"@Helivac_EMS: #Dakar2013 RT @ToyotaSA: Day 01  - Car 301: Giniel & Dirk 00:08:15 (+25s - 8th pos.) Car 312: Duncan & Rob 00:08:24 (+44s - 10th pos.)"

Excited to see how Giniel De Villiers fares this year - placed 1st in 2009 and finished 2nd in 2011. First stage was today, Giniel 8th overall so far.

Search, not 100% sure, but I think it is still called that, don't think it has officially changed, people refer to it differently, I used to call it Paris-Dakar all the time, but the last few years I use it less, and more often simply call it the Dakar rally.

Dakar has become the brand name for this long distance rally despite the fact that it's run on a different continent. It was moved because of terrorist activity in north Africa.

I'm following Laia Sanz, she's a 12 times world Trials champion and pretty awesome bike rider, she ride for Gas Gas

Someone who was in the same class as I was, 4 years ago, is now the youngest rider in the Dakar Rally.

Robert van Pelt, rides motor/cross. :)

I'll be trying to follow the progress of these guys.  Truly incredible story - Top Gear did a feature on them last year and it was pretty humbling stuff

    Awesome, guys!

Yeah, I heard of these guys, Jenson Button took an interest in them, saw a docu on it on telly, so cool, they were invited back to McLaren etc and JB tweets about them too.

Today's win propelled Stéphane Peterhansel to the top of the car category in the 2013 Dakar, 2'38" ahead of another former winner, South African Giniel de Villiers. Ronan Chabot and his SMG buggy (+2'46") lie third.

Argentina's Orlando Terranova and his BMW X3 (+6'26") are fourth, followed by Leonid Novitskiy (+9'33") and his Mini. Next comes Nasser Al-Attiyah's Qatar Red Bull Team buggy, with a 10'25" deficit.

Then it's Lucio Álvarez and his Toyota (+12'27") followed by Krzysztof Holowczyc and his Mini (+14'00"). Carlos Souza and his Great Wall (+15'48") are ninth and Bernard Errandonea and his SMG buggy round off the Top 10.

Aye, saw that when I got in this afternoon.  Terrible news obviously, particularly for the families and friends of the 2 who have died.  The three R2R guys are in hospital.  From the team's facebook page:

The Race2Recovery team unanimously agreed to continue the Dakar Rally with the two remaining Wildcat vehicles; 423 and 445. They are due to start on Stage 6 around 15.30 UK time. Facing challenges is what they do best. It just got harder and the whole team will work harder.

why isn't it called "Paris - Dakar" anymore?

erm, because it does not start in Paris (nor even europe), nor does it finish in Dakar (or even Africa), the Paris Dakar is now in south America.. work that one out.. totally daft..

(Dakar rally is of course owned by the Tour de France organisers ASO, and for many years Phil Liggett did the commentary :S)

Such a fantastic, inspiring, and humbling achievement!  Puts many things into perspective when you see individuals who have had limbs blown off and suffered goodness only knows what sort of mental trauma come through, and complete something like this.
