Title: 2019-2021 Emerging Riders CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on December 31, 2018, 21:16
Fernando Gaviria, Gianni Moscon, Lilian Calmejeane, Marc Soler, and Egan Bernal are riders to be taken seriously in any race they enter and Richard Carapaz and Enric Mas have come 4th and 2nd in GTs this year.  But three years ago each of them were only beginning to make their names known.  They were among the top scorers in the recently finished 2016-2018 edition of the game, so the challenge to us all is to find those riders we will be speaking of in the same way as 2022 dawns.

Your Team is to consist of 18 male riders, each of whom has a maximum of 199 CQ points through their career, (so long as that total is not kept low because of results removed under doping sanctions)

Here is a very long list (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0uvaz8muuhuj451/2019-21%20emerging%20eligibility.xlsx?dl=0) of people who have appeared in CQ listings but without reaching 200 points: you may of course want to select riders who have never appeared.  It also includes a list of those who crossed the 200 threshhold during 2018 which might help you to remove some riders from your thinking.  I'll try to make lists of those eligible that appear in the Main and Youth CQ games that might be more manageable when the selection lists for those games are released.

Submit your team by PM to me, before the beginning of the Tour Down Under on January 15 (NB:This is earlier than previously, so be careful not to miss it).   As usual, names in CQ format please, with nothing else on the line. If the rider has no CQ page, then hope that SURNAME Forename is what CQ will go with (and if not I'll hopefully be able to track him down eventually).

My team has been sent to Jon Ezeitza, who submitted his team before I actually launched the game. I reserve the right to adjust it in the case of a rider emerging Gaviria-like before the deadline (although with the earlier deadline that should be less likely).

The score is CQ points gained over the next three years (the less-than-200 points before the game don't count) , the end of 2021 update being the end. I might need to be alerted to points from one year that are deleted the next. I aim to give updates monthly, but I usually fail in that when the GT games are on.

Entries with 24 hours to go before the deadline

Skidmark's great work on the 2019 CQ game brings to light 148 names eligible for this game who have been considered worth selecting in that game. That shortlist might be useful to you, and is on the dropbox spreadsheet mentioned on the first post.

And if you missed the deadline for that game, you still have plenty of time for this one..

I'm second guessing two spots on the team. Hope to get it in tomorrow.

As well as 148 riders from the Main Game selectees, the Youth game has added 67 more to give you a fairly long shortlist in the Dropbox spreadsheet (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0uvaz8muuhuj451/2019-21%20emerging%20eligibility.xlsx?dl=0) alongside the very longlist.

Post Merge: January 06, 2019, 22:29

Of course, they don't have to be from that shortlist, that is just trying to help.  On the 15 teams submitted so far, we have 107 different riders named, 19 of whom are in neither of the other games (presumably their managers see them really coming to the fore in year 2 or 3).

51 of the 107 are unique picks, and at the top of the popularity, the riders are currently neatly paired off: two on 13* teams, then also two each on 9, 8 and 7 teams.
Two teams share the top of the popularity rankings with 90% of the highest possible, while the lowest has 32% (and 12 unique picks at the moment).

* Yep: "He" is not on every team, and someone else is as popular as him.  Surprised me.

BTW

I would prefer that this game were for under-100-points riders only. I think in that case, there will be more diversity of choices and more bold picks.

Difficult to say if that would be true or not.

The WT and PCT picks would probably get a bit more homogeneous if anything. The amount of CT picks would probably increase though and people might feel a bit more adventurous selecting them, but even then they may just stick to certain teams or riders that have been stagiaires or names they've seen doing well at Nat Cup races, l'Avenir etc

Anyway I can't be bothered checking the ages or point brackets of mine. :D

Here's the nationalities though:

I'm glad I have a unique pick, didn't really expect that. Can't wait for the other statistics. The revealing of the teams is always of more interest than who won the first stage of TDU.

The rider stats

Here are those 130 riders, except for the 55 unique picks indicated with an asterisk in the lists above.
There are 31 teams, and the three who do not buy into the hype for Evenepoel are DJW, Leadbelly and Rote Laterne.

28:  EVENEPOEL Remco
25:  DEWULF Stan, MOSCHETTI Matteo
16:  ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves, VAN DEN BERG Julius
15:  AFFINI Edoardo, HÄNNINEN Jaakko
14:  ARENSMAN Thymen, DAINESE Alberto
13:  RIVERA SERRANO Kevin
12:  BENNETT Sean, CONCI Nicola, HONORE Mikkel Frølich, JOHANSEN Julius, WILLIAMS Stephen
11:  FABBRO Matteo, OSORIO CARVAJAL Alejandro
That is 17 names so far, so to complete the Collective Wisdom team, I will be taking an average of the scores of the three riders with nine picks each:
9:  BAGIOLI Andrea, RODRIGUEZ GARAICOECHEA Oscar, VACEK Karel
8:  BARCELO ARAGON Fernando, DE DECKER Alfdan, TANFIELD Harry, VANHOUCKE Harm, VILLALOBOS HERNANDEZ Luis Ricardo
7:  BOUCHARD Geoffrey
6:  BARBIER Pierre, CIMA Imerio, GROVES Kaden, HAYTER Ethan, MUÑOZ LANCHEROS Cristian Camilo, OLIVEIRA Rui Filipe Alves
5:  CASTRILLO ZAPATER Jaime, CHAMPOUSSIN Clément, GREGAARD WILSLY Jonas, MÜLLER Patrick, PARET-PEINTRE Aurélien, PIDCOCK Thomas, VINGEGAARD RASMUSSEN Jonas
4:  DE BOD Stefan, DONOVAN Mark, LYU Xianjing, MACIEJUK Filip, THIJSSEN Gerben, WHELAN James
3:  BADILATTI Matteo, FOSS Tobias Svendsen, GIBSON Matthew, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres, LEKNESSUND Andreas, LONARDI Giovanni, MÄRKL Niklas, PEAK Barnabas, PRONSKIY Vadim, STEIMLE Jannik, WARLOP Jordi
2:  BATTISTELLA Samuele, BYRIEL IVERSEN Rasmus, CONTRERAS PINZON Rodrigo, ERRAZKIN PEREZ Xuban, FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo, GALL Felix, GARCIA SOSA Jhojan Orlando, KOOISTRA Marten, LARSEN Niklas, MAYRHOFER Marius, MERTZ Rémy, NORSGAARD JØRGENSEN Mathias, QUINN Sean, RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto, SCOTSON Callum, SEIGLE Romain, VAN MOER Brent, VINCENT Léo, WAERENSKJOLD Soren

De Wulf was neck and neck with Evenepoel in the popularity for a long time (and actually overtook him briefly), Moschetti caught up with him only with the later teams.
Dainese ended up making the Collective Wisdom team, but it is as though there was some lobbying going on: with about half the teams in, he was still a unique pick.
There were two late swap-outs of Higuita, with his non-appearance in the EF team listing, but one manager swapped him into the team on that revelation.

Of course, popularity is even less of a guarantee in this game than in the other CQ games: In the three editions that have finished so far, the following have been among the best 18 picks that could have been made, but were not picked at all, or by 3 or fewer teams: THEUNS Edward, BENOOT Tiesj, VUILLERMOZ Alexis, LAMPAERT Yves, NAESEN Oliver, ROGLIC Primoz(twice), LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel, MOSCON Gianni, CALMEJANE Lilian, OOMEN Sam, ANDERSEN Søren Kragh, CAMPENAERTS Victor, BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley (twice), ACKERMANN Pascal, VAN AERT Wout, MAS NICOLAU Enric, CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio and several others, while the Collective Wisdom team has featured such disappointments (at least to the end of their respective games) as Alex Peters, Andrea Zordan, Frederick Ludwigsson, Campbell Flakemore, and Vincenzo Albanese (twice)

Nestling in there among the 5 pick riders is Aurelian Paret Peintre, who is the Carlos Betancur of this game as someone who managers keep coming back to, having been on at least one team each year since the 2015-17 edition.

Honestly, look at those riders that could've been picked, that weren't.

We're supposed to be cycling fans and yet Lopez, Bernal (twice)....what the flipity flip are we all on?

Team stats

Popularity rankings
I suppose with 31 teams, the highest possible popularity ranking would be 558, but that would mean all 31 teams having the same 18 men, and that would render the game rather pointless.

1   Hakkie   251
2   Kryvo   239
3   HugoKoblet   230
4   AmisVelo   228
5   Laarsland   226
6   Karaev   225
7   SafeBet   223
8   Cordi   220
9   Armchair_Cyclist   219 (1)
10   Del_1962   215
10   Flo   215  (1)
12   Ludwigzgz   214  (1)
12   Squire   214
14   Joelsim   203 (1)
15   Kazistuta   201 (1)
15   Madrazo   201
17   Skidmark   199 (2)
18   Blues_in_the_Bottle   197 (1)
19   RoteLaterne   196 (1)
20   Fauniera   181 (1)
21   Comodoro   177

25   Vladimir   153 (4)
26   DJW   151 (3)
27   JonEzeitza   147 (3)
28   Josedin   128 (6)
29   LukasCPH   125 (5)
30   Leadbelly   87 (7)
31   Koronin   69 (11)
   CollectiveWisdom   272
Number of unique picks in brackets

Pre-game career points
These have no significance for the game, they are something of an indicator of whether people have chosen riders who have already shown their promise among the professional ranks, although Evenepoel, for example, shows that plenty of publicity can be generated without even starting a .2 race.
There would be a theoretical maximum of 3582, but to find 18 riders all on 199 points would include some very unlikely picks.

1   DJW   2371
2   LukasCPH   2357
3   HugoKoblet   2216
4   Skidmark   2142
5   Scrooll07   2089
6   Armchair_Cyclist   1950
7   Flo   1914
8   RoteLaterne   1902
9   Karaev   1895
10   Kazistuta   1882
11   AmisVelo   1875
12   Blues_in_the_Bottle   1841
13   Hakkie   1830
14   AlyKaptan   1799
15   Joelsim   1783
16   Ludwigzgz   1767
17   Squire   1751
18   Comodoro   1732
19   Laarsland   1727
20   SafeBet   1692
21   Del_1962   1683
22   Kryvo   1661
23   Fauniera   1616
24   Madrazo   1595
25   Vladimir   1582
26   Leadbelly   1570.1
27   JonEzeitza   1551.2
28   Will10   1527.1
29   Cordi   1410
30   Koronin   1042.1
31   Josedin   790
   CollectiveWisdom   1827
Don't worry about the decimals: that is just a marker I have left for myself to keep an eye out for the riders who do not yet have a CQ page.

Team similarity
The greatest amount of overlap between any 2 teams (apart from Hakkie having 14 of the Collective Wisdom team) is 12, which is the size of Venn diagram intersections between Kryvo and Amis Velo, Laarsland and Flo, and Laarsland and Kryvo.
As to those who have no common interest at all, Leadbelly eschews every pick of Blues in the Bottle, DJW, Josedin, and Scrool07, while Koronin shuns the whole of Rote Laterne's team.  Leadbelly and Koronin also disagree with every one of each others picks.  Only Blues in the Bottle and Ludwigzgz manage as many as 4 of Koronin's picks.

Other than Hakkie having 14 of the Collective Wisdom team, Amis Velo, Hugo Koblet, Kryvo, Laarsland have 12 of the CW, while Josedin, Leadbelly and Koronin have 4, 3 and 2 of them respectively.

Sorry this is late: I have been rather distracted with all the Brexit debate while trying to do this.

Anything else worth knowing is in the spreadsheet at Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0czjmjpso1oe68t/emerging%20cq%202019%20to%202021.xlsx?dl=0).

Guessing my very high pre-game points and low popularity is in no small part down to my (probably insane) decision to eschew Remco. Very happy with 3 unique picks though in

There were two late swap-outs of Higuita, with his non-appearance in the EF team listing, but one manager swapped him into the team on that revelation.

I was one ot those who swapped out Higuita. And I'm starting to think it was a big mistake.

I didn't know where he was going to ride this year, and this was the motivation. But just today Landa's Fundación Euskadi team has been presented and Higuita is there. He will ride in the basque team the first half of the season and then jump to the WT with Vaughters EF team (as it was suposed in first place).

But the moment between EF roster presentation and Euskadi roster presentation, I had no idea about where Higuita was going to be. And that was just the last days to change our teams... Well, it's the game. Hope Vacek (his replacement) will adapt quickly from junior to pro races.

 :lol

Not knowing were Higuita will ride this year was the reason to drop him off my shortlist. Those young columbians often disappear after a promising season.

The message Armchair sent my when I changed Higuita for Vacek in the last moment... True words  :S

OK, done.  Now watch Higuita become a superstar.

Next year I have to be more patient and trust that the rider, if you know is good, has to have a team for sure - although he hasn't confirmed it yet.

Year 1, Month 1 to 3rd Feb

And off we go...

Picked riders' best scores
HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres      73 points (a 4th, a 6th and a 12th in Mallorcan races) for 3 teams (DJW, Ludwigzgz and Skidmark)
EVENEPOEL Remco      35pts (9th on GC and 3rd on a stage in San Juan)   28 teams
CONTRERAS PINZON Rodrigo      20 (4th in Colombian national TT)   2 (Comodoro, Hakkie)
FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo      17   2
SCOTSON Callum      14   2
WHELAN James      13   4
GARCIA SOSA Jhojan Orlando      9   2
Other popular riders to get off the mark already are HONORE and OSORIO (5 and 3 points, for 12 and 11 teams respectively)

And, largely because of Evenepoel being on >90% of teams, everyone has started scoring

1   Ludwigzgz   117 (Higuita, Evenepoel, Weemaes (6 pts) and Osorio)
2   Skidmark   108 (Higuita and Evenepoel)
3   DJW   97 (Higuita and Scotson)
4   Blues_in_the_Bottle   81(Evenepoel, Flores, Scotson)
5   Comodoro   76 (Evenepoel, Contreras and Whelan)
6   Hakkie   63
6   Scrooll07   63
8   Will10   53
9   Madrazo   52
10   Del_1962   48

26   Armchair_Cyclist   35
26   JonEzeitza   35
26   Karaev   35
30   Leadbelly   6
31   RoteLaterne   5
   CollectiveWisdom   43

Prior to this year I allowed entries right up to the end of January, meaning early results brought riders into a team: it worked very well for those picking Gaviria late in the 2015-17 game, not so much so for those who made a late inclusion of Najar a year ago.  So who would have been picked if entries closed a couple of weeks later this year?  Higuita might have had more picks (or at least fewer discards), but unpicked Aussie champion Freiberg already had his win before the game closed, and Dylan Sutherland had some of the points he now has.  Although he showed well rather than scoring highly, I guess Biniam Hailu might have gained some support if the Tropicale Amissa Bongo had been before the deadline: who would you have picked if you know halfway through the month what you know at the end of it?

The highest scoring unpicked riders:
FREIBERG Michael      105
QUIROZ AYALA Oscar Adalberto      100
SUNDERLAND Dylan      80
FOUCHE James      70
LEA Jason      62
OSORIO ARBOLEDA Juan Felipe      60
TESFOM Sirak      50
PAREDES AVELLANEDA Cesar Nicolas      50

The first update is probably more relevant for making sure the spreadsheet works than for the scores: here it is. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0czjmjpso1oe68t/Emerging%20CQ%202019%20to%202021.xlsx?dl=0) (I might not always post the link, but it should always be at the same place)

Maybe Sunderland or Fouche if he wasn't in an earlier team. Freiberg for one I can't see scoring too much more.

Evenepoel und Higuita for sure.
Biniam Hailu I considered for my youth team and swapped him out at the last minute.

Evenepoel und Higuita for sure.
I even had Higuita on my team, but dropped him at the last minute because he didn't have a team for 2019 (yet) and I couldn't find anything definite on the #ef contract.

Standings

DJW jumps from last to first of the trio of teams that stuck with Higuita, and which still fills the podium, and February's champion is the closest other team, with a 22 place jump that probably won't be repeated. Kazistuta (+15) and Amis Velo (+8) enter the top ten, for what it's worth at this stage.

Swirbul already 134 points. Was in my first selection, but I dropped him cause I didn't know anything about Landis team and maybe the WT-train was already gone.

But like with Higuita, I should trust my instinct. He's the tipical underdog talent: very promising but some problems stopped his progresion for a while. Note to myself: next year, more bold picks.

Swirbul was chosen once in the 2017-19 game, and I think more often in earlier, now completed, games, but not in this edition or the version that started last year.  I guess we collectively gave up on the early hype being realised.  Now priced out of future iterations.

Standings

Only Hugo Koblet breaks into the top ten, and does so with the biggest (8 place) jump.  That is largely because the top six other teams this month were already in the top ten.  Alykaptan, Kazistuta, Squire and Comodoro all move up within the top ten.

Year 1, Month 6 3rd to 30th June

Our first big win of the season, and the hype that 90% believed is looking true.

EVENEPOEL Remco      297 (Overall GC, with a stage win, leader points, plus third in national ITT and Limbirg Hammer team win) for 28 teams
LEKNESSUND Andreas      124 (National TT Champ, and 2nd in the road race, and Course de la Paix stage and GC wins) for Alykaptan, Lukas CPH and Squire
VAN ROOY Kenneth      87 (8th in national RR and lots of small point hauls) for DJW
LEYDER Pit      78 (12th in Tour of Lux and 3rd in national RR) for Joelsim
RODRIGUEZ GARAICOECHEA Oscar      74 (10th in Occitanie, 8th in Mt Ventoux, 7th in national ITT)   9 teams
BUDYAK Anatoliy      56   1
HAYTER Ethan      50   6
LARSEN Niklas      50   2
OURSELIN Paul      50   1

but we all missed Daniel Munoz, winner of the Tour of Bihor, and Filippo Zaccanti, winner of the Tour of Korea, both outscoring all bar Evenepoel this month.

1   AlyKaptan   690 (Evenepoel, Leknessund, Rodriguez and Larsen)
2   Squire   662 (Evenepoel, Leknessund and Hayter)
3   LukasCPH   623  (Evenepoel, Leknessund, Ourselin and Larsen)

   CollectiveIgnorance   918

Standings

Top scorer in June, and he was already in second: AlyKaptan takes the lead.  Squire leapfrogs Ludwigzgz to move 3rd, and behind that nearly everyone moves up as DJW suffers an Evenepoel related drop from 5th to 16th: he would be right up among the leaders if he hadn't been so resistant to the hype.  But none rise so rapidly as Joelsim, up 6 places and into the top ten.

I believe Paul Ourselin is the only rider selected in this who is riding the Tour de France, so we will have to look outside the hexagon for our July points.

Can't be sure when I am travelling, so July, for the purposes of our emergent games, might end on the 28th, or might end on 4th August: hopefully one of those two.

Until then, here's the spreadsheet. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0czjmjpso1oe68t/Emerging%20CQ%202019%20to%202021.xlsx?dl=0)

I'm away from my laptop for a few days, so the update won't be for the first Monday as I usually try.  Will probably do a mid August update, and then late September (after the Vuelta).  Same applies to the other two current editions.

Year 1, Month 7-8a 1 July to 11 August

Waiting until next year to pick Evenepoel really didn't work out for three teams

Standings

Skidmark was 2nd at the end of June, but top scorer this period, and 300 points more than the previous leader, gives a vert healthy looking lead at this stage. Joelsim and Vladimir make progress within the top ten, and Armchair Cyclist jumps 10 places to the heights of mid-table obscurity.

I need to do something tonight or tomorrow about getting the Vuelta game up and running, so that will occupy me for several weeks.  Expect the next update to be either late Sept or early October.

Waiting until next year to pick Evenepoel really didn't work out for three teams

He almost scored as many points as my 18 riders combined!  :S

I even had Higuita on my team, but dropped him at the last minute because he didn't have a team for 2019 (yet) and I couldn't find anything definite on the #ef contract.

Year 1, Month 8b-9 12 August to 29 September (sorry, I know that the data is a week old, but I don't want to get the three games out of synch)

LARSEN Niklas      218 points (Tour of Denmark win and stage points, Lillehammer win) for Alykaptan and LukasCPH
RODRIGUEZ GARAICOECHEA Oscar      212 (2nd in Vuelta a Burgos, 22nd in Vuelta a Espana) for 9 teams

No Trudgin this year, so it'll be harder to keep off the foot of the table for another two years.

Standings

Considering we have only had the first year, that lead of Skidmark's is getting serious.  Nit many significant scorers, so no-one moved up more than one place: Flo and Hugo did so within the top ten.

1   Skidmark   4330
2   AlyKaptan   3874
3   Ludwigzgz   3856

   CollectiveIgnorance   4566

I'll do an end of year update for the few remaining races, and any adjustments.  Until then, consider whether it is worth recycling any of your less successful riders in this game in the 2020-2022 edition.
