Title: Ciclismo Cup 2020 (Coppi e Bartali)
Post by: search on February 15, 2020, 17:04
Ciclismo Cup 2020

Apart from some minor date changes (AIR is one month earlier, some of the September races swept places), this year's Ciclismo Cup will be decided on a similar calendar of races as last year:

Also the rules (https://legaciclismo.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/regolamento-ciclismo-cup-2020.pdf) seem still to about as complicated as usual.

Coverage for all races (some live, some highlights only) will still be distributed by PMG sport (both online, as well as sold to Rai and/or Eurosport), but it may be geo-restricted.

Trofeo Laigueglia

Sunday, February 16th

First race is Trofeo Laigueglia tomorrow, on the same parcours as usual, so it should be an entertaining race.

For 1.Pro level, the start list looks a but poor though, with only 2 WT teams.

Thereby they missed the UCI Pro Series mimimum standards (of 3 WT teams and at least 11 WT and/or PCT teams in total), as far as I can see.

Still, some good guys are around of course. For example last year's winner #gazprom Velasco, his team mate #gazprom Canola, #ag2r Vendrame, #teamit Ciccone, #delko Finetto, # #vinizabu Visconti, #arkea Rosa, #amore Tizza and so on

looks like the race itself had a (fairly poor quality, but still) stream up on Youtube

that Hailu dude (or Biniam? Biniyam? Ghirmay? Girmaye? Grmaye? - I'll just stick with Hailu, I guess) seems to be even stronger than expected... definitely not your typical kind of "sprinter", by the look of it.

that Hailu dude (or Biniam? Biniyam? Ghirmay? Girmaye? Grmaye? - I'll just stick with Hailu, I guess) seems to be even stronger than expected... definitely not your typical kind of "sprinter", by the look of it.
Eritrean & Ethiopian names don't work like we're used to:
His own given name is Biniyam[1]. That is followed by his father's name, Ghirmay[2], and further by his father's father's name, Hailu[3]. In theory, the list could go on.

On 6 February 2000, Ghirmay, son of Hailu, had a son, and he named that son Biniyam. Said Biniyam is now a rather successful cyclist - but, like people from e.g. Iceland, he doesn't have a family name as such.

The captain of Iceland's football national team is known to every Icelander as "Aron". "Gunnarsson" is only ever used if necessary to distinguish from other Arons. I imagine that it's similar in Eritrea/Ethiopia; this rider would call himself Biniyam first and foremost.

If we have to adhere to the European custom of family names, Ghirmay is a far better 'substitute' than Hailu. But I imagine that whoever fills out forms for UCI licences in the Eritrean cycling federation doesn't care about all of that and simply takes the names as they are, putting "Biniyam Ghirmay" in the first field (because that's the 'important' part, right?), and "Hailu" in the second field ... not realising that it's the second field that is for the 'surname'.

The same way that other *er riders are called Daniel Teklehaimanot or Natnael Berhane and not Daniel Girmazion or Natnael Teweldemedhin, this one should be called Biniyam Ghirmay and not Biniyam Hailu.
 1. or Binyam, or Biniam
 2.  or Girmay, Grmay, Grmaye, Ghirmaye, Girmaye ...
 3. apparently there's only one transliteration into Latin for this.

#amore Marco Tizza claims he would have been the fastest from that front group (of him, Ciccone, Rosa and Ghirmay) by the way - so I guess he has never seen Ghirmay sprint ;)

the Ciclismo Cup is in full swing again already, so time for a little update - here's the new schedule:

In the end of October, there's also the 5-day Giro di Sardegna newly added to the calendar.

Last week, the Gran Trittico Lombardo (on a parcours basically combining the three Trittico races, with the finish of Tre Valli Varesine) was won by #astana Gorka Izagirre:

It was a bit of a wet day, so it must have felt like riding on home soil for the two Basque riders ending up in front

(https://scontent-muc2-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.2885-15/e35/s1080x1080/116654965_732110117582632_1808207362358420914_n.jpg?_nc_ht=scontent-muc2-1.cdninstagram.com&_nc_cat=104&_nc_ohc=SjSSAg49OssAX_tQeyn&oh=c9045eeaf4a2e80a72d4a7b34d4d8408&oe=5F59C575)

Milano-Torino a couple of days later was completely flat this year, so not much to report from that one. #jumbo Van Aert did a strong sprint into 3rd though, and also #wanty van Poppel was up there, after a couple of poor years. According to himself, he is as strong as never before

After three races, Trofeo Laiguegla winner #trek Giulio Ciccone still leads the Ciclismo Cup. #androni Androni is first in the team rankings

Il Gran Piemonte

Wednesday, August 12th

The Ciclismo Cup continues with the Giro del Piemonte this Wednesday. The race has seen all kind of profiles over the recent years, from completely flat (2018, won by Sonny Colbrelli) to a mountain-top finish (won by Egan Bernal in 2019). This year it's more traditionally, on the hilly side:

The race’s final climb is the same the peloton faced at the finish of the Barbaresco-Barolo ITT in 2014’s Giro d’Italia, now with an extra stretch of ascending required before reaching the line.

The time trial was won by #quickstep Rigoberto Uran back then, who will not be around this year though:
As usual, RCS decided not to invite any Continental teams, but #friuli Aleotti & Milan, #colpack Gazzoli, #biesse Plebani, #tirol Rivi, same as Marco Marcellusi & Luca Colnaghi got a late call to compete for the #teamit Italian National Team.

The race will be live on Eurosport in the late afternoon, and also on RaiSport at 16:30 cest

overall, not a super exciting race, but #jumbo George Bennett turned himself into a serious Lombardia contender, and #uae Diego Ulissi was clearly the quickest uphill-sprinter but just lost out for the 2nd time within a week

Giro dell'Emilia

Tuesday, August 18th

The Italian classics season continues with the beautiful Giro dell'Emilia tomorrow, on a similar course as in recent years:

The (provisional) start list doesn't look too strong in depth, but features most of those who were up there in Lombardia, like #astana Fuglsang & Vlasov, #trek Nibali & Ciccone, #ineos Carapaz and #uae Ulissi. Also former winners #vinizabu Giovanni Visconti and #circus Jan Bakelants are around, same as some interesting in-shape prospects like #deceuninck João Almeida and #rally Gavin Mannion.

Unfortunately, catching a stream could turn out to be difficult, and there only seems to be live coverage on *it Rai Sport, from 15:00 to 16:30 cect.

yeah, seems like all GS Emilia races are produced by Rai again, not by PMG anymore, and Eurosport doesn't have any kind of deal with them (yet)

Why would anyone be interested in watching a top cycling race? :P
Sometimes I despair of this sport. :fp

Heck, I have Rai Sport on my tv and I can guarantee the coverage will be blocked.
My hope is that their full coverage repeat at 20-30 will be FTA.

this turned out to be a pretty unusual race. Instead of waiting for the final climb, basically all favourites went on the move three laps out, never to be seen again by anyone back in the peloton. #deceuninck Deceuninck kept on attacking then, first with Bagioli going solo, then with Almeida, and it looked very good for him to take the win for a while.

...but then #trek Ciccone started to put the hammer down in the chase group, #astana Vlasov grabbed the opportunity, attacked, and went past Almeida within the final 500m. Trek's efforts were rewarded with 7th and 8th by the way, from an eight man escape group  :S.

Good win for Vlasov, another Sibiu Tour alumnus! :cool

My first thought at this photo was "where's his *ru chestband?" - but then I checked and saw that the Russian RR championships had been held on Sunday 16 August, won by #louletano Sergey Shilov.

Trofeo Matteotti

Saturday, August 29th

next one is Trofeo Matteotti on Saturday, on the same mickey mouse parcours as usual

given that it starts in three days, there's not much information available yet, but the list of participating teams looks pretty good at least:
#movistar Betancur was supposed to start, but I don't think he made it to Europe yet, and then Movistar probably decided that it didn't make much sense to take part without him ;).

There's an hour of highlight coverage on Rai Sports at 19:05, so no live coverage, I guess - which means that it won't clash with the Tour at least.

#uae Conti took the win, with apparently an early attack (he's up the road already when those final 10 minutes of the RAI highlight show available online start at least ;) ) - but not quite in the usual fashion, as #burgos Rubio bridged to him with 200m to go.

there also was another race today, the Memorial Pantani, where #astana Fabio Felline took his first win in over three years
