Title: 2019 Giro CQ game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on May 02, 2019, 23:30
Some of you already know all this, and just need the nod to get started, but it is great to have new players.

Your team
You need to name 8 riders who will be on the startline for the Giro, and who have a total CQ value for the 12 months to 5th May (the Sunday before the start) of 3500 or less.  Those prices are as reported in the CQ download published on 6th May.
If you pick a rider who is not on the final startlist, or your team is overbudget, I will use the next cheapest replacement from the same team, or the cheapest rider in the game if that isn't possible.1
There is a spreadsheet available on Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/eujvc47elid850a/Giro%202019%20team%20selector.xls?dl=0) that will help you get your 8 men within budget, and arrange it for submission.

Entering the game
Send your team to me by PM on either Velorooms or Cycling News forums.  If you do not have sufficient posts to your name at CN, then you will find no such restriction at Velorooms. (I sent my team to Koronin on Monday evening, but had to change it when Osorio was removed from the line-up)
Please send your riders' names only (not the price, not their team, preferably not even a following space) in CQ format (Surname then forename, both family names for Spanish and Portuguese riders).  If you use the spreadsheet, that will be easy.
Entries must be sent in before the race starts, which is 16:45 local time on 11th May.  If you don't wait until the last moment, I will have a better chance of warning you if there is a problem with the team.

The game
Your riders will get points for stage positions (70 for the winner, down to 1 for 10th), for starting a stage in the pink jersey (18 points) and for their standings in the points and mountains categories (but not the U25s) with points given on the same scale, and GC standing (ranging from 500 for the leader to 16 for 50th, and 15 for everyone else).  Those standings points can obviously increase or decrease, and gradually become a closer indication of what the final scores will be as the race goes on.
I will update daily, allowing you to become very optimistic until your top performers eventually drop away and/or withdraw from the race.

There is a secondary competition, which I will do differently from previous years, and for which I will probably try to find some name other than the cyclamen ranking.  Every one of our teams will have a score each day which is the sum of stage points, perhaps pink jersey points, and fluctuations in the three standings competitions: the top ten teams will gain points, in the same scale as stage points, which will comprise the subsidiary competition.  This is similar to the Green points sub-ranking I ran in the recent Spring Classics game.

Enjoy the game, and good luck to your team.

[1]: If 2 riders are joint cheapest, I'll use the first one alphabetically.  With the teams now confirmed, you risk ending up with Sho Hatsuyama of Nippo Vini Fantini.

If you go 24 hours after sending me your team without seeing it here, it might be worth sending me a follow-up PM or mentioning it on the thread.

The start list is now confirmed, barring last minute replacements due to injury or other unforeseen situation.

11 teams have been entered for the game so far, nominating 36 riders, 5 of whom are on more than half the teams.  One team has the maximum possible popularity ranking at present.

There have been more riders costing over 700 points selected than costing under 100.

21 teams in so far.  Three riders are way ahead of the rest in terms of popularity, and one of them is an almost universal pick.

I am out on Saturday and Sunday, so if you want to be warned of any problem with your team and have a chance to change it, I will need to have it by mid-morning on Saturday.

It also means that I will probably not do the full listing of teams and analysis until late on Sunday, maybe Monday, and Saturday results might be brief, or delayed.

This morning's inbox brings the game up to 41 teams so far, with time left for those who like leaving things until the last minute.

I will only have odd bits of time to get in front of my computer for the next few days, and my poor typing and hit and miss Excel skills mean that I don't produce data very efficiently.

So team lists, rider popularity tables, similarity of major picks, and even the results of the first couple of stages will on an uncertain schedule, unless...

If anyone thinks they can make sense of a rather raw version of the spreadsheet, and post some useful data here and on CN, then contact me within the next 20 minutes or so, and I'll give you the dropbox link.

Probably should have made the game 2886 points to pick 7 riders.

But there are 2 teams who, should Nibali fail somehow, get a 614pt bonus.

Until about the 18th team came in, I thought I was going to have Roglic as a unique pick.  My thinking was that he would get enough pink jersey points from today until the next GC relevant stage that it won't matter if he doesn't win in the end.

Plan working so far.

My thoughts exactly, it worked last year with a cheaper pick. I'm curious to know whether picking Landa or Ewan was the better strategy.

Plan actually working better than I had thought.  I'll put up more to explain how these numbers came about presently, but, after Stage 1:

Rider popularity

43: NIBALI Vincenzo (Out of 45 teams: Otoxiep and Squire are the two who declined him)
32: LANDA MEANA Mikel
30: O'CONNOR Ben
20: EWAN Caleb
19: ZAKARIN Ilnur (all but one of the Zakarin teams also have Landa)
18: CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban
11: ROGLIC Primoz
10: AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey, SIVAKOV Pavel
All of the above are on the Collective Wisdom, apart from Roglic, who would have put it way over budget.  Without him, it does come up rather underspent, at 3057

8: COVILI Luca, SENNI Manuel
7: KANGERT Tanel
6: FORMOLO Davide, MODOLO Sacha, NIZZOLO Giacomo
5: CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, MOSCHETTI Matteo
4: AGNOLI Valerio, BATTAGLIN Enrico, CIMOLAI Davide, DE GENDT Thomas, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, JUNGELS Bob, ORSINI Umberto, PLAZA MOLINA Ruben, RENSHAW Mark, YATES Simon
3: CICCONE Giulio, GAROSIO Andrea, GEOGHEGAN HART Tao, GIBBONS Ryan, HATSUYAMA Sho, HIRT Jan, KNOX James, MASNADA Fausto

and the 22 unique picks are shown above.

Team popularity
43 points if you have Nibali, 1 point for any unique pick.

43   LightBing   91
44   Koronin   81
45   Josedin   77
   Collective_Wisdom   182

Josedin's in the least popular team, but has no unique picks: Koronin's is the most unique team, with 6 otherwise unselected riders.  DJSprtsch, with 3 unique picks, is her nearest challenger in that regard.

Major picks
I was going to only include riders more expensive than Nibali in this analysis, but the popularity of Zakarin and Landa led me to include down to them.  The lower threshhold for including riders than I have had in other games means that some teams have as many as 5 of these important buys.

Dumoulin   with Nibali alone:   God Child

Roglic   with Nibali   and Ewan:   BikeRacer33,   Mellow Velo

Stage 1
The top 20 riders, omitting those that none of us chose:

ROGLIC Primoz   698 pts   11 teams
YATES Simon   480   4
NIBALI Vincenzo   365   43
DUMOULIN Tom   260   1
MAJKA Rafal   244   2
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao   200   3
DE PLUS Laurens   171   1
CARUSO Damiano   137   1
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   120   1
DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor   112   2
JUNGELS Bob   104   4
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   96   5
KANGERT Tanel   90   7
CICCONE Giulio   85   3
CARTHY Hugh   84   2
FORMOLO Davide   74   6

Quick explanation for anyone new to these games/reminder for the rest: Roglic got 70 points for winning the stage, and 18 for being awarded the pink jersey, that he cannot lose, even if he does not finish the race.  He also is credited with 500 for leading the GC, 70 for leading the points classification, and 40 for current second place in the KoM standings (Ciccone is leading that) 70+18+500+70+40 = 698.(No points for Youth rider standings: hard luck to those with Geoghegan Hart)  But if Roglic drops away in those classifications, he loses some of those projected points, negative points each day can happen.  When we get down to Bilbao in 11th, he has no stage (or  points or mountain standing), but 11th in GC gives 120 projected points, part of a sliding scale that goes down to 16 for 50th.  And every rider below 50th on GC still gets 15 points so, given that nobody chose Nishimura, everyone has at least 8x15=120 points.

The top ten teams, not surprisingly, are the ten who have Nibali and Roglic: those two alone are worth 1063 at present, enough to beat 11th.  So how the remaining 900 odd points were spent  determines placings, the most relevant back up riders in their team are given here:

1   Armchair_Cyclist   1278 (Kangert, Chaves, O'Connor)
2   Karaev   1236 (Chaves, Sivakov, O'Connor)
3   SafeBet   1220 (Chaves, O'Connor, Landa)
4   Nathanptz   1207 (O'Connor, Sivakov, Davies)
5   Mellow_Velo   1203 (Chaves, O'Connor)
6   BikeRacer33   1190 (Chaves)
7   Rote_Laterne   1187 (O'Connor, Landa, Plaza)
8   LosBrolin   1183 (O'Connor, Landa)
8   Shalgo   1183  (O'Connor, Landa)
10   Leadbelly   1174 (Landa, Plaza)

To which information, I can only say, "Come on Tanel"

Purplish Points
(because I'm not convinced that 'cyclamen' is used as a colour name in English, and although I'm no horticulturalist, the few pics I googled of that flower are not the colour of that jersey)

This is equivalent to the Green Jersey points in the Main and the Spring Classics games: the top ten scoring teams each day get points from 70 down to one.  Obviously on stage 1 the standings and the daily points are the same, so those ten teams above get the points, and for Los Brolin and Shalgo the points for 8th and 9th are averaged out between them.

Armchair_Cyclist   70
Karaev   40
SafeBet   25
Nathanptz   15
Mellow_Velo   10
BikeRacer33   7
Rote_Laterne   5
LosBrolin   2.5
Shalgo   2.5
Leadbelly   1

Thanks for the quick updates even on weekends you are away. I should have read your opening post but do you do this year only the earned points plus projected points without rankings of  stage points and sum of earned points?

Oops: I mentioned that I'm a poor typist, and I sometimes drag text rather than retype, and names that incorporate numbers can be a nuisance in that regard.  That should be ArchieBoy: apologies to him

That's right: the secondary competition has been changed to one based on the position of our teams each day.  It is a table I always produced anyway, but never used, and the guaranteed points were not really independent enough of the overall points to be a separate classification.  We'll see how it goes...

Stage 2

Sprinters are a tricky pick in this game: one who dominates the flat stages can sometimes score as well as a top 5 GC contender, but such a rider is usually expensive, and the drop away in returns is dramatic: four stage wins are worth 280 points, but 4 5th places will only get 40 points, and won't be going anything for their GC ranking in the process.

So Ackermann, Viviani and Demare being unpicked is understandable.  That does mean, however, that points gained are unimpressive today:
EWAN Caleb   32 pts (25 points on the stage, 7 projected points for lying 6th in the points competition)   20 teams
FRAPPORTI Marco   20 (position in points and KoM classifications gained on break)   2 teams
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   17   4
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   15 (moved up in GC because De Plus dropped way down the rankings)   1team
CARUSO Damiano   14   1
O'CONNOR Ben   14   30
DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd   12   1
LANDA MEANA Mikel   12   32
I won't give all the riders in credit most days (there were another 19 today, and that is only among riders who we selected): the threshhold for getting mentioned will vary according to how dramatic the scores on the day are.

But riders can get negative day scores: Roglic dropped to 3rd in boththe points and KoM classifications today, so dropped 45 and 15 points respectively.  That was mitigated by the 18 points  he got for the pink jersey, but still gives a daily liability of -42.  He was not alone...

DUMOULIN Tom   -10pts   1 team
MAJKA Rafal   -15   2
NIBALI Vincenzo   -20   43
ROGLIC Primoz   -42   11
YATES Simon   -45   4
CAMPENAERTS Victor   -51   1
DE PLUS Laurens   -153   1

So compiling those rider score changes for the day, we get each manager's day score:
1   Otoxiep87   101 (70 Purplish points)
2   TotalPackage   67 (45)
3   Googolplex   57 (25)
4   AmisVelo   56 (15)
5   Laarsland   54 (10)
6   Flo   , Scrool07   53 (6 each)
8   PremierAndrew   51 (3)
9   Comodoro   50 (2)
10   Salvarani   49 (1)
11   ChrisDK, Fauniera, Triley36, Will10   42
15   Minessa   40
16   Kazistuta   36
17   Del1962   35
18   Tobydawq   33
19   ArchieBoy, Carlo_Algatrensig   29
21   Bminchow, Search, Torcia86   26
24   Josedin, Yellow_Knight   12
26   Vladimir   8
27   LightBing   1
28   Squire   0
29   Tigerion   -10
30   Mellow_Velo   -12
31   GodChild   -22
32   BikeRacer33   -26
33   Rote_Laterne   -27
34   Koronin   -28
35   SafeBet   -32
36   BicycleBoy   -34
37   LosBrolin, Shalgo   -36
39   Armchair_Cyclist   -38
40   Karaev   -40
41   Leadbelly   -41
42   BluesInTheBottle, JustSomeGuy   -47
44   Nathanptz   -52
45   DJSprtsch   -136
   Collective_Wisdom   54

Purplish points
We have had two mutually exclusive batches of points so far, for basically a load of tied positions:
1   Armchair_Cyclist, Otoxiep87   70
3   Karaev, TotalPackage   40
5   Googolplex, SafeBet   25
7   AmisVelo, Nathanptz   15
9   Laarsland,    Mellow_Velo   10
11   BikeRacer33   7
12   Flo, Scrool07   6
14   Rote_Laterne   5
15   PremierAndrew   3
16   LosBrolin, Shalgo   2.5
18   Comodoro   2
19   Leadbelly, Salvarani   1

Standings
Those who did well yesterday did poorly today, and vice versa, but that also means that there are few GC changes, and that is where the majority of points are found, so the standings are not enormously changed.  Mellow Velo's move from 5th to 3rd might be the most significant, but it is Flo and Laarsland who share the mention for the biggest, 4 place, jump of the day.

1   Armchair_Cyclist   1240
2   Karaev   1196
3   Mellow_Velo   1191
4   SafeBet   1188
5   BikeRacer33   1164
6   Rote_Laterne   1160
7   Nathanptz   1155
8   LosBrolin   1147
8   Shalgo   1147
10   Leadbelly   1133
11   BicycleBoy   984
12   Tigerion   941
13   BluesInTheBottle   938
13   JustSomeGuy   938
15   Squire   930
16   Tobydawq   880

Stage 3
Worked out even better for the Gaviria teams than looked to be the case initially.  Not so good for teams with top 20 GC guys who got caught out in the late crashes, but their losses made space for others to move up on GC.

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   144pts for Googolplex, Otoxiep87, Salvarani and Total Package

Purplish points

Two wins in a row: maybe the lack of Nibali from Otoxiep's team was a masterstroke.
Salvarani mmoves into the top ten and Bminchow goes from zero to almost in the top ten.

Standings
Kangert finishing in the Carapaz group at 46 seconds was enough to know me off my perch, Sivakov remaining aamong the front group to give Karaev the lead.  SafeBet moves from 4th to 2nd, and Nathanptz, Los Brolin and Shalgo each move up 2 among the top ten, which remains dominated by the Roglic/Nibali combo.  The top 5 in the day rankings all have double figure improvements in their positions, with the 21 place leap by Total Package being the biggest.

Well that's a nuisance.

I had downloaded all the rankings before I went out at about 7pm, although I didn't post the info until I got back at 9:30: how was I supposed to know that they made a mid-evening decision to dock Viviani 50 points?
So the following riders are the following number of points better off, by virtue of moving up the points rankings (he is low enough in GC for it not to make a difference to anyone's score there):
Moschetti Matteo   5
Yates Simon  3
Roglič Primož   2
Cimolai Davide   2
Nizzolo Giacomo   1
López Miguel Ángel  1
Ewan Caleb   1

Which means the day scores are now:
1   Otoxiep87   225
2   TotalPackage   215
3   Salvarani   122
4   Googolplex   118
5   Bminchow   115
6   Laarsland   102
7   DJSprtsch, Kazistuta   84
9   Vladimir   77
10   Karaev   75
11   AmisVelo   71
12   Del1962, Search   69
14   Yellow_Knight   67
15   Squire   62
16   Comodoro   55
17   Nathanptz, PremierAndrew   44
19   Triley36   43
20   SafeBet   41
21   LosBrolin, Shalgo   40
23   GodChild   32
24   Koronin   29
25   BicycleBoy   28
26   BluesInTheBottle, JustSomeGuy, Rote_Laterne   27
29   Mellow_Velo   21
30   LightBing   19
31   BikeRacer33   7
32   Leadbelly   -4
33   Tigerion   -9
34   Armchair_Cyclist   -12
35   Torcia86   -16
36   ArchieBoy, Fauniera   -29
38   Scrool07   -48
39   Josedin   -68
40   Minessa   -82
41   Will10   -95
42   Flo   -134
43   Carlo_Algatrensig   -144
44   ChrisDK   -161
45   Tobydawq   -166
   Collective_Wisdom   89

So the Purplish point standings are:
1   Otoxiep87   140
2   TotalPackage   80
3   Armchair_Cyclist   70
4   Karaev   41
5   Googolplex   40
6   Salvarani   26
7   SafeBet   25
8   Laarsland   17
9   AmisVelo   15
9   Nathanptz   15
11   Bminchow   10
11   Mellow_Velo   10
The changes gave Karaev 10th on the day, pushing him ahead of Googolplex in this amendment, and removing the differential between Amis Velo and Nathanptz

And the overall standings are now:
1   Karaev   1271
2   SafeBet   1229
3   Armchair_Cyclist   1228
4   Mellow_Velo   1212
5   Nathanptz   1199
6   LosBrolin   1187
6   Rote_Laterne   1187
6   Shalgo   1187
9   BikeRacer33   1171
10   Leadbelly   1129
11   BicycleBoy   1012
12   Squire   992
13   BluesInTheBottle   965
13   JustSomeGuy   965
15   Tigerion   932
16   Del1962   870
17   Googolplex   843
18   TotalPackage   819
19   LightBing   808
20   GodChild   795
21   Bminchow   763
22   Laarsland   752
23   Salvarani   746
24   Vladimir   730
25   Search   721
26   Tobydawq   714
27   Koronin   698
28   Yellow_Knight   692
29   DJSprtsch   689
30   Fauniera   678
31   AmisVelo   660
32   Torcia86   650
33   Kazistuta   644
34   Comodoro   638
35   Otoxiep87   635
36   Minessa   624
37   Will10   623
38   ArchieBoy   614
39   Flo   604
40   Josedin   598
41   PremierAndrew   595
42   Carlo_Algatrensig   586
42   Scrool07   586
44   Triley36   585
45   ChrisDK   570
   Collective_Wisdom   713

The only actual change in order is that Kazistuta is ahead of, rather than level with, Comodoro in 33rd.

Hope they don't do many of these late adjustments...

Stage 5
A bit of a damp squib, and a very damp squib at that.  The early time taking probably contributed to the almost total lack of GC position change, so points for the stage are the main element today, along with pink jersey points and some shuffling of the points classification.

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   55pts   4 teams
EWAN Caleb   20   20

The top two share 5 of their riders; it is O'Connor, Clarke and Orsini for Mellow Velo against Gastauer, Poljanski and Garioso for BikeRacer33.

Tomorrow should see a number of riders who don't really belong in the GC top 30 drop down, so we might begin to get a better idea of how those cheaper "He might get a few GC points" type picks are going to contribute.

Hmm: this will be a fairly substantial change in the update...

Stage 6

L'Aquila-esque on the eve of L'Aquila.

If anyone had included Conti, that woiuld have been a 538 point gain on the day.  Only 5 selected riders in profit, there were a few who lost less than 20 not shown.

12 teams still not off the mark in this one.

Standings
In a few days, we might return to something like the table was yesterday, but for now, it is very different.  Shalgo is the only one of the top ten this morning who had 2 of today's positive riders (Carboni and Amador), and goes from 6th to top.  The only others who retain a top ten place are Leadbelly (through Antunes), and Nathanptz, Rote Laterne and Los Brolin (all courtesy of Amador). The top 5 this morning were the bottom 5 in today's scores, and now find themselves in the 11th to 18th range.

Vladimir goes from 22nd to second.  Of the new entrants in the top ten, three have jumped more than 30 places.  A 33 place rise is not enough to give Carlo Algatrensig the climber laurels, nor is 34 places for ArchieBoy: it is Triley who gets that honour, moving 35 places.

Stage 7
Another breakaway, although to rather less dramatic effect.  The long term effect of today's winner gaining time might be greater than yesterday's though.

BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   133 pts for Koronin
GALLOPIN Tony   84   for Bicycle Boy and Vladimir
FORMOLO Davide   67   for  DJ Sprtsch, Laarsland, Minessa, Tobydawq, Torcia86 and Vladimir
EWAN Caleb   10 for 20 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   9   5
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao   8   3
VILLELLA Davide   8   1
VUILLERMOZ Alexis   8   2

NIBALI Vincenzo   -12   43
ROGLIC Primoz   -13   11
YATES Simon   -14   4

MODOLO Sacha   -15   6
CARUSO Damiano   -55   1
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando   -55   4
CARBONI Giovanni   -68   2

Gaviria at least leaves his 4 teams with 125 stage points, so some compensation there.

Purplish Points

Koronin shows how high a day win will get you from zero score, Laarsland re-enters the top ten, and Vladimir gets onto the virtual podium.

Standings

Yesterday's top two had a good margin by virtue of having Carboni in second place: he has fallen to third, but that does not diminish their margin much.  Vladimir has the men second and third across the line today, so that puts him in the lead.  ArchieBoy, Triley and Carlo Algatrensig all move the right direction in the top ten, and Tobydawq takes a ten place jump.

Standings

On a day of low scores, the top two were never going to be threatened, but in the congested area below, any team with Evans is likely to have moved up, including Triley36, Total Package and Carlo Algatrensig into 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively, and Del1962, Mellow Velo and BikeRacer33 into the top ten.  The biggest risers are Fauniera and Scrool07 (6 spots).

Standings
The ten Roglic & Nibali teams once again occupy the top ten places, but in a rather different order than before the stage 6 breakaway.
Because of Carboni, Shalgo was already the best placed of the Roglic teams, so no surprise that he regains the lead.  The next three places are taken by Amador teams, the top three on the day scores, each with a 10 place rise.  There are three more teams re-entering the top ten, but it is just outside that that we find the biggest riser on this stage: Nibali-less Roglic team Squire with a 20 place jump.

The next two stages should see a swing in favour of the Ewan teams, although there are some other sprinters not mentioned here that might get decent returns, and after that it is really about how far the interlopers (Carboni, Antunes, Amador and Masnada) might fall: Amador has top tenned in the Giro twice before.  And in what order the contenders for a high place arise.

When Conti slips from Pink, as he surely must, the top 11 will extend their margin over the rest by 125 points (plus 18 a day) if Roglic takes over: should Nibali get into position for his third Giro win, we are (apologies, Squire and Otoxiep) pretty much as we stand.

And although it is no longer the "official" secondary competition, the guaranteed points standings (so that you know what your score is if all your riders decide that they enjoyed the rest day so much that they take the next two weeks off as well) are:

1   BikeRacer33   427

Stage 10

No selected rider in the top three on the day, no-one getting the pink jersey points, no change in GC position among those who get more than the 15 finisher points, no Mountain classification points on offer, just a handful of stage points and a slight reshuffle in the lower half of the Ciclamino top ten.  The effects of today's stage on tomorrow's start line might change the game more than the stage itself did.

EWAN Caleb   15   20
CIMOLAI Davide   14   4
NIZZOLO Giacomo   10   6
...
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   -1   1

Purplish points

At least the points won in this classification are just as many as they are in a TT or a major mountain stage. Scrool07 moves up to 2nd, Flo is up 4 to 4th, and Premier Andrew had a jump of 8 places.  Because we are abut halfway through, and because I had intended putting it in the rest day update but forgot, here is the full table so that some can see just how badly they are doing.

1   Otoxiep87   190.65
2   Scrool07   156
3   TotalPackage   134.65
4   Flo   131

Standings
Surprisingly, there was some change, although you have to look down to Fauniera in 21st to find anyone changing position here.
Even more surprisingly, these margins managed to generate a 3 place boost in position for Flo

1   Shalgo   1299

It would be nice to think that this was a uniquely bland stage, but have you seen tomorrow's stage profile?

Stage 11

Slightly more impact than yesterday: Ewan got a better result, the withdrawal of Moschetti means there is some GC point change, and slightly more movement in the points classification.  But not a lot.

EWAN Caleb   70 points   20 teams
CIMOLAI Davide   13   4
CONSONNI Simone   7   1
GIBBONS Ryan   5   3
NIZZOLO Giacomo   4   6
MARECZKO Jakub   2   2
...
CICCONE Giulio   -1   3
ROGLIC Primoz   -5   11
MOSCHETTI Matteo   -16   5

1   Flo, Scrool07   83 (55 Purplish points)
3   Triley36   76 (25)
4   Will10   75 (15)
5   Carlo_Algatrensig, PremierAndrew   74 (8.5)
7   Otoxiep87   72 (5)
8   AmisVelo, ChrisDK, Comodoro, Del1962, Googolplex, Minessa, Tigerion, TotalPackage   70 (0.75)
16   Fauniera   69
17   BikeRacer33, Mellow_Velo   65
19   Kazistuta   58
20   Laarsland   54
21   ArchieBoy, Salvarani   13

43   Bminchow   -16
44   Armchair_Cyclist, Karaev   -21
   Collective_Wisdom   70

Purplish points

Otoxiep87 has been at least joint leader of this since stage 2: Scrool07 now overtakes him. Flo shares not only the daily win for a second time, but also the podium and a one place rise. Triley appears in the top ten on a four place rise

1   Scrool07   211
2   Otoxiep87   195.65
3   Flo   186
4   TotalPackage   135.4
5   Vladimir   104.5
6   Googolplex   88.4
7   Armchair_Cyclist   86.5
8   Nathanptz   85
9   Triley36   83.47
10   Carlo_Algatrensig   75.17

Standings

What is probably Ewan's last contribution to their scores (unless you count a 40 point deduction likely tomorrow) gives both Mellow Vellow and BikeRacer a 3 place jump to the podium positions.  Premier Andrew and Tigerion are joint biggest jumpers, both moving 4 places.

1   Shalgo   1294
2   Mellow_Velo   1210
3   BikeRacer33   1200
4   Rote_Laterne   1178

Stage 12

That's more like it, even if the gains of Nibali are basically neutralised by his near ubiquity

Ewan leaves his teams with a legacy of 235 stage points.

1   Torcia86   264 (Nibali, Carapaz, Zakarin and Landa, but Formolo and O'Connor) (70 purplish points)
2   Tobydawq   235  (Nibali, Carapaz, Kangert and Landa, but Formolo and O'Connor) (40)

Purplish points

Torcia dropped out of the top ten yesterday: back in it with a big jump today (but not as big as Josedin's 11 places mid-table).  The top three are unchanged.

1   Scrool07   218
2   Otoxiep87   195.65
3   Flo   186
4   Torcia86   140
5   TotalPackage   135.4
6   Vladimir   104.5
7   Googolplex   93.4
8   Armchair_Cyclist   86.5
9   Nathanptz   85
10   Triley36   83.47

Standings

The drop away of the stage 6 breakaway men topples Shalgo from top spot.  Although their main characteristic to distinguish thenm from the other Roglic teams was a DNF this morning, BikeRacer and Mellow Velo have been left enough credit by Ewan to fill the top two slots, with Los Brolin, courtesy of unique pick Montaguti, taking third.  Del1962 enters the top ten, infiltrating the stronghold of Roglic teams, largely through rare pick Majka, while daily winner Torcia is the rocket of the day, up 13 places.

Stage 13 and the first MTF

Lots of points for popular riders (but not the most popular one), as the pack closes on Roglic and the other teams close on the Roglicianados

ZAKARIN Ilnur   313pts   19 teams
LANDA MEANA Mikel   128   32
SIVAKOV Pavel   82   10
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   65   5

Huge scores: all but one of the Zakarin teams also have Landa, so that's 441 points before they look at the rest of their riders.

1   Fauniera   630  (Zakarin, Landa, Sivakov, Ciccone, Kangert) (70 purplish points)
2   Torcia86   578 (Zakarin, Landa, Carapaz, Formolo)  (40)

Standings

A totally different game.   Teams with Roglic and Nibali have filled the top ten most days: now the only Roglic team in the top 9 is Squire, the only one without Nibali.

That huge daily winning score brings Fauniera from 17th to first, Del in second is the only one from yesterday's top ten to move up (8 places), and Torcia, now 3rd, was 23rd this morning (and 36th yesterday morning).  But 20 places is not enough to secure best jump of the day plaudits again: Salvarani is up 23 spots.

All but one of Fauniera's team has (for now, at least) more than 100 points.  What are the odds on Miguel Florez winning the stage tomorrow and getting enough KoM points to make the top 4 in that ranking, to complete his set?

Even if that doesn't happen, I suspect big changes are on the cards again for tomorrow.

Standings

Of the 5 Carapaz teams, Scrool07 was by far the highest placed yesterday: 3rd as against 24th, 26th, 28th and 37th.  But he had Zakarin, so moved up just one spot, as opposed to the average 25 places  (max 30 for Josedin) of the others.  So Archieboy takes the lead,  despite having been nearly 300 points adrift yesterday.

Stage 15  Giro d'Italombaordia

An interesting enough stage, with potentially important time differences but few major positional changes, and only minor stage points for selected riders, so not many game points.

YATES Simon   41pts   4 teams
CARTHY Hugh   33   2
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio   28   5

SIVAKOV Pavel   -15   10
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro   -19   2
KANGERT Tanel   -38   7
GALLOPIN Tony   -44   2

The Yates teams finally get an appearance in the daily table (1st, 2nd, 6th and, errrm, 24th (Gallopin losing 36 minutes will do that to you)).

Much quieter in terms of change here, but the significant change is that Josedin has moved up two places, meaning that the five teams with Carapaz are now an unbroken group at the top of the table.   BikeRacer333 manages the Zubeldian feat of being the biggest riser (4 places) while getting a nett day score of 0 and an anonymous joint 15th in the daily scores.

Non finishers

When we pick a rider we probably at least hope that they will finish the race.  At least that way we get 15 points for them.  How many riders does each team have already enjoying more than one rest day?

4: Carlo_Algatrensig, Kazistuta
3: GodChild, Otoxiep87, Triley36
2:  BluesInTheBottle, ChrisDK, Comodoro, Flo, Googolplex, Laarsland, Mellow_Velo, Minessa, PremierAndrew, Scrool07, Tigerion, Tobydawq, TotalPackage, Will10, Yellow_Knight

0:  ArchieBoy, BicycleBoy, LightBing, Nathanptz, Rote_Laterne, SafeBet, Squire, Torcia86, Vladimir

The contenders
Reminder of the top ten:
1   ArchieBoy   1853
2   Torcia86   1850
3   Scrool07   1791
4   Tobydawq   1716
5   Josedin   1522
6   Del1962   1506
7   Fauniera   1482
8   Rote_Laterne   1438
9   LosBrolin   1423
10   Shalgo   1419

The top five teams are the five who have Carapaz (and obviously share Nibali as a pick as well), and if the Ecuadorian stays in pink, the should remain the top five.
There are only 3 points between Archieboy and Torcia, and they have three other riders in common: Landa, O'Connor and Senni.   So it is essentially Masnada, Sivakov and Cimolai (for Archie) against Formolo, Zakarin and Ventoso for Torcia.
60 odd points does not look an enormous margin for Scrool07 to retrieve, but he also has both O'Connor and Landa, and with Ewan and Modolo out, and limited opportunities for Cimolai (who ArchieBoy has anyway), it would take a result from Narvaez that he has not indicated as likely yet to bring him any improvement.  The possibility of success through other riders dropping remains for him.
Tobydawq also has Landa (it is the lack of dorsal number 1 that leaves Josedin so far behind the other Carapazinos) but needs Kangert and De La Parte to start improving rapidly if he is to make up the deficit on the top three.

Even if Roglic were to climb back to the race lead, leaving Carapaz second, that of itself would not be enough to put the teams based on the Slovenian back at the top, especially if, as seems the most likely place for that to happen, that occurs on the final TT after 5 more days of 18 point bonuses.  And of course Nibali overtaking either or both of them would not have much nett effect on our scores.  There are higher  scoring permutations than those based on Roglic, as found by Del1962 (with Majka, Landa, Ewan and Zakarin) and Fauniera (Landa, Ewan, Zakarin, Ciccone and Sivakov).

But the last week will be horrible for at least one rider out there, and someone will do better than expected.  And the same should happen in the game.

Standings

Masnada and Ventoso meant that the top two were both represented in the break, but only Masnada stayed in front of the GC riders, and so Archieboy extends his lead.  Vladimir's decent returns are more rewarded in this classification, with him getting a 10 place jump to 12th.  The only mover higher than that is Fauniera becoming the leading non-Carapazino challenger.

Standings

The top two got exactly the same score, albeit in different ways, so the margin is still 60 points.  Tobydawq closes most of the gap to Scrool, so 4th place getting closer to third echoes what happened in the race.  SafeBet and Laarsland are the Formolos of the day, moving into the top ten, but while SafeBet was only just outside the ten, Laarsland has made a 7 place jump to get there.

A sprint stage, presumably, tomorrow, so little change expected (Demare and Ackermann are not selected).  But Cimolai, one of few real sprinters still in the race, has form in these games: in the 2017 Tour de France game his 7th place on the Champs Elysees brought about a change in the winner of the game: he is on two of the top 4 teams.

Stage 18  Not quite a sprint stage

Very little doing here, with the break survivor and the main sprinters unpicked, and no change above 22nd in GC, and none in the mountains.  There are some stage points, and some losses in the points category to record.

Always nice when a unique pick pays off...

Purplish points

DJSprtsch builds on yesterday's movement to get into the top ten, JSG is up 10 places to 13th, and the appearance of Godchild and Search in the day's extended top ten means that every team now has at least a fraction of a point.

1   Scrool07   281
2   Torcia86   213.25

Standings
The top two get the same score as each other, so the gap stays the same, while the small gap between Scrool and Tobydawq for the last podium spot becomes even tighter.  Total Package appears in the top ten, and is the highest mover: Mellow Velo, BikeRacer33, Karaev and Kazistuta all share the laurels of fastest riser with 6 place moves.

Stage 20  Almost done.

Landa's (temporary?) move from 3rd to 4th makes more difference than his being pipped to the stage win.

LANDA MEANA Mikel   92   32
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   87   1
CICCONE Giulio   31   3
ZAKARIN Ilnur   23   19

JUNGELS Bob   -12   4
DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor   -14   2
FORMOLO Davide   -39   6
ROGLIC Primoz   -51   11

Like Bilbao, and because of Bilbao, Koronin gets her second daily win.

1   Koronin   207 (Landa, Bilbao, Dombrowski and Nibali) (70 purplish points)
2   Fauniera   173 (Landa, Ciccone, Zakarin, Kangert, Nibali) (40)

Purplish points

Flo moves up to the podium, and Fauniera also takes a step forward, and Koronin jumps 12 places to enter the top ten.
Only one team can possibly catch Scrool, but I can't see any likely outcome tomorrow that will make Torcia the top scorer.

1   Scrool07   281
2   Torcia86   213.25
3   Flo   204.5
4   Fauniera   202.85

8   TotalPackage   135.4
9   Tobydawq   134.5
10   DJSprtsch   133.57

Standings

Zakarin's gains might have brought Torcia close to leader Archie if they were not more than cancelled out by Formolo's losses: Formolo is also the main reason that Tobydawq has dropped away from Scrool's score in the battle for the podium.

Fauniera moves into the top five, and Googolplex into the ten, while Flo and Salvarani have 9 place jumps further down the table.

Stage 21  All done, with a rather uneventful ITT

As expected, Roglic and Landa swap places.  In the absence of Haga from all our teams, that is the main effect of the stage.  There is never a Pink Jersey bonus on the last stage.

Final standings

No change on the podium, who all scored identically today, while Josedin's omission of Landa gets him back to 5th, meaning the 5 Carapaz teams fill the final top five places.  SafeBet gets back into the top ten, which now has exactly the same order as it had after stage 19, before Landa's brief stand on the virtual podium.  Mellow Velo and Bike Racer33, who have 5 riders in common and have moved in almost perfect step with each other throughout the race, share the final jump of the day mention with a 6 place move.

Congratulations to ArchieBoy for his win(as with the Spring Classics game, the winner is a newcomer to these games), to Torcia and Scrool for filling the podium, and to Tobydawq and Josedin for also identifying Carapaz as the way to go.  So, were you really tipping him to win, or just thinking he was one of the cheaper picks who had a decent top 5 or so chance?

Thanks to all who had a go, to the riders we invested our points in, to CQ for the scores and PCS whose result service I used.

I'll work out some rider numbers tomorrow.

SIVAKOV Pavel   157

Torcia had five riders in common with Archie, so the win essentially boiled down to the difference between
MASNADA Fausto   231
SIVAKOV Pavel   157
CIMOLAI Davide   61
and
ZAKARIN Ilnur   212
FORMOLO Davide   147
VENTOSO ALBERDI Francisco Jose   15

Without wishing to put people off the Tour and Vuelta games, Tobydawq's near-podium here after his dominant performance in the Spring Classics game means that he is 1400 points clear in the 4 seasons challenge.

All these numbers, and more, are in the spreadsheet (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0nzodvwn7df2zit/Giro%202019%20CQ%20game.xlsx?dl=0).

Tour starts on 6th July, scores will be based on up to 30 June, as in the download released on 1st July: I'll probably put up an initial post around about 28th June.

Just the three end of May updates to do for the Emerging Riders games this week, and I can look forward to more than a few CQ-free days for the first time since before the Omloop.

Thanks for the game and congratulations to ArchieBoy. Risky pick Carapaz as Landa was supposed to be the leader was worth it.
