Title: 2018 Spring Classics CQ game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on February 04, 2018, 18:27
So there are warm up races, but soon the focus moves further north, and that is when we really get started

Team
12 men Fewer riders than most games, so more reason to make every pick count.

Budget
3000 pts  These are (by tradition for this game, dating from the first edition set up by CQ Manager) from the end of year lists, so 2017 points.

Scoring
CQ points from the Springtime one day races classified 1.HC or higher from Omloop Het Nieuwsblad to Liège-Bastogne-Liège.  Unless disqualifications are announced by time of the release of results from LBL, I will ignore them for the purposes of this game.

We have previously had some 1.1 races, but they have usually contributed little to the game, have had few WT teams in them, and none of them last year met the threshhold that I have held in terms of at least 6 WT teams competing.  So unless I am very strongly petitioned over the next week, the points are to be gained in these races:
1      24/02/2018      Omloop Het Nieuwsblad      1.WT3
2      25/02/2018      Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne      1.HC
3      03/03/2018      Strade Bianche      1.WT3
4      04/03/2018      GP Industria & Artigianato - Larciano      1.HC
5      11/03/2018      Ronde van Drenthe      1.HC
6      14/03/2018      Nokere Koerse      1.HC
7      16/03/2018      Handzame Classic      1.HC
8      17/03/2018      Milano - Sanremo      1.WT1
9      18/03/2018      GP de Denain - Porte du Hainaut      1.HC
10      21/03/2018      Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde      1.HC
11      23/03/2018      E3 Harelbeke      1.WT2
12      25/03/2018      Gent - Wevelgem      1.WT2
13      28/03/2018      Dwars door Vlaanderen      1.WT3
14      01/04/2018      Ronde van Vlaanderen      1.WT1
15      04/04/2018      Scheldeprijs      1.HC
16      08/04/2018      Paris - Roubaix      1.WT1
17      11/04/2018      Brabantse Pijl      1.HC
18      15/04/2018      Amstel Gold Race      1.WT2
19      18/04/2018      Flèche Wallonne      1.WT2
20      22/04/2018      Liège - Bastogne - Liège      1.WT1

Submitting your team
As ever, in CQ format (eg QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander) to my PM box at Velorooms or Cycling News before the red flag is dropped in the Omloop (24th Feb, time will depend on your location).  My bunch of underachievers has been sent to Joelsim, because he was the first to send his to me.

A dropbox spreadsheet here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ugnu05abophmbub/2018%20classics%20cq%20game%20selector.xls?dl=0) might help you to budget the team and to check the name formats.

Entries 10 1/2 hours to go, I'm going to bed.

You can of course have a mention, as can other top ranked teams in the duration of the game.
You can also have a little trophy to sit alongside your medals below your avatar, with apologies for it being late.

Whereas last year, Sagan needed help from no-one else to put a team over budget (and, for the sake of my team in the main game, I hope the same is true next  year).

Nah, I'm not good at Classics.

Nine entries so far, with about 8 1/2 days to go.

There are 52 riders selected so far, of whom 28 are unique picks (every team has at least one).
There are 2 riders on six of the 9 teams, 3 on five of them, and 5 on four teams.

The closer we get to the Omloop, the closer we are to the deadline: don't forget.

Nice to see I got a top 5 in this game.

Team submitted, let the classics begin.

About 3 days left to get your team in.

17 teams are in so far, with 71 riders selected, 29 of them just the once.  There are 6 riders on more than half the teams.

At 3000 points for 12 riders, the average spend is 250/rider.  One rider has been selected (only once) who takes up four times that average budget; two men costing more than thrice that have been picked, both multiple times; while of the four riders costing between 500 and 750 that have been chosen, two are on more than half the teams, and one is a unique pick.
Four teams so far have managed to fit in three of these budget-busters, and eight have two of them. Only one team at the moment that is egalitarian enough to have no-one above 500 points.
To make up for these riders, cheaper picks are necessary: 21 riders costing less than 100 points have been nominated, and three of them are on more than half the teams.

Applying last year's results in these races to this year's teams, the scores range from 1585 to 537; popularity ranking scores vary from 35% to 86% of the current Collective Wisdom team's score.

38 teams in (there is a 39th, which I'll explain below), which is a bit of a drop from previous years, with some regulars missing, but great to have some new entrants.

You'll notice that Froschi's team only has 8 men; the team only came in during the small hours of this morning, and although I pointed it out to him when I eventually got up, he hasn't got back to me.  His remaining budget is 66 points, so whoever he might have filled those spaces with probably won't make the difference between being a contender and an also-ran.

Rider Popularity

126 riders chosen, and exactly half of them are unique picks

24: VANMARCKE Sep (out of 39 teams, a fairly low take up for a most popular pick)
20: CAPIOT Amaury, DE BIE Sean, ROELANDTS Jürgen, STYBAR Zdenek, TERPSTRA Niki
19: NIZZOLO Giacomo
17: MOSER Moreno, VAN BAARLE Dylan
13: COQUARD Bryan, VANDENBERGH Stijn
12: ENGER Sondre Holst, STANNARD Ian
The eleven most popular picks, plus Stannard but not Enger, make up the Collective Wisdom team.  Even with choosing the more expensive of those two joint 12th in the popularity charts, there is still a spare 328 points in that budget.

9: MOSCON Gianni
8: GASPAROTTO Enrico
7: OSS Daniel
6: HALVORSEN Kristoffer, HAUSSLER Heinrich, LANGEVELD Sebastian, VAN AERT Wout, VAN HOOYDONCK Nathan
5: ALAPHILIPPE Julian, BRESCHEL Matti, CORT NIELSEN Magnus, DEVENYNS Dries, FELLINE Fabio
4: BIERMANS Jenthe, EDMONDSON Alexander, THWAITES Scott, VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume

Big spends

The defining choices for each team.  3000 points for 12 riders averages out at 250 points, so these are the riders costing more than twice that.

Gilbert: So 2017

Colbrelli and Stybar: Laarsland

Naesen and Vanmarcke: SemirS

Alaphilippe, Felline and Vanmarcke: Kazistuta
Alaphilippe, Vanmarcke and Stybar: Mellow Velo
Alaphilippe and Lutsenko: B'bass
Alaphilippe and Stybar: The Asian
Alaphilippe alone: Del1962

Degenkolb and Vanmarcke: Shalgo

Moscon and Benoot: The Art
Moscon, Felline and Stybar:   Search
Moscon, Vanmarcke and Stybar:   Los Brolin, Rote Laterne
Moscon and Vanmarcke: GPBlanco, Leadbelly
Moscon and Stybar: DJW, Squire, Zaka fan

Benoot and Stybar: Armchair Cyclist
Benoot alone: Scrool07

Felline, Theuns and Vanmarcke: Joelsim
Felline, Vanmarcke and Stybar: Vladimir
Felline and Vanmarcke: Comodoro

De Buyst and Vanmarcke: DJSprtsch

Theuns, Vanmarcke and Stybar: NairoQ

Vanmarcke and Stybar: Amis Velo, Blues_in_the_Bottle, Hakkie, Madrazo, Russell23, ThePirate81
Vanmarcke alone: Chiron, DFA123, Fauniera, Froschi, NorthAmericanScum

Barbier: Josedin

Stybar: Nathanptz

Salvarani is the only manager not to have broken the 500 point barrier, but his most expensive pick, Cort Nielsen, comes close at 480pts.

In last year's races

If we post last year's results for the 20 races that will make up this game, the results will be:

1   So2017   2057
2   AmisVelo   1575
3   Madrazo   1559
4   Zaka_fan   1445
5   Hakkie   1404
6   DJW   1361
7   Russell23   1346
8   Laarsland   1327
9   Scrool07   1305
10   Armchair   1267
11   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1250
12   Nathanptz   1219
13   SemirS   1139
14   Froschi   1092
15   LosBrolin   1075
16   Leadbelly   1051
17   ThePirate81   1024
18   DFA123   1020
19   RoteLaterne   1001
20   Shalgo   989
21   NairoQ   983
22   MellowVelo   974
23   GPBlanco   968
24   Comodoro   939
25   Search   897
25   The_Asian   897
27   Salvarani   896
28   Vladimir   849
29   Squire   841
30   Bbass   791
31   TheArt   757
32   Chiron   642
33   NorthAmericanScum   641
34   Del1962   639
35   Joelsim   594
36   Fauniera   586
37   DJSprtsch   567
38   Kazistuta   542
39   Josedin   417
   CollectiveWisdom   1180

And that table is why the So 2017 team needs explaining.
It came into existence partly because I soon became dis-enamoured of my team (very rapidly collated because Joelsim sent in his squad very early, and largely made by looking at popular picks in the season game and trying to identify those who perform in the classics); partly because I was a bit disappointed that unlike last year no-one had built a team around one of the big names of these events, and such teams are always interesting to track; partly because I had some cancelled work yesterday so I had time to do it; partly because having started compiling the "In last year's races" data, I was intrigued to see how far I could take that; and partly because as game compiler I had the opportunity to cheat and put in a second selection.

So the intention was to calculate the team with the highest possible total score from these races last year.  I suspect that there might be a way of getting Excel to work that out for me (PM me if you could explain), but I only looked at those who generated at least 60% of their 2017 points in these 20 races (having checked that it was not possible to make an improvement by including Kwiatkowski or Van Avermaet) omitting those who had retired, joined teams that will give them few of these rides, or are carrying injuries.  Within those stipulations, I think this is the highest 2017 score team possible (Hakkie: you are usually good at working out best poss permutations), so I submit it as a mathematical selection rather than my second bite at the cherry.

Race 1: Omloop

Maybe not the start to the Classics season that many hoped for, and not a result that many in our game hoped for or expected, but two teams have reason to be very happy with their pick.  Popular cheap pick Capiot has already paid back half his cost, and had anyone gone for Wisniowski they would have a rider in profit already, which is a valuable asset in this game.

VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael    1st, 180pts for   Blues_in_the_Bottle and Nathanptz
VANMARCKE Sep   3rd, 92pts for 24 teams
GILBERT Philippe    5th, 70pts for So2017
THEUNS Edward    6th, 62pts for   Joelsim and NairoQ
VAN LERBERGHE Bert   7th, 54 for   Armchair Cyclist and Blues_in_the_Bottle
COLBRELLI Sonny   8th, 46 for Laarsland
THWAITES Scott    24pts for 4 teams
ROOSEN Timo   18 for 3
CAPIOT Amaury   16 for 20
STYBAR Zdenek   11 for 20
CORT NIELSEN Magnus   8 for 5
and 28 other finishers gaining 5 points each

1   Blues_in_the_Bottle   352 (Valgren, Vanmarcke, Van Lerberghe, Stybar and 3 fivers)
2   Nathanptz   274 (Valgren, Thwaites, Roosen, Capiot, Stybar and 5 fivers: 10 scorers in one race)
3   Joelsim   185 (Vanmarcke, Theuns, Capiot and 3 fivers)
4   NairoQ   177
5   Russell23   168
6   Hakkie   158
7   ThePirate81   142
8   MellowVelo   141
9   Comodoro   138
10   AmisVelo   135
11   GPBlanco   133
12   RoteLaterne   132
13   Madrazo   130
14   DFA123   125
15   Kazistuta   123
15   Shalgo   123
17   Fauniera   122

19   LosBrolin   120
20   Vladimir   118
21   Chiron   117
21   Leadbelly   117
21   NorthAmericanScum   117
24   DJSprtsch   112
25   Armchair   108
26   Laarsland   100
27   Froschi   97
28   So2017   87

38   Del1962   10
39   Josedin   5
   CollectiveWisdom   146
   Trudgin*   66

You'll notice Trudgin sneaking in with a late, asterisked entry, which has 5 unique picks, comes bottom of the popularity table, and can't be said to have sought unfair use of the Omloop result.

All the numbers (https://www.dropbox.com/s/wjso3rpoipt4y4w/classics%20game%202018.xls?dl=0), and even if I don't publish this link after each race, the spreadsheet file should remain here throughout.

I particularly like the teams of Amis Velo, Leadbelly and Russell23.
I'm interested to see if Benoot or Moscon is the better pick for this game. Benoot seems to be the safer pick as he always scores the same amout of points. Moscon's limit is the sky but it's also possible he can't get off the ground.

Race 2: Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

The best sprinters are usually too expensive for the number of options they get in these races, so there will usually be fewer points on a race that ends up as a large group gallop.  Some sprinters are thought durable or adaptable enough to be worth a big spend, so they will get in the frame from time to time.  Like an expensive unique pick in 3rd today, the highest placed selected rider.

Today's points
COLBRELLI Sonny   3rd, 72pts for Laarsland and Trudgin*
LIGTHART Pim   4th, 62pts for Salvarani
VERMOTE Julien   9th, 30pts for DFA123, NAS and Salvarani
NAESEN Oliver   22pts for   SemirS
DEBUSSCHERE Jens   11pts for 2 teams
KUZNETSOV Vyacheslav   9 for 2
VAN LERBERGHE Bert   8 for 2
BIERMANS Jenthe   5 for 4
DEHAES Kenny   5 for 1
KEISSE Iljo   5 for 1
NIZZOLO Giacomo   5 for 19

1   Salvarani   97 (Ligtard, Vermote and Vliegen)

I'm the one who decided that it's not included, and through my unique pick, Gaudin, paired with the popular Terpstra,  I'm the one who missed out most.

It would have given us:
1   Armchair   135
2   So2017   128
3   Laarsland   104
4   DJW   99
5   Nathanptz   95

34   Vladimir   0
34   Fauniera   0

And I would have been up to 5th.  But it doesn't count.

Having missed out on Le Samyn, I think my team is going to be top of the table for Strade Bianche.  I only have a top 11 confirmed, but of those only Benoot (3 teams), Van Aert (6 teams) and Stybar (20) are selected in the game, and I am the only one of the Bennot teams with a second high scorer (Stybar).  Scrool07 and The Art also have Benoot, Squire and DFA123 combine Van Aert and Stybar.

Race 3: Strade Bianche

There are races in this series, mainly when we get to the Ardennes, that suit riders who get a lot of CQ points in GTs and other stage races: that's at least part of the reason why only 3 of the top ten, and 7 of the first twenty finishers, were selected.  We might collectively need other reasons for no-one going for the likes of Power and Serry.

BENOOT Tiesj   1st, 180pts for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07 and The Art
VAN AERT Wout    3rd, 92pts for  6 teams
STYBAR Zdenek  7th,   54 pts for 20 teams
OSS Daniel    12th, 27 pts for 7 teams
DE TIER Floris   24pts for Chiron
MOSCON Gianni   22pts, 9 teams
AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey   14, 1
ANDERSEN Søren Kragh   8, 1
VERMOTE Julien   6, 3
And for five pointers, we have 3 unique picks (GILBERT Philippe, KEISSE Iljo, LUTSENKO Alexey) and our most popular pick, on 24 teams, VANMARCKE Sep.

1   Armchair   234 (Benoot and Stybar)
2   TheArt   202 (Benoot and Moscon)
3   Scrool07   180 (Benoot)
4   Squire   168 (Van Aert, Stybar, Moscon)
5   Chiron   162 (Van Aert, Oss, De Tier and Amador)
6   DFA123   157  (Van Aert, Stybar, Vermote and Vanmarcke)
7   NorthAmericanScum   130
8   Fauniera, Josedin   97
10   Russell23   86
11   Laarsland, LosBrolin, Nathanptz, RoteLaterne   81
15   DJW, Search, Zaka_fan   76
18   AmisVelo, Blues_in_the_Bottle, Hakkie, Madrazo, MellowVelo, NairoQ, ThePirate81, Vladimir   59
26   GPBlanco, The_Asian   54
28   Comodoro   32
29   Leadbelly, Trudgin*   27
30   DJSprtsch   13
31   Salvarani   6
32   Bbass, Froschi, Joelsim, Kazistuta, SemirS, Shalgo, So2017   5
39   Del1962   0
   CollectiveWisdom   59

Standings
At this early stage perhaps it is not large moves (the top 5 on the day all move by 19 or more places) that are surprising, but that the top two hold onto their places.

And now I rue even more the non-counting status of Le Samyn: I would have been top.  I'll stop going on about it now.

Tomorrow is the GP Industria & Artigianato, which could potentially giv a fair few points to a small number of teams, but which I am fairly sure will earn any popular picks nothing.

GP Industria & Artigianato  (GP Larciano if you prefer)

More of an impact on the game than I expected, in that the highest placed rider who was selected is one of the more popular picks.
Less of an impact than I expected in that only 2 of the top 30 (ie, only 2 riders who get CQ points) were selected.

DE BIE Sean 4th, 62pts for 20 teams
IMPEY Daryl 8th, 36pts for 2 teams

1   ThePirate81   98 (De Bie and Impey)
2=   Nineteen other teams with De Bie    62
21   Joelsim   36 (Impey)
22=   Nineteen teams with neither scorer   0
   CollectiveWisdom   62

Standings

Pretty straightforward: if you have De Bie or Impey, you moved up, if not, you move down.  Only Exceptions to this are the top 4, who all have De Bie, and the bottom team, who doesn't.  Pirate81's reward for having both selected riders is a nine place jump and a place in the top ten.

Race 5: Ronde van Drenthe

Most riders were busy in stage races this week, so it was only some of the fringe selections who took points today.

SISR Frantisek   1st, 140 points for So 2017
GERTS Floris   7th, 42pts for Comodoro, Madrazo and Nathanptz
VERMELTFOORT Coen   11th, 22pts for Josedin
LIGTHART Pim   12th, 18pts for Salvarani
CAPIOT Amaury   13th, 15pts for 20 teams
WARLOP Jordi   11pts, 3 teams
DE BACKER Bert   7   1
ALLEGAERT Piet   5   2
DEHAES Kenny   5   1

Today suggests that maybe there is something to be learned from who scored a large proportion of their points in these races last year:

1   So2017   145 (Sisr and Allegaert)
2=   Nathanptz, Comodoro   57 (Gerts and Capiot)
4   Madrazo   42 (Gerts)
5=   Squire, Joelsim   26
7=   Search, Josedin   22
9   The_Asian   20
10   Salvarani   18

25   Vladimir   11
26   AmisVelo   5
27   Fourteen other teams   0
   CollectiveWisdom   15

Standings

The top three hold their places, although the lead has been reduced from 69 points to just 12, but just behind them Laarsland, Russell23 and The Art each move up one at the expense of Capiot-less DFA123.  Comodoro manages a 7 place rise to appear in the top ten, and So 2017 overtakes half the field to sit mid-table.

I'll be sat in front of the spreadsheet quite a lot over the next week: Nokere Koerse on Wednesday, Handzame on Friday, then the first of the really big scoring races, Milan-San Remo on Saturday and back to minor points for GP de Denain on Sunday.

Race 6: Danilith Nokere Koerse

JAKOBSEN Fabio   1st, 140pts for Josedin
CAPIOT Amaury   2nd, 84pts for 20 teams
DE BIE Sean   8th, 36 for 20 teams
BASSO Leonardo   11th, 22 for DJW
VLIEGEN Loïc   18pts for Amis Velo and Salvarani

15 teams combine Capiot and De Bie for 120 pts, so not a great surprise that some of those overhaul Josedin's unique, but unsupported, pick of the winner.

1   Kazistuta   146 (Capiot, De Bie, Coquard and Naesen)

Standings
Previous leader, Blues in the Bottle, lacks Capiot, which has caused him to drop to 3rd, and Mellow Velo is the only new entrant to the top ten (and only just).  Farther down, the table is more volatile: Josedin gets a 10 place rise from his unique winning pick, but that is only the 5th best climb of the day, Kazistuta's 17 places being the best.

Race 7: Handzame Classic

The main action this weekend, including in this game, will be focussed on San Remo, but the second string of riders, largely those who have already been at Drenthe and Nokere, were at Handzame today and Denain on Sunday.

Not many scorers, but these points are just as good as those in a monument.

HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose   1st, 140pts for Josedin
HALVORSEN Kristoffer   2nd, 84 pts for 6 teams
BLYTHE Adam   5th, 54 for Madrazo and Salvarani
DEHAES Kenny   6th, 48 for    The Asian
JAKOBSEN Fabio   13th, 15   1
ALLEGAERT Piet     19th, 7   2

Second race in a row that Josedin has a unique pick as a winner.  What odds Iljo Keisse for Milan-San Remo?

1   Josedin   239 (Hodeg, Halvorsen, Jakobsen)
2   Madrazo   138 (Halvorsen, Blythe)
3=   Blues_in_the_Bottle, Squire, Hakkie, DJW   84
7   Salvarani   54
8   The_Asian   48
9=   AmisVelo, So2017   7
11   Everyone else   0

Standings

BitB is back on top, Halvorsen today providing the points that Capiot didn't on Wednesday.  Josedin has a 20 point jump (30 places since Wednesday morning) and well into the top 10.  Squire also has a rise (5 places) within the top ten.

Race 8: Milan San Remo

Well, no-one was going to spend 60% of their game budget on Nibali, who only got 10 points in this set of races last year.  And the same budget considerations, perhaps slightly less exaggeratedly, put most of the high scoring riders today outside of the game.  But not all of them:

ROELANDTS Jürgen   5th. 112 pts for 20 teams
CORT NIELSEN Magnus   8th, 80pts for Fauniera, Rote Laterne, Salvarani, Squire and ThePirate81
COLBRELLI Sonny   9th, 70 for Laarsland
BRESCHEL Matti   12th, 46 for Armchair Cyclist, DJW, Madrazo, Scrool07 and SemirS
LAPORTE Christophe   13th, 42 for The Art and Vladimir
HAAS Nathan   18th, 28 for Froschi
IMPEY Daryl   22   for Joelsim and Pirate81
DEBUSSCHERE Jens   20   2
MOSCON Gianni   7 for 9 teams
and 28 finishers for 5 points, including popular picks Stannard, Van Baarle and Vandenbergh.

1   ThePirate81   219 (Roelandts, Cort, Impey and 1 5 pointer)
2   Fauniera   212  (Roelandts, Cort and 4 fivers)
3   Salvarani   207 (Roelandts, Cort and 3 fivers)
4   Squire   199  (Roelandts, Cort and Moscon)

Standings
As predicted, considerable shake-up today.  This mornig's top three are now 4th, 5th and 7th respectively.  Squire was already 4th, and 4th on the day moves him to the pinnacle, while today's top scorer, The Pirate81, moves up from 9th to second, and Laarsland was 7th as the riders left Milan, but now on the podium.  Although 38 of the 39 teams changed position (Sorry Del1962, no change from last but you have improved your score 5-fold), and Fauniera managed a 16 place jump, the top ten only gets one new entry, Salvarani is the only new entrant to the top ten.

Race 9: GP de Denain

Fewer cobbles than expected, and possibly fewer points than would have been hoped for.  The Asian does a Josedin, by having a unique pick winner, preventing Josedin from doing a Josedin by having the day's highest selected finisher as a UP.

DEHAES Kenny   1st, 140pts for The Asian
VERMELTFOORT Coen   6th, 48 for Josedin
VAN AERT Wout   12th, 18pts for Chiron, DFA123, Fauniera, Josedin, NorthAmericanScum, Squire
MORICE Julien   13th, 15 for So 2017
OFFREDO Yoann    15th, 11 for Amis Velo, Scrool07, Zaka_fan
GAUDIN Damien   27th, 5 for Armchair Cyclist

Standings

The Squire slightly increases his lead, and Armchair Cyclist is the only other team in the morning's top ten to score, although Josedin re-enters that group.  A 14 point rise is The Asian's reward for picking the winner.

Standings
Not for the first time, Blues in the Bottle suffers a drop through having not taken Capiot.  With the rest of the top ten having all scored in the rather norrow 48-58 range, his is the main change in the upper reaches, although Comodoro and Hakkie have nudged their way into the top 10.  Mellow Velo and Joelsim share the jump of the day honours, but of only 4 places, so not changing the game much.

With 10 of 20 races completed, it is the halfway stage of the game.  But most races still to come are bigger than most of these have been, although the last few events of the series tend to feature a category of rider under-represented in our teams.

The combination of main riders, WT-scale points and cobbles should increase the rate of point scoring from Friday's E3 Harelbeke: see you then.

Race 11: E3 Harelbeke
A fruitless chase on the road, but the pursuit of our gameleaders has been merciless.  Some consolation for those who felt robbed of points in Le Samyn.

TERPSTRA Niki   1st, 220pts for 20 teams
GILBERT Philippe    2nd, 132pts for So 2017
NAESEN Oliver   4th, 96 pts for Semir S
BENOOT Tiesj   5th, 86 for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07, The Art
VANMARCKE Sep   7th, 66 for 24 teams
MOSCON Gianni   8th, 58 for 9
STYBAR Zdenek   9th, 52 for 20
ROELANDTS Jürgen   35pts for 20
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael   27pts for 2
HAUSSLER Heinrich   17 for 6
DEGENKOLB John   15 for 1
KUZNETSOV Vyacheslav   14 for 2
ANDERSEN Søren Kragh   11 for 1
VANDENBERGH Stijn   6 for 13
and 14 riders getting 5 points for finishing, of whom only Van Baarle is on more than 6 teams.

Although there were more points available in Milan-San Remo last weekend, this was far more productive in terms of points, because these were the riders we were focussed on.  6 teams took more points today than in the previous 10 races combined.

1   LosBrolin   454 (Terpstra, Vanmarcke, Moscon, Stybar, Roelandts, Haussler and Vandenburgh)
2   So2017   408  (Terpstra, Gilbert, Roelandts, Vandenburgh and 3 fivers)

Standings

Big shake up. Neither of the top two this morning had Terpstra, or any of the top 5, so it is left to Laarsland to ascend to the top, although Russell23 (previously 7th) and Armchair Cyclist (previously 6th) join him on a closely packed podium.  Picking 5 of the top 12 today gets Los Brolin the highest score of the day, the biggest jump (16 places), and a place in the top ten, which also has Madrazo and Amis Velo as new entries.

Race 12: Gent-Wevelgem

The top three would have been very expensive picks, but those close behind them fitted into many of our team budgets:
LAPORTE Christophe   4th. 96 pts for The Art and Vladimir
DEBUSSCHERE Jens   5th, 86 pts for DFA123 and Vladimir
NAESEN Oliver   6th, 76 pts for SemirS
STYBAR Zdenek   8th, 58 pts for 20 teams

CORT NIELSEN Magnus   12   5
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael   10   2
and no less than 46 more selected five pointers, including 6 of the Collective Wisdom team

Standings
The points were much lower than the E3 (only about 40% of the yield from that race) and apart from the top two, the range of scores was fairly narrow, so moves were mainly undramatic.  The only movements in the top ten were one place movements for Hakkie and Madrazo, with Nathanptz sliding down to accommodate that.  Good days for Vladimir and DFA123 earn jumps of 11 and 9 places respectively.

Race 13: Dwars door Vlaanderen

The winning break included the most popular pick in the game, one unique pick, and three who were unchosen: the final podium was Unpicked-Unique pick-Popular

TEUNISSEN Mike   2nd, 108pts for Salvarani
VANMARCKE Sep   3rd, 92 for 24 teams
STYBAR Zdenek    6th, 62 for 20 teams
BENOOT Tiesj   7th, 54 for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07, The Art
TERPSTRA Niki   9th, 40 for 20 teams
MOSCON Gianni   12th, 27 for 9
ROOSEN Timo   13th, 24 for Nathanptz, Salvarani, The Art
CORT NIELSEN Magnus   14th, 22 for Fauniera, Rote Laterne, Salvarani, Squire, ThePirate81
DEGENKOLB John   15th, 20 for Shalgo
LAPORTE Christophe   18 for 2

DE BUYST Jasper   14 for 1
ROWE Luke   9 for 2
HAUSSLER Heinrich   8 for 6
THEUNS Edward   7 for 2
 and 21 five pointers

Looking at the above, you might expect Salvarani to be the big scorer of the day, but his team popularity ranking was 3rd lowest, as he had eschewed all those high scoring popular riders, and there he is mid-table.

1   RoteLaterne   243 (Vanmarcke, Stybar, Terpstra, Moscon, Cort)

Standings

This was the second highest scoring race so far in the game, after E3 Harelbeke, and although it didn't shake things up quite as much as that race did, it has had an impact.
Most notably, it had an impact at the top.  Russell jumps from 3rd to take the lead, with more of a margin than we have seen before.  The Collective Wisdom team has done very well since action has returned to Belgium, and would be in second place if it were ranked (Russell is top of the popularity rankings, so the CW team is closest to his in composition as well as in competition). Hakkie and Madrazo both jump onto the podium, Rote Laterne is jumper of the day and into the top ten, and Amis Velo sneaks back into that group too.

Standings
Very high points, but of today's top ten, eight were already in the top ten overall, so this was more a case of re-enforcing the advantages that had already accrued.  But that is not to say that the 23% of total scores to date that were won today did nothing.  Russell hangs on to the lead, but the lead is considerably cut back, not by those on this morning's podium, but by Nathanptz' rise from 8th to 2nd as the day's top scorer.  Madrazo hangs on to his 3rd place, and Amis Velo moves up a couple of spots.  New in the top ten is GPBlanco, on the back of a 10 place rise, but the biggest riser of the day is the S0 2017 team, with a 10 place jump courtesy of the unique pick of Gilbert.

And the absolute need to have picked Terpstra is shown in the highest team without him being in 17th place.

I'm not expecting a big points haul on Wednesday in the Scheldeprijs, as the type of sprinter who is likely to be among the big points will have had a big price, and not specialise greatly in the rest of this series.

Race 15: Scheldeprijs

Few point scorers, as predicted, but they got more points than might otherwise have been expected, due to a combination of gates and punctures.
Yet another unique pick victory for Josedin, and he had the 3rd best picked rider as well.

JAKOBSEN Fabio   1st, 140pts for Josedin
DEBUSSCHERE Jens   4th, 62pts for DFA123 and Vladimir
VERMELTFOORT Coen   11th, 22pts for Josedin
VAN SCHIP Jan-Willem    17th, 9pts for Comodoro
PHINNEY Taylor   19th, 7 for Blues in the Bottle, Chiron and Zaka Fan
BASSO Leonardo   20th, 6 for DJW
SINKELDAM Ramon   22nd, 5 for Salvarani
TEUNISSEN Mike   23rd, 5 for Salvarani (again)
DE BIE Sean   26th, 5 for 20 teams

1   Josedin   162
2=   DFA123, Vladimir   62
4   Salvarani   15
5   Comodoro   14
6   Blues_in_the_Bottle   12
7=   Chiron, Zaka_fan   7
9   DJW   6
10=   17 other teams with De Bie   5

Standings

No positional change at all in the top ten, just the odd 5 point relative loss or gain here and there.  Just failing to get into the ten is DFA123, with a 7 point leap, just outdoing Josedin's 6 position rise. Only one other team (Vladimir) moved up at all, and that only by one place.

Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, probably the last race that many of our selected riders have any interest in.

Race 16:Paris Roubaix

Riders go unpicked if they either are too expensive, or if they were not expected to do well.  That accounts for the first two finishers today, but the game kicked in after they had finished, with 3 of the most popular picks featuring strongly.  This was the third biggest contributing event in terms of points, after the Ronde and E3.

TERPSTRA Niki   3rd, 145pts for 20 teams
VANMARCKE Sep   6th, 100pts for 24
PHINNEY Taylor   8th, 80pts for Blues in the Bottle, Chiron and Zaka Fan
STYBAR Zdenek   9th, 70pts for 20
DEBUSSCHERE Jens   10th, 62pts for DFA123 and Vladimir
TEUNISSEN Mike   11th, 54pts   1 team
NAESEN Oliver   12th, 46pts   1 team
VAN AERT Wout   13th, 42   6

2   LosBrolin   349 (Terpstra, Stybar, Vanmarcke, Haussler, 2 fivers)
3   AmisVelo, Russell23   346 (Terpstra, Stybar, Vanmarcke, Van Baarle, 1 fiver)
5   Hakkie   341 (Terpstra, Stybar, Vanmarcke, Van Baarle, no fivers)

Standings

Combining Terpstra and Stybar pretty much defined the high scorers even before this event, so not a huge difference around the top, except that those lacking Vanmarcke slide a bit. So Madrazo and Hakkie overtake Nathanptz to take the lower places on the podium, and Los Brolin, Amis Velo and Rote Laterne overtake (or at least draw level with) Armchair Cyclist and Laarsland.  Although he didn't even make the top ten scorers of the day, Leadbelly is the climber of the day (4 places).

So now the key question becomes "who held back places in their team for hilly classics riders?"

We'll begin to find out in the Brabant on Wednesday.

Race 17: Brabantse Pijl

A partial answer to the game's big tactical question: who do you find a place for who will have a chance of competing with the expensive non-Spring specialists who tend to take most points in these last 4 races?  Some teams were not totally cobble-focussed.

COLBRELLI Sonny   2nd, 84 pts for Laarsland and Trudgin*
BENOOT Tiesj   3rd, 72 for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07, The Art
IMPEY Daryl   10th, 26 for Joelsim and Pirate81
MARTENS Paul     11th, 22 for Trudgin*
COQUARD Bryan    19th, 7 for 13 teams

   Trudgin*   106
1   Laarsland   84
2   Scrool07   79
3=   Armchair, TheArt    72
5   ThePirate81, Joelsim   33
7   Ten teams with Coquard only   7

Standings

No change on the podium ( 7 point relative loss to the other two for Madrazo), but immediately behind that Armchair Cyclist has a 3 place rise.  2 place jumps each for Scrool07 and The Art, and (back in the top ten) a one place improvement for Laarsland.

Good chance that Benoot could be the winning pick in the end Armchair!

At the very least, he will have done enough to make me feel hard done by about Devenyns' injury and Gaudin's non-counting performance in Le Samyn.

This morning's top 5:
Russell23    none of the top ten
Madrazo    Gasparotto
Hakkie      Gasparotto
Armchair    Gasparotto
Nathanptz     Valgren

With only the top ten riders on the spreadsheet so far, less than 100 points from virtual yellow jersey Nathanptz to currently 5th, Armchair Cyclist.

Race 18 Amstel Gold

There were suggestions of what riders had been selected who  could still make a difference, and no-one suspected that the winner of the first race in our game still had this up his sleeve.

VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael   1st, 220 pts for Blues in the Bottle and Nathanptz
GASPAROTTO Enrico   3rd, 112pts for Armchair Cyclist, B'bass, DFA123, Hakkie, Madrazo, Search, The Art, The Asian and Trudgin*
ALAPHILIPPE Julian   7th, 66pts for B'bass, Del1962, Kazistuta, Mellow Velo, The Asian
VANENDERT Jelle   10th, 46pts for Scrool07
IMPEY Daryl   11th, 40 for Joelsim and Pirate81
GILBERT Philippe    13th, 30 for So 2017
MOLARD Rudy   15th, 24 for DJW and Scrool07
DE TIER Floris   16th, 21 for Chiron
GESINK Robert   28th, 8 for GPBlanco
and 7 five-pointers, 6 of whom are only on one or two teams each, and the other is the most popular pick, Vanmarcke

Standings
The eight teams with Gasparotto include those who were 2nd, 3rd and 4th this morning, While Nathanptz, who was 5th, was one of the two who has Valgren. Nathanptz rises to the top, while Madrazo and Hakkie maintain their podium places.  Russell, who has only Vanmarcke among today's finishers, slips to 4th.  Blues in the Bottle is the (7 place) riser of the day, and is into the top ten.

I suspect that 4 teams are still in with a decent shout, and 2 others will at least be close to the podium.

The Asian, with both Alaphilippe (a unique pick) and Gasparotto, could yet make a late surge, but I reckon he would need him to win one of the two remaining races, and be top 5 in the other, to have a real chance.  Nathanptz will be pleased that Valgren is down to ride in both Ardennes races, but hasn't got great history in either (although 14th in L-B-L 2 years ago will give him some hope).  The 4 riders in Hakkie's team that he does not share with Madrazo will not give him much hope for catching him, but I doubt their opposite numbers will extend Madrazo's advantage either: the fate of these two teams lies in Gasparotto, and the dream of him repeating his 2016 campaign (although a much more modest set of results would suffice to catch Nathanptz: a top ten in either race could suffice if Valgren does not feature again.  Armchair Cyclist retains 2 irons in the fire, and if Benoot can achieve the aims I have described for Gasparotto, I will be in the same, Gasparotto dependent, boat as Madrazo and Hakkie, and if he gets top 10 in his debut in both races, I will be up with Nathan (if Valgren lets him down).

In short: Nathanptz will hope Valgren can consolidate his lead, a real star performance from Alaphilippe could win it for the Asian, and while Madrazo's hopes lie with Gasparotto,  Armchair Cyclist will look to him and also to Benoot.  Podium chances remain for Hakkie, who will want to see Madrazo do as well as possible, and Russell23, who will be cheering for any and all of the remaining 171 riders in each race.

And the final order could still be decided by those finishing much further down the field and how many five point finishers each team can muster.

We'll gather again on Wednesday to see how much mud has cleared after the Arrow has been fired.

Sorry it's quite late: I had to wait until well into the evening to watch it.

Race 19: Fleche Wallonne

Today was about two riders and one team as far as the upper reaches of the game is concerned, and very mediocre for everyone else.

ALAPHILIPPE Julian   1st, 220pts for B'bass, Del1962, Kazistuta, Mellow Velo, The Asian
VANENDERT Jelle   3rd, 112 for Scrool07
MOLARD Rudy   13th, 30 for Scrool07 (again) and DJW
GESINK Robert   20th, 16 for GPBlanco
MCCARTHY Jay   21st, 15 for Chiron
GILBERT Philippe    24th, 12 for So2017
GASPAROTTO Enrico   27th, 9 for 8 teams

and 7 selected 5 pointers, none of whom were on more than 3 teams.

1=   Bbass, The_Asian   229
3=   Del1962, Kazistuta, MellowVelo   220
6   Scrool07   147
7   DJW   30
8   Chiron   20
9   GPBlanco   16
10   Armchair, DFA123, TheArt   14
13   So2017   12
14   Fauniera   10
15   Hakkie, Madrazo, Search   9
18   Blues_in_the_Bottle, DJSprtsch, Froschi, Nathanptz, Salvarani   5
23   the rest   0
   CollectiveWisdom   0
   Trudgin*   14

Standings
No change, and very few points gained, among the top 5, but closing on them rapidly, and still with considerable for the last lap, is The Asian.  That is the only team in the top 15 this morning to have moved in the right direction, but further down the table, that 6 place rise was matched by Kazistuta and beaten (8 spots) by Del1962.

1   Nathanptz   2248
2   Madrazo   2214
3   Hakkie   2207
4   Russell23   2169
5   Armchair   2159
6   The_Asian   2083
7   LosBrolin   2023
8   AmisVelo   2017

10   RoteLaterne   1966
11   DFA123   1877
12   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1875
13   GPBlanco   1793
14   Zaka_fan   1750
15   DJW   1704
16   Leadbelly   1695
16   Shalgo   1695
18   So2017   1681
19   ThePirate81   1646
20   Scrool07   1614
21   MellowVelo   1548
22   Squire   1507
23   TheArt   1491
24   Bbass   1462
25   Froschi   1372
25   Vladimir   1372
27   Del1962   1224
28   NorthAmericanScum   1197
29   Comodoro   1176
30   Fauniera   1152
31   Kazistuta   1148
32   Search   1096
33   Salvarani   1087
34   Chiron   1077
35   NairoQ   1071
36   SemirS   1028
37   Josedin   978
38   Joelsim   875
39   DJSprtsch   722
   CollectiveWisdom   2119
   Trudgin*   705

So, the overall is still in the hands of the same 4 riders.
So let's imagine that, as today, Valgren merely finishes.  If Gasparotto comes 14th, Benoot 11th and Alaphilippe 3rd, then we will have 5 teams within about 10 points of each other at the top.

If Gasparotto were to be reduced to an also ran, then 7th for Benoot (to my advantage) or a second place for Alaphilippe (for The Asian) would still put Nathanptz' hold on the (non-existent) trophy in doubt.

Less than ten points between winner and third as the figures stand, but CQ are only showing 60 finishers so far, and PCS tells me there are another 72 5 pointers, who might hold the key.

EDIT: They made no substantial difference: give me a while and the results will be up.

Race 20, and the end of the game: Liege-Bastogne-Liege

Perhaps not surprisingly, it is largely the same riders who scored on Wednesday, but in a very different distribution of points.

ALAPHILIPPE Julian   4th, 125pts for B'bass, Del1962, Kazistuta, Mellow Velo, The Asian
GASPAROTTO Enrico   6th, 100 pts for 8 teams
FORMOLO Davide   7th, 90pts for Vladimir
VANENDERT Jelle   11th, 54 for Scrool07
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael   19th, 26 for Blues in the Bottle and Nathanptz
BENOOT Tiesj   18pts for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07, The Art
GESINK Robert   16 for GPBlanco
MOLARD Rudy   12 for Scrool07 and DJW

and 8 five pointers, 7 of whom are unique picks and one was on 2 teams.

1=   Bbass, The_Asian   225 (Alaphilippe and Gasparotto)
3=   Del1962, Kazistuta, MellowVelo   125 (Alaphilippe)
6=   Armchair, TheArt   118 (Gasparotto and Benoot)
8   DFA123   105 (Gasparotto and a fiver)
9=   Hakkie, Madrazo, Search   100 (Gasparotto)
12   Vladimir   90 (Formolo)
13   Scrool07   84 (Vanendert, Benoot, Molard)
14=   Blues_in_the_Bottle, Nathanptz   26 (Valgren)
16   GPBlanco   16
17   DJW   12
18=   Chiron, DJSprtsch   10
20=   Fauniera, Joelsim, So2017, ThePirate81   5
24=   Everyone else   0
   CollectiveWisdom   0
Trudgin*   105 (Gasparotto and a fiver)

Final Standings

Gasparotto did do well enough, though, for Valgren's position to be insufficient to save Nathanptz' lead.  Alaphilippe was gaining fast on Bardet and an extra 20 points that would have completed The Asian's late charge up the table, but but didn't make it, and Benoot's rather anonymous ride in the second group meant that Armchair couldn't disturb those who shared Gasparotto with him.  And so, in a very close finish, Madrazo moves up from second place to take the laurels, and that very small small gap between him and Hakkie is infiltrated by The Asian, and those three make up our podium.

1   Madrazo   2314
2   The_Asian   2308
3   Hakkie   2307
4   Armchair   2277
5   Nathanptz   2274
6   Russell23   2169
7   LosBrolin   2023
8   AmisVelo   2017
9   Laarsland   1993
10   DFA123   1982
11   RoteLaterne   1966
12   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1901
13   GPBlanco   1809
14   Zaka_fan   1750
15   DJW   1716
16   Scrool07   1698
17   Leadbelly   1695
17   Shalgo   1695
19   Bbass   1687
20   MellowVelo   1673
21   So2017   1671
22   ThePirate81   1651
23   TheArt   1609
24   Squire   1507
25   Vladimir   1462
26   Froschi   1372
27   Del1962   1349
28   Kazistuta   1273
29   Search   1211
30   NorthAmericanScum   1197
31   Comodoro   1176
32   Fauniera   1157
33   Chiron   1087
33   Salvarani   1087
35   NairoQ   1071
36   SemirS   1028
37   Josedin   978
38   Joelsim   880
39   DJSprtsch   732
   CollectiveWisdom   2119
   Trudgin*   810

So, 7 points from 1st to 3rd, 40 from 1st to 5th, and with 150m of the 20th race left, I didn't know who would win.

Congratulations to Madrazo and to his podium companions, and thanks to all for your entries.  See you again in about a week in the Giro game thread.

A bit of number crunching to follow, either this evening or tomorrow night.

Congratulations to Madrazo, what a tight competition. Gasparotto cost me a top ten result in the last race.
Thanks for the game Armchair_cyclist. See you all in Israel.

Madrazo's winning team:
Rider/Price/Points
TERPSTRA Niki   417   695
VANMARCKE Sep   602   417
STYBAR Zdenek   503   369
GASPAROTTO Enrico   93   221
ROELANDTS Jürgen   228   167
HALVORSEN Kristoffer   151   94
VAN BAARLE Dylan   347   92
BLYTHE Adam   267   84
GERTS Floris   115   61
BRESCHEL Matti   101   61
VANDENBERGH Stijn   40   38
STANNARD Ian   135   15

The Asian shared 4 of those, TERPSTRA, STYBAR, GASPAROTTO and STANNARD, and while ALAPHILIPPE, DEHAES, CAPIOT, DE BIE and HAUSSLER  did their bits to make it close, he will feel that EDMONDSON, VAN HOOYDONCK or ENGER could have done a little more, and it only needed a little more to win it.

Hakkie and Madrazo had very similar teams, but Hakkie's choice of CAPIOT, COQUARD, THWAITES and BASKA (rather than BLYTHE, GERTS Floris, BRESCHEL and VANDENBERGH) were what let him down (although Capiot is unlikely to get much of the blame).

Me: I'll rue the injury to Devenyns, and the 88 points that Gaudin got in the non-counting Samyn and Tro-Bro Leon races.

Best possible team
I post this with no great confidence (Hakkie usually manages to find a better permutation than I do), but the best I can find is:
TERPSTRA Niki
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael
STYBAR Zdenek
KREUZIGER Roman
DEBUSSCHERE Jens
JAKOBSEN Fabio
GASPAROTTO Enrico
Ackermann Pascal
VANENDERT Jelle
TEUNISSEN Mike
HOFSTETTER Hugo
CAPIOT Amaury
which would have scored 3823 from a spend of 2995.  Noteworthy that this selection is 25% Ardennes riders (not even counting the Amstel winner), while many teams in the game scored almost nothing after Roubaix.  Gasparotto's Ardennes campaign, as in 2016, was a key factor in the win.

Expensive flops
These riders cost more than the average 250 point/rider spend, but scored 1/6 of less of that cost.
