKA Vasil   35   0   team
MARTIN Tony   25   1   team
TRENTIN Matteo   15   0   team
FROOME Chris   10   2   teams
VAN EMDEN Jos   5   0   team
KWIATKOWSKI Michal   3   0   team
KITTEL Marcel   2   16   teams
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald   1   0   team

And it should be obvious which teams get their points from which riders:
1   CaptCavman   100
2   GPBlanco   52
3   Josedin   50
4   AG   25
5=   Armchair_Cyclist, BicycleBoy   10
7   Bikeracer33, Fauniera, GeraintTooFast, Hayabusa, Hugo87, JustSomeGuy, Kabete, Kazistuta, LightBing, Mellow_Velo, Minessa, Search, Shalgo, Squire, ThePirate81   2

It'll be some time before I can post the (rather pointless at this stage) Yellow Jersey points.

It is at times like these that one must overcome the urge to be incredibly smug. It's difficult though...

Stage 1  update 2
Yellow Points

This is what the game is really about: this includes the guaranteed points above, but also points according to the riders' current standing in the GC, the points competition and (but not yet) the KoM ranking.  As riders, like investments, can fall in these rankings, so daily updates can have negative scores.

What the scores are at this stage is essentially double daily rankings (because the points ranking is obviously the same as the daily ranking today), plus the GC rankings, from 600 for Thomas to 21 for Erviti in 50th, and 20 points for every rider below that.

1   CaptCavman   999
2   GPBlanco   874
3   Josedin   803
4   AG   669
5   Armchair_Cyclist   522
6   BicycleBoy   440
7   Bikeracer33   420
8   Minessa   367
9   Shalgo   352
10   GeraintTooFast   346
10   JustSomeGuy   346
10   Kabete   346
13   Fauniera   344
13   Hayabusa   344
13   Hugo87   344
13   Kazistuta   344
13   Mellow_Velo   344
13   Search   344
13   Squire   344
13   ThePirate81   344
21   LightBing   324
22   Del1962   273
23   Scrool07   270
24   Trudgin   269
25   Rote_Laterne   260
26   Vladimir   225
27   Carlo_Algatrensig   203
27   Comodoro   203
27   Leadbelly   203
30   BluesInTheBottle   182
30   Hakkie2   182
30   LosBrolin   182
33   Al_Pacino   180
33   AmisVelo   180
33   DJW   180
33   Laarsland   180
33   RattaKuningas   180
33   Yellow_Knight   180
   Collective_Wisdom   345

I did, as I proposed above, make a compromise for the Collective Wisdom team.  The top 9 in popularity would be way over budget, but swapping out Porte and putting in one of the next riders down left the team way below budget.  So I have half of Porte's cost (and points earned), and half those of Dani Navarro,  The total cost of the team thus made is slightly over budget (4031 pts), but it gives a point of comparison.  (Such chimeric selections as Portvarro will not be available to managers in future editions of the game)

As I was compiling the tables, I couldn't help noticing that one of your main targets in these games was being missed.  You only came 3rd on the originality (reverse popularity) ranking, and only 2 UPs, beaten twice and matched four times.  Your traditional eccentricity seems to have abandoned you.

Kittel and Kung together put GPBlanco  over the 1000 mark (for now)

I was pleased to see that the results sheet at letour.com is a csv table: that'll save a lot of time and correction of CN's vagaries and inconsistencies.

Most working days, I'll try to avoid hearing the results and watch the ITV4 highlights at 7pm, and do the update after that, so don't expect it much before 9pm (UK time) most days.

I'll keep a working copy of the spreadsheet at Dropbox, so you can investigate further here. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/bxk5rjby7e84nk4/tour%202017%20cq%20game%20working%20copy.xlsx?dl=0)

Yellow points

Daily change: significant changes as many who didn't fancy the final charge drop rapidly down the rankings, and climbers and puncheurs move up past them.

Sorry guys, BT have managed to leave me without internet for up to 48 hours, and running the game from my phone is not feasible.  Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

EDIT: They got the engineer out within 2 hours rather than 24-48 as estimated: well done BT

Yellow Points
The main changes yesterday arose from everyone bar the top three moving up one spot to account for Sagan's removal, or moving up points rankings.  Kittel's loss of the green jersey is the only appreciable loss.

The GC shakedown today will see the table considerably changed tonight.  The 4 Cavendish teams will have to look to GC rather than sprint points from here on.

Stage 6 Enjoy Troyes

Green points

Most of those who went for a big name sprinter seem to have got the right one

KITTEL Marcel   80   16   teams
DEMARE Arnaud   50   1   team
GREIPEL André   35   1   team
KRISTOFF Alexander   25   0   team
FROOME Chris   20   2   teams
BOUHANNI Nacer   15   1   team

MATTHEWS Michael   5   0   team
MCLAY Daniel   3   5   teams
SELIG Rüdiger   2   0   team
DEGENKOLB John   1   0   team

With Meintjes as his main GC pick, and a team that includes Kittel, Groenewegen, McLay, Boudat and Swift, Kazistuta seems to be targetting this classification rather than the main, Yellow points, game.

1   Kazistuta   93 (Kittel, Groenewegen and McLay)
2   GeraintTooFast   90 (Kittel + Groenewegen)

How the flip did i go from 9th to last???

Not sure whether that was a rhetorical question, but essentially while everyone else had GC contenders passing non-climbers on the way to La Planche des Belles Filles, you had Latour losing whatever advantage he had from the time trial.

The top three this morning all suffer through Porte's misfortune, and despite having Uran, Laarsland cannot capitalise to move up from 4th.  The three teams immediately below him this morning are all now above him; Amis Velo, Mellow Velo, Leadbelly and Vladimir all move into the top ten, but none of them can match DJW's 18 place jump.

(Big news: possibility of the top non Kitteller overtaking the lowest Kitteller in this ranking tomorrow!)

Yellow points

Once the "heads of state" are at the top of GC rankings, subsequent changes are as much the result of failings and falls rather than active progress.  So today there are 2 main falls: Froome's hands a huge dividend to Aru (and potentially several days of 20 point bonuses); Fuglsangs gives smaller numbers of points to many riders

Standings:

Squire's lead more than doubles (from 3 points to 7) because although Fauniera's Kiserlovski moved up 2 places to 46th, Brajkovic went up from 45th to 39th.  The gap between the two riders who are probably unaware that the game rests on their relative performances has gone out to 5:38 today.

Amis Velo is the highest placed team to see any improvement in position, up 2 places to 6th, Shalgo is into the top ten, and Ratta Kuningas has the biggest (7 place) improvement.

Standings:  All the Aru teams in the top 13 dropped roughly the same number of points, so none of them changed position at all.  Hayabusa is the top placed to have moved, and Armchair Cyclist's 9 place rise is the best of the day.

But in the all important Brajkovic/Kiserlovski battle, Janez had an off day, finishing 4:45 behind his rival, and losing 3 places on GC, while Kiserlovski moves up 2 GC places.  That means there are now just 2 points between Squire and Fauniera, and 53 seconds between the two unaware protagonists.

Stage 15  Nearly mayhem in the Midi

Green points

This is where points in the Tour game are harder to come by than in the Giro/Vuelta editions.  In Mayor August, there are budget riders who might feature in such a breakaway: only one of this lot would have cost less than 300pts of your budget.

MOLLEMA Bauke   80   0   team

Standings:
Kiserlovski was in the break, and although he didn't feature in the latter stages (he was overtaken by Dan Martin near the end), he was 5'20 ahead of Brajkovic, whom he overtakes, as well as a few others, thus boosting Fauniera ahead of Search.  Amis Velo also moves up to the virtual podium.  Pirate81, Los Brolin and Comodoro all moved up 2 spots, nobody did more.

Rest Day 2

So where have all those points come from?

Green points
Unlike the green jersey IRL, this catgory yields the same amount of points every day: 80 to the stage winner down to 1 for tenth, plus 20 point bonus for whoever receives the yellow that evening (no bonus next Sunday though)

Looking at this, its no wonder that those with Kittel and Aru dominate (No-one combines Kittel with Froome or Demare):
1   KITTEL Marcel   402   16   teams
2   FROOME Chris   275   2   teams
3   MATTHEWS Michael   202   0   team
4   DEMARE Arnaud   190   1   team
5   ARU Fabio   182   20   teams
6   THOMAS Geraint   164   1   team
7   BARGUIL Warren   145   6   teams
8   URAN URAN Rigoberto   138   3   teams
9   BOASSON HAGEN Edvald   122   0   team
10   BARDET Romain   120   5   teams
10   GROENEWEGEN Dylan   120   2   teams
12   KRISTOFF Alexander   115   0   team
13   GREIPEL André   112   1   team
14   MARTIN Daniel   110   1   team
15   CALMEJANE Lilian   85   0   team
16   SAGAN Peter   81   0   team
17   MOLLEMA Bauke   80   0   team

Yellow Points
This includes the above, but also points for the mountain and points categories in the same distribution as for a stage, and the GC standings points: 600 for first, then 450, 380, 320, 290 down to 21 for 50th and 20 for all finishers below that.

1   FROOME Chris   887   2   teams
2   ARU Fabio   636   20   teams
3   KITTEL Marcel   502   16   teams
4   BARDET Romain   500   5   teams
5   URAN URAN Rigoberto   458   3   teams
6   MARTIN Daniel   408   1   team
7   BARGUIL Warren   345   6   teams
8   LANDA MEANA Mikel   338   0   team
9   MATTHEWS Michael   272   0   team
10   YATES Simon   257   0   team
11   CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto   220   1   team
12   MEINTJES Louis   215   19   teams
13   QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   193   0   team
14   DEMARE Arnaud   190   1   team
15   GREIPEL André   167   1   team
16   THOMAS Geraint   164   1   team
17   KRISTOFF Alexander   160   0   team
17   CARUSO Damiano   160   0   team
19   BOASSON HAGEN Edvald   152   0   team
20   GROENEWEGEN Dylan   145   2   teams

The problem that most managers found was selecting any riders who were inexpensive but had much point winning potential.  The average budget per rider was 444, so moderately expensive picks (between average and 2x average spend) could have yielded:
URAN URAN Rigoberto   458   3   teams
LANDA MEANA Mikel   338   0   teams
MEINTJES Louis   215   19   teams
THOMAS Geraint   164   1   teams
CARUSO Damiano   160   0   teams
BENNETT George   138   1   teams
CALMEJANE Lilian   134   0   teams
LATOUR Pierre   110   3   teams
GALLOPIN Tony   90   0   teams
BUCHMANN Emanuel   88   7   teams

Spending between average and half of that offered little earning power, with one notable exception:
BARGUIL Warren   345   6   teams
VUILLERMOZ Alexis   109   0   team
MARTIN Guillaume   107   2   teams
NIEVE ITURRALDE Mikel   101   2   teams
ROCHE Nicolas   76   0   team
KREUZIGER Roman   72   5   teams
KÜNG Stefan   70   2   teams
PAUWELS Serge   66   6   teams
BAKELANTS Jan   62   1   team
KIRYIENKA Vasil   55   0   team
SELIG Rüdiger   52   0   team
HARDY Romain   52   0   team

And the riders half of budget or below, who we all have to look at to be able to afford the top men, have had very little to offer, most of us having at least opted for the best return available:
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto   82   22   teams
FEILLU Brice   77   0   teams
NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel   47   11   teams
DEGAND Thomas   39   0   teams
GASTAUER Ben   37   0   teams
KISERLOVSKI Robert   35   12   teams
BROWN Nathan   34   4   teams
BRAJKOVIC Janez   31   6   teams
CIMOLAI Davide   30   2   teams
GAUTIER Cyril   30   0   teams
MOINARD Amaël   24   0   teams
VANSPEYBROUCK Pieter   23   0   teams

Stage 16 echelons, ish

Yellow points
Aru is the most selected rider among GC contenders, so many teams had a poor day today.  Almost as many lose Kittel's leadership of the points classification.

Standings
Kiserlovski now has about 3 minutes over Brajkovic: if Squire is to make up ground, it might have to be through Tulik, Poljanski or Bevin (or a DNF for Voeckler, Boudat or Kozhatayev).  Laarsland overtakes Hugo87, placing the three Uran teams in the top 4.  Although Froome is the rider who least obviously gained points from Aru's difficulties, but the two biggest risers are the two who invested in him: Armchair up 8 to 7th, and Bicycle Boy up 10 spots.  6 and 7 place leaps respectively bring The Pirate81 and AlPacino into the top ten as well as Armchair.
