The 2024 Auto-Wildcard Race
« on: November 25, 2022, 13:45 »
Not quite the only competition in town in 2024 as the next 3-yr cycle also begins of the 2026 WT Race. However since that is only the first year of three, much more attention should focus on this battle for the time being.

Here are the points from 2022 for some of the teams.

 #lotto 6941
 #total 6142
 #israel 4866
 #unox 2940
 #bbhotels 2502
 #bingoal 1909
 #bolton 1894
 #eolo 1796
 #vlaanderen 1775

I've gone down further than is probably necessary. The struggles at B&B will likely mean that this is just a 4 way battle.

Who's your money on?

It's the last working Friday afternoon of the year, so of course there's a UCI press release:
    https://www.uci.org/pressrelease/modification-of-points-scale-for-mens-events-in-uci-international-road/2YPy6zPPse6w8c5s9J0dKd

    1) new point scales, giving more points for GTs, Monuments, individual stages, Worlds, and Olympics
    2) World Ranking will now include points from 20 riders per team (instead of 10)

1 makes sense, adjusting the points given for the highest-prestige races and making stage wins more important.
I haven't thought much about 2 yet, but I guess it will result in the teams with lots of budget (and therefore a deep bench) never getting even close to relegation because their 11th-20th riders are so much better than the 11th-20th riders of less financially-gifted WT teams, not to mention ProTeams.

I've written down some thoughts about the third change in the 2023 thread:
    Quote
    3) Israel-Premier Tech receive automatic invitations to not only the WT one-day races, but the WT stage races (except GTs) in 2023, too!

It's different: is it better?  3rd, 4th and 6th on stages beats a place on the overall podium here (Matthews ahead of Bilbao), and a 4th and a 5th outscores overall 4th.  Hmmm
