BBC Sports Personality of the Year
« on: November 27, 2012, 13:13 »
It's that time again... the time when TV networks around the world start splicing together footage of the year's events to celebrate the winners and losers, highs and lows, ups and downs of the past 12 months.

In the UK, one of the more prominent nostalgia-fests is the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award. The winner is chosen by public vote from a shortlist of 12, but I thought we should get ahead of the game. On the list are 8 Olympic medallists, 3 Paralympic medallists and the world Golf no. 1. Their collective achievements are mind blowing, and the historic impact that some of them have made will be recorded forever - Wiggins is the first British winner of the Tour de France and the first British Olympic men's road cycling medallist*. Nicola Adams won the inaugural gold in Olympic women's boxing.

Equally significant, I would argue, are those missed off. In an Olympic year, it's natural that there would be some missing out. "Queen" Victoria, and her heir-apparent Laura Trott don't make the shortlist. Nor do any members of the world number 1 Cricket team, nor the Triathlon medal-winning brothers Jonny and Alastair Brownlee.

Make your own mind up and cast your vote. And if you care to, cast your vote in the real thing on December 16th.

You Brits had an amazing year. Though I migh be biased towards cycling, I think Wiggins deserves it. He has done what no Brit has ever done before: winning the Tour de France. Plus winning the Olympic ITT gold, Paris-Nice, Dauphiné, etc. Plus, I'd really like to hear his victory speech ;D

Any other year, the achievements of someone like Ennis, Farah or Murray would have meant a sure victory, but this year there's just so much to choose from.

    Oh me too ;D

And I agree - coming second amongst that list would not be at all shameful.

A fairly bitchy look at previous winners of the award

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/9706006/BBCs-weakest-SPOTY-winners-in-pictures.html#?frame=2411027

Already a number of cyclists, hence no Laura Trott; her time will surely come.

Correct me if I am wrong but surely this must be between Murray, Wiggins and Farah
Mcilroy as well tbh though golf fever may be at a low. Though his achievement in dominating his sport does surpass any of the others on that list.

Rory for me. PGA tour and European tour money lists, a major, a Ryder cup winning team member and five tournament wins overall. That is fantastic. Oh yes, 3 WGC top 10s too.

It was crazy that Donald lost to Cav last year, and the lack of a major was cited as a reason. Rory won't win, but he deserves it as much as anyone.

The golfing vote was split last year between Clarke, Donald, Mcilroy hence no golfer winning.

And I hope the the Brit dressage horses win team of the year this time.. It might go a long way from saving them from the glue factory.

Cavendish got 49% of the vote, it didn't matter who else was from what sport, he would have won it anyway.

Think Wiggins will win, and want him to.  Although a part of me hopes that either Storey or Weir at least make it into the top 3, that would be excellent.  Farah to round out the podium,

Prior to deleting his first account, Brad had 640,165 followers.
Then he returned and by the middle of the Tour he had around 315,000 followers

Cath had around 5,000 followers first time round, left, came back and was up to about 10,000 followers during Michelle-Gate. And then left shorly after Brads one finger salute the press when he came out of hospital.

Judging by amount of air time their achievements got in international media, and by international media I mean Norwegian media  ::) , the clear winner is Wiggins followed by Murray, McLlroy and Farah/Ennis. I think I heard sir Hoy mentioned once, but that might be me misremembering watching some British show.

GBR had an amazing year and some spectacular games, congrats!
My top 3 would be; 1. Wiggins 2. Farah 3. Murray

One thing though is that last couple of years the winner won by a rather clear margin.
This year I believe it will be rather different and pretty type, maybe even a down to the wire occasion. Have not watched enough of these to know if its a regular occurrence but doubt it is.

Though problem about including additional two to the shortlist means that it will be even more embarassing for those surplus two when nobody votes for them.. :D

Interviewing a bunch of sportpeople such as Addlington who does not have a clue as to who a couple of the contenders are.. and yet are asked to their opinion of the bunch  :fp
The whole thing just smells fake and done up, but  :-X

And also the Duchess herself will be gracing the event:

The whole thing blown out of all proportions..

"It's been amazing - a good steady year. The last part of it was amazing, with the Ryder Cup and winning the WGC."
Now why is that particular athlete not one of the nominees..

Really happy to see Brailsford win coach of the year. :pray

Whatever some obscure people over on the other side may say.. the fact is that his success is close to unparalleled in current sport and is actually rather ridiculous when considering it in context.

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

From what I have seen so far Farah has been nationwide accepted and is generally adored by all. It is mostly down to his personality that I want him to win, though tbh imo his achievement is unparalleled by anyone besides possibly Wiggins..

What wiggins did was better. So if farah wins considering he was not born in Somalia people will say its the media trying to sell.immigration . Especially since farah has been taken up as a utopian icon of immigration. For example the other day on question time one of the panelists started going on about farah during a question on immigration instead of answering the question. And this is a very decisive issue in this country.

Ah, it is sad that it would come to that and I would have thought that after the Olympics he would have been fully integrated. Especially as if he wins the public would have been the ones who would have decided that.. Guess some things never change.

In terms of what he did.. Well dominating the long distance running like that. It is Bolt like imo and considering he was British bred..Running long distance to me is the purest form of human physical capability and he is surely the best at long distance running (not marathon distances yet).
