so will he take the liquigas-cannondale WT license after the team closes this year?

That I could not say, Pastro. Perhaps we will know tomorrow: this press release comes a little ahead of the international dateline, so an announcement is no doubt due from the putative team itself.

Perhaps Cannondale knew of the merge with Garmin some time ago and that's why Alonso tried to honey Sagan to stay. It would also mean that he could have made a deal with licence holder Brixia Sport which frees him to remain a figurehead doing R&D and photo opps without needing day-to-day team involvement, much like Tinkov does now.

So no WT application, but PCT still could happen (I'm not holding my breath).

Even by pro cycling standards this is odd.

I wonder if it was just bluster to try and save Euskatel, an attempt to flush some other sponsors out with Alonso as mouthpiece.

Not much seems to have happened.

    Agreed.

But in terms of Alonso and his team being long-term members of the peloton, I would much rather it happened in the background than a Tinkoff-style full-on public-eye Twitter-based negotiation with riders and/or sponsors.

There isn't much noise, but the noises seem to be quietly positive. And if there is a long-term plan in place to be part of cycling's elite, then let's wait for it to be revealed slowly  ;)

Until this time next year, when we - another year older and hopefully wiser - can unearth the rusting capsule once again and chuckle at the dog-eared, moth-eaten contents consisting of timely tax advice and a couple of gently broken promises.

So now it is unlikely that it will happen in 2016, last year it was certain to happen in 2015, I don't understand why Alonso keeps on trolling, the team is not going to happen, just go out and say it.

    Yeah, /Alonso, I think.

Complete waste of media attention, stringing the sport along like that. He probably has a much credibility as people on the Dark Side now.

This has been the most pointless saga.

Before I just thought he had been unlucky in trying to get sponsors and teams off the ground, now I am wondering if he was just self publicising.

I reckon he probably wanted the team but his lawyers and business reps and financial people said no. In which case it would be the chasm between what is aspirational and what is realistically possible. Folks in Alonso's position are all about the idea and the deal but it's their money movers that really decide.

I think they all worked on this for some time but ultimately decided not to pursue it.

I think you're right. Alonso is a wealthy man, but he doesn't have the depth of pocket to match Tinkov for what is, in all reality, burning money. Alonso has no commercial benefit of throwing his own right money into the team. He needs a sugar daddy.

Maybe that is Oleg's big news...  :lol
