    Connery by far, then Roger Moore.

    I enjoy the 'new' bonds, with shooting, loads of action, but Ive always preferred the older Bonds more.

    The new guy. Craig, followed by Connery. Connery is the classic Bond, but I prefer the realism of Craig's character. He manages to bring the right amount of Bond 'attitude' while keeping the character a little more fallible and a little more real. The new movies are better too, well save for the middle one, not sure what happened there. The Bond series was a write-off in the 80's and 90's but has been resurrected, thanks in my opinion to Daniel Craig and the Jason Bourne trilogy.

    Connery is my favourite, all others were just trying to live up to his legacy. I am also a fan of Dalton though, I think with a few more films he could have been a brilliant Bond. Craig is quite alright as well, I like the new films almost as much as the classics.

    Only one I do not like is Brosnan. He was cursed with some terrible films, but I never liked him as a Bond even regardless of my dislike for most of his films. I still shudder at the thought of Die Another Day with its invisible cars and the horrible soundtrack by Madonna.

    I admit to being a sucker for a Bond movie.

    I own all of them on DVD so that I can watch whenever I like.  I such a sucker I even own the David Niven as Bond movie.

    Connery is the classic against which all later Bonds are measured.  That said I found Brosnan to be the one I liked the most, until the Daniel Craig movies hit.

    Craig is a good Bond.  Tough, humourless and unforgiving.  As Bond should be.

    The concept of the Bond series has been slightly changing over the years (and with every new actor) but in its core it was always meant to be about a hero who first of all loves women, casinos, fast cars and drinks and only when the duty calls he instantly (though reluctantly) leaves it all in order to save the world fighting some villain. But throughout the process of saving the world he always finds time for new relationship, card games/roulette or just having a drink and after the world is finally saved he instantly comes back to his usual life ie women, casinos, drinks and cars. Everything around him is hyperbolized: his car is (usually) Aston Martin and he rides it fast, he drinks usually in the best restaurants, if he plays a card game or roulette it must be for high stakes and of course women – the way he meets them, how they all invariably fall in love with him or their profound naivety (all of which some modern morons - with sense of humour of a telegraph pole - refer to sexism) - it draws an absolutely implausible, surreal image of his relationships. Combine all of these and it conveys the atmosphere of ease of a proper Bond movie.

    This is what the series was about in the times of Sean Connery. Then came George Lazenby and Roger Moore but though the concept of Bond remained unchanged the former took over only for one film which is too little to properly assess while the later became the absolutely worst incarnation, lacking Connery’s charms and perhaps too old (Roger Moore is actually 3 years older than Sean Connery). But this is the first phase of Bond series with my favourite films “From Russia with Love” (1963) and Thunderball (1965), of course both with Sean Connery (in fact among Sean Connery Bonds I dislike only Goldfinger, don’tknow why though).

    The second phase was about bringing back a Connery-like Bond and Timothy Dalton with Pierce Brosnan were both good in it. But Bond in those years became a little bit more emotional plus his girls became slightly ‘stronger’ though it was still a surreal world. My favourite films of that period are “The Living Daylights” (1987, Dalton) and “GoldenEye” (1995, Brosnan).

    Now came Daniel Craig and it is a significant change in series’ concept. Craig as an actor is quite OK and the films became modern. While “Quantum of Solace” is pretty much crap “Casino Royale” and “Skyfall” are great pieces of modern mainstream cinema, the movies I’ve absolutely enjoyed, but my problem is that it is not quite Bond. It became too emotional and dramatic to be a Bond movie, Craig’s Bond is more serious than previous ones, that’s perhaps made to appease to the taste of modern viewers but fact is that even cut back on some equipment of the past emotionally Craig’s Bond is like Batman (only without the costume of course) – an ordinary hero of modern cinema. That’s not bad tbh – the new films are good, but I kinda miss the good-old Bond who used to take things less seriously...

    I'm glad a couple of people have appreciated the under rated(?) Dalton as I kind of liked his films,  dislike Brosnan, Moore,  Haven't seen Daniel Craigs films as of yet but Connery is still the #1 IMO.

    Voted Connery, loved Dalton. Colder than Craig and rendered Bond definitely a -path of some sort.

    Favourite Bond was Russ Abbott:

    Ok. I've seen the Casino Royale reboot last night, it was ok not awesome but was saved by Eva Green. Why is Quantum of Solace not liked by some here?

    Also saw for the 1st time today, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It was alright. Why did Lazenby only do 1 movie to be replaced by the man whom he repalced?

    That's the matter of taste, but I remember myself leaving the cinema after "Quantum of Solace" with "that was meh" feeling and while I remember the storyline of "Casino Royale" pretty well watching it just once in the cinema, everything I can retrieve from my brains about "Quantum of Solace" is that:

    1. It was somehow about revenge (which is boring by default);
    2. In the end Bond had left some evil dude in the middle of desert with a can of oil to drink;

    (and the third one left me devastated)

    3. He didn't sleep with the main Bond girl of the film;

    :)

    __________

    Not quite sure but I read somewhere (formerly) that George Lazenby quit the series being somehow unhappy of the producer’s conduct and then they’ve paid significant money to Connery (who’d previously left after “You Only Live Twice” being somehow bored of all this Bond stuff) to bring him back for one film. But the most amazing thing is that before appointing George Lazenby for “On Her Majesty's Secret Service” producers approached Timothy Dalton (who was in his mid-twenties by that time), however the latter was a bit scared to replace Connery in such a young age.

    Roger Moore.

    He was the most fun and mastered irony like nobody else. The epitome of British phlegm. Connery was a greater actor overall but Moore was the best to impersonate 007.

    Also the best Moore character was not 007, not even Simon Templar but Lord Brett Sinclair from The Persuaders. There was an incredible spirit in that series. Great self-derision.

    This way, I don't have to post on the Best series ever thread, lol.

    Oh and the last 007 was Octopussy.  :D

    I'm with you - I actually don't mind Lazenby's film.  The fight up in the mountain resort I like.  Quantum of Solace has grown on me every time I watch it, although I accept that when I first saw it, I thought it was rubbish.

    Craig was brought in to be deliberately more 'edgy' - taking Bond back to his routes as an out and out ruthless secret agent, and of course, to compete with the Bourne franchise.  In the 21st century, I think the original ethos of what Bond 'is' has justifiably been brought bang up to date.  Otherwise, it would have become outdated/too sensationalist (invisible cars for example)- which I think it was in danger of doing with Brosnan as Bond.  Yes, the cliches and suave nature of Moore and Brosnan added to the appeal of Bond and helped to build the brand, but imho was going too far.

    Have to say, I love Ben Whishaw as Q - fantastic actor, and has an opportunity to make the role his own.

    I always thought Sean Connery was everything a Bond should ever be, and no one would better that ...

    but Daniel Craig is hot - so I voted for him    :D

    On this basis, we need a second poll for Bond girls surely?  In the name of gender equality and all that...   :P

    Quantum of Solace:
    I thought they got off to a good start - capturing Lynd's hander, good car chase with an Aston and an Alfa, uncovering corruption at MI6, exposing members of the League.... and then they fell out of a plane without chutes and lived, and lost me in the process. The finale in the desert of Bolivia (?) just wasn't interesting.

    Berenice Marlohe in Skyfall ticked several boxes for me  :D

    Although one of the downsides of the new film is that the Bond girl is only in it for about 20 minutes and gets killed off very quickly.  In the same way Connery set the standard so high for all actors playing Bond, Ursula Andress, and THAT bikini, did the same for the girls.  Personal favourites from recent times have been Rosamund Pike and Eva Green.  I've also always had a soft spot for Tania Mallet - plays Tilly Masterton in Goldfinger.  Smae she got Oddjobbed  :'(
