Title: 2020 Youth CQ Ranking Game
Post by: Flo on December 21, 2019, 10:03
Youth CQ Ranking Game 2020

Ciao fellow Veloroomies, welcome to the eighth annual Youth CQ Ranking Manager Game. This game allows you to showcase your knowledge of upcoming youngsters, and hopefully take a gamble on a couple of really young riders.
Originally this game was invented by mc_mountain, based on Hugo Koblet's CQ Ranking Manager Game.

Your task is to create a team with 12-15 riders at 1000 CQ points to get the best possible return.

1. How the game works

1.1. Duration
The season starts when the first race is held (Australian Road Cycling Championships 8 January 2020) and ends when the last major race (.1 or higher) is held. The winner will be crowned when the next update after the last major race (x.1) is out - submissions can be made to extend the season to include late season smaller races, should there be potential for them to affect the top placings. A victor can be declared earlier if there is no prospect of the leader being overhauled.

1.2. Updates
My aim is to have an update every 2 weeks. I would greatly appreciate some help from other participants. If you are interested in doing an update every now and then, let me know via PM!

2. On doping
Hopefully doping will have much less of an impact on this game, but the Main game rules will apply.

3.Submitting your team

3.1. How do I?
You pick between 12 and 15 riders whose combined value doesn’t exceed 1000 points and submit your team to me via PM (either on CN forum or on Velorooms forum). Please be sure to use the naming format as found on cqranking.com and only send me your riders' names, not their scores etc. Please also be wary of any spaces or other characters after your riders’ names. I will try to correct all mistakes but some could slip through.

Example of how to send in your team:
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
DE PLUS Laurens
MAMYKIN Matvey
etc...

3.2. Eligibility
Riders need to fit one of the following two main criteria
i) be a first year professional rider (of any age), be it at World Tour or Professional Continental team.
ii) be riding at Continental level or lower, born in 1995 or younger, without having previously ridden as a professional.

Important new rule:
In the past there was some discussion about the definition of a first year professional rider, especially due to the distinction between stagiaires and 'officially signed' riders. Formerly the rule was that traineeship/riding as a stagiaire didn't qualify as professional experience, no matter how many times a rider was a stagiaire. For contracts signed halfway through the season the rule was that any contract signed August or later wasn't considered professional experience. It was brought to my attention by Armchair Cyclist last year that perhaps it is a bit arbitrary to allow stagiaires that joined late July, but not allow riders that signed an official contract late July. On top of that, search unearthed information that states contracts signed after 1st of July are different from contracts signed before July.

For that reason, the new rule regarding criterion i) be a first year professional rider, is:
* Riders who have only raced at Pro level as trainees/stagiaires or signed their first Pro contract after July 1st of the previous year can be considered first -year professionals

If you are unsure about the eligibility of a rider, feel free to PM me.

In previous years, the rules included an “encouragement” to include riders from several age categories, this encouragement has been scrapped to avoid any confusion.

Deadline
You can submit your team as of right now. The deadline for submission is January 7th, at noon i.e. 12:00 CET(http://www.timebie.com/timelocal/centraleuropean.php) which means you'll still have some time after the main game submission deadline to get your team together for this game.
After this deadline, team submissions will no longer be accepted. I will then process all teams, which includes checking eligibility. If I encounter an issue with your team, e.g. you've included the same rider twice, you are over budget or a rider you selected is not eligible, I will contact you via PM and give you the opportunity to correct the mistake before January 8th 20:00 CET. If after this deadline, you haven't yet gotten back to me, or there is still an issue with your team, I will:
i) in case you are over the budget, remove a rider to bring you under the budget. This will be the cheapest available rider on your team whose removal will bring you to or under the budget;
ii) in case you selected too many riders, remove the cheapest available rider from your team;
iii) in case of ineligibility, remove the ineligible rider.

I would like to ask the participants to delay the big reveal of their teams until after the January 8th deadline.

Best of luck to all! :)

Important: please read paragraph 3.2 regarding eligibility to find information about a rule change.

Also important, but not important enough to warrant a larger font: as I wrote in the 2019 thread, I probably will be out of the country in the second half of 2020 and unable to do any updates. So I will collect all entries and do the updates for the first half of the year, but after that we'll have to figure something out.

Naturally Flo has no Kometa riders again, but I ride to the rescue with Marton Dina. :P

DAINESE Alberto

If you're playing to win, an essential pick. Youth game or main tbh.

CHAMPOUSSIN Clément

Not starting till April with the WT team. Showed enough as a stagiaire to see that he should turn a profit anyways.

VAHTRA Norman

A good signing for the team (I think he'll be a good leadout), but probably not for CQ this year.

DINA Marton

132 is a lot for a CT rider, but he should be their leader in all races.

EEKHOFF Nils

Forget the Worlds. Fast finish, powerful TT and not bad in the classics. Lots of potential sources of points. Like Dainese, essential for both teams really.

FIORELLI Filippo

Late developer in cycling terms. Showed in his short time at Nippo that there could be more improvements.

SCHELLING Ide

He was my last rider and I had ~50 points left.

KRIEGER Alexander

Have to see how he fits into the Alpecin food chain. Probably nearer the bottom than top, but could still get enough opportunities.

BAIS Davide

His brother looks good, but a bit more expensive. Should have more chances this year with others leaving the team.

CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander

Not convinced he'll score big this year, but he should be fun to watch.

PEAK Barnabas

No standout classics men at Mitchelton now = freedom for Barnabas

NONNEZ Théo

I remember him being bigged up somewhere. Can't remember where or how exactly...

VERMEERSCH Florian

Joining the main Lotto team in June. Had a crazy run of late season form in 2019.

RENARD Alexis

Probably out of his depth at WT this year. Might drop down to the devo team to get some results.

TORRES BARCELO Albert

Inteja represent! Bound to pick up something in the one of the SSSRs.

 -------------------------------------

Four double digit popular picks (Dainese, Champoussin, Eekhoof and Cepeda).

Four unique picks (Vahtra, Dina, Fiorelli and Bais).

Ah, something must have gone wrong while copying teams onto a separate tab as you made some changes and MADRAZO as well. I'll try to fix that tomorrow.

My team, as always a little bit different than the youngsters in the main game and the emerging riders game although I do not have a reasoning for every rider why he is in this particular game team and not in another.

LEKNESSUND Andreas   186
CHAMPOUSSIN Clément   170
MOLENAAR Alex   170
ALEOTTI Giovanni   122
BAIS Mattia   119
GROVES Kaden   106
BAGIOLI Andrea   83
ALBA BOLIVAR Juan Diego   20
FRIGO Marco   10
MACIEJUK Filip   6
ARENSMAN Thymen   0
BALMER Alexandre   0
PICCOLO Andrea   0
SIMMONS Quinn   0
TIBERI Antonio   0

3 unique picks with Molenaar, Frigo and Balmer. In general a pretty unpopular team I like nonetheless.

Team sent.

15 riders
-> 5 are zero pointers and for the other 10 I have spent a budget of 965 points.
-> 10 WT, 2 ProConti, 2 Conti, 1 amateur.
-> 3 elite, 12 u23.

*uk *uk *uk *it *it *no *no *es *es *au *ec *co *usa *nl *dk

Now is time to reveal the names with a brief analysis. Ordered by popularity:

- mainstream-

40 -> *usa SIMMONS Quinn (2001, 0 points). Trek WT.
As expected, almost everybody has THE guy. Missing him is not an Evenepoel-kind mistake, but close enough.

34 -> *co ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo (1999, 44 points). Emirates WT.
Very chosen, not strange as he was impressing in the u23 Giro and is quite cheap. He's coming out of injury and has almost 0 experience outside Colombia, but those climbing legs worth the shot.

29 -> *it DAINESE Alberto (1998, 201 points). Sunweb WT.
The most expensive guy of my team. And I think he's a key rider this year. He's a great sprinter and I believe he's going to be a 1st option for Sunweb since the start.

26 -> *it BAGIOLI Andrea (1999, 83 points). Deceuninck WT.
Classy rider, going pro with Quick Step. Easy choice.

- popular picks-

19 -> *no FOSS Tobias Svendsen (1997, 127 points). Jumbo WT.
The winner of the Avenir is always a good option, don't you think?

17 -> *no LEKNESSUND Andreas (1999, 186 points). Uno-x Pro.
Norwegian power! In my opinion, he was the strongest GC rider last season in the u23 field. Instead of going ahead to WT, he has decided to stay a year at ProConti level leading his UNO-X team in its debut season. I expect good results in the Europe Tour races.

17 -> *nl ARENSMAN Thymen (1999, 0 points). Seg CT -> Sunweb WT.
Unlucky last season, so is a zero pointer. Mandatory pick cause he already proved it in 2018.

15 -> *au GROVES Kaden (1998, 106 points). Mitchelton WT.
Another fast guy going to a WT team without a clear leader for the sprints. He's not as quick as Dainese and I'm not as hyped for him, but in the other hand he's good on hilly courses as well. So I believe is a good pick.

15 -> *es RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos (2001, 0 points). Ineos WT.
Maybe the next spanish great rider? I've been following the junior ranks and he was soooo dominating in the spanish scene, but not as good as expected abroad. Probably he's not ready yet and there are other juniors more prepared like italians Piccolo or Tiberi. But if Ineos believes in him stepping up right now, I must do it too.

13 -> *uk DONOVAN Mark (1999, 5 points). Sunweb WT.
Similar case to Arensman. Bad season last year, but going to WT and already showed his legs. Cheap. Go.

- rare picks -

6 -> *uk PIDCOCK Thomas (1999, 116 points). Trinity amateur.
Yes, I know. He's expensive and his road calendar probably stinks. But he's pretty good, isn't he?

4 -> *uk CULLAIGH Gabriel (1996, 50 points). Movistar WT.
He's been out of radar cause last season he wasn't u23 anymore. But his kinda like Dainese and Groves, a young and promising sprinter going to a team without a leader in that area. Just a little less young and promising.

2 -> *ec CEPEDA HERNANDEZ Jefferson Alveiro (1996, 47 points). Caja Rural Pro.
This is the best Cepeda. Period.

2 -> *es TORRES BARCELO Albert (1990, 0 points). Movistar WT.
Track specialist finally doing his pro debut on the road. He used to be fast, a decent sprinter. Maybe, with the lack of speed in the Movistar ranks, he can be the option and score in the lower races.

1 -> *dk CHARMIG Anthon (1998, 0 points). ColoQuick Ct.
I'm hyped about him? Hell YES. He was one of the hottest prospects in his junior years. Then he quitted. But after more than two years out of the cycling world, he decided to come back and since the beginning he collected good results in Denmark amateur races. So he's back at the continental level. I was hoping for an unique pick and this is good enough.
PD: How I reached at him? Cause he won the Taiwan KOM making Dyball and Ficara bit the dust.

Fun to read your write up. I too have Carlos but I don't expect anything from him in the next year or two. It seems to me that Ineos know it is way too early for him to step up and have just contracted him to call dibs. Seems he will focus on his studies and on getting stronger in training.

I forgot to post my team btw. And tbh, I've also forgotten why I've chosen most of those lads :P

CHAMPOUSSIN Clément (170pt, 15)
HERMANS Quinten (162pt, 6)
ZIMMERMANN Georg (120pt, 2)
RAVANELLI Simone (116pt, 3)
RAJOVIC Dusan (99pt, 3)
BASSETT Stephen (82pt, 1)
HAILU Biniam Girmay (55pt, 7)
ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo (44pt, 35)
KRIEGER Alexander (42pt, 5)
HÄNNINEN Jaakko (41pt, 10)
TOUPALIK Adam (34pt, 3)
VERMEERSCH Florian (16pt, 6)
PLOWRIGHT Jensen (11pt, 1)
MACIEJUK Filip (6pt, 3)
SIMMONS Quinn (0pt, 41)

About Plowright: I read an interview with Drapac about the closure of his team, and he mentioned something along the lines that he'd be super curious to follow the development of the new Australian sprint sensation Jensen Plowright, who was with him last year.

Seems like he's not too bad indeed, and at Bridgelane there should be plenty of opportunities to come over in Asia later on in the season.

Problem is, that he needs to be a better pick than Dainese though :dizzy

Picking the young Champagne chicken as your most expensive rider over Dainese or Leknessund is brave.

I have a funny feeling that Battistella is going to have a good season is an otherwise poor NTT.

I just didn't think Dainese would get enough opportunities yet, and I never really heard about Leknessund. Maybe I shouldn't have ignored T-72's posts about the big future of the Norwegian youngsters?! ;D

Update 1

And we're off for a new year of the youth CQ game. DJ Sprtsch has the honour to be this year's first leader. With Attilio Viviani, Henok Mulubrhan and Biniam Hailu he scored an impressive 134 points in Tropicale Amissa Bongo. Second placed hfgon1 picked Hailu as well, and he also scored with unique pick Matthew Holmes, who surprised with a stage win on Willunga Hill. Skidmark rounds out the current top-3 with points from Viviani, Hailu and Dainese.

Update 2

Quick update as I haven't got much time:
Nicosix is this update's highest scorer, scoring an impressive 310 points. He had Dainese and Groves collect wins in the Sun Tour, and Hailu is already into profit after finishing 2nd in Laigueglia. With that score, he climbed 5 places into 2nd place.
2nd highest scorer, and new leader overall, is skidmark. He had the same three main scorers as Nicosix: Dainese, Groves and Hailu. The same is true for our third highest scorer and new third place overall, Kazistuta.

Update 3

So, this may very well be the last update in a long while. With very few races on the European calendar, DJ Sprtsch managed to benefit from his slightly unconventional squad. Ravanelli, Hailu and unique pick Mulubhran all scored a couple dozen points in Rwanda, which earns him the number one spot on the highest scorers leaderboard.

Second highest scorer is skidmark, he got points from 8 of his riders, amongst others Hailu, Bagioli and Van Wilder, which is quite impressive considering the limited calendar. MADRAZO follows closely behind with points from amongst others Ravanelli, Bagioli and Erlend Blikra.

Kryvo is the highest mover, jumping 15 positions, his biggest scorer was another up and coming African talent, Hailemichael. Search and LukasCPH both move up 10 places, both of them had Hailu as a main scorer.

Last update, we had a tie for first between skidmark and Nicosix. This update leaves skidmark as the sole leader, in front of Nicosix, while DJ Sprtsch manages to climb onto the podium.

I think it's pretty cool to see so many African stars making a difference, maybe a positive result of the corona pandemic :cool

Update 4

So, after a long break, I'm back with another update, apologies for the delay. We've had quite a few interesting races already and many points have been scored. Let's have a look at the 10 highest scorers since the restart of the season

Top-10 highest scorers since the restart
1   skidmark   690
2   theasian   660
3   Joelsim   659
4   MADRAZO   644
5   danielo   639
6   LosBrolin   630
7   Zuoka   614
8   Leadbelly   610
9   JonEzeitza   600
10   Kryvo   589

As shown above, skidmark, who was already first overall, was the highest scorer, collecting points with Eekhoff, who scored over 200 points in a week and a half, Bagioli and Simmons and many others. The powerful combination of Eekhoff, Bagioli and Simmons is a popular one, and we see these three riders feature on 8 of the 10 highest scoring teams. With many races left in the coming months and these riders clearly in good shape, these teams can expect more points coming their way.

Overall, obviously skidmark remains the top dog with MADRAZO and Joelsim sharing the podium with him. Skidmark has built a solid lead, but despite the fall season nearing, there are still many, many more points to be scored.

Top-10 overall
1   skidmark   1182   =
2   MADRAZO   979   +3
3   Joelsim   939   +9
4   Northerner   895   +4

Update 5

This update's highest scorer is danielo. Andrea Bagioli and Quinn Simmons, both very popular, were among his best scorers, but the difference was made by near-unique pick Attila Valter's win in Hungary. Valter is one of the most expensive riders in the game so he still has some way to go to get into profit, but he's gotten off to a decent start. With this performance, danielo also moved up 6 places to 4th overall.
Leader skidmark was this update's 2nd best scorer, with points from Bagioli and Simmons as well as Alexander Krieger and Biniam Hailu.
With only 3 points less than skidmark, Cordi is our 3rd highest scorer. Like many others, he scored with Bagioli and Simmons, but he also got significant points from amongst others Tobias Foss, Andreas Leknessund and Tom Pidcock. Cordi is also one of the highest movers, climbing 9 places. Squire is the highest mover (+13) followed by Karaev1 (+11). They both have the common combination of Bagioli, Simmons and Foss, with Pidcock added into the mix for Squire and Leknessund for Karaev1.

The overall podium remains the same, with skidmark in 1st place, MADRAZO in 2nd and Joelsim in 3rd.

Update 6

During the last couple of weeks most of our attention went to the Tour and World Championships, but due to the condensed calendar many smaller races took place as well. LukasCPH took full advantage of this, getting the highest score by a significant margin. His main scorers were Andreas Leknessund, Ethan Hayter and Alexander Krieger. With his points haul, Lukas also rocketed up the overall ranking, climbing 14 spots to 2nd place. However, he wasn't the highest mover. That honor is reserved for Zuoka, this update's 2nd highest scorer. Scoring points with Jannik Steimle, Leknessund and Alessandro Covi, Zuoka now sits in 10th place overall.

Third highest scorer as well as third highest mover, comodoro climbed 12 spots thanks to the solid duo Steimle and Hayter.
Overall skidmark remains first, LukasCPH moves into 2nd, however he is a fair distance behind skidmark. JonEzeitza is now 3rd overall.

Update

The latest update isn't quite as exciting as the previous two. We have Wallenquist with the highest score, thanks to almost a 100 points from Florian Vermeersch, who moved up to the ProTour this June. Wallenquist also scored significant points with Andrea Bagioli and Ide Schelling.
Zuoka is our second highest scorer. Zuoka, too, scored with Vermeersch, as well as Andreas Leknessund and Alessandro Covi. Joelsim is our third highest scorer mainly thanks to the combined points of Vermeersch and Bagioli.

We don't see a lot of movement in the rankings this time around. The highest mover, climbing 6 places, is allobroges, who scored with Bagioli and Covi as well as with rare pick Bissegger. Zuoka, the second highest scorer, is second highest mover as well, together with TheArt. They both moved up 4 places. TheArt got points from amongst others Vermeersch and rare pick Johan Jacobs.

Overall, the top-5 remains the same. Zuoka climbs to 6th overall, while Kryvo and theasian enter the top-10. Skidmark is still our leader, but most of the top-10 gained some ground on him this update.
