Once she made that decision, she said that the Australian squad became an obvious candidate. “As I considered the bigger teams, ORICA-AIS stood out,” she continued. “The girls on the team clearly work well together, and they have demonstrated that they’re not scared to take risks in order to win big. Their way of racing fits my personal style, so my heart felt this was right. The team stands on stable ground, and it’s a bonus to be backed by the men’s team and Cycling Australia too.”

USA Cycling (USAC) has announced the creation of a formal women’s professional team structure for the 2013 US national calendar. The initiative, which USAC describes as “groundbreaking”, will give women riders the opportunity to ride the new women’s race at the Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships, which will move to Chattanooga, Tennessee, on May 25-27 next year.

In line with many races - across all disciplines - in the US calendar, men and women will be racing for equal prize money at the event. All women that took part in the 2012 national championships in Augusta, Georgia, will be eligible to race in Chattanooga, providing their team is registered as a domestic elite team.

The team looks “to give a positive impulse to the development of young cycling talents,” it said on its website. It features Dutch women Karen Elzing, Alie Gercama, Laura van der Kamp, Anouska Koster and Mascha Pijnenborg, who rode together this year for Dolmans-Boels Cycling Team. They will be joined by Janine van der Meer, who rode the junior road race in the world championships, and newcomer Mirthe Wagenaar.

Two German riders will join the team, Stephanie Pohl (European points champion) and Sarah Lena Hoffman. Frenchwoman Aurore Verhoeven is also on the team. One or two more riders may join the team.

That is the issue BYOP due to coverage you only get to see the best

Sarah Connolly ‏ @_Pigeons_ might be a good one to follow on twitter

    So we have Vos

    then Evelyn Stevens

    Emma Jonahsson

probably the 3 biggest names for 2013

what I do is follow a team or 2

I will be looking at ORGE womens, the new team http://velorooms.com/womens-road-cycling/dtpc-honda-the-new-home-for-the-british-women's-peloton/  and Specialized lululemon

plus there is a few OZ Chloe Hoskings, https://twitter.com/Bridie_OD and https://twitter.com/rochellegilmore

not sure that helps but by following those teams yet get to follow some riders.

I also have a soft spot for Ina Teutenberg no idea why, and after last years WC 2 riders I will keep and eye on are  Anna Van Der Breggen and Rachel Neylan

but the issue is press you only here about Stevens and of course Vos and some Johansson especially now Armstrong and Arndt have retired

and ofc Pooley and Trott from GB

    well thats a start

    and 1 more Anna Neben

    Nice interview with Vos: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/20551012

Re female cyclists worth following, I'm looking forward to seeing what Longo Borghini can do this year - finished 3rd behind Vos at the World's and is only 20.  Very promising indeed.

Now that I have some more time for a more serious answer. Vos is the great winner of the sport, but besides her there's a few other noteworthy riders. As DotP said, Elisa Longo Borghini is perhaps the biggest talent currently active (and a personal favourite of mine). She's a good all-rounder, with promise for both stage races (white jersey in Giro Donne) and one-day races (3rd at the Worlds). Bronzini is another Italian who shouldn't be forgotten: beating Vos to win the WC twice in a row is seriously impressive.

Then there's the Brits. Pooley, though she will apparently take a step down next year, is still one of the bigger riders in the women's peloton. Without Vos, she would have won a great lot of races. Nicole Cooke has a nice palmares as well, but didn't quite seem to have it the last 2 years. Armitstead is the future of British road cycling: 23 years old and fresh from the track, yet already winner of Gent-Wevelgem and runner-up at the Olympics.
Always there to help Vos and still occasionally finding a chance to win on her own (such as the 2011 Ronde van Vlaanderen) is Annemiek van Vleuten. Though in everyday competition in different teams, at the Olympics and Worlds Vos was further helped by Ellen van Dijk and Loes Gunnewijk, two more great Dutch riders. Though at the Worlds, the best helper for Vos was undoubtedly the amazing Anna van der Breggen.

There's a few Americans who are always dangerous in races: Evelyn Stevens and the fast Amber Neben, but also the brilliant ITT'er and double Olympic TT champion Kristin Armstrong.
Some other notable names include German veteran Teutenberg, Emma Johansson for Sweden, Danish/Kiwi Linda Villumsen and Australia's Rachel Neylan.

That should cover most of the important names I think, though I may have missed some.

Heard rumours that Cycling South Africa won't sponsor a women's team. If true it is dying fast round those parts.

From my limited knowledge of women's cycling, surely that's not a good sign. Maybe the UCI need to get more active in supporting female cycling and not worry about the $$$$$$ in asia.

Not at all, the biggest and only real long stage race of the year imo
