I would like to get a new mountain bike.
« on: March 12, 2013, 16:49 »
So currently I have a $700+ mtb that I got from Bikes Direct. Its a good bike with good parts (2012 Gravity BaseCamp 2.0) but its heavier and well I am leaning on getting something else. Now I know the really good ones are really expensive however I am going to budget it at $1,000 as I am not needing the best, just something a bit better.

I have a Trek roadie and love it and wondering if I should get a Trek mtb.

Thoughts?

Guess first question is what will you be doing with it. What sort of terrain? do you need just front suspension, front and rear?

(and if you say easy going, trails etc, i know what im going to say :D)

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Front suspension is all I need, hardtail... As far as trails, moderately technical for around here, up and down, dirt trails with lots of rocks, holes and roots. :)

But I am curious, what if I said easy going trails? :P

    What Kona Cross bike???

    I have a cheapie Cdle29r Trail I got for $700.

It's heavy and you can't flick it.  But, it's fun & rolls fast on flat terrain.

I have never rode a 29er... What difference does it make? I am 6'5" tall, would a 29er be more my speed?

People generally think taller people should be on 29ers.  I'm 6'4'' almost.
29ers---Carry momentum w/ larger heavier wheels & steamroll small bumps, also has better grip due to larger contact patch (more tire touching ground at a time).  Great for Fast less technical terrain.

26er--- lighter, nimbler to move in technical situations and quicker to accelerate.

The new thing is the 27.5 / or 650---which is between the two others and supposedly offers the best of both.

I see, thanks for the info bandit :) I may look into a 29er. I don't care so much for speed, I just want something durable. All my non-cycling friends are like "Just go buy a bike at Walmart" which makes me just shake my head at them, haha. I have heard good things about Cannondale though so maybe I might go with them. Good to mix up brands anyways right?!
