Tour of Lombardy (253 km)
« on: September 28, 2022, 15:51 »

The 2022 Tour of Lombardy will be held on Saturday 8 October. The route has been unveiled last Tuesday, 27 September. There is good news from my viewpoint. The Fallen Leave Classic is back to Como with a start in Bergamo (the town of the late Felice Gimondi was the finish of last year's race). Besides, RCS decided to do without the Sormano in the descent of which current World Champion Remco Evenepoel frighteningly crashed in 2020.

Spoiler (hover to show)

(Picture in spoiler as it can shock sensitive souls)

The Sormano was not on last year's route as it doesn't fit with a route ending in Bergamo but for a route to Como, it looks like a deliberate choice made by the organisers. Personally, I believe that crashes are an unfortunate part of racing but crashes in the Sormano descent  have been repetitive for the last decade (Philippe Gilbert in his rainbow Jersey #rainbow in 2012, Laurens De Plus and Jan Bakelants with his bike hanging on a tree in 2017). The Civiglio is back. Its descent is equally technical and even dangerous but at least the ascent of the Civiglio looks more common to me. Its return means that the route is no longer biased towards climbing specialists but more complete riders have a shot at it.

The only thing that is needed now is that RCS change back the ugly official name "Il Lombardia" back to "Il Giro di Lombardia" (in English : "The Tour Lombardy"). This name doesn't mean anything. In Italian "Lombardia" is a feminine noun, so "La Lombardia" and the idea that the name "Giro di ..." would put some shadow to their sacrosanct "Giro d'Italia" is ludicrous. Other races also exist : "Giro di Piemonte" or "Giro del Lazio", they also changed their names as "Gran Piemonte" or "Roma Maxima". These people have no sense of tradition ...  :angry

This Tour of Lombardy will be raced without the brand new World Champion Remco Evenepoel who is racing Binche-Chimay-Binche instead. Actually, new World Champions are rarely fit for the Tour of Lombardy. Oscar Camenzind is still the only World Champion to win the Tour of Lombardy after the Worlds have been moved to September (but his performances have an asterisk, we know why)[1]. However defending champion Tadej Pogačar will be present along with Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Vingegaard.

It will also be the last race for local favourite Vincenzo Nibali after a 17-year career in which he won all three Grand Tours, Milan Sanremo and this very Tour of Lombardy twice in 2015 and 2017.

So Mathieu van der Poel eventually pulls out of the race and will race the first edition of the World gravel championship in Veneto instead (on Sunday), with quite a huge field (Davide Ballerini, Greg Van Avermaet, Zdenek Stybar, Lilian Calmejane, Gianni Vermeersch) : https://www.velonews.com/news/gravel/uci-gravel-world-championships-start-list-revealed/

David Gaudu, Simon Yates and Thibaut Pinot are also out with injuries or sickness.
