Interesting article.

A 1x11 gear setup seems to have merits if the terrain isn't too varied - crits, flat races with next to no hills etc.

But I think it won't become widespread, for one reason: Pros won't ride it.
And the average race bike buyer won't want things that pros don't ride: Triple chainrings are almost anathema, compacts are only slowly getting accepted (but still eyed warily), and everybody wants a 53x11 on their bike - because 'the pros have it'. A thorough analysis of time spent in various gears would be interesting, and probably surprise a lot of people.

The purchase of a race bike often has little to do with reason. That's not necessarily bad; we need some things in life that aren't economised through-and-through.

Disclaimer: I run a 52-40-30 triple[1] with a ten-speed 12-25 cassette on my bike.
