Title: 2018-20 Emerging Riders CQ game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on December 31, 2017, 22:16
Cast your mind back to January 2015.  How many of the following might you have expected to accumulate 900 CQ points or more between then and now?  If you had managed all of them, you would have had the perfect score for the 2015-17 game.  That is the challenge of the Emerging riders Game: what riders who currently have a lifetime total of fewer than 200 CQ points will score best by the end  of 2020?

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
NAESEN Oliver
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
MOSCON Gianni
LATOUR Pierre
MARECZKO Jakub
CALMEJANE Lilian
KÜNG Stefan

BUCHMANN Emanuel
CLAEYS Dimitri
BETTIOL Alberto
MCLAY Daniel

ANDERSEN Søren Kragh
CAMPENAERTS Victor
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley

Your Team  18 riders, no budget restriction except that which applies to each rider.

Rider Eligibility  Any rider who has a maximum of 199 CQ points through their career, so long as that title is not kept low because of results removed under doping sanctions. Here is a list of some who have appeared on CQ in recent years and are eligible (https://www.dropbox.com/s/70o6mb5j4v86e6w/Riders%20eligible%20for%202018%20Emerging%20game.xlsx?dl=0), but it is not exclusive or exhaustive.  When the Main Game and Youth Game teams are announced, I'll try to make a list of riders named therein that are eligible: that might be more manageable than this huge list.

Submitting your team  PM to me, by the end of January (I operate on GMT/UTC), with just the rider names in CQ format.

My team hasn't yet been decided, but I will do it in the next day or two, and will send it to the first manager to submit a team (which seems likely to be Rote Laterne), but I reserve the right to adjust it in the case of a rider emerging Gaviria-like before the deadline.

Scoring CQ points over the next three years, the end of 2020 update being the end.  I might need to be alerted to points from one year  that are deleted the next.  I'll give updates monthly (at least that is the intention)

Entries Teams up to up to the original deadline: about ten hours from the datestamp on this post, but your team can't be checked (Bit of an extension, see latest post).

Monsieur Hulot, a new poster at CN, has made a spreadsheet that you may find helpful, totalling CQ scores from 2012 to 2017, and available  here on Dropbox. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/shu1h3pp0ehz37b/Riders%20for%202018-2020%20game.xls?dl=0)  On the grounds that likely picks for the Emerging Riders game are unlikely to have scored much before 2012, and with the warning that a few riders have not had their names treated consistently down the years by CQ, I recommend it.

I've got mine in as well now. Same format as last with only CT riders or lower. Probably the same result at the end of the first year too.

Still plenty of time for entries, but for those who consider the several thousand rider strong lists of eligible riders a bit intimidating, here is a list of those selected for either the Youth or zero pointer game that are eligible for this one.  There might, of course, be great picks for this game who were either ineligible or overlooked for those games. If you are in a hurry, just harvest 18 names from this list: someone has thought they have some promise.

I never said it was a recommendation...

There are many, many riders eligible for this game who were not allowable in either of those games, some of whom are among the 84 riders already selected, but this might help build a long-list for some entrants.

So far I have received 19 teams (listed in the opening post), including 5 who were not in the previous edition.  Between them they have chosen 94 different riders in whom to invest their hopes, 42 of whom are unique picks, and 8 are on more than half the teams.

The current Collective Wisdom selection would have a popularity score of 172, while the popularity range for the entered teams ranges from 158 to 48.

You have until the last instant of January (UK time/UTC) to submit or adjust your team: that is 3 days 11 hours and 17 minutes by the timestamp of this post lest there be any time-zone confusion.

I think I know 13½ of those riders. :P

Might be able to work it out fully out if I checked the years of birth.

So there has been a bit of a family emergency arise, and I am going to head directly from work to a relative 2 1/2 hours away tomorrow, and won't be back until late: too late to start formatting and posting teams and calculating popularity data.  It also means that I won't be able to check eligibility of the teams that come in between 8am and midnight. (Teams listed in the OP are checked and all OK)

So if you send your team in tomorrow (unless very early) you wouldn't have any chance to change your team (if necessary).  I will therefore extend until midday (UK time) on Thursday so that if my late night check on Wednesday reveals any problems they can be changed until then.  And so I may as well allow entries until midday Thursday if you are happy to run the risk of riders being rejected, and I'll ask all to hold off until then on releasing your teams.  I will do the usual team listings and number crunching late afternoon/early evening on Thursday.
;
Short version: Deadline is midnight if you hope I'll check it, or noon Thursday if you are confident you will get it right. No publishing teams until Thurs afternoon (all times GMT)

So here we go:

No new entries during the extension, but one team made a couple of changes, and another decided to join the rest of us in having 18 riders.

34 teams it is then, and here they are, alphabetically sorted.  As usual, unique picks, 52 of them, indicated by an asterisk.

The January effect
There is always a bit of a January races effect in this game, and although I didn't keep a strict record, there were some definite shifts in emphasis.

Hodeg and Ganna were both fairly popular even before the San Juan race, although Ganna did increase his proportion of teams and prompted a couple of swaps. Najar, not surprisingly, was not in any teams until he had a guaranteed 142 points.  Even if he does nothing else for 3 years, he would probably not be the lowest scoring rider on most teams.

Madouas looked like he was going to be a unique pick until he got a flurry of support after La Marseillaise, and although most entries came in long after the Vuelta a Tachira, Sosa received several late selections and overhauled Rivera who had been well ahead of him on picks.

Some riders became more or less relatively popular even without having raced in January.  McNulty became popular from a very low start, Riabushenko was popular, but always behind Jakobsen and Narvaez until the last day or two, and Eg was ahead of everyone for most of January, but not as fancied in the late rush.

Kicking yourself or gloating
Bjerg is the rider I am most annoyed at myself for missing: not sure how I let him slip under my radar.  Who is your facepalm rider?

And who is an absolute banker for being successful in the course of the three years (let's define that as definitely over 1000 points over the three years: that should assure him of being one of the best possible 18)?

Have another go?
Last year Albanese was almost universally selected, this year he is on just over half the teams.  Should a rider (any rider, not just Albanese) be considered a failure who lacks the potential he was thought to have if he is still eligible a year later; or is it a great opportunity to harvest year 4 scores for a rider who would probably have been good enough  just on the basis of his first three senior years?  And likewise, is it worth passing over a rider in the hope that you will be able to select him next year?

The January effect
I only started picking my team this week (yes, really).
Filippo Ganna would have been high up on the list anyway, but his performance in San Juan ensured that he was 100% in.
Najar I wouldn't have dreamt of including, and his San Juan performance, if anything, only dissuaded me more.
The Antipodean rider picked up their usual early-season points, and though I picked two Aussies, that was based on their year-round point-scoring potential (though those first couple of points don't hurt).

Kicking yourself or gloating
Looking at the popularity ranking, I'm pretty satisfied. All 18 riders in the Collective Wisdom were on my shortlist, and I picked eight of them. The other ten I chose to leave out for various reasons: I expect them to not score highly in what's often their neo-pro year or another year on the U23 circuit, meaning that they should still be available next year. Sometimes I had to pick between two riders and went with the one where I had more belief he'd break the 200-point barrier (and yes, that includes Brendon Davids; just you see).
Other times, I picked riders closer to home over those I'm not as familiar with - there's a reason I have six Danes.
I have to say that I'm astounded that Gregaard and Vingegaard are unique picks. But I certainly don't mind!

The most-popular rider that slipped below my radar is #movistar Jaime Castrillo. Until today, I've genuinely never heard of the guy. He'll probably go on to win Burgos, Avenir & a half-dozen other races in 2018 now that I've said that before taking Catalunya & Route du Sud in 2019 and his maiden Vuelta in 2020. :lol

And there's probably a handful of riders that none of us picked who will develop into world-beaters within the next three years. But as long as nobody else spotted their potential, I'm fine with that. :P

Have another go?
I wouldn't consider such a rider a failure. However, I would very much consider my picking him the year before an act of stupidity. In this game, I'm ruthless: I don't want to identify the next trusty domestique who picks up 40-60 CQ points every year. I want to pick the next world-beater. So if I pick a rider and he then dabbles along for the first two of the three years before finally scoring >400 points in year 3, that was just not a great pick.

Though it would still be a better pick than Andrea Zordan whom I chose ahead of the 2014 season and who went on to score a total of five points in the following three seasons, retiring at the end of 2016. :fp :D

At least we are all off the mark (and the spreadsheet works)

There will always be those who we all managed to miss.  You might have riders in your team who by the end of three years have still scored less than the likes of:
PHOUNSAVATH DESTRIBOIS Alex Ariya      113 from Tour of Indonesia
HARPER Chris      101 from Aussie nationals and Herald Sun
KIPKEMBOI Salim      101 from Sharjah and Tropicale Amissa Bongo
CHAWCHIANGKUANG Peerapol      100 also Tour of Indonesia

And the spreadsheet is here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/gwzfm3rrnaotbdw/Emerging%20CQ%202018%20to%202020.xlsx?dl=0), and its updates will be here each month though I might not always publish the link.

*la Phounsavath & *th Chawchiangkuang aren't going to become grand pros, I think. Winning and placing in the Tour of Indonesia will most likely be the pinnacle of their careers (as winning San Juan will be the pinnacle of Najar's career - provided he even keeps that).

But missing *au Harper & *ke Kipkemboi might come back to haunt us - if only in the bragging rights game.

Indeed: I'm not saying that our lengthily named friends are going to be stars of the game, but in the recently finished 2015-17 edition, there were an average of >2.25 riders per team who got less than 100 points in the entire game.  Only 5 of 33 teams had no-one in that category.  So even if this pair score nothing more this side of 2021, they might prove to be better picks than at least one rider in your team, or mine, or any other (probably better than several of mine).

Standings

The Asian moves up from 6th to take the lead, and is sweating under two yellow jerseys, as he also leads the 2017-19 version.  Kryvo was immediately ahead of him, now immediately behind in second, having dislodged Scrool, who hangs onto his podium place ahead of Skidmark, who makes an impressive jump from 12th.  Also bursting into the top ten are Flo, on the back of a 7 place rise, and Ludwigzgz, whose 10 place rise is matched only by monthly winner Karaev.

Last Monday passed me by without my noticing it was the first Monday (normal update schedule), and this week looks rather busy for me.  Working on these three games during the build up to, and in the duration of, the TdF game is likely to be impossible if I am to maintain a marriage. So with your forbearance (or, frankly, without it), I'll do an early-May to mid-June 'month' next week, and another 6 week 'month' ending on the first Monday of August.  Hopefully we will be back on schedule thereafter (though I won't promise that any update due mid Vuelta won't also be postponed).

This applies equally to the 2016-18 and 2017-19 editions.  If you feel I have seriously undermined your enjoyment of the games, I will reimburse 25% of your entry fee if you send me the receipt.

Enjoy the additional tension waiting to see how you have done.

Year 1 Month 8/9 7th August to 30th September  (2 months together; I was rather busy with the Vuelta game at the beginning of Sept: I think I had intended doing a mid Sept update, but that didn't happen)

There were much bigger races in this period, but some decent scores accumulated.

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      226 points (Burgos GC win, with a stage win and 2nd, and 6th in l'Avenir) for 12 teams

Year 1 Month 10/11 1st October to 18th November (and therefore effectively to the end of the season)  It didn't seem worth doing an end of October update if that left only a handful of November races to make a separate job out of.

JAKOBSEN Fabio      161 points (2 stage wins, 2 other podiums and the points win in Guangxi, 2nd in HammerHK) for 27 teams
MADOUAS Valentin      134   (Paris-Bourges win, 5th in Paris-Tours) 10 teams

Standings

The only member of the previous top ten to move upwards is Kryvo, but the two teams above him in this period, Hugo K and Scrool, move up by 5 and 4 places respectively, Hugo appearing in the top ten.  Will the riders who have not yet lived up to expectation come through in the remaining two seasons, or is the basic shape of the table already established?

Year 1  End of year

Those two managers who sought early season glory through Gonzalo Najar get their 142 points of comeupance, with popular picks Narvaez and Ganna getting 1 and 14 points respectively in the reallocation of honours in the Vuelta a San Juan.  Castrillo (6 teams) and Carretero (20 gain points from the disqualification of Igor Merino from his 8th place in the Spanish national ITT.  Blues in the Bottle has all 4 of those riders who will now feel they have a more just points haul.

So the slightly revised end of year standings, 1/3 of the way through in terms of time, although rather less than that for points, are:
1   Karaev   4687
2   Nathanptz   4590
3   Comodoro   4504
4   Kryvo   4480
5   TheAsian   4425
6   Ludwigzgz   4345
7   Fauniera   4338
8   HugoKoblet   4281
9   Squire   4271
10   Laarsland   4208
11   Scrooll07   4184
12   Skidmark   4163
13   Cordi333   4142
14   AlyKaptan   4093
15   Hakkie2   3900
16   Blues_in_the_Bottle   3856
17   Kazistuta   3844
18   RoteLaterne   3734
19   Flo   3701
20   AmisVelo   3634
21   Shalgo   3587
22   Madrazo   3506
23   Armchair_Cyclist   3491
24   Monsieur_Hulot   3468
25   Josedin   3452
26   LosBrolin   3369
27   JonEzeitza   3352
28   DJW   3129
29   Joelsim   3053
30   Vladimir   2985
31   LukasCPH   2607
32   Leadbelly   1805
33   NorthAmericanScum   1761
34   Trudgin   1392
   CollectiveWisdom   4624

Best possible team
JAKOBSEN Fabio      777points   27 teams
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      647   12
MADOUAS Valentin      561   10
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      558   22
BALLERINI Davide      508   1
POGACAR Tadej      361   16
PHILIPSEN Jasper      357   21
AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo      347   4
NARVAEZ PRADO Jhonatan Manuel      314   26
NOMMELA Aksel      310   2
VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem      308   3
JANSSENS Jimmy      290   0
ARANBURU DEBA Alex      285   0

MCNULTY Brandon      273   18
DE GENDT Aimé      271   1
HIRSCHI Marc      266   7
DENZ Nico      262   0
MÄDER Gino      255   0

TOTAL

The Collective Ignorance Team (those we all missed out on, headed by Janssens, Aranburu, Nenz and Mader) would have 4946 points, and a healthy lead.  The actual leader, Karaev, has 67.4% of the 6950 possible.

Appart from Najar, with his retracted points, 3 selected riders remain pointless (DAL-CIN Matteo, GAZZOLI Michele and PEÑA MOLANO Wilson Estiben), and among those picked ten or more times without really justifying the hype (yet: they still have 2 years to prove their worth) are ALBANESE Vincenzo, VANHOUCKE Harm, OWEN Logan and RIVERA SERRANO Kevin.  At least Albanese has now reached the 200 career total, so his repeated popularity while underacheiving will not be repeated.

Hope this whets your appetite for the new edition, so long as you think you can hold concentration until the end of 2021: official launch should be before the end of the day/year.

Don't be surprised if the March update is slightly delayed: it will be the weekend of the first races in the Spring Classics game, so I might be a bit busy with that (watch our for news of it soon), but it should appear during that first week of March.

Here is the spreadsheet,  (https://www.dropbox.com/s/gwzfm3rrnaotbdw/Emerging%20CQ%202018%20to%202020.xlsx?dl=0) but some columns are redundant or unupdated, because the first month each year requires slightly different calculation.

Pogacar looks like he is going to be a key selection in this edition, after arguably the best performance in the peloton, emerging or otherwise, this month.

Standings
8 of the top ten at the end of January were in the top ten for February, so this was more a confirmation than a shake up.  The cream may have already risen. There is some significant change though, with Comodoro making the podium, Hugo Koblet (+3) and Squire (+2) moving up within the top ten, and Laarsland (+3) joining that elite.  Although they were 16th and 20th respectively this month, a congested lower-middle table gives Los Brolin and Monsieur Hulot the honour of biggest riser (+4).

Standings

If the leader keeps on being top scorer each month, that lead will only get bigger.  Hugo, Skidmark and Laarsland all move up a place within the top ten, and Kazistuta and Cordi join that elite.  Jon Ezeitza's 4 place move is the best of the month.

Hugo Koblet and Comodoro also move up, as those who were 2nd and 3rd each fall 3 places.  Vladimir's reward for perseverance (he had Cherkasov as a UP two years in a row) is the biggest jump mention (8 spots)

Standings

With year 2 essentially over, Squire's lead is cut back somewhat, but the battle for the podium looks more interesting than that for the win.  Comodoro, Karaev and Nathan all move up, as do Laarsland and Alykaptan farther down the top ten.  Nathanptz is the only manager to have a 2 place rise anywhere in the table.

Year 2, Months 11 & 12  28 October to 31 December

As expected, not much happening at this time of year.

RAILEANU Cristian came 2nd in the Tour of Sinkarak, getting 24 points for Trudgin
EYOB Metkel       picked up 13, mainly in the Tour of Fuzhou, for Leadbelly
and AGUIRRE CALPA Hernan Ricardo got 4 points for Karaev, Ludwigzgz, Monsieur Hulot and Rote Laterne for no effort, moving up the GC in Qinghai Lake when Monsalve got disqualified.

From those paltry points, only Ludwigzgz moved up a place, so the End or Year 2 Standings are:

1   Squire   11565
2   Fauniera   10985
3   Comodoro   10857

Rider Scores
Year 2 of the game was dominated by the rise of Tadej Pogacar, with two unselected riders who dominate the 2019-21 edition providing his best competition: there is no shame that Evenepoel was not thought of in early 2018, but maybe we should have expected someone to have noticed Higuita's early results.
POGACAR Tadej      1519 pts   16 teams
EVENEPOEL Remco      952   0
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres      914   0

JAKOBSEN Fabio      781   27
ASGREEN Kasper      757   2
PHILIPSEN Jasper      755   21
VLASOV Aleksandr      645   0

SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      578   12
BOL Cees      565   1
MADOUAS Valentin      540   10
HIRSCHI Marc      540   7

Across the two years, the best riders we could have had (but other than some sprinters, we did a poor job of picking them in any numbers)
POGACAR Tadej      1880 points   16 teams
JAKOBSEN Fabio      1558   27
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      1225   12
PHILIPSEN Jasper      1112   21
MADOUAS Valentin      1101   10
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      1046   22
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres      1033   0
ASGREEN Kasper      986   2
EVENEPOEL Remco      952   0
VLASOV Aleksandr      825   0

HIRSCHI Marc      806   7
BOL Cees      805   1
BALLERINI Davide      760   1
DE GENDT Aimé      701   1
VELASCO Simone      671   1
ARANBURU DEBA Alexander      638   0
GANNA Filippo      626   23
HARPER Chris      624   0
With perfect foresight, a manager could have scored 17349 so far: Squire has 66.7% of that

If we follow the pattern of the game in previous years, Year Three will comprise about 40% of the final totals: will that leave anyone with enough points to catch up a 580 point deficit?

Year Three of the game that is drawing to a conclusion saw the winners of two Grand Tours: I'm not sure that this cohort have it in them to match that, but there could be some big results appearing in the scores.

And while you are waiting to see the results of the 2017-19 edition (I don't think I'll have much time to do the analysis on Sunday or Monday), you can make a start on your 2020-22 selection.  There are 43 riders that we chose for this game who are still eligible for that one, if you really want to persevere with them.

Year 3, Month 1 to 2nd February

Now is the time for riders to start to show what their standing will be in the sport.  We have seen some super results, but will we see superstars?

Top January (and early Feb) scorers:
GANNA Filippo      125pts (2nd in San Juan ITT and GC)   23 teams
PHILIPSEN Jasper      111 (stage points, and point classification win, in TDU)   21
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      95 (stage win and 5th on GC in San Juan) for Kazistuta
MCNULTY Brandon      91 (4th in San Juan and some stage points)   18
MADOUAS Valentin      48   10
ARMIRAIL Bruno      38   2
PLANCKAERT Edward      32   5
RIVERA SERRANO Kevin      24   20
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose      23   22
FABBRO Matteo      22   1

The scores in the game that is just starting its second year are more impressive for this month, mainly because Evenepoel and Moschetti were not on people's radar when this one started.  But Kazistuta getting the top 5 scorers of the month into his team is not to be sniffed at.

1   Kazistuta   504 (Ganna, Philipsen, Florez, McNulty, Madouas and Rivera)
2   Fauniera   432  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Madouas, Rivera and Hodeg)
3   Skidmark   428  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Plankaert and Rivera)
4   Squire   414  (Ganna, Philipsen, McNulty, Madouas and Rivera)
5   Cordi333   403
5   Kryvo   403

34   Leadbelly   18
   CollectiveWisdom   419
   CollectiveIgnorance   558

Standings

Nathanptz and HugoKoblet, despite being modestly placed in the monthly ratings, each move up 2 places, to 3rd and 4th respectively.  Armchair Cyclist matches that jump, but in a less significant part of the table.

1   Squire   11979

Does this cohort have any big results in the Spring Classics among them (arguably, Asgren already has acheived one)?  And will there actually be much racing in Europe before the next update is due?

Year 3, month 3 and 4, and 5, at least    2nd March to 5th April (officially: effectively, 14 March or 31 May, depending on your perspective)

JAKOBSEN Fabio      80 (GP Jean-Pierre Monseré win)   27 teams
DE GENDT Aimé      48 (2nd in Le Samyn)   for NorhAmericanScum
ASGREEN Kasper      24 (3rd in Paris-Nice time trial and some GC points)   for Leadbelly and LukasCPH
BOL Cees      20 (minor stage points and finishing points in Paris-Nice) for Squire

Standings
Our leader was the top scorer, even in this long period of few points.  Fauniera lacks Jakobsen, and so drops from 2nd to 4th, and the podium battle is very close.  Hugo and Skidmark are joined by Karaev in the "managed to climb a place" group.

Year 3 typically has about 40% of the game points: maybe not this year, but at least it didn't finish in March.

Year 3 Months 4 to 7 15 March to 2 August

A large chunk of time, but this is really more restating that the races are on than major contributions to scores

POGACAR Tadej      134 pts (TT national win, RR National 2nd, 13th in Strade Bianche)   16 teams
BROZYNA Piotr      52 (5th on GC in Sibiu) for NAS
NOVAK Domen      49 (5th and 6th in national RR and TT)   for Jon Ezeitza
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      31 pts   12 teams
BALLESTEROS CANOVAS Miguel Angel      31   1
RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian      25   9
FOSS Tobias Svendsen      18   2
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      12   1
SERRANO RODRIGUEZ Gonzalo      5   1
CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime      5   6
FABBRO Matteo      5   1
and that is all the scoring riders selected in our teams over nearly 5 months.

1=   Fauniera, Karaev   190 (Pogacar, Sosa and Rodriguez)
3=   AlyKaptan, Comodoro, Laarsland, Nathanptz   165 (Pogacar and Sosa)
7=   Cordi333, HugoKoblet, RoteLaterne   159

32   Armchair_Cyclist, Joelsim, Shalgo   0
   CollectiveWisdom   165
   CollectiveIgnorance   316

Standings

Fauniera is the only manager to move up more than one spot, rising from 4th to 2nd, but Squire still has a considerable lead.  Comodoro also moves up a place among the top ten.

Year 3, Month 8 3rd August to 6th September

The calendar is all over the place, but riders are very much back in the pattern of racing, and some doing so very impressively.

POGACAR Tadej      369 pts (12th in Milan-San Remo, 4th in Dauphine, and 2nd in Pts classification, stage win and 2nd in Tour)   16 teams
BALLERINI Davide      284 (Pologne stage win, 2nd in Nats, 6th in Euros, 2nd in Brussels Classic)   for Madrazo
EEKHOFF Nils      233 (2nd in Hageland, 2nd in Nats, 7th in Bretagne Classic)   for Monsieur Hulot
NARVAEZ PRADO Jhonatan Manuel      221 (top tens in Trittico Lombardia and Wallonie, stage win and podiums and GC win in Settimana)   26
EENKHOORN Pascal      180   6
PHILIPSEN Jasper      168   21
DE GENDT Aimé      130   1
ASGREEN Kasper      110   2
CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime      103   6
HIRSCHI Marc      100    7
BOL Cees      95   1
CONCI Nicola      87   8
PETERS Nans      85   1
GANNA Filippo      80   23

As a change from Evenepoel outscoring those who were actually chosen, Vlasov would have been eligible for this edition and outscored anyone who was picked.

1   Squire   1345 (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Hirschi, Bol, Ganna)
2   Laarsland   1268  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Conci, Ganna)
3   Fauniera   1265  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Hirschi, Ganna)
4   HugoKoblet    1260  (Pogacar, Narvaez, Philipsen, Ganna)
5   Kazistuta   1196

   CollectiveWisdom   1103
   CollectiveIgnorance   1765

Standings
The top three at the beginning of the month were first, third and fourth this time, and the one who interrupted them is now fourth.  That 2 place rise for Laarsland is beaten only by Cordi's 3 spot move to 6th, and Kazistuta appears in the top ten.

We've already had two stage wins and a moral stage victory at the Tour de France from this cohort: what else will they manage before the end of this edition and this strangest of years?

Year 3, month 9    7th September to 4th October

"What else will they manage before the end of this edition?" I wondered at the end of the last post here: only perhaps the most remarkable TdF time trial and a GC win; two podium positions in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and a World Championships win (time trial) and podium (road race), and Giro stage and Pink jersey.  Not bad for youngsters...

POGACAR Tadej      1120 (2 more stage wins, KoM win and GC in the Tour de France, 3rd in L-B-Liege, 9th in Fleche)   16 teams
HIRSCHI Marc      726 (Stage win in Tour, Fleche win, LBL 2nd, World Champs bronze)    7
GANNA Filippo      406   (World TT gold, stages in Giro and Tirreno-Adriatico) 23
PHILIPSEN Jasper      157   (win and a 2nd in BinckBank stages) 21
ASGREEN Kasper      152 (National ITT win, World ITT 6th)   2
MADOUAS Valentin      144   10
DE GENDT Aimé      112   1
KNOX James      103   14
STANNARD Robert      93   6
GODON Dorian      90   1
DEWULF Stan      83   3
RIABUSHENKO Aliaksandr      76   28

This month

Huge scores for those with the foresight.  Squire was the top scorer in two editions of this game in this period, a disappointing 2nd here.

1   Fauniera   2837 (Pogacar, Hirschi, Ganna, Philipsen, Madouas, Stannard, Riabushenko)
2   Squire   2809 (Pogacar, Hirschi, Ganna, Philipsen, Madouas, Riabushenko)
3   Cordi333   2620 (Pogacar, Hirschi, Ganna, Philipsen, Knox)

33   DJW   394

The highest placed non-Pogacar manager is The Asian in 13th.

Squire has been top of the table since May last year, and it seems like there is only one real challenger at this stage.  Fauniera shares 11 of the Squire squad, and unless Ineos prioritise Sosa over Bernal, Carapaz, Froome and Thomas in La Vuelta, it's hard to see those 800 points being made up.

Check what has happened, and what still might, here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1axKJP4hHSG2lc80GZRgzTI4g03xzL5bC/view?usp=sharing).
