There's been a bit of a shake up in the parcours for 2018. The obvious one is that the uphill TT no longer starts off the race, but has been moved to the Saturday. The new stage 1 is completely different to the old stage 3 as well - finishing on a bit of a kicker up Mount Sequoyah.

There have been a couple of events going on the past week or two which might give us an idea of how Joe Martin could pan out.

This weekend just gone saw the double header of the Sunny King Criterium and the Piedmont Road Race. Against some pretty low level opposition, Holowesko dominated both races. They went 1-2-3 in the criterium (Gomez winning), but bettered that in the RR with in essence a 4 man TTT beating the rest of the field (Companioni the winner).

The San Dimas Stage Race has a very similar parcour to Joe Martin and had a much more level playing field in terms of competition.

Uphill TT: Cheyne, Lockwood, Blevins
Road Stage: Blevins, Swirbul, Rodriguez
Crit: Bassetti, Revard, Lockwood

GC: Lockwood, Revard, Cheyne

The crit proved decisive as the top three there had a small gap over the field.

One final event from last week was the Chad Young Memorial TT. A four mile (that's 6.44km before Fus says anything) effort up Lookout Mountain in Colorado. Mannion won by a fair bit over Newkirk, who himself was well ahead of Norris in third.

Could be a few changes to the linked start list. Mannion, Eaton and Putt aren't starting for UHC as an example.

Domination. Massive gap for such a short climb.

Not a lot of info or tweets from during the race, but going by what Aevolo tweeted the last of the break was caught at the start of the final climb.

Quote
The big break got established and Dennis Ramirez was there. As the race was coming down to crunch time  Brendan Rhim and Lionel Mawditt took off.  The remaining riders in the break were beginning to shatter so Dennis Ramirez  took off to chase.  Ruben Companioni bridged up to Dennis Ramirez and things were looking awesome until an unfortunate regurgitation from Dennis took place and he lost his cookies on the side of the road.

So the break won after all. Joe Lewis the first of the peloton at a guess.

Cowan up to 5th in the GC. His main weapon is his TT, but maybe not an uphill one.

Interesting to see a Guatemalan team participating. Monterroso and Rodas aren't so far back in the GC.

Very limited mobile coverage at the TT location. For everyone bar Gord that is.

I bet the riders are glad that it's a short crit.
