Title: [2.Pro] Vuelta a San Juan
Post by: Leadbelly on January 08, 2020, 15:18
Vuelta a San Juan 26th January - 2nd February

Etapa 1: San Juan - San Juan (163.5 km)

Etapa 2: Pocito - Pocito (168.7 km)

Etapa 3: Ullum - Dique Punta Negra TT (15.2 km)

This is the finale of the regular stage won in previous years by Villalobos* and Alaphilippe.

Etapa 4: San José de Jáchal - Valle Fértil / Villa San Agustín (185.8 km)

Etapa 5: San Martin - Alto Colorado (169.5 km)

Etapa 6: Circuito San Juan Villicúm - Circuito San Juan Villicúm (155 km)

Etapa 7: San Juan - San Juan (141.3 km)

The first race of the new ProSeries. It's basically .HC with bells on. Some of the things that are different are the required number of pro teams. If you want your race to remain at this level you'll need to satisfy the conditions below:

The 2019 figures presumably were the criteria for .HC

One other change (it might have some relevance for this race) is that any competing rider for a CT team or national selection "must have submitted accurate and up-to-date whereabouts information to an anti-doping organisation for a minimum period of 6 weeks and have been subject to testing in accordance with the athlete biological passport programme as implemented by the UCI."

SEP San Juan were complaining about the "vampires" late last year.

Naranjo repeats his triumph from 12 months ago. Crucially this time however he didn't get injured in the process and will be able to make his mark in San Juan.

It is a bit surprising that they accepted the invitation after last year's shenanigans. They were very childish at best in the aftermath of the incident with Keisse and I half expected Lefevre to continue in that vein by going elsewhere this year, but common sense has prevailed.

Richeze is getting on a bit now (37 in two months time), but he was still getting GT stage podiums last year, so I don't think we'll see a massive drop off in his lead-out prowess just yet.

Indeed, desperate times call for desperate measures. Neither this selection nor the TDU one inspires too much confidence I have to say. All the big guns must be riding Mallorca.

Sagan turns 30 on the same day as the opening stage. He may be yesterday's man, but the organizers still believe in him and have a Sagan Fondo on the rest day ($50-200 entrance fee).

There are three rather obvious picks for the sprint stages, but as for the GC? I don't have a scooby.

Usually pretty accurate. I reckon if you followed Emil Axelgaard's previews and bet on it, you'd beat the bookies handsomely over the course of a year.

Calling Bananito The Bumble Bee also made me guffaw!

Viewing Options

Eurosport Player has the complete race from start to finish. If you just have it on your TV it will be the last 60-90 minutes of each stage.

GCN should be an option if you live in an area where no broadcaster has the viewing rights.

The local broadcast will be here (https://sisanjuan.gob.ar/servicios/transmision-en-vivo). Not sure if geo-restricted or not, I'm pretty sure it wasn't last year.

Another year, another Quick Step story.

This time they have complained about time loses incurred by the riders involved in the big crash, just outside the 3 km boundary.
Apparently the crash was caused by a spectator stepping out for a better view.

The jury will make a decision around midday CET time.

A bit of a surprise winner. Gaviria was held up by the crash and couldn't quite get back to the front, Hodeg went too early (?) and I dunno what was up with Sagan - he hardly got out of the saddle.

There will be more discussions about the almost inevitable crash (27 teams on big, wide, straight roads with no kerb). A lot of names would have lost time without the above decision.

Quote from: Sagan
Today was a difficult day, especially because of the hot weather conditions. Thanks to my teammates I was in a very good position in the final kilometres, but the sprint started very early. That’s why some other riders who came from behind could reach a higher speed in the end. The good news is that my legs felt very good all day, so I’m looking forward to another chance tomorrow.

The Deceuninck race report also mentioned a bit of a headwind in the finale.

The readjusted result is out and nobody of GC consequence lost any time.

Not a great start for the :carrot in their first race at the PCT level. Half the team getting dropped (at the dam climb presumably) and not making it back before the crash. Tbf though Ballerin was in the break and Aranburu tweeted something about not being great due to a fall.

Confession

Until 10 seconds ago, I had always thought this race was in Puerto Rico.
I'm totally serious.  :D

Obviously, I've never looked into it, followed a single link, watched even the briefest of clips, or read one race report. But for as long as I've ever heard of it (which is probably been quite a few years) I had just always assumed it that it took place on that tiny island in the Caribbean.
:fp

I've no idea why this race always had such a blind spot for me, particularly because having a race in Puerto Rico had always piqued my interest a bit, as I wasn't sure just how such an event would've ever come to be, or how it ever could've sustained itself. Well now, finally, I think I've got an answer to those pressing questions!
:lol

In my defense, there's quite a significant Puerto Rican population around central Connecticut, and so it's often in the news, and even more so recently with the Hurricanes and other disasters. I've worked with Puerto Ricans, played in bands with Puerto Ricans, have close friends who are Puerto Rican, and know plenty of people who vacation in Puerto Rico. So when I hear "San Juan," I instantly associate that with Puerto Rico, and nowhere else.

But from the updates I've come across this evening, this race seems totally bonkers—no matter where it takes place!
:o

I'll try to be more informed moving forward.  :angel

I may even try to watch a bit of it if I can.  :D

Alaphilippe lost 20" in stage 2, which kind of suggests he's not going for GC. He did the lead out for Hodeg.

Alaphilippe lost 20" in stage 2, which kind of suggests he's not going for GC. He did the lead out for Hodeg.

yeah, he also lost 15s the day before, but somehow ended up with the same time although he was not affected by the crash.

As usual, today's time trial will be on road bikes, btw

As they all should be.  :P

If I remember correctly, today's stage is the one that goes into the national park and has some stunning and unusual scenery, plus the odd Condor.

Unfortunately, this year could also have some stunning and unusual weather, with temperatures more reminiscent of winter and a high risk of thunderstorms.
Could get a bit hairy out in them thar hills.

Wow. I need to go back and watch some of the replay of his ride. I missed it yesterday, but was really curious to see what his form looks like. All the more reason to banish TT bikes from the face of the earth. I want to know what these guys look like on "real" bikes.

If you look at the result and think wow, then the ride isn't a million miles away from that thought. The kid is a freak.

We are benevolent masters.
The TDU counts as penance, and you are forthwith required only to watch those San Juan stages you want ...

... as long as you do a rain dance per week for Paris-Roubaix. :D

Give stage 2 a miss.

Unless of course you’re looking for a substitute for The Tour of California this year.

Gaviria went early-ish, but unlike the others on stage 1, he had the legs to hold on.

Sagan still not looking great.

Rest day today (unless you're riding the Sagan Fondo).

Sagan still not looking great.

As I was suggesting in the Stage 3 live chat:

Is it just me, or does Sagan look like he put on a significant amount of weight?

I realize it's only January, but I don't remember seeing him look so bloated before. Lighting and camera angles can often play tricks on the eyes, but there was some extended footage of him, from different angles, that was just not very flattering.

So what gives? :slow

He always looks big. Albeit I have a feeling he’s lost a bit of motivation, whether that’s because the team isn’t solely focused on him anymore, or whether it’s just because he’s rolling in cash, or whether it’s just because he’s a bit bored of sprint stages/road cycling I don’t know. I just get that feeling that his heart isn’t quite as in it as it used to be.

Yes, this plays a big role. He looked so happy being married and with his wife, from what I can tell from photos and short video clips.

We don't know why they split, and it's none of our business, but it's obvious he's broken-hearted at the moment. He's going through the motions, and because he is a stellar athlete, that's still enough to get results from time to time.
Time heals all wounds, they say. We'll see how long it'll take for time to heal Sagan's inner wounds.

Yeah, especially as the punchline was that the old one won the three way battle, despite giving McNulty a minute and a half head start.
At least the echelons on the flatlands were exciting and gave us hope of an upset.
Another oddity was no completely ET Argentine rider this year. :D

Not that enlightening.

There is a bit more info in Het Nieuwsblad about how it happened.

https://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20200201_04830881

He was in a good position on the descent, but when they got to the bottom and the pace dropped momentarily, he got swamped a bit as others came around the sides. Thus when UAE and Bora went again, he was trapped.
