I don't know about Australia, but in Denmark the rider going left would have to ride on the extreme right, then first cross straight, and then take to the space in front of the pedestrian crossing to cross when it clears to go straight again.
And that is a rule that took me some getting used to. From Germany, I was used to just using the car lanes when turning left - and I still do it in rural areas. It's out of the question in Copenhagen of course.
