this is awesome indeed

and yes, the MotoGP is very strict about this, one or two years ago Anthony West received a 30 day suspension for doping. I think he even had to miss one of the post season tests :o

if anyone is interested to read how serious they actually are, this interview with Ben Spies is quite a good read:

http://motomatters.com/interview/2012/09/11/ben_spies_on_doping_in_motorcycle_racing.html

and yes, tbh I can understand athletes to be annoyed to update their location in ADAMS every 24 hours, if they are not going to be tested anyway

I guess it's one of those sports in which people often don't think of PEDs as making enough difference to be relevant.

I made comments a while back on VR, with reference to Grappe's tweetage, about WADA's one-size-fits-all approach to anti-doping. Dr Search has unearthed another great example here of how the situation doesn't really suit the sport, in this case because it's probably too much supervision.

Spies' "I don’t know for our stuff, but cycling, everybody knows that everybody does" comment is interesting in the light that he meanwhile retired from motorsports and is doing crit races in US nowadays by the way ;)

I raised an eyebrow when I read this, but in a good way. This is a bit like the ASO+AFLD hookup from back in the day, only better.

I think NAS is the single most successful organisation in the history of doping in cycling. It gets results. Cyclists racing in Italy had better take extra care.

Both participants in the main event at the most recent UFC pay-per-view tested positive.

The less well know of the two, Nick Diaz, tested positive for cannabis. He has a medical card in his home state of California which lets him legally buy cannabis to treat his ADHD.

His opponent Anderson Silva one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts right now and he tested positive for drostanolone and androsterone in an out-of-competition test a few weeks before the fight. He has previously stated in interviews that he believes fighters who test positive for steroids should be banned for life.

The owner of the Biogenesis of America clinic in Miami, who was supplying steroids and other drugs to athletes ranging from Major League Baseball pros to high-schoolers, has been convicted and sentenced to four years in prison plus three years of supervised release:

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12337083/anthony-bosch-gets-four-year-prison-sentence

He will have a chance to reduce his sentence when he testifies in the trials of some of his associates in the coming months.

Alex Rodriguez, the New York Yankees star who was banned for a year for the treatments he received from Biogenesis, has issued a mealy-mouthed weasel-word filled 'apology' to fans that doesn't actually contain any admission of PED usage or show any remorse for same

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/12337962/alex-rodriguez-new-york-yankees-issues-formal-apology-statement

He will be back on the Yankee's active roster this coming season as a designated hitter.

UFC poster-boy Anderson Silva, the 'greatest fighter of all time' according to some, has failed another drug test. It was reported shortly after his victorious comeback-from-injury fight on January 31st that he had failed an out-of-competition test on January 9th, and it has now emerged that the urine sample he gave after the fight tested positive for drostanolone, oxazepam and temazepam. It is worth noting that Silva's 19th January test was clean.

Silva will be suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday, and his disciplinary hearing will be held in March. He was initially facing a nine-month ban but this may be extended because of the second failed test.

    [edit] Update from the UFC

    Interesting points from that:
    • This move to comprehensive year-round testing leapfrogs the UFC towards the head of the pack in terms of drug testing in the USA. It certainly puts it past the NFL and probably the other three of the 'big four' (NBA, NHL, MLB) as well.
    • The article states that the UFC has only had fighters undergo out-of-competition testing 19 times (the wording of this makes it unclear whether that means 19 fighters, 19 tests, or 19 instances of a fighter being tested several times while training for a fight) and 5 of those 19 have resulted in a positive drug test.

I feel like I am the Velorooms US Sport Doping correspondent...

NBA player Chris Bosh, part of the Miami Heat team that won back-to-back championships with LeBron James a few years ago, has been sidelined for the rest of the season with blood clots in his lungs. Media coverage of his condition mentions Brooklyn Nets player Mirza Teletovic who is also missing the second half of this season with blood clots in his lungs, Cleveland Cavaliers player Anderson Varejao who missed most of the 2012-13 season with blood clots, and Miami Heat player Udonis Haslem who had blood clots in his lungs in 2010. Articles about Bosh also mention Jerome Kersey, a former Portland Trailblazers player who died last week at the age of 52 because of a blood clot in his lungs that caused an embolism.

I have yet to see a single piece of coverage that discusses why quite so many NBA players are having such bad problems with blood clots, especially since clots like these are unusual in active young men.

I Googled "blood clot lung young men" and came up with the following. It's actually quite interesting, and very extensive.

    http://www.stoptheclot.org/news/article126.htm
    Quote
    Athlete-Specific Risk Factors for Clots

Being apparently healthy and being an athlete does not prevent a person from developing blood clots. Several circumstances put the athlete, as well as the non-athlete, at increased risk for DVT and PE (table 2). Athletes, coaches and trainers should be particularly aware of these risk factors.

    - Traveling long distances to and from a sports competition (by plane, bus, or car)

    - Dehydration (during and after a strenuous sporting event)

Interestingly, the article features two separate pics of basketball players.

    Some interesting links also provided.

Recently, two studies have evaluated the risk for blood clots associated with Marathon or endurance athletes. These studies, conducted by Claire Hull, PhD, and her colleagues in the United Kingdom, appear below.

*md Alexandr Pliuschin has tested non-negative for salbutamol during the Sharjah Tour in November (which he won, riding for #skydive SkyDive Dubai).

He's been suspended by his new team #synergy Synergy Baku.

    Team statement
    Quote
The Synergy Baku Cycling Project announced that it has suspended Alexandr Pliuschin. The Moldovan rider returned a non-negative test for Salbutamol at the Sharjah Tour in Dubai while riding for the Skydive Dubai Cycling Team in November 2014.

Pliuschin has been suspended from the team in accordance with the team’s policies and strong approach to anti-doping at any level. He will remain suspended until the case is resolved.

“The team makes no exception for any rider with an adverse finding. It is our policy and we cannot deviate from it,” said team manager David McQuaid. “In Alexandr’s case it happened during an end of season race last year for another team. But the ultimate onus is on the rider himself and Alex is not disputing that it was his and only his mistake.”

“Alex has been suspended from team duties pending due process. We, as a member of the MPCC, are handling the situation within the rule framework as set down by the MPCC and remain continually committed to that.”

Synergy Baku has informed the Movement for a Credible Cycling of the incident, as required. The team has been told it will not face any sanctions as Pliuschin was not with the team at the time of the positive test.

    Horner in Colombia?

The race is on at the same time as the Larry H. Miller though, and the US Pro starts two days after it finishes, so I can only see it happening if they miss out on invites to both races.
Colombian domestic cycling is a mess. :(

Besides Saldarriaga and his #472 4-72 team I wouldn't trust anyone from there. It's telling that there were lots of snarky comments when the team couldn't find new sponsorship last fall; thankfully Postobon stepped in in February and saved the team, now called #pink Manzana Postobón.

But the other teams, the race organisers, and the national federation ... :fp
Just like in international cycling in general, the house needs to be rebuilt from the ground. But first it needs to be torn down.
