Somebody tried to get the Mondrian vibe across ...

... but, in my opinion, just succeeded at showing how Mondrian's composition was better. :P

Probably for legal reasons they couldn't be too close to it and looking back at the original jersey, it had a lot of grey in it. Maybe they wanted it a bit brighter.

Very strong team, but first race of the season for all of them. How will the legs react?

Is it just me, or are they discussing a large empty rectangle?

Not a nailed on bunch sprint tomorrow. Up and down right from the start, some rusty legs and rusty team mates out there and I believe the wind (20km/h) will be coming from the NW and therefore a tailwind in the finale. Could be a opportunity for a Cavagna type rider to get away.

GC wise a lot of tipsters seem to be favouring the Astana duo of Vlasov/Lutsenko, but I'm leaning towards Bernal. Apart from the first stage at Besseges he was getting in the action and looked okay I thought. Even if not 100% he usually gives it his all anyway.

Anything else to watch out for?

#auber

Maldonado had to withdraw due to Covid. Hopefully he's the only one. New boy Rossetto makes his debut and we should look for him in the breaks.

The ginger prince is making his debut for the team. He should get a few races for them before he transfers out mid-season.

Quote
(Bernal's) first major goal of the season will come at the Giro d'Italia, with Provence just a step on the way to that race, his debut. As a result, he said that he'll be working for the team this week, specifically to help his compatriot and fellow Androni Giocattoli graduate Iván Sosa.

"I think for us our first card will be him, he's in a really good shape so I'll try to help him.

Egan doesn't agree with me. :(

Has Bellerini become the next big sprinter in Deceuninck - Quick Step. He has already beaten Demare, Ackermann. I think he was supposed to be a lead-out for Jakobsen, but given the situation, he had to train for it.

You could tell something was going to happen. The first riders got through, but the amount of reaction time they had to swerve got less and less until *crash bang wallop*. Let's see the UCI/CPA do something about this.

Nevertheless it was an entertaining stage and someone from Deceuninck was a deserving winner.

Assuming these are the final times, the GC losers on the stage were: Mas, Wellens, Ciccone, Leknessund, Ion Izagirre and De La Parte.

In a way I hope not, as he's more than just a sprinter and it would be a shame if he just focused on that. Better in my book to be an all-rounder with a (very) fast finish.

Anyway he now must be plan B at MSR behind Alaphilippe. Bennett just hasn't got a hope there I fear unless all the dice fall in his favour.

Just a comment to reduce the hype level a little:

#dsm Andreas Leknessund announced a few weeks back he´s no longer considering himself s future GC candidate and that he would like to focus in other objectives. Those were not specified, but I think it´s going to be time trials and classics.

Every cycling fan in Norway goes  :TT but looking at the previous GC rider from that team: better to have a rider that´s happy with what he is doing and may have more years on top form than Dumoulin.

(Leknessund is very sceptical about the need for weight loss to become a to GC rider. In other news, one of his former #unox teammates was in the local news today. +10 kgs last year, and riding better than ever.)

(This from my sofa after 2x super-g...I only checked the results from Provence here  :D)

EDIT: this message has been prepared for future smileys from velorooms´ chief fashionista!

Today's finish. One for sprinters or puncheurs.

In contrast today was fairly dull. A few crashes and spectators (at least) twice being donkeys the main low-lights.

Tomorrow's finish:

Snowing on Ventoux. They'll have a look in the morning and make a decision then about the stage. The reply suggests the alternative would be a finish a short distance outside Bedoin at the foot of the climb - another Ballerini win?

Just checked the current meteo conditions at the summit of the Ventoux and in comparison to what it's like here, it's like the Bahamas.

https://www.meteo-ventoux.fr/

I have -5C and my ressenti is -15C.

Chalet-Reynard is significantly milder. Forecast suggests the snow will turn to sleet.
Tomorrow 3C and sunny so quite doable.

One thing I'm sure I read earlier in the week was that spectators were banned already from the climb, so that's one major issue they won't have to factor into the snow equation.

Like he was cycling out of a Turner Painting.

Not that bad a final climb and the winning attack came a bit further out than the last km. Can't ask too much more on this type of parcour.

Impressive from Rodriguez (as I said in chat, just turned twenty the other week), less so from De Plus.
