Title: 2019 Vuelta CQ game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on August 18, 2019, 01:24
It only occurred to me today that the race is a week away, so a little later than intended, but here we go:

Your team
You need to name 8 riders who will be on the startline for the Vuelta, and who have a total CQ value for the 12 months to 18th August (the Sunday before the start) of 3500 or less.  Those prices are as reported in the CQ download published on 19th August.
If you pick a rider who is not on the final startlist, or your team is overbudget, I will replace him (the non-entrant or the cheapest one who can be replaced and bring you back into budget) with the most expensive replacement that will keep you in budget (this is a change from previous versions, but it shouldn't happen anyway).

There is a spreadsheet available on Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/5o25zwxwe6jj64s/vuelta%202019%20team%20selector.xls?dl=0) that will help you get your 8 men within budget, and arrange it for submission.

Entering the game
Send your team to me by PM on either Velorooms or Cycling News forums.  If you do not have sufficient posts to your name at CN, then you will find no such restriction at Velorooms.
Please send your riders' names only (not the price, not their team, preferably not even a following space) in CQ format (Surname then forename, some care needed with Spanish/South American, Danish, Eritrean and Portuguese riders).  If you use the spreadsheet, that will be easy.
Entries must be sent in before the race starts, which I believe  is 18:56 local time on 24th August (Yeah: I thought it looked like an odd time too).  If you don't wait until the last moment, I will have a better chance of warning you if there is a problem with the team.  However, please do not send in your teams until the riders' prices are confirmed.

The game
Your riders will get points for stage positions (70 for the winner, down to 1 for 10th), for starting a stage in the red jersey (18 points) and for their standings in the points and mountains categories with points given on the same scale, and GC standing (ranging from 500 for the leader to 16 for 50th, and 15 for everyone else).  Those standings points can obviously increase or decrease, and gradually become a closer indication of what the final scores will be as the race goes on.
I will update daily, allowing you to become very optimistic until your top performers eventually drop away and/or withdraw from the race.

There is a secondary competition, which, after some discussion during the Tour, will be based on stage points only (not even red jersey bonuses).  I'll be referring to this as the green points competition.

Enjoy the game, and good luck to your team.

20 of 22 teams confirmed (still waiting on INEOS and Deceuning-QS), but still no download of the up to date prices on CQ website.   So think about your key picks, and be ready to adjust your minor riders when the prices are confirmed.

Apologies to those who have been looking at the dropbox spreadsheet: I had posted the scores 01/01/19 to 11/08/19, instead of 11/08/18 to 11/08/19. (I had copied from the Emerging Riders Game rather than going back to the original). I thought the prices were a bit low. My draft has been wiped out to start again, sorry if you are in the same situation.

However, even with that correction, these scores are a guide to rough price, pending the update for the year to 18/08 which I keep checking CQ for. In the meantime, prices are available at CQ or on Search's excellent table above.

At least we know this morning which DQT riders we should be considering: only Ineos still to confirm.

I have used Search's research and updated the dropbox file manually.  Ineos are still to confirm their team, but I am open for entries.

About 42 hours to go, and I have 16 teams so far:

Bminchow
Del1962
DJSprtsch
Googolplex
Hakkie
Jakob747
JustSomeGuy
Koronin
Leadbelly
Salvarani

Search
Shalgo
Triley36

All of the riders considered to have any chance of winning La Vuelta have been picked at least twice.  One manager retracted Carapaz as soon as there was the possibility of him being injured, one reacted soon after his withdrawal was announced, and one is still pondering how to build a team without him.

You still have 130 chances to select a unique pick, or maybe you will put all three of the riders already in at least three quarters of the teams into your squad.

CQ did finally post the update, and although they have dated it as the year to 18th August, they have deleted for KOCH and BERNAS the points from races that took place on 21 Aug 2018.  Those points therefore should be in the year to 18th August, and I will stick with the prices as posted above by Search, and that have been in the Dropbox team selector tool throughout.

However, in the case of GEBREIGZABHIER, although Search is quite right in saying that on 18th August the site reported his score as 189, the update this evening reports 204, and all the results would conform that.  189 would make sense on the basis of the score given in the 11 August update: my guess is that the good folks at CQ only picked up on his Eritrean national time trial championship win in April in the last week: that would account for the other 15 points.

GEBREIGZABHIER is on one team, but that manager had more than 15 points to spare in his budget, so the teams as they exist at the moment are not affected by this price rise.  His price will therefore be 204, and I have amended Search's list and the selection tool at Dropbox accordingly.

Just submitted my team, it's not exciting but includes the most likely winner and runner up. I will still cheer for guys not on my team though.

Thanks again AC for your time and search for your nice lists.

OK, so two teams that I have downloaded this morning have included Gebregzabhier at his "old" price (before CQ discovered the results of the Eritrean national TT results from June) and are therefore a few points over budget.

So do I:
A) apply the new prices, and replace their cheapest selection with a rider a few points cheaper ("The change in his price was announced in the thread, and the price lists changed, more than 24 hours before they submitted their teams"); or
B) allow them to run a few points over ("It was an inadvertent mistake, based on treating the information source they were given in good faith")

I know which way I am inclined to vote, but I get these sudden notions of democracy from time to time.

Two hours to decide the fate of your opponents!

JSG's always after bigger budgets in the the CQ games. ;)

Applying the rules sounds good to me.

The people (well, 4 of them between the two sites) have spoken: the teams with Gebreigzahier have their reprieve.

And if anyone else wants to get in a team with Gebreigzabhier at 189, or without him, you have about 4 hours.

*** (nine names submitted: I have omitted the cheapest, but if the manager wants to omit another and bring Latour in, I'll allow it up to tomorrow's)

Some observations:
Rote Laterne, hot from victory in the Tour game, is the only one to have gone with the big two of Lopez and Roglic.
Many teams have not bothered at all with a big name (or even a small name) sprinter, but Yellow Knight has both Bennett and Gaviria.
Googolplex seems to have his eyes on the initial lead, with hopes, I presume, for Tony Martin as the first red jersey.
Hakkie may have prioritised national pride over realistic chance in the game.

Riders

61 seems like a lower than usual number of the field to have represented, but that is probably because a few mid-price riders were very popular.

How many teams selected each rider

30 teams: CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban, LATOUR Pierre
26: ARU Fabio
20: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
12:GEOGHEGAN HART Tao, NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel
9: ROGLIC Primoz
8: BAUHAUS Phil, MEINTJES Louis, PADUN Mark
7: BARTA William, BENNETT Sam, MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc

The bolded riders make up the Collective Wisdom team.  Roglic would have put it way over budget, and taking two of the men on 8 teams would be very much under budget, so I have lifted Bennett from the group below to make a very plausible spend of 3486.

6: GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres
5: QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander, RODRIGUEZ GARAICOECHEA Oscar
4: ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin, GEBREIGZABHIER Amanuel Werkilul, MAJKA Rafal
3: BICO Nuno Miguel Alves Matos, KRUIJSWIJK Steven, O'CONNOR Ben, PARDILLA BELLON Sergio, URAN URAN Rigoberto
2: BOASSON HAGEN Edvald, DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor, FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar, GESINK Robert, HOFSTEDE Lennard, KELDERMAN Wilco, KNOX James, MARCZYNSKI Tomasz, MEZGEC Luka, POELS Wout, POGACAR Tadej, SAMITIER SAMITIER Sergio, VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro

Riders on just one team are noted above.

Stage 1  Team Time Trial

CQ haven't posted completely yet, but I believe their formula is 1/4 of the points, rounded down.
Astana 17 points for each man who finished in the group.
DQT 10
Sunweb 6
Ed First 3
Bora 2
CCC 1
Movistar 1

Green points

1   ArchieBoy   33 (One Astana, one DQT and 2 Ed Firsts)
2   Comodoro   23 (One Astana, one DQT and 2 Ed Firsts)
2   Laarsland   23 (One Astana, one Ed Firsts, one Bora and a Movistar)
4   Fauniera   21

34   Googolplex, Koronin   1
36   Bminchow   0
   Collective_Wisdom   19

Standings
The GC rankings at the moment are fairly irrelevant (although Lopez topping them might be noteworthy), but that's what gets added in at this stage to make the very early standings, along with the 18 points Lopez has for being Red Jersey wearer.
No sprint or climbing points included yet, they will begin to appear tomorrow.

   Collective_Wisdom   686

It'll be some time before this tells us much: all it does so far is to show which 20 managers are getting 535 points (and probably a few days' worth of 18 point bonuses to come) from MA Lopez.

One other bit of data that belonged pre-game, the Four Seasons Championship (Spring Classics + Giro + Tour + Vuelta)

There are 20 teams that have entered this, plus he three previous games, and so are in the running for that title.

But to be honest, there is only one team that is in the running to win it.
Scores after three of the four events:

1   Tobydawq   6751
2   AmisVelo   5632
3   Search   5295
4   Armchair_Cyclist   5222
5   Del1962   5194
6   Scrool07   5098
7   Laarsland   5014
8   LosBrolin   4747
9   Triley36   4720
10   Salvarani   4660
11   Leadbelly   4613
12   Rote_Laterne   4611
13   Josedin   4581
14   Mellow_Velo   4176
15   Bminchow   4167
16   Kazistuta   4163
17   Comodoro   4081
18   Vladimir   4024
19   BluesInTheBottle   3983
20   JustSomeGuy   3904

And all the data you could wish to check out is, as ever, in the Spreadsheet at Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/s/sjsxqin41pgepgj/Vuelta%202019%20CQ%20game.xlsx?dl=0), and will be updated at the same location each day.

Stage 2  Well that was unexpected

Green points
Today

1   Ripley   95 (Quintana, Uran, Aru)
2   DJSprtsch, Northerner, Salvarani, Vladimir   80 (Quintana and Aru)
6   AmisVelo, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, Del1962, Googolplex   35 (Roglic and Aru)

Overall
1   Ripley, Salvarani ,Vladimir   99
4   Northerner   98
5   DJSprtsch   86
6   BikeRacer33   46
7   Tobydawq, Triley36   45
9   Rote_Laterne   43
10   Del1962   42

Ripley rises 27 places, DJSprtsch 21, and Googolplex and Bminchow both 20.

Main Game

A reminder: because this is built on projected positions, riders can lose points.  It doesn't mean they aren't doing well, just not as well as yesterday: Lopez is still the 3rd highest scoring selected rider, even though it looks like a disaster today.  As is the case unless there are very few scorers, I only include those with the bigger shifts, and only those selected for the game.

QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   488 points   5 teams
URAN URAN Rigoberto   279   3
ROGLIC Primoz   250   9

JAKOBSEN Fabio   -150   1
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   -260   20

On the day
I'm not sure that I have noticed more than 1000 points on the day before: extraordinary
1   Ripley   1038 (Chaves and Latour, as well as the Quintana/Uran/Aru noted above, and none of the 36 riders in the red today)
2   DJSprtsch   716 (Quintana, Aru, Chaves, Latour, but some point losers too)

Standings
Only three of this top ten were in the top ten yesterday: Ripleys 4 figure day score earns a 28 place jump, although a twenty place rise for DJSprtsch also merits a mention.

Stage 3  The first sprint

If a sprinter dominates the stages that suit him in these games, then he can score as well in the game as anyone well into the GC top ten.  But that is no more guaranteed than any GC man making the upper reaches of that table, so expensive big-name picks can be a high risk strategy.  But for now, it looks like it might work for seven teams.

Green points
Today

1   Kazistuta   80 (Bennett and Bauhaus)
2   Armchair_Cyclist, BicycleBoy, DJSprtsch, JustSomeGuy, PremierAndrew, Yellow_Knight   70 (Bennett)
8   Shalgo   40 (Theuns)
9   Josedin   32 (Mezgec and Richeze)
10   Carlo_Algatrensig   25 (Mezgec)
11   Search   15 (Aberasturi
12   7 teams 10 (Bauhaus)
19   Hakkie   5 (Jakobsen)
20   The rest 0

Overall

Still a very volatile table, with the five new entries to the top ten rising at least 16 places: Kazistuta in 2nd has risen 18 spots, and Yellow Knight (and JSG immediately behind him) 20.

1   DJSprtsch   156

Standings
Bauhaus allows Salvarani to squash up onto the third step of the virtual podium.  DJSprtsch is the only one of yesterday's top ten to have Bennett, and moves up 2.  Armchair and Kazistuta are new in the top ten, but neither jumped as far as the 8 places of Premier Andrew.

Stage 4  A similar sort of sprint.

Green points

The disqualification of Walscheid gives a bit of a bonus to Gaviria and others
Today

1   Hakkie   70 (Jakobsen)
2   Yellow_Knight   65 (Bennett and Gaviria)
3   PremierAndrew   45 (Bennett and Boasson Hagen)
4   5 Bennett teams   40

14   Josedin   16 (Mezgac and Richeze)
15   Search   3 (Aberasturi)
16   The rest   0

Overall

The top 7 are the 7 Bennett teams (he provides 112 points here).  Yellow Knight, who surely had an eye on this category in choosing both Bennett and Gaviria, moves up 8 places to 2nd, But DJSprtsch is still the only one with two stage winners.  Hakkie jumped from last to 12th with his unique pick being the winner today.

Main Game
Slightly more GC change than yesterday, but not in the upper reaches, so not with many points changing.  But a hit for the Quintana teams in the points classification.
The three teams who were at the bottom of yesterday's table are the three teams who suffer the loss of Kruijswijk today.  They did not lose many points from his standing this morning, but surely would have entertained hopes of his giving a bit more return on investment.

Stage 5  First MTF  Javalambra Observatory

Green points

Today
Sometimes those odd selections that end up being inexplicable rare picks pay off
1   ArchieBoy   85 (Madrazo and Lopez)
2   Hakkie   40 (Bol)
3   Rote_Laterne   22 (Lopez and Roglic)

5   Northerner, Salvarani, Vladimir   19(Lopez, Quintana and Chaves)
8   13 teams with Lopez&Chavez)   16

Overall
The top 4 remain the same, but not having Lopez cuts DJS's lead.  I am the highest placed riser, Hakkkie builds on yesterday's good day with another 3 places to get into the ten, and Archie leaps 17 places to appear in the top ten.

Standings

The rapid drop of the previous leader means nearly everyone in the top ten moves up, to varying degrees, with Vladimir wearing the leader's jersey.  Premier Andrew, Rote Laterne and Leadbelly are new members of the top ten, with Rote Laterne making a 13 place advance.

The top three all combine Lopez and Quintana (1st and 3rd on GC).  The Lopez-Roglic (1st and 2nd) only makes 9th, which I guess shows that stage placings and minor picks are not to be sneezed at.

Stage 6 Breakaway to Ares del Maestrat

Green points

Some breakaways are full of riders who were seen as being good value picks, and fairly popular.  Today's wasn't.

On the day
1   Hakkie, Vladimir   15 (Gesink)
3   Yellow_Knight   7 (Poljanski)
4   Everyone else   0

Overall
The top ten includes all today's scorers, and therefore the only two to move up at all (the Gesink duo)

Red points
Not much action in the minor category today: here there was plenty, but for the most part unwelcome.  Some of today's losses will be temporary, others not, and the loss of Uran is fairly fatal to some managers' games.

Standings

The leader yesterday, and with one of the less disastrous performances today, Vladimir now has more than 200 points advantage.  The three teams behind him maintain their positions, then we have DJSprtsch, who also lost far fewer points today than most teams, and so jumps into the top ten, with the biggest move forwards (10 places).  Archie and Comodoro also make their way into the ten, but rather less dramatically.

Stage 7  A muro

Those who splashed out on the most expensive rider in the game will feel vindicated.

Green points

On the day

1   Koronin, Search   73 (Valverde and Aru)
3   Rote_Laterne   65 (Roglic and Lopez)
4   LosBrolin   50 (Roglic and Majka)
5   AmisVelo, BikeRacer33, Bminchow, Del1962, Googolplex (Roglic and Aru) Northerner, Salvarani, Vladimir (Lopez, Quintana and Aru)   43

Overall

The top three remain as they were, but Bicycle Boy moves up a couple of places behind them.  Vladimir, Salvarani and Northerner all move upwards, the last of these into the ten, but the big jumps lower down were Search (18 places) and Koronin (16), escaping last place.

Red points

For the highest placed GC men, this is largely a return to where they were at the end of stage 5.  No-one had picked either of today's DNFs.  Quintana takes the Green jersey, which causes additional shake up, to the detriment of the teams with Sam Bennett.

Stage 8 Big breakaway

Green points

On the day

Unique picks earn their managers a mention

1   Kazistuta   40 (Aranburu)
2   Koronin   1 (Henao)
3   Everyone else   0

Overall

Katusha is up from 3rd to 1st: Koronin remains 20th.

1   Kazistuta   235
2   DJSprtsch   218
3   Yellow_Knight   203

Red points

Not for the first time, the main riders lose a lot of points, almost certainly only for 24 hours

This time, Hakkie doesn't quite buck the trend and remain in the black.

Standings

For the most part, this was a compacting of the table rather than great change.  But two managers make that not entirely the case: Kazistuta is up 4 places to 5th, and DJSprtsch has a 12 place leap into the top ten, mainly by virtue of having neither Lopez nor Roglic.

Stage 9 Hailstorm in Andorra

Green points

Overall

DJSprtsch moves back to the top, and Vladimir has a 4 place jump to third, a rise matched by Salvarani just behind him.  Blues in the Bottle jumps 9 places into the top ten, but outside that group Josedin (10 places) and Googolplex (11), move up even faster.

A huge range of scores today, with the drop of the temporary interlopers allowing most of the big names to recoup their loses from yesterday, and more (but not the most popular of the big names), while the three most popular riders in the game, all in the mid-range for price, add to yesterday's losses.

I didn't expect this after stage 1. Still 10 stages to go until we know if risk paid off.

Stage 11 A break away from the breakaway

Green points

Whatever I wrote to introduce stage 6 probably applies here.

1   BicycleBoy   25 (Craddock)
2   Fauniera, Jakob747, LosBrolin, Tobydawq   7 (Gebreigzabhier)

Third day in a row that BB is top scorer in this classification, so extends his lead.  Los Brolin moves up 2 places to 11th, Jakob is of the bottom, Toby breaks the 4 way tie for 31st place, and Fauniera just stays put.

Red points

Not a lot, may as well show all those who changed their projected scores:
CRADDOCK Lawson   40   1
GEBREIGZABHIER Amanuel Werkilul   32   4
ROGLIC Primoz   18   9

Sorry for the overnight delay

Stage 14 Sprint from a very suddenly reduced bunch

Green points

Just three riders in the game who took stage points, but two of them were fairly popular.

On the day

1   Armchair_Cyclist, BicycleBoy, DJSprtsch, JustSomeGuy, Kazistuta, PremierAndrew, Yellow_Knight   70 (Bennett)
8   Josedin   40 (Richeze)
9   BluesInTheBottle, Del1962, Fauniera, Googolplex, Laarsland, Leadbelly, Vladimir   7 (Soler)
16   The rest   0

Overall:

The morning's top two have Bennett, but third didn't, so DJSprtsch ascends to the podium, and Josedin moves up 5 places just behind im.  Premier Andrew rises 11 places, and Armchair Cyclist 10, for both of them to join the top ten.
1   BicycleBoy   466
2   Kazistuta   384
3   DJSprtsch   372

5   Rote_Laterne   304
6   PremierAndrew   297
7   Shalgo   294
8   Armchair_Cyclist   293
9   Vladimir   287
10   Del1962   286

Red points

BENNETT Sam   75pts   7 teams

LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   -2   20
MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe   -2   7
ARANBURU DEBA Alexander   -3   1
LATOUR Pierre   -10   30

Latour is on 87% of teams, and his 11 minutes only cost us 10 points, so the limited changes are mainly about stage and red jersey points.

Title: Re: 2019 Vuelta CQ game
Post by: rote_laterne on September 13, 2019, 10:06
I'm baffled that my strategy for top ten worked after the TTT failure. But for victory a Roglic winning and Lopez second would be necessary.

I selected 6 teams, the first one and the last one (which ended up being submitted) had the Roglic and Lopez strategy that's why I thought more managers would risk investing top heavy.

In my other teams I had Kruijswijk or Uran as most expensive or second expensive rider so I wouldn't have been better off with these teams.

Stage 20  The revenge of youth

Green points

On the day
1   Josedin   77  (Pogacar and Higuita)
2   BluesInTheBottle   70 (Pogacar)
3   Koronin, Search   40 (Valverde)
5   LosBrolin   35 (Majka and Roglic)

17   Higuita teams   7
21   Quintana teams   3
26   JustSomeGuy   1 (Kelderman)

Overall
The top three are as they were, but Josedin has a 5 place jump, the only team in the top ten to move up.  Koronin matches the jump.
1   BicycleBoy   610
2   DJSprtsch   528
3   Kazistuta   486
4   Josedin   465

8   BikeRacer33   400

The top three all have Bennett, and I don't see any other riders in DJSprtsch's team who are going to accumulate 82 points in tomorrow's stage.  The minor prize looks to be BicycleBoy's.

Standings

Del1962 is back on the top, and Googolplex and Los Brolin both pass the Knox-affected BikeRacer.  Blues in the Bottle makes a late top ten appearance as the top non-Roglic team, and Josedin'd trust in you is rewarded with a leap of 8 places.

The only change in the top fifteen is the most important one there could be: Bennett did enough to give Bicycle Boy the final lift up to win the game. Del drops a place, but he and Rote Laterne are on the podium.  Premier Andrew made a 3 place move as his final throw of the dice.

Green point scorers (stage points only)

The reason GC guys normally win the points classification at the Vuelta (but not the Giro or the Tour) is that there are the same points available regardless of the profile of the stage.  That is true of course of CQ points as well, but the gradient of the points scale is much steeper on CQ, rewarding wins and seconds much more than lower places, so the outcome is quite different.

BENNETT Sam   302pts   7 teams
ROGLIC Primoz   261   9
POGACAR Tadej   228   2
