What ya growin'
« on: February 13, 2012, 00:24 »
Well spring is around the corner.

Gutted that when we left our old house we left all our fruit bushes behind :(
Apple tree, 2 raspberry bushes (that produced 36 jars of jam in the last year which we sold at the pub), around 60 strawberry plants, and countless other bushes. Went back a few months ago and the owner has dug them all up and put patio down. idiot.

So this year..

Already planted out in the garden (tend to find with fruit bushes if you plant them pre frost, then they get frosted, and as soon as it warms up their growth seems to accelerate)
3 Raspberrys
1 Blackberry (established)
1 Blueberry
1 Cranberry
1 Red Gooseberry
1 Red currant
2 Blackcurrant

In the house in propogators
Tomatoes
Sweetcorn
Carrots

In the plastic greenhouse
Sunflowers
Chilli Peppers

Potatoes in the dining room in trays sprouting, and onions ready to be planted.

Now just need some sun. :D

Got the garden bed dug over and fertilised, got seeds ready to go (peas, beans, carrots, bok choi and some other unpronounceable Chinese vege's).
Just pruned the fruit trees (apple, pear, cherry & lemon, plus a few unknowns...)

Got plenty of sun, but all that does is melt the ice for a few hours, then re-freezes. Ground is still too cold to stick anything in.

Another 2-3 weeks and should be good to go!

yeh, no danger of digging the ground here, the icy stuff from ten days ago is still on the ground. Its only today our front drive was free of ice.

All the fruit bushes are out. They seem to like the cold, at least, if you put them out cold, when the slightest patch of sun appears they all think whey-hey and start sprouting like crazy. Just gutted we left five year old established bushes behind. And the strawberries, started off with 8 plants, ended up with more than you could count. Cant beleive the idiot owner dug them up.

Potatoes have only started sprouting, going to be a good few weeks before they can go out anyway.

Might give broad beans a go, but we had problems in the south with the warm damp weather, got attacked every year by aphids and nothing would stop them (tried every trick in the book). Had tomato blight four years in a row down there as well.

oh, got lots of avacodo stones in the process of doing absolutely sweet fa. some in compost, buried to different levels, some supported by pins over water, you name it, theres an avacado stone doing it. Nothing.

Right now I'm growing snow. And it's coming up fast. My garden is pretty small, due partly to my lack of skill but mostly to the cheap fruit n' veg they sell in our Saturday market. I transplanted some raspberries from the Yukon that are trying to take over the neighbourhood down here. We're a bit too hot and dry for blackberries, not quite dry enough for peaches, but I'm going to try them both this year. I might plant some apple and pear trees this year. Tomatoes and herbs of course, I like the 'plant and ignore' products.
