Laneways festival
« on: February 03, 2013, 04:47 »
I stumbled across the laneways festival in auckland last week and decided to go in. First time at a music festival for a very long time and had a cracking day in the sun. Mainly for Ram's sake i am setting up a playlist of the bands what i saw. I am relying on my memory but this should be in running order so matches my experience on the day

First up we local band street chant. Lots of noise and great way to kick things into life at the start of the day. Had never heard of them before but actually really enjoyed their set

Not utterly sure the links are working as video did not pop up. Maybe because i am on the mobile site. Having said above i had never heard of street chant i then found this link for a music show i have watched twice flying to nz. So slightly wrong

After street çhant i checked out the dance silo, like a dance tent but a bit more concrete, and saw another local band beach pigs. Again another high energy set with obviously a lot of local fans there to watch. Great set with a mini mosh pit going and the only crowd surf i saw

Got a bit vague at this point, i danced a bit to some djs, over heated a bit, drank a lot of water and then i think the next band i saw were this lot, but did not really get involved.

Watched a bit of 'of monsters and men' but think i got bored and wandered off to the second stage were the japandroids were playing. At this point was feeling a little tired and old and was wondering how long i would last but these guys soon got me going again

These guys were just great and put on a great set.

Think they are canadian and were probably my second favourite band on the day. Which then reminds me of the bet band who should habe between street chant and the beach pig, polica.

Quirky, cool, two drummers a base and a fantastic singer. What more could you want. Tese guys were actually the reason i went in as i was listening to their album as iwalked past the fetival and saw they were playing so went in. Love love loved them.

This is my favorite track that kind of sums up their music

at this point things got slightly quieter and i decided to go camp out at the main stage. the festival gave pass outs between 4 and 8pm so i think some people wondered out and some were just hiding from the heat. o also think a couple of bigger bands were playing the second stage so people had gone there, but was definitely quieter at the main stage which meant you could get to the front (in the shade of the stage) and get nice and close to the bands. They had a good set up where the main stage was actually two stages, so while one band was playing they were setting up for the next band on the other stage. meant no gaps and constant music. I decided to spend most of the rest of the day in the middle of those two stages.

first up where Alt-J, but missed most of their set while at the Japandriods and only saw the rest from the bar queue

Then it was time for another band i had actually heard of as had a couple of songs on spotify thanks to triple J

these guys were waaay better than the small crowd implied. the small crowd did mean i found myself jumping around alongside the singer from Polica. took all of my self restraint to not been a geek fan and tell her how wonderful she was.

good old school style rock band

then things started picking up again for the final few bands.

first up of the head line acts were yeasayer.

definitely noticed a difference in the final few acts. more professional, good show, got the crowd involved.

penultimate band were bat for lashes from brighton in Uk

i did know these guys as they have been raved about lots both in Oz and Uk and had loaded their album in spotify. although it was OK i was not totally won over by the album so was not expecting to enjoy their set that much but they were much better than i expected. I know had a front row seat (well front row stand) as i am old and need to lean against the fence and they were good enough for me to go back to their album afterwards and give ti another go

head line act were an Australian band Tame Impala. not sure how well known they are outside Oz but they are a fantastic band that have been around now. they did not disappoint and put on a great show, lots of guitars, effects, noise etc. they played around with their songs a lot, playing stuff the crowd new but making it more than just listening to songs that sounded the same as on the CD. exactly what a show should be like and great way to end the day

This is brilliant. Took an absolute era to load, but worth the wait.

    Both bands, but particularly Polica.

Will give it a listen, been without a computer for a few days so not had the chance

i have to say i am a big fan of these videos you can find on web of bands playing live at radio stations etc

there seem to be a few (live lounge in Uk, like a version in Oz, one in aus where they play on balcony, and one US one where they play in an office)

get some really great versions of songs and good way to find new bands
