Title: [WT] Tour of California
Post by: Leadbelly on May 02, 2018, 12:00
Amgen Tour of California 13th - 19th May

Stage 1  »  Long Beach  ›  Long Beach (133km)

Stage 2  »  Ventura  ›  Gibraltar Road (155km)

Scene of Alaphilippe's triumph from two years ago.

Stage 3  »  King City  ›  Laguna Seca (197km)

Another finish from 2016. Some extra climbs before we get to the race circuit.

Stage 4  »  San Jose  ›  Morgan Hill (34.7km)

Too long for my liking, but will depend on who is riding.

Stage 5  »  Stockton  ›  Elk Grove (176km)

Stage 6  »  Folsom  ›  South Lake Tahoe (196.5km)

Skujins won here previously, but the stage is tougher now with the introduction of the climb to Daggett Summit.

Stage 7  »  Sacramento  ›  Sacramento (146km)

It appears no Team Jelly Belly this year?  #jellybelly

I perused the team website to see just which races they were doing, but after five minutes of not finding a clue, I realized I didn't really care anyway.

This too:

Yep, no more special treatment for California.

It must have been at least a bit embarrassing for the UCI to have a WT race with Conti teams last year. So - this is my speculation - they quietly told the *us Conti teams that every team that turned ProConti for 2018 would get an invite, but Conti teams would be left out.
That is really the only explanation for why three Conti teams suddenly stepped up.

Especially when they won two stages. :lol

This entitled moaning when they miss out on a race invite they wanted is not a good look for them, arrogant and a little disrespectful towards teams that are included.

Nobody owes them anything. If Cali want 4 US teams (who, as Lukas says, appear to have stepped up specifically for this, just like the Spanish teams stepped up for the Vuelta) then that's their right. If a race organiser made you a quiet promise and then broke it, going public is one thing, but getting mad over organisers choosing home teams is just futile and deluded.

The Tracker tends to be the best online coverage of any race I've ever seen. They generally have the technology dialed-in to provide a very worthwhile experience. While I'm not a huge fan of the race (and I still don't like the overlap with the Giro) I do enjoy the quality of coverage, and, for me, it's the rare experience of enjoying a late-afternoon, early-evening event. That NEVER happens in my time-zone.

OK, since I'm feeling a little bit lazy, and the AMGEN site is completely useless in this regard...

(Seriously, the link on the main website provides zero information).

Two absolute pan flatters and a climbing stage which has the same finish as the men's stage 6. Not so many of the big teams are riding it as it overlaps with the much more interesting Emakumeen Bira

I've really enjoyed recent editions. But you're right,  the quality of the coverage makes all the difference. We got rid of P&P a while ago, it would be interesting to know how many others from the great Armstrong connections pdf (https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://velorooms.com/files/ArmstrongBusinessConnections.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj8-vS1ioLbAhXKLMAKHXmNAIgQFjAAegQIBhAB&usg=AOvVaw1MXDL4vFovkualunktvikU)
are still involved in pro cycling

It's somewhat odd that they don't really spell it out anywhere on the website, besides the info in one of those videos. So it'll be the typical format of the women preceding the men on the same or similar course (for the last three days), and with the same finish line? It's just not clear to me.

[Edit]
OK, now I see a bit more. I was curious to see the race profiles, but it appears you have to go to each separate stage page, and then click the corresponding link on each page. Not the most efficient way to present that info. (These all seem to be pretty short stages.)

Women's stages profiles:

Stage 1 Thu, May 17
Elk Grove
Distance: 77.1 mi / 124 km
Start Time: 11:05 AM PST
Est. Finish: 2:25 PM PST

Stage 2 Fri, May 18

Start Time: 11:00 AM PST
Est. Finish: 2:21 PM PST

Stage 3 Sat, May 19
Sacremento
Distance: 43.5 mi / 70 km

Why is the sound on these highlight videos so low? Was the same with stage 1.
I have to turn up the volume a lot to understand anything of what P&P say.

Replay of the last time they visited Laguna Seca. As I said above though, this time there are a couple of extra climbs in the last 50km. A Sagan win still wouldn't surprise or it could be one for a strong break as there are plenty of candidates who lost a packet yesterday.

An actual stage podium: something we often refer to but, I think, rarely is actually seen.

Do any other major races actually put the first three on a stage on the stage together?

And what was with the smoke/dust, and a panicky looking marshall with a red flag, with a few hundred metres left?

The result does set up things nicely, though, for a showdown on stage 6.
Sky now have two cards to play, although, knowing them, TGH will have to go all in for Bernal, on the penultimate climb to Daggett Summit.
It could come down to the wire. :)

Even though he didn't get the stage win, Caleb Ewen is just so damn aero! His body always looks like a rocket heading to the line.
