Gent Six Day, 20-25 November 2012

Mrs L'arri reminded me yesterday that we went to the Gent Six Day track event in 2008 when we'd not long been in Belgium. I'd completely forgotten about it. That year, Iljo Keisse (now OPQS) and Robert Bartko beat Erik Zabel and Leif Lampater.

Anyway, there's talk of us going again this year. Mrs L'arri very much enjoyed the Olympic omnium, as did I. Anyone who's not done a Six Day event should try one! I always wish they'd turn down the lights a bit, but it's a cool evening out anyway.

This year, all being well, I'll be covering the event here on VR anyway, to lighten your low season moods!  ;D

I've been to the Copenhagen sixdays in February 2011. The velodrome is in Ballerup actually, a suburb of Copenhagen.
The year before I'd been to the track worlds in the same venue, and I have to say I like such a meeting better.

Of course the fact that it were the very best track riders there are, and not a combination of some sixday specialists (very good ones, mind you - Bartko, Lampater, van Bon etc.), Danish hometown favourites and up-and-coming youngsters, played a part as well.
But the sixdays event wasn't quite what I expected either. I understood they are mostly built around madison races, but in the two days I went there I didn't see a single "real" madison race... :fp
They had what was proclaimed to be a madison race several times, but it was basically a scratch race with the pairs taking turns - there was only a sprint at the end. Not what I came for, and far from the intrigue of the madison race at the 2010 track worlds, with sprints every 10 laps.

Will be interesting this, Keisse and O'Shea duo must be the favourite for the winner, but there are quite a few who are in with a shout..

It seems like it may be a battle between Keisse/O'shea and Ketele/Van Koecke..

Here is what Keisse said about the event, he seems to be pretty upbeat for it and certainly would not like to lose after his preparation.

    Quote
"We have a very nice field assembled here," Keisse said to Het Nieuwsblad. "I expect a battle between the world champions Kenny De Ketele / Gijs Van Hoecke and myself with the Australian Glenn O'Shea. As outsiders, the Dutch team of Peter Schep and Wim Stroetinga will also be balanced."

Though Schep/Stroetinga have seemed to have struggled a bit..
Edit: Got 2nd now though in Team points

    Quote
wo streakers disrupted the Gent six day on Wednesday night, forcing organisers to delay the race programme while the two were held by Belgian police.

According to a report in Het Laatste Nieuws, the two streakers jumped onto the track during the musical interval and ran around the track naked.

Must have been chaos but also rather entertaining :D
