Title: 2019 TdF CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on June 26, 2019, 21:16
We are in that strange fortnight that have National Championships and almost nothing else, and a few teams have named their teams, so it must be time to get my spreadsheet dusted off.

Your Team
8 riders, who must all be on the final start list for the Tour, with a maximum total cost of 4000 CQ points.

Rider cost
Their CQ points (https://cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/start.asp) for the year to 30th June, as compiled in the download that was made available on the CQ site on Monday 1st.   Their prices, and team selections updated as often as I can, are in a spreadsheet available on Dropbox. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/gov2bg7374fnx7v/tour%202019%20team%20selector.xls?dl=0)

Scoring
Points are won by the top ten on the stage each day (80, 50, 35 down to 1 point for 10th), holding the yellow jersey (20 points a day, but not on the last day) and for the GC (600 for the winner, then 450, 380, 320, 290, down to 160 for 10th, 72 for 20th, 21 for 50th, and 20 for every finisher) and also for the Points and KoM classifications (same scale as the stage points).  I will apply the standings every day, so your projected points can change quite rapidly.

There is a subsidiary ranking, with points given to teams (on the same 80, 50, 35... scale) each day according to their points gained on the stage.

(For the team time trial, points are divided by 4 and rounded down, and only given to riders who finish in their team's main group, so 20, 12, 8, down to 1 for 7th, and only the top 7 teams)

Entering the game
By PM to me at Velorooms or Cycling News (you can't send a PM at Cycling News if you are a new member, and I'm not sure that I would trust CN on the day of its switchover to a new format on Wednesday) anytime up to the start of the race which is, I believe, noon in Brussels on Saturday 6th July.

Please give riders' names in CQ format (surname, then forename, particular care needed with Spanish, South American, Portuguese and Danish riders); if you use the dropbox spreadsheet with prices, the names are already in the right format.

Please do not add info like team and points in submitting your team: I'll only have to delete those bits, so it is a waste of time for both of us.

If there are any rules that I have forgotten to include here, then precedent applies.

All the teams are now in, and on both the Dropbox spreadsheet and Search's list:  what's keeping you?

Among those teams, 42 of the 176 riders in the Tour are named, one of them 9 times and 3 others appear in at least half the teams.

A bit less than 2 1/2 days to go

No, Velogames TDF?!?  Anyone considering the TDF/Velon offering?
https://fantasy.letour.fr  I forgot to read the directions which I think were in the Release form.
But you can make a League for Velorooms.

The official TdF site legally threatened Velogames out of running its game this time last year too: I recall there were efforts to boycott their game in retaliation.

They haven't tracked me down yet, though:

The popularity rankings very from 36% to 87% of the max possible.

29 of the 59 selected riders are unique picks; one team (but not the bottom of the popularity table) has 4 of them, while 6 have none.

8 different riders costing 1000 pts + have been chosen.

You even had 24 points unspent: keep trying more permutations until 12:00 (CET) to use them up if you want to.

The teams

38 of them in the end: two of the later entries had overbudget/non-competing rider issues, so I had to do some swapping-in for those managers.  And one team had its cheapestt rdier removed to make the standard eight.

As usual, teams listed with their riders sorted by price, and unique picks marked with an asterisk.

Rider picks

71 riders picked, 105 neglected (including Teunissen)

32 of the 71 are unique picks (I hope the previous post has 32 asterisks on it)

Stage 1 From one spelling of Brussels to another.

So, to remind you, these scores are a mixture of stage points, and projected points for the GC and the sprints and mountains classifications.   I'm only showing those who have been selected.  Sagan's score is made up of 50 stage points for coming second (which cannot be lost, even if he doesn't reach Paris), 450 points for being second in the GC, and 50 for his current second place in the sprints category.  Had anyone picked Teunissen, you would also see 20 points for being race leader.  Every rider has at least 20 points, as that is the reward for finishing.  Given that there were no DNFs today, every team must have at least 160 points: those who have noone in the GC top 50 have that score.

SAGAN Peter   550   2
EWAN Caleb   420   16
COLBRELLI Sonny   340   2

The team time trial tomorrow will shake this about a bit, and will force me to explain the negative points that will occur and the green points.

I won't put up the link to Dropbox every day, but the spreadsheet will be in the same place (https://www.dropbox.com/s/5u4beazaxu4pcdi/tdf%202019%20cq%20game.xlsx?dl=0) regardless.

Stage 2 Team Time Trial

(I had to re-jig the spreadsheet: suddenly realised why I had columns for the early stages before the totals columns, which I had previously "corrected", thinking it was a rationalisation.)

Stage points today were relatively unimportant, no rider got more than 20 of them (although Teunissen gets another 20 for the yellow jersey).  Far more significant were the changes in projected position: Van Aert was 16th yesterday, with 94 points projected for that position, now he is 2nd, and if he stays there, will have 450 GC placing points.  So he is the biggest improvement of the day.
However, none of us expect Van Aert to hang on to that podium spot, so he will at some time get negative points: that has already happened for some, most obviously Peter Sagan.  He has dropped from 2nd to 48th, so his projected GC points are now 23, not 450.

I won't list every rider's point fluctuations every day: I'll choose a cut off depending on how dramatic the stage has been, and I will only show those who have been selected by at least one of our managers.

VAN AERT Wout   382   for Archieboy
KRUIJSWIJK Steven   380   for 5 teams
MARTIN Tony   320   for Otoxiep87
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   222   28 teams
THOMAS Geraint   192   for Ripley

Daily Scores
Anyone who had a decent day yesterday courtesy of Ewan or Sagan saw most of those points evaporate today, even if many of us had that mitigated somewhat by the rise of a member of one of the higher placed teams (most commonly Bernal).  That still left a lot of us in negative territory.

Very close for the honours on the day:

1   Laarsland   626 (Kruijswijk, Bernal and Zabel, but Debusschere and Garcia lost points) (80 Green points)
2   Search   624 (Kruijswijk, Bernal and Geschke) (50)
3   ArchieBoy   620 (Van Aert, Bernal and Van Garderen, but Boasson Hagen) (35)
4   Carlo_Algatrensig   434  (25)

Green points
You'll have noticed that the top ten each day have a bracketed number, these are their points towards our minor classification, the green points jersey.  These get totalled every day.  No-one who scored yesterday in this was in today's top ten (the Sagan/Colbrelli/Ewan correction factor), so when the scores for the two days are totalled, we have a lot of drawn placings.

19   BikeRacer33, Fauniera   1
The rest have yet to score.

Standings
At least no-one's score is totally dependent on 20 per rider for being outside the top 50 any more.  Don't expect these to be much more of a prediction of the final outcome than the current GC rankings are.
There again, Archie won the Giro game, and there he is again, on the back of a 20 place jump.  Even that is outdone by Carlo and Search (24 and 28 places respectively)

I am out tomorrow evening: the update will be late.

PS  I see there has been a late adjustment on the results, with Sunweb now being given 4th and Katusha 5th.  It only makes a difference of 3 pts give or take for 9 riders, three of whom aren't selected and none of whom are very popular.  I will hope that any differences it would have made to the Daily points would not be relevant to the final Green Jersey classification, rather than re-calculate everything.  Similarly, I note that Julien Simon was 16th in the results table I used for the stage one calculations, but now he is shown as 29th in yesterday's results: that correction was incorporated in his drop of points today.  These things will hopefully all be resolved by Paris.

However, given how close the top of the daily table was, it turns out that the three extra points given to Rick Zabel were quite significant.  Once those are taken away, Search pips Laarsland to the day's win (by just 1 point), and a 30 point switcharound in the Green points is significant.  Vladimir has 2 of the Sunweb riders (Kamna and Kelderman), and so catches up with Josedin, so they get 4 green points each.

New Green standings:
1 Search 80
2 Koronin, RattaKuningas 65

Stage 3 Champagne version of the Ardennes

Those who can't cope with a series of short sharp hills fall away, and those who can move up the GC to replace them.  We need to wait until stage 6 removes those who can't deal with longer climbs before the table takes on a really meaningful shape.

Tomorrow should see far less change in the GC, and the sprinters we have chosen, or left unchosen, will probably affect the green points more than the main event.

Now I'm just hoping that ASO don't nullify that 5 second gap between Bernal and Thomas and render all my numbers incorrect.

Thanks for the swift updates. Is there a chance you include the guaranteed points standing again as there's more fluctuation at the beginning of the tours?

Stage 4 One for the sprinters

Far fewer points changes, and the biggest ones, for 1st and 2nd on the day, don't affect our riders:

EWAN Caleb   38   16
SAGAN Peter   25   2
GROENEWEGEN Dylan   15   1
KREUZIGER Roman   8   7
GAUDU David   6   1
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc   5   6
PORTE Richie   5   22

QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   -7   9
COLBRELLI Sonny   -10   2

REICHENBACH Sébastien   -27   2

1   TotalPackage   62 (Ewan, Groenewegen, Felline, Soler) (80 green points)
2   Shalgo   51 (Ewan, Kreuziger, Porte) (50)
3   Comodoro   48 (Ewan, Porte, Soler) (35)

Green points
Total Package already had a couple of points, so the day's win brings 2nd place.  Shalgo and Comodoro get the top ten with their forst points: 6 teams are still waiting for theirs.  At this stage it is odd to score, and yet drop in the table, but Ratta Kuningas manages it.

Guaranteed points
I had envisaged the Green points replacing this as the secondary classification, and once the GC rankings take on something resembling its final shape, this should become fairly redundant, but I have been asked for it on both sites:
1   LightBing   138
2   Otoxiep87, RattaKuningas   110
4   TotalPackage   108
5   Googolplex   105

Standings

Small scores mean fewer changes in the rankings: the top 4 are unchanged, Ratta Kuningas and Otoxiep make minor steps forward among the top ten, Googolplex shows up in the top 10, and Total Package gets a 7 position leap forward, the best of the day, even if undramatic compared to the last couple of days.

Stage 5 Hilly ride through Alsace, main sprinters dropped

Sagan got a substantial (but probably very temporary) rise through the GC positions today, which was worth more points than the stage win.  Few other substantial changes, as those who dropped away today were, for the most part, already outside the top 50 anyway.

SAGAN Peter   178pts   2 teams
TRENTIN Matteo   56   1
VAN AERT Wout   50   1
MATTHEWS Michael   20   1
COLBRELLI Sonny   19   2

URAN URAN Rigoberto   -10   14
VAN GARDEREN Tejay   -10   3
GAUDU David   -12   1
KELDERMAN Wilco   -15   3

1   Googolplex   179 (Sagan and Felline (1)) (80 Green pts)
2   BicycleBoy   168 (Sagan but Uran) (50)

4   ArchieBoy   43 (Van Aert and Boasson Hagen but Van Garderen and Soler) (25)

Standings

Given the margin by which he was the biggest scorer of the day, it is no surprise that Sagan is behind the two most significant jumps in position: BicycleBoy and Googolplex getting onto the podium.  But not the biggest jump: BlackBandit has moved up 9.

Puncheurs have a huge influence on the scores at the moment: I suspect that will not be the case after tomorrow.

Almost selected Ciccone,  he was so so impressive at Giro.  How he made all those breaks and beat everyone to the top of those climbs when I’d never heard of him before.  Then again I don’t follow Italian riders on Italian Pro Conti squads!  I didn’t think he could replicate it a month later.

Also just because team average is 500/ per rider doesn’t mean I can have all the high 500 riders TVG, Porte & Ciccone

Trentin really letting me down.  Sits up stage 4 and doesn’t bike throw on 5.

Stage 6 Planche des Belles Filles, and then a bit

A few stage points, but mainly GC gains by passing puncheurs as they, for the most part, drop dramatically.

Huge changes, including ne sall of more than 30 places.  5 of the top ten weren't in that group yesterday, and those new entries to the top ten have an average jump of more than 12 places.  Del's is the biggest (19 place) move, but the most significant move is of our first-time player from PCM Daily, and new leader, Ripley, who has Geraint Thomas as a unique pick and therefore might, on today's evidence, take some shifting.

Stage 7 Slow motion chase of a half hearted break

Stage points, and a few Point classification changes dominate, only very minor GC projection changes.

GROENEWEGEN Dylan   83   1
EWAN Caleb   64   16
COLBRELLI Sonny   50   2
SAGAN Peter   35   2
CHEREL Mikael   4   1

TRENTIN Matteo   -5   1
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc   -6   6
VAN GARDEREN Tejay   -6   3
MATTHEWS Michael   -23   1

Points are so low that I have included all the selected riders who have gained or lost today.

On the day
1   TotalPackage   144 (Groenewegen, Ewan, Felline but Soler) (80)
2   Koronin   114 (Ewan and Colbrelli)

Green points

Guaranteed points

First and second on the day yields 130 guaranteed points, and brings TP from 7th to top.

1   TotalPackage   238
2   Googolplex   220
3   BicycleBoy   219

10   Rote_Laterne   140

Standings

Peter Sagan's third place is enough to bring Bicycle Boy into the lead, while those in 3rd and 4th close the gap to the leaders.  Otoxiep, Rote Laterne, Amis Velo and DJSprtsch are new entries in the top ten, with jumps of 6 to 9 places, but Total Package has gone up by 11: more volatility than I would have expected on such a neutral stage, and testament to how closely bunched most of us still are.

Stage 8 Hilly transfer to St Etienne

Apart from stage and KoM rankings, there were quite a few points for moving up as Teuns and Woods slipped down.

DE GENDT Thomas   125 points for Koronin
MATTHEWS Michael   63 folr LightBing
URAN URAN Rigoberto   40   14 teams
BUCHMANN Emanuel   30 for Josedin
KRUIJSWIJK Steven   30   5
TRENTIN Matteo   27   1
SAGAN Peter   26   2
MAS NICOLAU Enric   20   8
YATES Adam   20   4
...
EWAN Caleb   -10   16
VAN AERT Wout   -10   1
COLBRELLI Sonny   -15   2
CHEREL Mikael   -16   1
VAN GARDEREN Tejay   -37   3

Three teams become the first to register a non-finisher (TJVG): they lose the 37 GC points he was in line for by virtue of the 36th place spot he held on GC, but retain the 2 points he got on stage 2.

On the day

Koronin not only had De Gendt as a unique pick, she also had De Marchi in back-up

1   Koronin   129 (De Gendt and Mas, but Ewan and Colbrelli) (80 green points)
2   Squire   112 (Uran and Mas, and 4 others with some gains today)  (50)
3   Yellow_Knight   96  (Uran and Mas, and 3 others with some gains today) (35)

Standings

You have to look down to 7th place before you will find any team that has made progress, and there Del, immediately followed by Fauniera, sit as new teams in the top ten.  Yellow Knight and Squire match Del's 6 place rise, but Koronin outdoes them, jumping 10 spots.

Stage 9 Unchased breakaway through the Massif Central

A few of us had those who gained points in the break, a few of us had riders overtaken by those who were in the break, one of us had an unfortunate non-finisher, and a lot of us had nothing at all.

ROCHE Nicolas   35   DJSprtsch, JSG and LightBing
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc   33   6 teams
GARCIA CORTINA Ivan   3   Laarsland
...
DE PLUS Laurens   -1   3

7   Comodoro, TotalPackage   26 (4 each)

Green points

Ratta (is that a forename?) moves onto the podium, but JSG, coming from way down the table, nearly prevented him from doing so.

1   Koronin   220
2   TotalPackage   166
3   RattaKuningas   131

Guaranteed points

The top 6 here have points from expensive sprinters/puncheurs (Sagan, Groenewegen, Colbrelli, Matthews), so although they have a good margin over the rest of the field here, they are missing out on GC points, and have an average position of about 19th in the main ranking.

1   Koronin   278
2   TotalPackage   243
3   Googolplex   237
4   BicycleBoy   236

7   Otoxiep87   162
8   Scrool07   150
9   Comodoro   148
10   DJSprtsch   146

Standings

The exception to the low ranking of the teams with high guaranteed scores is found at the top of the table.  Bicycle Boy retains his place, as do the rest of yesterday's top six.  On a day of low scores, DJSprtsch and Just Some Guy make Roche-powered jumps of 6 and 7 places respectively into the top ten.

Stage 10 Echelons

Stage points were fairly insignificant in the game compared with the issue of which group a rider was in.

THOMAS Geraint   160   for Ripley
BUCHMANN Emanuel   130   for Josedin
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   120   28 teams
MAS NICOLAU Enric   120   8

Huge, and largely unexpected, scores for most.

Ripley and Josedin are new in the top ten, Josedin with a 22 place jump.  Everyone above them stays in the same position. By getting the 10th place on the day, Bminchow has ensured that everyone is at least off the mark in this classification.

Guaranteed points

LightBing and RattaKuningas moved up a bit today, but today is almost the epitome of why I have tried to move focus away from this towards the daily fluctuations.

Rest day 1 was yesterday, but I promised some numbers, so I'll do some quickly...

Guaranteed points

There are 23 riders who have won the points that come from 3rd on a stage or higher
ALAPHILIPPE Julian   254 pts (incl 120 yellow jersey points)   0 team
SAGAN Peter   235   for Bicycle Boy and Googolplex
EWAN Caleb   155   16 teams
VAN AERT Wout   152   Archieboy
TEUNISSEN Mike   150   (40 yellow pts)   0
VIVIANI Elia   150   0

MATTHEWS Michael   125   LightBing*
GROENEWEGEN Dylan   95   Total Package*
CICCONE Giulio   90 (40 yellow pts)   0
DE GENDT Thomas   80   Koronin*
IMPEY Daryl   80   0
TEUNS Dylan   80   0

COLBRELLI Sonny   75   Koronin* and RattaKunungas*
PINOT Thibaut   66   0

TRENTIN Matteo   63   1 BlackBandit222
STUYVEN Jasper   59   0
KRISTOFF Alexander   51   0
BENOOT Tiesj   50   0
VAN AVERMAET Greg   45   0
MEURISSE Xandro   43   0

THOMAS Geraint   38   Ripley
NIZZOLO Giacomo   35   0
TRATNIK Jan   35   0

So basically only one remotely popular pick is showing with any consistency here, Caleb Ewan.  I have asterisked those who have a rare pick in this list if they also have Ewan.

The full rankings

If I were to rank each team's guaranteed points each day, and then apply the daily position points, we would have a lot of ties, and therefore a lot of decimals, and a table like this:

2   Koronin   231.86

This is rather experimental, and might never be seen again: it is the last tab in the spreadsheet "Guaranteed Green".

Green points
Because this is based on the nett daily change of each team, it is meaningless to give rider scores.  Discussion at CN suggests that there is a preference for returning to the guaranteed points.  I will keep this going for this edition (it might be eventually considered an oddity like the 1906-12 tours decided by points rather than accumulated time), but we will have some kind of !vote after the tour, before the Vuelta to see what people prefer.
But, in the tradition of Mastermind, I have started so I'll finish, and in stage 10 we finally got every team onto the scoreboard.

Only 4 teams have suffered a DNF so far, three with Van Garderen and one with De Marchi.

To a large extent, it has been expensive riders getting big points: there are no very effective barcgains.  The only riders (with >20 points) who are on course for a return of more than 25% are
ALAPHILIPPE Julian

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
KRUIJSWIJK Steven

10   Googolplex   946 (Bernal, Sagan, Barguil, Henao, Zabel)

Despite his humble position in the table, Comodoro merits a mention for having all 8 of his riders doing more than the 20 point minimum.

Stage 11 A fairly uneventful sprint stage.

Very little happening in GC apart from many people overtaking Ciccone, slight movement in the sprints classification, Soler sitting up, and the Zabel teams suffering the loss of a team member.

Standings

More change today than I would have expected, but the field is fairly evenly split between have-Ewans and have-nots.  Otoxiep and Amis Velo rise from 3rd and 5th to take the lower steps on the virtual podium behind Ripley.  Shalgo is the top of three new teams in the top ten, with Los Brolin and Rote Laterne just making it.  Armchair Cyclist and Scrool both also make progress near the top, but the jump of the day is split 3 ways, with DJSprtsch and Koronin matching Shalgo's 8 place leap.

Standings

Ripley already had a decent lead, and then he got the best player on the day as a unique pick.  Surely the lead would only get bigger, I thought.

But no: Otoxiep87 had a very modest score today, but Ripley's triple whammy of Bernal, Barguil and Kreuziger allowed him to take the lead.  Scrool is up from 6th to 3rd, and is followed by RattaKunungas, the highest placed of 4 new entries to the top ten (well done also to Kazistuta, Koronin and Carlo).  But it is Squire who gets the shout out for the fastest climbing of the day, up by 14 places.

Maybe he has been dislodged today, but insofar as Thomas looks even more likely to prevail eventually, and he must be expected to start garnering 20 point daily bonuses before long, perhaps the balance has indeed swung in Ripley's direction.

Or maybe not...

Just as in the race itself, the leader has a fair margin, but there is a bunch of hopefuls closely bunched behind, waiting for weakness.  No very big moves (6 teams share the jump of the day award by moving 3 places), but Ratta gets into second, and Total Package and Amis Velo move into the top ten.

I had intended doing a "Who has lost riders" as part of the rest day update but forgot: by doing it today, I also get to muster sympathy for the three Kelderman teams

Only ArchieBoy has had the misfortune to lose 2 men: Van Aert and Van Garderen (cost 1632, gained 154)
BikeRacer33 and BlackBandit222 also lost Van Garderen (cost 567, gained 2)
Koronin suffered almost as much: De Marchi cost 562, no points
Carlo_Algatrensig, Triley36 and Vladimir are scarcely better off, with Kelderman (510, 6)
Escaping fairly lightly, so far, are the seven Zabel teams (Armchair Cyclist, Googolplex, Josedin, Laarsland, Mellow Velo, Tigerion, Total Package) who spent more modestly (104), and got a consolatory 3 points.

Stage 17 The Gap stage

Not much game interest in the break: one of the top ten was a unique pick, but at least that was the winner.  Other than BlackBandit's unique pick, there were a few GC gains, and rather more losses, in the lower GC positions on account of 20 minute gifts.

I am in the fortunate position of being able to wait and see what call CQ makes in terms of allocating points for today.

Let's hope we know before Sunday afternoon.

Stage 19  Thunder, hail, floods, and quite possibly pestilence after l'Iseran

Although ASO have decided that they are not giving a stage result, CQ have published, and allocated points on the basis of, a finishing order.  For some reason, while any other site I have seen have Uran 9th and Landa 10th, CQ have done it the other way around.  This is a CQ game, so 2 points for Landa, 1 for Uran.
The 20 point yellow jersey bonus comes into play in the game for the first time this edition.

CQ has switched Landa and Uran around, giving very slight changes in the green points and in the scores.

Revised top ten after stage 19:
1   AmisVelo   1776
2   LosBrolin   1775
3   Rote_Laterne   1774
4   Ripley   1762
5   Armchair_Cyclist   1757
6   Shalgo   1742
7   Search   1737
8   Fauniera   1671
8   DJSprtsch   1671
10   Del1962   1669

The biggest gains from Alaphillippe's drop will be for Thomas, and therefore for Ripley, but I need to do other things before I do all today's number crunching.

Title: Re: 2019 TdF CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on July 28, 2019, 13:51
So, while we wait for the evening race today, we should try to build some sort of consensus about secondary competitions.

When (I think) CQ Manager started the GT games, the only scores given until the very end of the race were the guaranteed points, and I started chipping in with where we would be in the standings "if the race were to finish now", which obviously becomes more accurate as the race nears its conclusion (although situations like Alaphilippe in yellow keep us guessing in that regard).

When I took over the games, I retained the guaranteed points category as a secondary competition.  But this year I replaced that with a 'green jersey' ranking based on daily position in points gained or lost towards the main game.  This seemed well enough received during the Giro, but people have said during the Tour that they preferred the old system.

There's no point in me spending time on elements that people aren't enjoying, so let's find out what you are interested in.  So it would be good if as many of you as would could answer the following, and add any other thoughts, about how we do this in future GTs.  Answer in thread or PM to me: I'll wait until Wednesday before collating the responses.

Are you interested in there being a secondary competition?

Should it be based on the stage scores, or the effect of the stage on projected scores?
(On stage 20, would you give Geraint Thomas just 15 pts for 5th, or 15 + 70 for moving from 3rd to 2nd on GC)

Should it be scored according to simply points won by each rider, or the position of each manager on the day?

If we are only awarding points for the stage, should that include leader's points (the 20 point bonus to yellow jersey wearer)?

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

First of all thanks as per usual AC for running the game. :cool

Are you interested in there being a secondary competition?

Not massively tbh[1]. I think I've voiced similar thoughts about the Green Jersey competition in the main CQ game and it's not where the prestige lies, for me anyway.

Of course even without a secondary competition, you still need to decide on which method to use to calculate the winner of each stage and for this I would go for the on the day stage scores option with no leader's jersey points.

 1. I might think differently if I was leading it!

Final Standings

The red lantern becomes the yellow jersey, as yesterday's top two, lacking Ewan in their teams, drop away from the podium, and so the top 4 all move up 4 places.  Three teams managed a final upward adjustment of three places: Scrool07, Ratta Kuningas and Total Package.

The difference between winning and coming second (they had 5 riders in common) was Barguil overhauling Porte for 10th in GC.

Phew, that's a surprise, I was aiming for a top 10 under the condition Bernal comes out on top. Thanks again Armchair cyclist for running the game and providing the spread sheet, search for the startlist and all participants.

As for further editions of the game I do enjoy the secondary competition with guaranteed points (including the  #yellow points), but as I see it, if you prefer the "new" secondary competition I think it's only fair to have it your way. I guess most won't have a strong opinion for either option.

Percentage returns
Popular makeweight William Bonnet broke positive (although the main image of him in the race, persuading Pinot to call it a day, was rather negative).  35 riders paid back at least a quarter of the investment.

Impeccable picks
Bernal
Kruijswijk
Ewan
Barguil
Porte
De Gendt
Aru
Kreuziger
Kamna
Pauwels
Bonnet

Best possible team
As ever, there might be a better combination: please tell me if you find one.

BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
KRUIJSWIJK Steven   469
EWAN Caleb   465
BARGUIL Warren   198
ARU Fabio   110
KÄMNA Lennard   72
BONNET William   20
VAN MELSEN Kevin   20
for a total of 2196

Nobody got the Bernal/Kruijswijk/Ewan trifecta, while 11 of us got two of them.

Collective wisdom
The reported Collective wisdom team would have won, but as I explained in the post on day 1 going through the submissions data, that team was over budget, at 4202.  However, if I had removed the least popular of them to have made the cut, I could have put in Kamna losing just one popularity point, been way below the budget restriction, and still scored 1961, just below second place.
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
ARU Fabio   110
PORTE Richie   156
URAN URAN Rigoberto   274
EWAN Caleb   465
PAUWELS Serge   22
BONNET William   20
KÄMNA Lennard   72

The winning team
Well done Rote Laterne: this is how she did it.
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley   842
EWAN Caleb   465
URAN URAN Rigoberto   274
BARGUIL Warren   198
ARU Fabio   110
KÄMNA Lennard   72
PAUWELS Serge   22
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar   20

and the difference between winning and second, there being 5 riders shared with Los Brolin, is
BARGUIL Warren   198
PAUWELS Serge   22
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar   20
rather than
PORTE Richie   156
HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis   24
MONFORT Maxime   20

4 seasons
For those who entered the Classics and Giro games as well, are in the running for being thrashed by Tobydawq in the Four Seasons challenge if they also enter the Vuelta game.

As to the review of the secondary classifications, I note that many are not that bothered, but that the non-unanimous preference among those who are is for a stage points only, without leaders' bonuses, table.  I hope that will provide interest for those who drop out of main game contention.
