Best/favorite tv series ever
« on: February 20, 2012, 00:00 »
'Best' and 'favorite' are subjective concepts. You can really have liked a series, while realizing that it's not among the best things ever, but you still liked it. For me, that would be Lost. No problem. I'm going to start with two categories, Drama and Comedy and list what were, in my opinion, the best, most impressive, series I've ever watched.

Drama

The Sopranos
The Wire
Hill St. Blues
I, Claudius

Comedy

Monty Python
MASH
Fawlty Towers
Soap

Others that I have enjoyed tremendously but wouldn't rank with 'greatest ever' are -

All Star Trek (especially TNG) with the exception of Enterprise, which was sh!te.
Northern Exposure
Twin Peaks
Law and Order
ER (early seasons)
Dexter
Due South
Lost
Blackadder
Porridge

Overall nothing will ever beat the wire. 20 years of research, 40 years of personal experience. 100% real.  Less happens in 1 season of  the Wire than in 1 episode on any other series. No camera effects no background music. Most importantly no make believe, no exaggerations. Every other show has story lines, and extraordinary characters. It wouldnt be worth filming if there wasnt something special about them.

Wire has no story lines. The characters are normal and based entirely on real experiences (except from the Omar character).

Just fly on the wall stuff.

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

enjoyed the episodes i have seen but failed through failed time management ot consistently watch

in fact that is my issue in general. TV is what i do when i have nothing else to do. I watch a lot but I just watch what is on by default. There is no show where i think, so and so is no today  have to watch it.

for some reason i have started watching King. have no idea why i like it

    Sherlock
Top series this. Modern rendition of Sherlock Holmes. Best whodunnit crime series for a long time and it's one episode for a couple of months.

    Mock the Week
Brilliant in the Frankie Boyle era.

    In the late '90s

....and yes agree whole-heartedly that the Sherlock series was absolutely great....too bad production was halted when the principals had to run off and do The Hobbit ( our loss and good on them )...can't wait for new episodes to appear...

...and btw there were episodes of Dr Who done by the same team that does Sherlock that were quite fun....

    Band of Brothers
Sherlock (why is it only 3 episodes a series?!  >:( )
Never Mind the Buzzcocks - fantastic with Simon Amstell, still very funny
    Scrubs
New Girl (this might  be because I am slightly in love with Zooey Deschenel)

...I think that the Sherlock series was unusually short because the two principal actors were otherwised engaged ( they both have major roles in the upcoming Hobbit films )...wish I knew if and/or when they will return because I really enjoyed that production....

...not sure about the Luther but we also got stuck on  Dr Who, especially the newest one, which incidently, is done by the same team that did the new awesome Sherlock... the new Dr. guy is brilliant...

...its great to be a kid again ( which is the response that watching the Dr brings out in me....weird but true )

Aye, I really liked the past two Dr Who's, David Tennant and Matt Smith (the new one). The story, and not graphics, still speaks for itself. Haven't seen much of the old Dr. Whos though, from the 70s and 80s.

Best TV series is probably The Wire, as mentioned a few times in this thread. I love the Soprano's as well, like quite a few HBO series (Six Feat Under is another particularly great one). Boardwalk Empire is noteworthy too, though I haven't seen a lot of episodes yet.

Besides HBO I'm really enjoying Mad Men, another series that has both style and story. Dexter had a brilliant first and second season, but the latter seasons are not as good. Same with Lost, which started brilliantly but ended terribly.
Sherlock is indeed brilliant. And it might just be 3 episodes a season, but those all last for one and a half hour. I can imagine that does take a bit of work. But I generally enjoy British detective series: Midsomer Murders is great, Frost, Dalziel & Pascoe, Morse, Silent Witness, etc.. They're just great entertainment.

In comedy, Monty Python is unbeatable, without any doubt the single best comedy series ever. Currently I'm watching Community every week, which is a very clever series. But my favourite more recent comedy series is The Office (UK version, though US one isn't bad either).

    Northern Exposure was entertaining.
As for the vintage set (we know who we are) Twilight Zone and Outer Limits was cool.
Maybe I need to watch more TV.

Just finished Sherlock. Good work from the Beeb.

Also up to date on Game of Thrones. Apart from the usual HBO obsession for showing too much flesh, it's a pretty decent drama.

I also quietly enjoyed Weeds last year.

Among my favourites: Boys from the Black Stuff, Our Friends in the North, Hamish Macbeth (I hit puberty when this was running and I decided all I wanted was to crawl around after a wild, dark Scottish woman), The Day Today, Brasseye and everything Alan Partridge.
