Title: 2022 Giro CQ Game
Post by: Armchair Cyclist on April 27, 2022, 19:30
Here we go again:
For those who already know how it all works, the key info is unchanged budget of 3500, 8 men rider prices as of update to be released on 2nd May, submit by start of stage 1 on 6th May, and selection spreadsheet is here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R50MnJnXdyzJ3bRNrx1eFfthi9rs0IT5/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true).

If you found it necessary to read beyond that, you might be new to the games, in which case you are very welcome.

In the Giro CQ Game your challenge is to select a team of 8 riders that will be competing in the Giro: your team remains unchanged throughout, for better or worse.  There is no selecting different riders for different stages, any more than the DSes get to do so.
The restriction on your team is that they must have a total cost of 3500 or less, based on their CQ points gained for the year to 1st May (http://cqranking.com).  That is determined by a download of scores that should be available on the afternoon of Monday 2nd May on that excellent website, which I shall upload to a selection tool here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R50MnJnXdyzJ3bRNrx1eFfthi9rs0IT5/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true)  (If you prefer not to use that tool, you are looking for the red number in a white box just below the old-fashioned fuel gauge style meter in the top right of a rider's page, such as this example that you won't be using (https://cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/rider.asp?riderid=26526), but that figure can change from day to day: it is the number as of the end of Sunday 1st that matters).

Your selected riders can gain points according to the CQ scale for GC position (500 for the winner, then 375, 315, 265, 240 down to 135 for 10th, 44 for 30th, 16 for 50th and 15 for all finishers below that), for being awarded the Pink jersey (18 points per stage, except the last one), for stage position (70 points, then 40, 25, 15, 10 down to 1 for 10th) and for final ranking in the climbing and points classifications (same distribution as for stages, no points for leading the classification during the race, no points for the young rider classification).

I will update daily, real life permitting, with a table based on each team's projected finish if nothing were to change in the classifications from that point on, and also with a secondary classification ("purplish points", because I won't concede that that colour is described as cyclamen in English) based only on stage finish points.  Some managers like to stack their teams with sprinters and breakaway riders with an eye on that prize.

To enter, please sent your list of 8 riders (please do not append info like their cost or teams, it creates extra work for me) to me by PM on either Cycling News Forum or VeloRooms (you will contribute to the average score of your chosen platform in the inter-Forum challenge) by the start of the race on Friday 6th (11:40 CET I believe).  I will lodge my selection with the first entrant (usually Comodoro, but sometimes others are faster) as soon as possible to ensure I am above suspicion.  PLEASE send the riders' names in the form in which they appear on the CQ site (and therefore in the selection spreadsheet), otherwise entering your team becomes much more laborious.  And while you can start planning, please do not submit your teams until the prices are finalised: if riders are doing Romandie or Eschborn-Frankfurt, or if they did them last year, the numbers will probably be wrong.

If you do not leave submitting your team until the last minute, I should be able to warn you if there is any error and give you a chance to change it.  I do have a strangely contrived set of criteria by which replacements are selected if you are over budget or have a non-starter, but I'll only post it if necessary.

Please do have a go: it's a bit of fun, and it feels far more worth my time if there is a good number of entrants.  Feel free to publicise it wherever seems appropriate.

And as I usually say on my PMs to confirm receipt of teams, good luck to your teams, and enjoy the game and the Giro.

OK  the price download is in place, so the selection spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R50MnJnXdyzJ3bRNrx1eFfthi9rs0IT5/edit#gid=2003132756) has been updated.  15 out of 22 teams have confirmed their lineups.

Only about 3 1/2 days to get your teams in: let's go!

Edit: And as predicted, Comodoro is the first to get his team in, and mine is on record with him.

All the teams are confirmed, but with 12 teams in so far, there are only 2 to represent VeloRooms.  This forum has a fine reputation to uphold on beating Cycling News in most of these games, so don't forget to contribute to the effort.

Hmmm this isn't so easy this year. Usually there are a few essential low costing picks that enable you to spend big on a couple of guys, but I don't see them this time round.

Yeah.
I currently have 3 versions of my team, all because I can't find an alternative for just one rider and decide which of two big spends to opt for...

My last gratuitous bumping of the thread to remind you to enter.

27 teams submitted so far (I hope I have acknowledged all of them), 61 different riders selected, 3 of them on more than half the teams, and 28 unique picks.

My work appointment for Friday pm has been cancelled, so I'll be working on the lists and numbers while watching stage one.  Make sure your list of 8 is with me before it starts so that you are included. (and if you do it before about 8am UK time I'll be able to check it for you).

If you're not in it, you can't win it!

The riders

An interesting distribution.  There were hardly any riders starting in the 700-900 bracket, where riders one might expect in the top ten would often be found and can be fairly popular picks.  That means that there are far more riders being picked in the 300-450 bracket (with some real gems in that range), so far fewer of the variety of under 100 pt riders, among whom in most years we would find a lot of the variety in picks, and the source of a large proportion of the number of riders relevant to the game.

So, out of 37 teams, here are the numbers going for each rider:

27: LANDA MEANA Mikel
20: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
19: EWAN Caleb
18: CARTHY Hugh, YATES Simon
15: GALL Felix
12: KÄMNA Lennard
11: ARENSMAN Thymen
Those eight have a within-budget total cost of 3268, so neatly define themselves as the Collective Wisdom team.

9: CICCONE Giulio, DUMOULIN Tom
8: FOSS Tobias Svendsen
7: CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio, HINDLEY Jai
6: SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro, VAN DER POEL Mathieu
5: BARDET Romain, BUCHMANN Emanuel, GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
4: GIRMAY HAILU Biniam, KNOX James, POZZOVIVO Domenico
3: BALLERINI Davide, CIMOLAI Davide, DE GENDT Thomas, HAMILTON Lucas, KELDERMAN Wilco, NIBALI Vincenzo, PETERS Nans, VALTER Attila
2: CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander, CORT NIELSEN Magnus, DOWSETT Alex, FELLINE Fabio, FIORELLI Filippo, HEPBURN Michael, MODOLO Sacha, ROSA Diego, SIVAKOV Pavel, SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias, TAARAMÄE Rein

and I hope that if you were to count the asterisks above, there will be 31 of them.

Slow Climber has, especially for a rookie in these games, an extraordinarily high popularity score, and he only differs in one pick from the Collective Wisdom team: he has the still fairly popular Foss rather than Kamna, thus making the tracking of the Collective Wisdom team almost redundant.

Major picks
I'll define a major pick as a rider with a cost of 700 points or more.  We seem to have unusually few teams that have more than one of them this time, perhaps because of the previously mentioned wealth of riders in the 300-450 range.
So those who have doubled up are:
Carapaz & van der Poel: Bicycle Boy
Carapaz and Yates: Armchair Cyclist
Carapaz & Demare: Josedin
Van der Poel & Bardet: Salvarani
Yates & Bardet:  Scrooll07 and TRiley36
Yates & Girmay: Zigzag Wanderer
Bilbao & Girmay: Titan31

so the others only have one of these expensive picks:
Almeida: Mellow Velo
Carapaz: Blues in the Bottle, Search and Vladimir
Van der Poel: Berflamand, DJSprtsch, Rufs and Yellow Knight
Yates: Amis Velo,  Archie Boy, Comodoro, Jumbo Visma Fan, Kazistuta, Leadbelly,  Manafana, Northerner, Nyssinator, Otoxiep87, Rote Laterne, Safe Bet, Slow Climber and Will10
Martin: Samu Cuenca
Bardet: Bonimenier and Del1962
Girmay: Bminchow and Evans is the Best

while Redhead Dane has unique Pick De La Cruz (549 pts) as her most expensive team member.

Team Similarity

We don't have any identical selections this time around, so I haven't had to ask any teams to select a ninth man.

I have already mentioned the 7 man overlap between Slow Climber and the Collective Wisdom team, but there are a few teams that have 75% co-incidence with another:
Amis Velo & Leadbelly
Amis Velo & Rote Laterne
Comodoro and Manafana
Leadbelly & Rote Laterne
Northerner & Rote Laterne
Safe Bet & Slow Climber

Of course, whether the degree of similarity of teams is relevant depends on whether the riders who are distinctive to each team perform.

I was very surprised to see that no-one other than myself went for the Carapaz-Yates combination: I suspect that leaves me either the winner, or outside the top 20.  A similar prediction might be made of Mellow Velo (only manager to choose Almeida) and Bicycle Boy (two of the three most expensive riders in the race).  I suppose it is true of Redhead Dane too, but for rather different reasons.

Right, now I have some results to process (but not for a little while: other tasks await me...)

Stage 1
So far, it looks like Contador was on to something, while 19 teams with Ewan are wondering if their chances are already gone.

Purple points
The points for stage placings, and nothing else, make up the minor classification.  But the points distribution is different from that in the race, so while riders at the top of maglia ciclamina ranking will probably do well here, the order will not be an exact replica.

What we have here are the GC points as though the Giro were to finish with no further change in rankings, here and now, KoM and Points classification points on the same basis, stage points as above, and an 18 point bonus for anyone to wear the pink jersey the next day.

Girmay + Bilboa don't quite outscore Van der Poel +Carapaz, but by the time other riders are included, Titan takes the first leader's spot.

InterForum Challenge
Those who submit their entries via VeloRooms (AmisVelo, Archie Boy, Josedin, Leadbelly, Mellow Velo, Otoxiep87, Rote Laterne, Scrooll07 and Search) against the rest (apart from me) representing Cycling News Forum, by average scores.  I won't report it every day, but I'll update from time to time.
I can't imagine there is anything causative about it, but neither MvdP nor Girmay were chosen by anybody at VeloRooms, so the averages after the first stage are anything but close:
CN 598.8
VR 357.2

All of the numbers are in the Spreadsheet on Google Docs (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11haWffZm_Bng3kfcbo5lpPJSlyfL0cEh/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=110432943115475649598&rtpof=true&sd=true).  It will be available in the updated form (unless something goes wrong) at the same location throughout, so come back to this link on the days that I don't bother posting it.

Stage 2  Short Budapest Time Trial
One of the combinations of major picks that no-one went for is Van der Poel & Yates: that team would have had an excellent start.

Purple points
But not at all bad for more than half the teams.
YATES Simon      70      18
VAN DER POEL Mathieu      40      6
DUMOULIN Tom      25      9
SOBRERO Matteo      15      0
TULETT Ben      10      0
FOSS Tobias Svendsen      7      8
KELDERMAN Wilco      5      3
KÄMNA Lennard      3      12
SCHMID Mauro      2      1
ARENSMAN Thymen      1      11

It seems churlish to only show a top ten for this today when for teams all the way down today is the main points they have.  Three teams combine Yates and Dumoulin (and RL also has Kamna)

Pink points
Because these are projections, they can go down as well as up.  For example, Girmay is no longer second on GC, so is no longer on schedule for 375 points for that.  I'll show the main changes for riders relevant to the game, but what is deemed significant may vary day to day.

I suspect it will take until at least after Etna, possibly until after Blockhaus, before any conclusions can be drawn from the table.  However, it will stabilise a bit tomorrow, because a sprint stage will generally have little effect other than the daily stage points.

Stage 3
Enter the sprinters, exit Hungary

Purple points

The unselected rider comes out victorious, the widely picked one takes very few points.
CAVENDISH Mark      70      0
DEMARE Arnaud      40      1(Josedin)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      25      5
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam      15      4

THEUNS Edward      7      0
CONSONNI Simone      5      0
EWAN Caleb      3      19
DAINESE Alberto      2      1
BAUHAUS Phil      1      1

Today
Gaviria + Girmay would equal Demare, but EitB also has Ewan.

Pink points
Absolutely no change in the GC projected points (apart from the unfortunate, and unpicked, Tratnik losing his 15 finisher points) and some alteration in the points and mountains classifications (top climbers Zabel and Eenkhorn passing MvdP in the latter, so he ends up with a negative change today).  So not much happening today:
DEMARE Arnaud      55      1 team

Stage 4  Etna

Purple points

It's fairly rare for all of the top ten to have been selected, so nine of them is pretty good, even if they were largely unique picks, apart from the popular winner.

KÄMNA Lennard      70      12
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro      40      1
TAARAMÄE Rein      25      2
MONIQUET Sylvain      15      0
VANSEVENANT Mauri      10      1
LEEMREIZE Gijs      7      1
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio      5      7
BARDET Romain      3      5
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello      2      1
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves      1      1

Today
TRiley not only has Kamna and unique pick JP Lopez, but Bardet too.

2      JumboVismaFan      80
3      BluesInTheBottle      75
3      Search      75
5      Del1962      73
5      Salvarani      73
7      DJSprtsch      70
7      Kazistuta      70
7      Leadbelly      70
7      Rote_Laterne      70
7      SamuCuenca      70
7      Will10      70

Standings
TRiley is above Salvarani on the basis of my rule that the top scoring non-shared contributor to a team is disregarded (thus rewarding teams with a more even spread of scorers).  The two teams in 5th cannot be thus split.
1      DJSprtsch      211      0
2      Triley36      186      22
3      Salvarani      186      3
4      JumboVismaFan      178      9
5      Kazistuta      171      6
5      Rote_Laterne      171      6
7      Will10      155      11
8      Leadbelly      146      14
9      Rufs      138      -7
10      EvansIsTheBest      134      -2

Pink points
Lots of changes in the upper echelons of the GC table, even if some of them are likely to be temporary.
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro      579      1
KÄMNA Lennard      503      12
TAARAMÄE Rein      350      2
VANSEVENANT Mauri      194      1
LANDA MEANA Mikel      50      27
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves      46      1
PORTE Richie      46      0
SOSA CUERVO Ivan Ramiro      45      6
ARENSMAN Thymen      44      11
HAMILTON Lucas      44      3
LEEMREIZE Gijs      43      1
CICCONE Giulio      43      9
BARDET Romain      42      5
CARTHY Hugh      42      18
BUCHMANN Emanuel      41      5
HIRT Jan      41      0
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel      -36      20
SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias      -50      2
FELLINE Fabio      -59      2
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam      -70      4
NIBALI Vincenzo      -72      3
SCHMID Mauro      -93      1
YATES Simon      -121      18
FOSS Tobias Svendsen      -146      8
DUMOULIN Tom      -298      9
VAN DER POEL Mathieu      -508      6
Losses can be deceptive as well.  Although Yates seems to have lost a lot more today than MA Lopez, he is still poised to get plenty of GC points (and quite possibly more as today's protagonists drop away), while obviously the day's less successful Lopez will now be a 500 point of their spend that will yield nothing for the more than half the field that has him. Although for Van der Poel and Dumoulin, the drops probably give a truer indication of their GC expectation than their previous standings.

A fairly huge range of outcomes for the day:

TRiley's position looks good for as long as Lopez stays in pink.  And even after that, he will have several days worth of pink jersey bonuses and a team that would still be top even if all JPL's projected points were removed.

The interforum challenge is a lot closer than it was after stage 1:  CN 816, VR 791

Stages 7, 8 and 9, and Rest day round up

Pink points

I am not going to try to break the rider score changes down day by day: nearly all of them were on Sunday, apart from JP Lopez taking 18 pink jersey points a day, Guillaume Martin rising to 4th, then down to 6th today, and Kamna losing the lead in the KoM classification, and some DNFs.

So the main rider score nett changes over the three days are:
HINDLEY Jai      229      7
BARDET Romain      222      5
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves      198      1
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio      171      7
MARTIN Guillaume      167      1
POZZOVIVO Domenico      106      4
LANDA MEANA Mikel      93      27
BUCHMANN Emanuel      93      5
DE GENDT Thomas      75      3
ROSA Diego      68      2
NIBALI Vincenzo      63      3
FORTUNATO Lorenzo      46      1
CARR Simon      -48      1
KELDERMAN Wilco      -159      3
VANSEVENANT Mauri      -195      1
YATES Simon      -211      18
TAARAMÄE Rein      -282      2
KÄMNA Lennard      -323      12

The table takes on some semblance of what we might expect, but surely with a fair bit of change still to come.  Teams with, Kamna, Vansevenant and Taaramae are now looking at something more akin to what they might have expected: teams with Yates are perhaps less likely to have anticipated finding themselves contemplating a lesser outcome.

Nett team changes over the three stages
1      BicycleBoy      357   Carapaz/Pozzovivo/De Gendt
2      Vladimir      345   Carapaz/Buchmann/Nibali
3      Josedin      342   Carapaz/Landa/De Gendt
4      Mellow_Velo      306   Almeida/Landa
5      Berflamand      298   Pozzovivo/Buchmann/Landa
6      Northerner      222

Tomorrow will probably be for the breakaway, so that is likely to mean another day where purple point changes are more significant than pink ones, but the purple point scorers may be those we haven't seen much of yet.  Some of those rare, makeweight picks may get a mention.

Stage 12
Breakaway, 'nuff said.

Purple points
OLDANI Stefano      70      0
ROTA Lorenzo      40      0
LEEMREIZE Gijs      25      1
MOLLEMA Bauke      15      0
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago      10      0
KELDERMAN Wilco      7      3
HAMILTON Lucas      5      3
VENDRAME Andrea      3      1
TAARAMÄE Rein      2      2
EENKHOORN Pascal      1      0

Today
1      Scrooll07      25
2      Bminchow      7
2      Bonimenier      7
2      Nyssinator      7
5      Armchair_Cyclist      5
5      Rufs      5
5      Titan31      5
8      Will10      3
9      EvansIsTheBest      2
9      Laarsland      2
Evans is the Best extends his lead by 2 points; no-one else who scored was in the top ten, and won't break into it with such paltry scores today.

Pink points
Kelderman, Hamilton and Mollema gain some GC positions, and Mollema moves up in the KoM classification.  Ewan's departure doesn't actually cost his 19 teams very many points, but they will not feel as though they have had value for their investment.

For the first time in many stages, T Riley is within sight of the chasers.  And just when I was thinking of writing that even with the probability of Lopez dropping to about 10th that he likely had enough (with Bardet, Landa and accumulated jersey points) to hang on to the lead.  That looks a lot less likely now, but how high a place can Lopez keep? (and might Rosa hang onto those 70 points for the blue jersey?)

And just about the only thing that didn't change today is the interforum challenge position:

Looks like it's gonna be a topsy-turvy last week, the top-3 could very easily swap with 4-6 depending on what happens between Carapaz and Hindley. My hopes rest on Hindley winning that battle, Ciccone picking up another stage (and the KoM?) and Emu dropping down the GC. "Make it so number one!"

Is there a special award for picking the GC guy who catches Covid?

Technically, the top ten hasn't changed.  BitB gains one point on Search that would make him joint 10th, except for the tiebreaker rule that keeps him 11th.

Arensman loses 20 minutes + and 6 places.  Might make more difference to managers here than it does to him...

Yes, they do.  Surprisingly, only Vladimir really seems to have suffered from Carapaz's fading in the last few km today.

Any final twists have only 17 km in which to happen.

Stage 21 Final Pink points update

Other than the stage points, there were no changes in the Mountains or Points classifications, very little in GC (Carthy taking 9th from Lopez being the most significant), and not even a pink jersey bonus.  Less consequential than a mass sprint.

Enhorabuena to Josedin (I think he is one of our Spanish contingent)

Congratulations also to Velorooms, whose members came 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th, setting up a victory by 1237 to 1107

I am not working tomorrow, so I will do a bit of numbers breakdown then.  If you can't wait that long to pour over your successes and failures, here is the spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11haWffZm_Bng3kfcbo5lpPJSlyfL0cEh?rtpof=true&authuser=kevinmce63%40gmail.com&usp=drive_fs)

Thanks to all who have joined in, to the riders, and to CQ and PCS for the results services.

Before the usual analysis, and inspired by Samu's question about a team based entirely on Israel PT riders, here are the team performances.  Only UAD were overbudget, and many used a very small proportion of what we were allowed.

2      Bahrain      3311      284      1065

Purple points top scorers
Stage points only: stage winners or equivalents

DEMARE Arnaud      272      1
VAN DER POEL Mathieu      180      6
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam      160      4
HINDLEY Jai      151      7
BOUWMAN Koen      150      0
YATES Simon      140      18
CAVENDISH Mark      130      0
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      122      5
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago      120      0
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio      102      7
DAINESE Alberto      97      1
CICCONE Giulio      95      9
HIRT Jan      95      0
ARENSMAN Thymen      92      11
KÄMNA Lennard      86      12
SOBRERO Matteo      85      0
LEEMREIZE Gijs      79      1
MOLLEMA Bauke      78      0
DE BONDT Dries      75      1
COVI Alessandro      70      0
DE GENDT Thomas      70      3
OLDANI Stefano      70      0

I've already put up the final stage points table, but here are the top ten with their top three contributors (and any other 70 point plus riders)

1      Josedin      618   Demare/Carapaz/Arensman/De Gendt
2      Kazistuta      562   Yates/Gaviria/Ciccone/Kamna
3      Leadbelly      556   Hindley/Yates/Ciccone/Kamna
4      AmisVelo      512   Hindley/Yates/Ciccone
5      Rote_Laterne      508   Hindley/Yates/Kamna
6      ZigzagWanderer      484   Girmay/Yates/Arensman
7      Comodoro      483   Hindley/Yates/Gaviria
8      Northerner      474   Hindley/Yates/Arensman
9      EvansIsTheBest      454   Van der Poel/Ciccone/Ewan
10      Rufs      445   Van der Poel/Ciccone/Ewan

Part of the reason for doing the minor classification is to provide interest for those who are not going to be competitive in the Main Game.  Josedin rather undermines that by winning both, but Kazistuta, Zigzag and Evans were not in the top ten in that, and Leadbelly and Amis Velo both do considerably better here.

And if anyone had wanted to target this classification alone, the best they could have done (I think) is
DEMARE Arnaud
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam
HINDLEY Jai
BOUWMAN Koen
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago
CICCONE Giulio
LEEMREIZE Gijs
on a spend of 3490, to score 1149 purple points (and an 'accidental' 2205 in the main game).

Pink points

When we include all the CQ points available (not only the GC or pink jersey bonuses: pink points are what I call our main classification), the top scoring riders are:
HINDLEY Jai      676      7 teams
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio      587      7
DEMARE Arnaud      357      1
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro      356      1
LANDA MEANA Mikel      346      27
HIRT Jan      311      0
NIBALI Vincenzo      285      3
BOUWMAN Koen      284      0
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello      273      1
VAN DER POEL Mathieu      264      6
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago      235      0
BUCHMANN Emanuel      197      5
CICCONE Giulio      189      9
CARTHY Hugh      184      18
POZZOVIVO Domenico      182      4
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando      177      5
CAVENDISH Mark      170      0
ARENSMAN Thymen      166      11
KÄMNA Lennard      161      12
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam      160      4
YATES Simon      140      18
VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro      134      0
MOLLEMA Bauke      130      0
LEEMREIZE Gijs      127      1
DAINESE Alberto      122      1
COVI Alessandro      116      0
KELDERMAN Wilco      115      3
HAMILTON Lucas      109      3
MARTIN Guillaume      106      1
SOBRERO Matteo      100      0

Of course, an expensive pick who scores highish might not be a great pick, so Percentage return on investment
HAMILTON Lucas   311   3
DE GENDT Thomas   283   3
NOVAK Domen   200   0
HINDLEY Jai   186   7
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro   185   1
LEEMREIZE Gijs   125   1
ARCAS PEÑA Jorge   114   0
CHEREL Mikael   114   0
BUCHMANN Emanuel   111   5
BOUWMAN Koen   92   0
HIRT Jan   88   0
LANDA MEANA Mikel   88   27
KÄMNA Lennard   88   12
TONELLI Alessandro   85   1
HEPBURN Michael   85   2
NIBALI Vincenzo   83   3
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago   75   0
KLUGE Roger   75   0

Of course, the logical conclusion to the idea of value is that a cheaper rider and spare points in the budget can be a wiser pick than spending to the limit.  But if you had chosen 7 favourite riders to a total cost of 1948, would you have had the courage to pick Hindley over Carapaz and send in a team that had only cost 2311 points?
Impeccable picks are those who you could not have scored better than with a rider who cost more.
HINDLEY Jai
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro
KÄMNA Lennard
LEEMREIZE Gijs
HAMILTON Lucas
DE GENDT Thomas
HEPBURN Michael

As in the purple points classification, I won't repeat the whole table from yesterday, but the top ten with their 100+ scorers:
1      Josedin      1772   Carapaz/Demare/Landa/Carthy/Arensman
2      Search      1667   Carapaz/Landa/Carthy/Pozzovivo/Gaviria/Kamna
3      BluesInTheBottle      1645   Hindley/Carapaz/Ciccone/Kamna
4      Rote_Laterne      1613   Hindley/Landa/Buchman/Kamna/Yates
5      Northerner      1595   Hindley/Landa/Buchman/Arensman/Yates
6      Leadbelly      1581   Hindley/Landa/Ciccone/Kamna/Yates
7      Comodoro      1560   Hindley/Landa/Carthy/Gaviria/Yates
8      Vladimir      1549   Carapaz/Nibali/Buchmann/Ciccone/Arensman
9      AmisVelo      1461   Hindley/Landa/Ciccone/Yates
10      Manafana      1406   Hindley/Landa/Carthy/Yates

Best possible team
with all my usual qualifiers about this being based on a fairly limited numbers of tries, and that better combinations may be possible.
HINDLEY Jai
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
LOPEZ PEREZ Juan Pedro
LANDA MEANA Mikel
HIRT Jan
NIBALI Vincenzo
BUCHMANN Emanuel
LEEMREIZE Gijs
at a cost of 3475 and earning 2885

Josedin's double winning team
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
DEMARE Arnaud
LANDA MEANA Mikel
CARTHY Hugh
ARENSMAN Thymen
DE GENDT Thomas
BALLERINI Davide
HEPBURN Michael

Only Ballerini can be said to have been a real flop here.  Hepburn was not the best cheap Aussie makeweight he could have afforded (that would have been Hamilton), but at least he finished and even picked up a couple of stage points at the death.  I will admit to having thought that this team will go nowhere when I saw a big spend on Demare in a field that included Ewan, Cavendish, Gaviria and Girmay, but it is good to see a brave unique pick be rewarded (and also demonstrates the sort of insight that earned me 15th place).
If my Best Possible team is correct, this is 61.4% of what is possible: every time I do such a calculation the winner is in the low to mid sixties of what might have been done.

Hall of shame
Riders who were selected at a cost of 400 points or more, but who returned less than 10% of their cost, with the difference between their score and their price.
ALEOTTI Giovanni      -391      1
POELS Wout      -489      1
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel      -507      20
DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David      -549      1
BARDET Romain      -877      5
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves      -1578      1

And finally, to give comfort to some, the Bad  luck table, sorted by number of non-finishers, then by the difference between what those non-finishers cost and the points they may have gained before withdrawal.
Laarsland      5      1342
ZigzagWanderer      4      2476
Del1962      4      2121
Rote_Laterne      4      2079
AmisVelo      4      2079
DJSprtsch      4      1554
Triley36      3      2219
Scrooll07      3      2219
SlowClimber      3      1954
JumboVismaFan      3      1954
Northerner      3      1761
Leadbelly      3      1761
Bonimenier      3      1702
EvansIsTheBest      3      1551
Bminchow      3      1487
Otoxiep87      3      1406
Mellow_Velo      2      1896
Manafana      2      1482
Will10      2      1447
Comodoro      2      1342
SafeBet      2      1342
Kazistuta      2      1254
Nyssinator      2      1254
ArchieBoy      2      1254
Armchair_Cyclist      2      1153
Yellow_Knight      2      926
Rufs      2      737
BluesInTheBottle      2      671
Salvarani      1      877
Titan31      1      721
RedheadDane      1      549
Berflamand      1      507
Vladimir      1      419
SamuCuenca      1      217
Search      1      164
Josedin      0      0
BicycleBoy      0      0
Collective_Wisdom      3      1761
which perhaps makes Rote Laterne's 4th place more commendable.

And even finalier, the standings after two rounds of the Four Seasons challenge (ie totals for those who contested both this and the Spring Classics game, Tour and Vuelta to follow).
1      Josedin      2847
2      Search      2769
3      Leadbelly      2757
4      AmisVelo      2661
5      Comodoro      2653
6      BluesInTheBottle      2588
7      Rufs      2499
8      Rote_Laterne      2496
9      Kazistuta      2462

12      Vladimir      2378
13      Triley36      2305
14      Otoxiep87      2296
15      Armchair_Cyclist      2261
16      SlowClimber      2228
17      Berflamand      2128
18      Del1962      2081
19      Salvarani      2001
20      Bminchow      1949
21      JumboVismaFan      1755
22      BicycleBoy      1702
23      Mellow_Velo      1625
24      Scrooll07      1623
25      DJSprtsch      1320
26      RedheadDane      752
      Collective_Wisdom      2268

And remind me to tell you on around 23rd June that the Tour de France CQ Game should be 8 riders with a maximum budget of 4000 points as of 26th June, to be confirmed from a CQ update on the 27th, and that you'll need to submit teams by whatever time the first rider goes down the ramp in Copenhagen on 1st July.

Now, Emerging riders games...
