Ugliest helmet of 2012
« on: September 30, 2012, 19:52 »
Anyone else see these hideous Giro Air Attacks and think they're a a) step backward in cranial styling and b) hideous disgrace to those who wear them?

Roll up folks and get that pre-1990 look for only RRP $200:

I can't find a photo of it but the Movistar helmet with the holes filled in (if that makes sense).  I love the look of Catlike helmets normally, but the 'all in one' was really fugly.

God I hated those Bell bin lids. Bloody awful they were.

    John ruddy Tomac wearing one:

Also despised these. Coincidentally also modelled by 7-Eleven. Stand up, Bob:

I still see them now and again, or perhaps they are modern versions of them. I'm glad to hear they paid you to wear them - that's the only saving grace - but I bet you ended up with an itchy head.

So had Bell not paid you would you have ridden without a helmet or one of those crappy sponge strip helmets that did nothing for you? (For those who don't know them or called them something else, there are a couple being modelled behind John ruddy Tomac above). I was probably in the first generation of lads who always and only wore "hard" hats. My first was this very one in blue:

I used to hedge my bets (probably foolishly in hindsight...) and chuck my helmet in the team car. If I was up in the final or it was a dodgy finish I'd nip back and get it... quite a few of the boys used to do that, so it was nothing to see a domestique with half a dozen 'Danish' style helmets stuffed up his jersey! Never tried it with more than one hardshell though! :)

This may sound quite strange now, but when I first turned pro, and even my last season as amateur the predominant helmet in the peloton (when you had to wear one, which wasn't always) was the 'softshell' or 'Danish' and I never felt unsafe wearing one. It was only after 1990 and being sponsored to wear a hardshell, that when I did ride a softshell I felt unsafe and quite nervous.

Anyone remember these bloody foam rubber Rudy Project things that (I think) Lampre rode??? Now they were f**king woeful!
