One of my fave musical groups ever, brilliant, creative, collabarative, and perhaps just a little too cool for mainstream consumption - they have kinda disappeared off the radio & TV but are still going today (@BV3G)

Bran Van 1st appeared on my radar in 1998 with this:

'Drinkin' in LA' - bit of a slow burner, but supercool... http://t.co/ZgskLxoy

And then the 'Discosis' album was released in 2002 - it is quite a wild ride - I absolutely love it - one of my best of all time - spent one of the best Summers of my life to this soundtrack - and this album still rocks my world today. The 1st track - a more poppy tune than the rest of them - is a collaboration with legend Curtis Mayfield, they were lucky enough to do this before he passed away - 'Astounded' - very uplifting - and check out the nice 'Latin flava' mixed in at the end - a taste of what is to follow...

I have often tried to figure out exactly what it is that Bran Van does, which genre they slot into, but over time I have come to realise that they defy definition.. And I kinda totally LOVE that.

The next track that really stands out and is one of my faves, is 'Montreal' - featuring well known & brilliant Senegalese artist Youssou N'Dour.

Fun & funky, there are the most awesome Muppets references: "See Kermit the Frog was one day daydreaming, thinking about himself at a red light, with that it-ain’t-easy-being-greenin' and the cars behind him kept honking and honking - and Kermit’s last words as he flipped the bird, was 'Damn you Muppets just keep on taking!'"

It also truly is an alternative modern love song, and reflects the times we live in: "I think I love to watch you laughing, in fact I love to watch you do anything, and yes I do feel this thing happening, but you’ll have to excuse me girl 'cause my taxi’s waiting, although I do, yes I do I love you in my own twisted ways"

'Go Shoppin' Bran Van 3000 ft. Eek-A-Mouse - some cool rap and an awesome beat - some good clubbing in Cape Town back in the day right there

I am a huge BV3 fan. I have all the albums prior to The Garden. Cheesy at times but I always seem to let them off. Di Salvio constructs proper albums that hang together really well in a way that has become increasingly rare in a singles-driven culture.

As I mentioned before, with all the different musical styles mishmashed together, haphazard, disjointed bits&pieces that somehow come together in the end in a musical superspectrum - this album is a wild ride - in this song the trip becomes a llittle bit more literal: "She was lost in a flood, Mary, queen of Arkansas, dreaming of a cadillac ranch with a hungry heart. But most of all she was born in the USA, Ashbury park, New Jersey, inner state babe. To be exact she was her own rock and roll video, Rolls Royce, low riding, speed climbing, driving by the sea, making mad love on other people's private property, while being on the run from the local law for unpaid parking tickets.."

     Funny. Very cool. http://t.co/oAqrwREb

This song - wow - powerful stuff - 'Stepchild' feat Badar Ali Khan - this is one of THE highlights on 'Discosis' for me:

    http://t.co/KpzROdpY

"Do you ever wish you were somebody else?
    All the time.
    Why, don't you like yourself?
No, it's not that. I mean it's just not what you thought it would be. I mean, my old man, he used to sit and he'd go, 'I don't know.' I mean, he'd just be sitting there and he'd say, 'I don't know'. And I'd say, 'What daddy? What don't you know?' And he'd say, 'I don't know'. Have you ever thought that you'd go, 'I don't know, I don't know' And I guess you never do figure it out.

    Don't you like yourself?

No, it's not that. I guess, in some way, you fliped up. In some way down the line, something went wrong and you spend the rest of your life trying to figure it out"

My all-time favourite is probably Supermodel from Glee but I really dig Sex, Love and Peace on Rosé, which is sort of pop music made with prog rock values.

Awesome track - think I saw somewhere that you're from
Belgium.. A friend of mine did her M in Law there, exchange program with Stellenbosch Uni - she said the Belgian clubs were off the hook!

I'm British but I live in Belgium. "Off the hook" is not a phrase I would use to describe the scene here, but I think I'm too old to enjoy clubs without having higher expectations. As with everything, one tends to value what one did years ago and I tend now to find it hard to see most clubs as anything other than a sort of commercial hit-and-run.  :D

    My all-time favourite

Mine is 'Love Cliche' - not because it's their best, but because it's another one of those modern alternative love songs that I have a penchant for - it is also unapologetic, a total riot, and a celebration - that Summer I fell hopelessly & utterly in love with a man & he with me - our love was a total cliche, and we knew it, but we didn't care - and this was our song :-)

    http://t.co/bYeKUKVm

"Ba ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba, ba ba ba ba
    Ba ba ba

You see I met her on a monday
    And her name was chill
    From the what-the-hell family's
    Relation to free will
    Yeah she circled my circumference
Said she had some time to kill
Been combing the beach for a beautiful freak
And I just might fit the bill
    She said:

Ooh, I think I'm liking you
Ooh, do you feel the same way too?
    I said, ooh, I think I do
    I said, ooh, I think you're cute
    I said, ooh, merci beaucoup
    I said, ooh ooh
And maybe I'm calling you baby
And I might just say you're my love cliche

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

So we fell in love that summer
    Underneath the star wars sign
    Drinking cases of each other
    And guitar and april wine
And we lay down in the alley
As the sunlight hit the pine
And talked of all things great
Like the rose of gertrude stein
And we fell in love that summer
    But it lasted eighteen weeks
Used to kiss her on the hummer
Now I kiss her on the cheek
    And I vividly remember
    In a moment of recline
When she whispered in my ear
"i think I like both kinds"
    [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bran+van+3000/love+clich_20023560.html ]
She said, ooh, I think I do
    I said, ooh, I think you're cute
    She said, ooh, merci beaucoup
    I said, ooh ooh
    And maybe I'm chasing amy
And I might just say you're my love cliche

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love

    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love
    I'm feeling love

So why don't you tell me what's great?

When the puck hits the net
    At the stanley cup game
    And miles hits the notes
When he sketches out of spain
And the wedding gets you high
    From the perfect catering
    And love makes you lie
Even though you bought the ring
And you screw with your spine
    And the minor chord change
    And the more things change
The more they stay the same
But I'm looking for your kind
Yeah I'll drive through the driving rain
    'cause what was so wrong
    From the very beginning
That we would have to change

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
    You're my love cliche
And I like it that way

And maybe I'm calling you baby,
And I might just say you're my love cliche

    I'm in love
    I'm in love
    I'm in love

    I'm in love
    I'm in love
    I'm in love"
