Challenging Time Trial Tomorrow...
« on: May 17, 2013, 15:16 »
I enter the odd open 10 to get a bit of a blast out and the one on the old A1 near Peterborough tomorrow is a regular.

What isn't regular is that Michael Hutchinson of INGearRT is starting two mins behind me.

I am fairly average and will be looking to post a time starting with 25mins, he is looking to do a mid 19mins....

My club mates are taking bets on how many miles it takes him to bridge the 2 mins... feel free to batter my confidence by offering suggestions of your own :)

    Good man, Jimmy!

Michael Hutchinson? Isn't he the Ozzer that hanged himself in some bizarre autoerotic sex act?

Shouldn't worry about being passed by a semi-famous rider though. If it's an RTCC thing (does the RTCC still exist in the UK?), you can be pretty sure nobody will be around to see you draft him right up to the last 500 metres or so. Fair's fair, I reckon, if they've passed you. You could end up setting a new personal best time. :D

I was a moderately decent tester as a yoot. Came 6th or 9th in Stage 1 of the ESCA International I did, against a pretty impressive Euro field on a stinker of a course with a big climb near the end.

Last "standard distance" TT I ever did was a Wednesday night 10 miler on our local hellhole of a parcours on a standard road bike when I was 15 years old. I pulled off a 25' 39" on a mere 42x12 ("juvenile rules" gearing), which was pretty good, because nobody had ever done a sub 21-minute ride there to my knowledge.

Ok, no further opinion is sought from this rider.

I will be wearing my new Giro Air Attack helmet which should polarise opinion... they are marmite aren't they ! ? :)

God, Jimmy, you bought one of those? I don't even know if I can ever post in a thread alongside you again.  :D

Seriously though, good luck against that guy. I take back the "semi-famous" thing: I've actually never heard of him. Remember though, a TT is against yourself, really, isn't it? So it doesn't matter. A course record of 19'48" means it must be a pretty fast one. Be sure to report back!

Er, probably not what you want to hear... but... when he does catch you, do all you can to stay with him for as long as you can! Failing that, turn sharp right when he's just about to overtake you... old Stephen Pate trick!  ;)

If you are talking about Doctor Hutch, he's a semi famous twitter celebrity :D Half decent TT'er though.

Hang on, if I recall didnt Alex start after Michael last year and caught and passed him? No way in hell will he take Dowsetts course record.. might come in in the low 20m range.. in which case, youre best off just softpedalling for the first five minutes, save your energy, let him catch you and then follow him for a fairly respectable 22m or so.. ;)

    What people said before me...
Soft pedal until he's there (shouldn't take long), then do your best Stybar impression trying to hang on to that guy who can't decide if he wants to be British or Irish as if the Roubaix velodrome and eternal glory was waiting at the finish.

    Best of luck!

    he did a mid 19 and I did a mid 25.

It was a cross wind both ways so a little bit tougher than I was hoping !

Really nice bloke, we had a brief chat at the start.

He took just under 3.3miles to catch me but when he did it was amazing to see him whizz by. My Garmin said 26.8mph for me but he left me for dead.

    Really enjoyed it.

Yeah, the discs are very intimidating because you don't always hear them coming but they really blast when they come by.

Get doing them regularly, Jimmy, if you don't already. Course knowledge will improve your times a lot even if your fitness is already pretty high.
