For it has started...

Today saw the first pre-season testing of 2013 in Jerez.

All 11 teams ran (no HRT this year, of course), although not everyone has launched their new car (Williams, I believe, are running a development chassis with some 2012 parts and some 2013).

Fastest Lap Times

McLaren, Mercedes and Marussia had problems (fuel pump, electrical fire and suspension respectively) which limited their running. Which makes JB's time all the more impressive. Not that we can read too much into one day's testing.

It will be mostly the same drivers tomorrow, before their partners switch in for Thursday and Friday. The exception being those teams (e.g. Force India) who haven't yet announced their full line up.

    Testing Day 2

Highlight of the day was Lewis Hamilton trashing his new Mercedes early into the session. After Rosberg suffered with an electrical problem yesterday, the Silver Arrows have not been having a great start to pre-season. As for Lewis, well, there's one sure-fire way of peeing off your mechanics in your first day on the job..! :fp

Luis Razia was thrown right into the deep end; he was announced as Marussia's second driver this morning, and took his seat immediately to prop up the timesheets for the day.

    Testing Day 3

    "Ferrari's Felipe Massa fastest"

Well, 12 months ago we would never have imagined that...

In other news... Mercedes managed not to have an embarrassing failure, with Nico Rosberg clocking up 140 laps to add to Hamilton's, um... 15 yesterday. And defending champion Sebastien Vettel and former champion Kimi Raikkonen took their bows for the 2013 season.

Speaking of Kimi, Lotus are currently winning the humourous F1 tweet competition. Their official hashtag seems to be #ImSexyAndIKnowIt, and their feed from yesterday included these gems.

    Quote
...usual first day with a driver in a new car. Got to relocate the cup holders to preference and change the carpet pile density

As everyone keeps asking for him, we've interrupted our tea and banter to send Kimi out again #ImSexyAndIKnowIt #Jerez

Back to the track Kimi, Ayao needs something to watch on the monitors #ImSexyAndIKnowIt #Jerez
    and moments later...
Or maybe not. Push back, Kimi forgot his shopping list #ImSexyAndIKnowIt #Jerez pic.twitter.com/tdnwLJox

All of which comes after they released this picture of Kimi's steering wheel for the new car...

    Anyway... some numbers:

yeah, it looks like, but with relatively few changes in regulations and less room for innovations this was always the way it was expected to be

there is supposed to be rain tomorrow for the qualifying thought and the new (much softer) tyres will play a big role, especially for the first races of the season, so we should still see a couple of surprise winners over and generally interesting (though maybe confusing) races the coming weeks

by the way, the best german motorsports commentator suddenly has retired and my favorite F1 show The Flying Lap has been cancelled for a lack of money (what a joke, the costs for that show must be peanuts for everyone involved in F1 funding) - so that's not exactly a good start...

Formula 1 thread rocking, awesome, guys.

Search, we always had a popular show before F1 as build-up & they'd chat and recap and discuss stuff between qualy laps - that's been cancelled suddenly too! Also the City of Cape Town said no to a GP "too much noise"

Started liking Webber last year-ish. Now I like him even more.

Can't help thinking that if it was Schumi in Webbo's shoes somebody would've gotten a man slap or shove on the podium today :-D

PS Whathaf*ck was Alonso thinking? He should've pitted right after the 1st lap, that wing was hanging by a thread.

yeah, that was really poor sportsmanship by Vettel, at first requesting the team to get Webber out of the way and later on overtaking him while knowing that they got told to reduce engine power and cruise to the win.

generally I prefer the drivers, also teammates, to fight out their positions on track and I was disgusted to see Rosberg not being allowed to overtake Hamilton - but Vettel making use of your teammate's honesty (who believed in what the team said and did cut back engine power) in that way was really really poor.

JB did a few years ago - I think when he had just moved to McLaren.

As for the race itself, wow...  Not a fan of Vettel, and today only confirmed that opinion.  Drove like a selfish pr*ck - Horner said at the end that sometimes drivers put their own needs above that of the team, and this seemed like a classic case of that.  Although he's a good driver, he's had virtually everything handed to him on a plate, and has previous of when things don't quite go his way.  Am really hoping that Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus sort it out and push Red Bull really hard this year - I want to see Vettel implode...  :)

The Mercedes issue seemed different to me - Hamilton was having to go so slowly, and Rosberg could have passed him very easily using DRS (so not 'dangerously' like Vettel/Webber), so what was their issue?  They would still have got 3rd and 4th, so the order mattered that much?  Sucks for Rosberg if that is the case, but think Hamilton showed a bit of class at the end.

Finally, the footage from the room they sit in before going on the podium was awesome - toe curling-ly awkward, but couldn't take my eyes off the screen!

i'm not really an F1 aficienado, but i think it damages the sport that drivers aren't allowed to race their team mate. it improved the spectacle that webber and vettel were fighting, and perfectly contrasted with rosberg, not being allowed to overtake his team mate.
the sport should try to avoid processions, and on sunday, only the red bulls could compete with each other. the sport gets quite dull if the top 4 follow each other round for the last 15 laps because they're not allowed to overtake.

Happened at Silverstone (I think) last year as well.  Got as far as the pit lane exit on that occasion though before the wheel fell off (luckily before he got up to speed).  Been a bad habit of McLaren's in the last few years - silly errors that constantly undermine them.  Similar with Alonso - why did he stay out?  For all the handbags at dawn between their drivers, Red Bull seem to not make any mistakes at all...ever.  Seriously impressive when you think about it.
