The 2013 Sibiu Tour
« on: April 24, 2013, 15:40 »
Sibiu Tour - 11th to 14th July
It is two months away, but already the buildup has begun to what was one of the best races of the 2012, the awesome Sibiu Tour. Only in its third year, its reputation is rapidly growing and this year the UCI have seen fit to upgrade it to 2.1 status meaning three pro continental teams will take part, CCC Polsat, Androni and Vini Fantini, (WT teams also could take part - its the same level as Tour of Britain) but do they know what they have let themselves in for.

The entire race is based around the Transilvanian city of Sibiu meaning you can see all stages easily (and accomodation is as cheap as 20e a night) and witness some of the most breathtaking scenery that Europe has to offer..

Once again the race is backed up by one of the best race websites out there, active facebook page, and there will be live coverage and extended highlights of every single stage..

Its almost impossible to describe, so lets just have some photos...

The prologue will once more take place on the cobbled streets of Sibiu..
But there is a way to avoid them..

Throw in the 20+km climb up the Transfagarasan road

The odd glacial lake

Conifer strewn mountains

Windmills.... and you have quite a race on your hands..

And just in case that wasnt enough...

Podium people in traditional dress.. Hands off Peter..

    PROLOGUE - 11th of July 2013
Central area of Sibiu 2.5 km
    Individual Time Trial
And so it begins, what on the surface looks like a pretty short prologue around the streets of Sibiu. What they forget to tell you is the streets are cobbled, so yes, lets have 2.5km flat out over cobbles.. Thats how to start a race..

    Spoiler (hover to show)

    STAGE 1 - 12 July 2013
SIBIU - AGNITA - BÂLEA LAC
    142.8 km
Well theres no messing around, last year stage one was a fairly easily rolling stage that ended up decimating the field, in fact, it destroyed it to a point where several teams went into the team time trial on day three missing half their team. This year, they go full bore, and head up to the Balea Lake, a glacier lake situated in the Fagaras Mountains which can mean only one thing.. Yup, they are headed up what is considered one of the greatest roads in the world, the Transfagarasan road. Expect amazing views, and great coverage of this stage as from the top you can see all the way down the mountain. Last year we saw riders collapsing as they reached the finish line such was the desctructive force of the "toughest road in the world". This is a rerun of last years 3rd stage, but with an extra 50km thrown on the start for good measure.

    STAGE 2 - 13th July 2013
    SIBIU - VOILA - PĂLTINIŞ
    184.5 km
Day three, and what the hell, lets throw in some more climbing, this time to the resort of Paltinis in the middle of conifer strewn  Cindrel Mountains, finishing at 1400m, the highest resort in Romania. This stage in 2012 decimated the field and led to mass retirements.

    STAGE 3a - 14th July 2013
ASTRA MUSEUM - RĂŞINARI - ASTRA MUSEUM
    Individual Time Trial
    11.4 km
After last years chaotic stage 2 Team Time Trial where half the teams only had 4 or 5 riders, this year we see a straight out and bike time trial over 11km. A chance for some of the riders who lost time in the mountains to gain back a few seconds.

    STAGE 3b - 14th July 2013
SIBIU - JINA - SUGAG - SIBIU (Piaţa Mare),
    138.8 km
After this mornings time trial, theres just time for a few more hills before a spectacular finish back in the centre of Sibiu. Likely to come down to a sprint between a small group that can get away early in the day, the GC should be all but decided by now.

The route seems to be quite similar to last years, at least in the way it is set out. But the Bâlea Lac stage being a normal stage could result in a very strange stage that could proof to be either very eventful or very uneventful

The Balea Lake stage is going to be a cracker, and I think moving the big climb to stage 1 could prove to work really well. Last year the queen stage came later and De La Parte was fairly untroubled the next day, this year, whoever wins stage 1 has to defend it through two pretty touch stages and a time trial.

The stage 2 finish could turn into a cracker, riders having to hold climbing form over two days and battle over seconds prior to the TT. We could well lose 1/3 of the field by the TT :D

Last year was odd, the first stage proved deceptively difficult and smashed things apart prior to the TTT. I think its better this way around.. But jeez, straight from a cobbled prologue to a mountain stage.. :fp

It was quite similar last year when the TT was ridden with very small teams.

Considering the last thing you said, I think this is a race which would be better suited in a week long format which would perhaps make it a bit more balansed, since the way it currently is they try to cram far too much difficult stages intoo short a time. However knowing the organisers, it would consist of a prologue, 5 mountain stages and a 100km MTT

I certainly think an extra day with a flattish stage thrown in after the prologue and before the silliness would be a good idea..

Ah, just looking, it was Paltinis first stage last year, stage 2 this year.. my memory is failing me..

    2012
    Prologue

    Stage 1
    (Stage 2 this year)
    Stage 2 - TTT
(replaced with TT on the final day)
    Stage 3
(Stage 1 this year and with 50km added)
    Stage 4
    (Very similar)

So theyve moved the crazy stage forward to day two, and added 50km onto it, and moved last years first stage to stage 2.

Am I mistaken or were there no Pro Conti teams at the race last year?
I'm really interested in what kind of team they will send and who will be their leaders, since it really need to be great climbers to have a change

Not sure to be honest.. Would have liked to see Endura and maybe Colombia there, but the balance looks fairly good. Androni and Vini Fantini will have there work pretty cut out for them, certainly Christina Watches, Utensilnord and SP Tableware could liven it up for them.

Guess the race is only in its third year and not very well known amongst the teams, and it comes in that late june/early july spell when teams are hoping for Dauphine, Switzerland and Tour wildcards. The race seemed to decide on their teams very early, most were known by February, and its possible they could have held off a little longer to get some better ranked teams. Then again, too many strong pro conti teams and the continental teams really would have struggled. As far as World Tour teams go, the same problem applies, Dauphine, Switzerland, Poland, Eneco, Tour de France all go on over the June/July period so attracing WT teams will always be an issue.

Three well known continental teams should be enough to liven it up, but without dominating the race and making it purely a fight between the three top level teams.

Long term, im not sure what the year long weather is like in Romania, but there could be an argument for making the race either a little earlier, a little later to try and find a gap in the race schedule to attract the top teams.

Looks like this has potential to be a very good race. I like that prologue, looks very technical and cobbles will make it even more fun. :D Climbs look brutal as well.

I notice this race takes place at a time when we will have flat stages and likely bunch sprints in the Tour (aside from the 14th), that will be good. Give us some excitement on a few of the Tours boring days.

Any idea on Vini Fantini's team Dim?

Any idea on Vini Fantini's team Dim?

According the organisers (June 6th) Vini Fantini have temporarily suspended all activity. The organisers are keeping a place open for them. So at the moment its still 19 teams (the 18 listed plus Vini Fantini)

    Quote

Synergy Baku, Ace.. :D Theyve had a fairly noticable spring, couple of good stages in the RAS, and a couple of decent stage wins. Very small squad so been doing relatively well.

Hopefully Dan Craven :woohoo get a run out. Certainly got guys that will liven things up.
