The covers thread...
« on: February 13, 2013, 18:33 »
Theres some great covers, some lousy covers, some songs that are more famous for the cover version (Jealous guy is one that immediately springs to mind), so what are your favourites.

A few to kick off. Im always torn with Dylan covers, some are incredible and rework the song totally, some of frankly blashpemy and should be banned. But a couple I do like.

Which I love just for its emotion and simplicity.

Im kinda hot for Anni anyway, but she does a great job of reworking Hurricane.

The great Hallelujah debate, we all have our favourites, Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley as long as its not the messed up BS that was the X-Factor girl, but this one isnt noticed very often, John Bon Jovi, stunningly good.

    Slightly older and more obscure

and this one, most people are surprised that this song is a cover, most people are even more surprised that it was written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets, yes, as in Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

It's not hard to find some great Dylan covers because he was  the greatest songwriter in history but the poorest performer.

My favourite Don't Think Twice is Waylon's:

The Byrds - Ain't Goin' Nowhere:

When McGuinn performed the song he had one line say: "Pack up your money and pick up your tent" while Dylan's words were "Pick up your money and pull up your tent". So when he performed that song again and released it for the first time 3 years later he would say "Pick up your money and pull up your tent, McGuinn, you ain't goin' nowhere. Unfortunately that song, like Dylan's are no longer available on YT.  :pizzedoff:

However in the 80's McGuinn performed the song with the Desert Rose Band and would say "Pick up your money, and pack your tent, Dylan."  :D

    Other good Dylan covers:

*fr Hugues Aufray - La fille du Nord (Girl From the North Country)

My favourite: Forever Young by Johnny Cash. He and his musicians really put it to a new level there. :niceday

*ca The Band - When I Paint My Masterpiece

and almost all Dylan songs covered by the Byrds are hits: My Back Pages, Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Mr Tambourine Man, Lay Down Your Weary Tune, All I Really Want to Do, Chimes of Freedom ...  *usa

    HERESY!!!

He sang out of tune, lol. I think Zappa made an impression of his, deliberately singing out of tune.  :D Stephen Stills also once said that.  :D

Besides Dylan himself acknowledged the Byrds' performances of his songs were superior to his and he enjoyed writing for them or for the Band.

Barrett made a great Dylan parody (though self-penned song):

When the MSG decided to celebrate his 90th birthday Pete Seeger said : "Normally I don't believe in big things, you know. I believe the world will be saved by millions of small things."

This quote has inspired me since I heard it. Food for thought for all these Bore de France-tards.  ;)
