Moderation Team/Board Staff
« on: January 23, 2012, 20:48 »
Over the coming weeks and months various moderators will be appointed.

Some of these moderators may be responsible for discipline etc, while others although having the same title may concern themselves more with housekeeping and just keeping threads and forums tidy. The moderation team themselves will decide how they see themselves and THEY will also the ones who decide how they want the board to run.

As admin my job is not to moderate. My role will be purely keeping the place functioning, adding new features, apart from anything else, it would be a conflict for the administrator and ownder of the forum to be involved in moderation.

There are several levels of Staff Member on the forum, so to clarify  peoples roles.

Admin - me

Supreme Being - They have full admin rights except the ability to change the database cos that can mess things up. They can add features to the board, perform backups and housekeeping as wel as everything a Moderator and Staff Member can do.

Moderator - Have rights to moderate, issue warnings and change users permissions, groups profiles and everything a Staff member can do.

Staff Member - can move threads, delete, edit and move posts, rename titles, edit calendar entries, add new sections and general housekeeping.

There will be quite a lot of Staff Members as it useful to have reliable people who can change crappy titles etc.

The number of mods will be fewer, assigned to those with experience of moderating

And the number of Supreme Beings will obviously be very few.

Just for clarity sake, I am currently a moderator for this forum. Many here will already be accustomed to my moderating style since they have known me as a moderator on the CN forums

A very smart (and noble) way to set this up, dim. I am impressed with what I see thus far.

As most people will certainly be aware this forum has as of yet very few moderators and staff members and we will need quite a few more by the time we will officially launch. Because of that reason there is currently an open casting call for whomever wants to take on the responsibilities of becoming a staff member or a moderator. Please let me know by pm, or via twitter, if you want to become one and at least include your location and some information about you, so that we can make a blanced decision upon who will become [art of the staff.

OK then, I recommend you to help me with some product descriptions like this one http://www.dopeology.org/products/Clenbuterol/ on Dopeology. The fellow who wrote this and several others on there is well known to many of us. I've written a few but less successfully. I reckon you know plenty enough of dry sciencey stuff to do a few of them. :)

Just to note that you will see L'arriviste has a tech staff badge. Its primeraly to that he can access theme files and have a tinker, although he does have access to other things as well.

Zam has joined the team as a member of staff.

staff members can do general housekeeping, and will also see reported posts etc, so if you spot spam make sure you report it. They also play an invaluable part in discussing on the way the board is run and administered.

It is nice to read the occasional remark that suggests me as an addition to the mod team, especially by folk who have known me as one (and still haven't learned, it seems). I have never aspired to be a mod -never regretted being one either-, and to be frank, I quite enjoy my newly found status as a couch potato, and "just post".

I also think it is important that the Veloroom mods, and all of us, the forum itself, find the voice appropriate for this place. Having less baggage on board might help.

Still, I also want this place to succeed, and will certainly give the mods my pov on modding issues, if asked, to help them settle into their new roles.

In general, I hope we all give them the room to find their feet, let them learn by trial and error, and don't treat an occasional misstep or awkwardly handled situation as the end of the world. Talk like adults, give your pov calmly, and most things will be settled well, even if that might take a bit longer. Takes some stuff on the chin, for the team, even if you disagree. Mods tend to take a fair whack on their chins, over time, for the team too.

Actually, if you want to get your way, here's the tip: constructive dialogue (by users AND mods) massively increases the chances of getting to a solution that you were all after, and will be a better thing forum to boot (atmosphere-wise and actual attitude). It will also help the mods in finding the style (and rules) that works best here, something that we'll all still have to discover together.

So, for the time being, if ever, I won't be joining the mod team as a mod, but I most certainly will try to help them settle in, as best as I can, if I can. Just so you all know.

Personally i am enjoying FTP's current role on the forum as a calming and well thought out voice. Does sometimes leave me feeling embarrassed at the brevity and simplicity of my contributions.  :P
