https://www.clippedin.bike/uci-teams-ready-for-epic-battle-at-this-years-tour-of-the-gila-2019/

Competing teams:

Wildlife Generation p/b Maxxis
ProTouch Continental Pro Cycling (South Africa)
Elevate KHS Pro Cycling
Floyd’s Pro Cycling (Canada)
303 Project
Aevolo
DCBank Pro Cycling Team (Canada)
Team Medellin (Colombia)
Canel’s Specialized (Mexico)

Project Echelon Racing
VeloSelect Racing Team (Quebec)
Semper Porro
Otto Jacome Cycling Team (Mexico)
Team California
Rio Grande Elite Cycling Team
Gateway Devo Cycling
Pacific Premier Bank Cycling
Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Equator
Support Clean Sport / BSCG / Guttenplan Coaching

Despite the fact the race has moved to two weeks later in the calendar ie. back to roughly it's old position of finishing a week before California starts, there is no sign of the local PCT outfits - Rally (defending champions with Britton) and Hagens Berman. Yorkshire is the preferred destination for both teams. Arapahoe are absent as well for whatever reason - the Gran Fondo Hincapie takes precedence?

Anyway outside of the Men's UCI event there are a few other riders that may be worth watching. In the Men's 1,2 category we have riding for LUX/Sideshow p/b Specialized both Quinn Simmons (1st GW juniors) and Michael Garrison (4th PR juniors and brother of Ian).

Also, in the women's UCI event should be Sarah Gigante (current Australian national champion) who will be riding for the composite Team HMS. Simone Boilard should give her competition for the best 18 yr old.

I have to admit lower level US races aren't that interesting to me, but I have to give you points for posting a stage map with my favorite place name of all names

 "Truth or Consequences, New Mexico"

I didn't say only in America  :D

No European racing for Medellin so far this year, but they have been racking up the race days (and wins) on the American Tour.

San Juan: 3rd in GC
Colombia: 14th in GC
Independencia: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in GC + two stage wins
Chiloe: 1st and 3rd in GC + three stage wins
Uruguay: 1st in GC + one stage win

If Mitchelton or Jumbo don't fancy one of the remaining spots at Utah then I'd be on the phone to them to see if they want to race (there's no clash with the Vuelta a Colombia this year).

Mornay van Heerden
Clint Hendricks
Pieter Seyffert
Mitch Eliot
James Fourie
Myles van Musschenbroek

Hendricks is the only one I really know of, after his successful spell at Bike Aid towards the end of last year. Fairly quick.

Weird. "Kicked off its first UCI America Tour race when the Tour of the Gila got under way"? Um, that's not until tomorrow.  :S

It's the time difference. ;)

 1. It is not the time difference at all - just sloppy writing.

The two man break sat up when they saw the bunch approaching. Larger split now. Possibly due to a crash a bit earlier.

You don't need me to pick out the names from the big CT teams, but here's some others to watch out for.

Newkirk - Good TTer and can hang in there on some of the climbs
Pavlic - Ex-geeeeeeeeeeeek. Being doing quite well actually in some exotic places
Boardman - Can he show us why he was selected for the US team in California?
Lockwood - Another good TTer. Winner of Redlands and Valley of the Sun this year
Gonzalez - 18 year old Puerto Rican. 13th in Independencia.

Tvetcov and Clarke finished way down for Floyd's. Other targets in mind you'd think.

They were metaphorically not at the race, but literally not at the race was Quinn Simmons. It was his bete noire Michael Garrison who took the win in their category.

Therefore the situation has moved on a bit.

Break consists of Greif, Stephens, Hall, Haidet, Cowan and Samuel (again). Zavyalov was chasing.

A crash on stage 1 explains the time loss on that day for him.

Big time for losses for Sevilla's team mates, so Medellin only have the one card left.

Sam Boardman doing pretty well I have to say. It just goes to show.

It turns out that there was a live video feed from today's stage after all, but I only became aware of it after-the-fact. Although, it looked like no more than a fixed camera from a building top.

Anyway, I'm mostly posting these because I'm quite fond of that red, Gila leader's jersey!  :cool

I knew about, but it's just really a webcam. It's still on at the moment. In fact there's a rather suspicious sports car just idling at the lights....

Good win for Young. I think he has an eye on the Olympics and track cycling which might explain why he made the move from PCT down to CT.

I'm thinking maybe the women setup a "Wile E. Coyote" type "detour" and sent the men traveling off in the wrong direction.

Massive gaps unless your were in that front group. Roberge the big loser (42+ minutes), but since his team leader held onto for the GC win, he probably won't be too unhappy.

To be fair, if there's no coverage in the area, there's not that much they can do. We've been in similar situations in Sibiu - but that was half an hour at most (if that).

Possible solutions:
1) Get a mobile phone provider to set up cell towers - unlikely (unless they become a race sponsor and that's payment in kind)
2) If there is mobile phone coverage, but no mobile internet coverage, send texts with updates to someone stationary (at the finish?, at least somewhere where there is internet coverage) who relays the updates onto Twitter

Or...relay info by CB radio or something similar? There must be a way to establish some sort of communication, I would think.

(Although, realistically, I realize that just not that many people are paying attention, or even care too much, one way or the other.)

Or that - though the range of those may not be enough to get out of the (apparently rather large) no-coverage area. And from personal experience, verbal communication is fraught with the danger of misunderstanding. Written communication less so.

Just FYI, this area is quite close (measured in texas distance)  to one of the main space - and - nuclear - weapons facilities of the USA -  so it's got to be really at the back of beyond.  :S
Instead of a cell phone company, get an army unit with a communications company, they have both the equipment and the competence for handling the outback, and they will often appreciate a little technical exercise without the ordinary objectives of dealing or averting death and destruction.
