Title: Stage 1 - Nîmes > Nîmes

Stage 1 Vuelta a Espana - Nîmes > Nîmes 13.7km

After yesterday's farcical/totally radical (delete as appropriate) team presentation, we get to the first stage and the usual TTT of yet another Vuelta a Espana. There's something a bit different though. We're not in Spain!

This will be only the third time that it has started outside it's borders. The first time it happened was in 1997 when they ventured into Portugal (Lars Michaelsen won that day) and the only other time was in 2009 when the Netherlands came calling (Cancellara winning the prologue).

Quote from: Fernando Escartin
TTT. The Nîmes time trial will be very technical: the teams will have to ride through the streets in the old  part of the city, right through the heart of historical buildings. The key will lie in being completely in sync from the very beginning, maintaining a very high speed and making sure that each and every rider does his job well in each section of the stage.

Thanks for that insight Fernando and it does look a bit technical. Quite a few long straights, but interspersed with hairpins and chicanes. Difficult to keep as a solid train with all the slowing down and accelerating.

There is a KoM about halfway through, but I can't see anyone targeting it and doing a positive split. They might as well have had the hill one kilometre into the course and let the Cajas or Cannondales of this world who don't really care about the GC have a shot at getting it. Stage two has zero climbs, so whoever gets it will wear it for a couple of days.

ps. As far as I'm aware the route will pass through the Arene de Nimes and hence why I'm using an image of it and the statue. Be prepared for Carlton shoehorning in as many bull fighting analogies as he can.

The final start list is out, so it's time for...........

Leadbelly's Leading Lights

:onfire1 :onfire1 :onfire1

BMC

I don't think the two star teams will be too far behind, but BMC are the kings of TTT and they have the biggest engine in Dennis who can do what Cancellara and Martin used to do. Ventoso for red (if he can hang on!).

:onfire1 :onfire1

Quickstep Floors
Sky

:onfire1

Sunweb
Trek
FDJ

Once past the top three, there's a bit of a gap. Quite a few teams who normally you'd say would do a good TTT, but they just don't have the right riders here. Sunweb probably the best of the rest.

:dizzy

Caja-Rural

The bookies have Manzana as the rank outsiders, but I think ol' Caja could finish bottom of the pile.

It's windy today in Nîmes, with gusts ~ 13 m/s. Let's check the chart

It's a Tramontane day!  :cool tomorrow too looks windy now....

On a circular TTT course there will not be that many attacks but watch out for featherweight climbers on disc wheels! Rumours about riders crashing on warm-up....

#jumbo Lotto-Jumbo got to be the most unstable TT team ever, what are they riding?

#jumbo Lotto-Jumbo got to be the most unstable TT team ever, what are they riding?

It was a weird one, just looked like his front wheel locked and over the handlebars he went.

I only saw the last two thirds of today's stage, but amazingly enough Leadbelly's Leading Lights weren't too far off from reality. Pleased that Manzana got the better of ol' Caja, but I had discounted the sailors of the good ship Cofidis.

Trentin could potentially get red tomorrow, but it's unlikely. Can't find the exact times yet to see if taking 6 bonus seconds would be enough for him to overtake Dennis, but a much more likely scenario is a different BMC rider taking it on cumulative placings.
